West Ham enquire about “special” star who could make Fullkrug unplayable

West Ham has already been hard at work this summer, with new manager Julen Lopetegui overseeing a huge squad revamp, as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign playing a new brand of football.

Exciting forward line acquisitions have already been made, with former Leeds United winger and Championship POTY Crysencio Summerville joining, alongside the young talented Brazilian, Luis Guilherme, and veteran forward, Niclas Füllkrug.

But the Hammers don't look set to stop there in their attempts to bolster the squad and improve on their 60 goals scored last season, looking to ease the goal-scoring and chance-creation burden of Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports via TheWestHamWay, West Ham have enquired about the highly-rated Juventus winger, Federico Chiesa. Another club showing interest is London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, who are also looking to sign the Italian.

An intermediary, David Lavelle, recently stated: "I think he could find a chance at a couple of Premier League clubs and I can say that we have some requests for a left winger from Fulham, who would be willing to pay, and from West Ham."

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

The 26-year-old is reportedly "out of Juventus' project" under new manager Thiago Motta, according to Fabrizio Romano, alongside a host of other players, as Juventus look to revamp their squad for the new manager.

Chiesa made 37 appearances in all competitions for Juventus last season, providing three assists, and scoring ten goals across 2,512 minutes played.

Chiesa and Fullkrug as a partnership

The Hammers have added a veteran goalscorer to the squad this summer in the shape of Fullkrug from Dortmund, who made 46 appearances last season, scoring 16 goals and providing ten assists.

Adding a "special" player and creator, as dubbed by Max Statman – an expert in Italian football – would give Fullkrug even more chance of succeeding at West Ham, providing him with more chances to score, and players around him to link up with.

Chiesa is a top-level creator, who has a variety of tools to use off of both flanks. Being right-footed, he can cut inside from the left wing, using that high shot volume, averaging 3.03 shots per 90, 1.02 of which are on target, and scoring 0.33 goals per 90.

He can then mix things up, go on the outside, and produce chances for others, averaging 4.55 progressive carries, 1.43 successful take-ons, 2.21 key passes and 0.74 crosses into the penalty area per 90. That final metric, Chiesa ranks in the top 1% among wingers in the top five European leagues.

This would go hand in hand with a player like Fullkrug, who stands at 6 foot 2, and is a target man type striker. Fullkrug wins 3.49 aerials per 90, and Chiesa's ability to put crosses into the box, and find him with creative passes, would allow the big German to maximize his qualities.

Fullkrug is also good at holding the ball up, to link play and bring his other forwards into play, as seen by his 0.26 assists per 90, and 2.28 progressive passes per 90, which would allow Chiesa, as well as West Ham's other talented forwards to bounce play off him, and find themselves in dangerous areas around the box.

Federico Chiesa for Juventus

Chiesa could prove to be the correct amount of creation and variation, in order to get the most of their new veteran talisman and improve their overall goal tally this upcoming season.

Leeds may now sell £11m ace in permanent transfer despite agreed loan deal

Leeds United could be set to sell one of their senior squad members despite having already agreed a loan move this summer, according to a fresh report.

More departures incoming at Elland Road

It has already been a busy summer for Daniel Farke and Leeds United ahead of the new Championship season, but it is showing no signs of slowing down.

Archie Gray and Glen Kamara have both left the club in deals worth almost a combined £50m, with the sale of teenage Gray key to keeping Leeds compliant with financial fair play rules after missing out on promotion back to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Charlie Cresswell has joined Ligue 1 side Toulouse and loan duo Marc Roca and Diego Llorente have both completed permanent moves away to Real Betis. Robin Koch, Luke Ayling and Jamie Shackleton have all also left on free transfers, while incomings have been slow at Elland Road with only Joe Rodon arriving on a permanent basis so far.

Now, they are set to see another man exit in the form of Rasmus Kristensen, who is on the verge of joining 2022 Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt for the upcoming campaign.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Danish defender is making the switch on a season long loan, with Frankfurt having an option to buy the defender for £15m at the end of the campaign should the German outfit opt to make the move permanent, a move which would make him second among their record signings. Now, there could be yet more funds coming into Elland Road in a bizarre twist.

Loanees move could be made permanent already

That comes courtesy of Jack Harrison, who is currently on loan with Everton in the Premier League. The Englishman spent last season with the Toffees and a clause in his contract has allowed him to go on loan once more for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign, which the Toffees duly took up.

But now, it could be made permanent before the season even begins. That is according to a shock report from Give Me Sport, who claim that the Merseyside outfit could look to "renegotiate the terms" of the deal by "upgrading" the move to a permanent one.

Leeds consider move for exciting ace who could be Archie Gray 2.0

Leeds United could sign this versatile gem very soon.

By

Jul 18, 2024

That is a result of their transfer plans elsewhere, where they are exploring moves to sign both Chelsea's Armando Broja and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan this summer. However, Premier League rules state that only two loans can be made by any Premier League club in a season, which is causing friction at Goodison Park.

And Harrison, who cost Leeds United £11m back in 2021, could be the cheapest deal to make permanent, with the forward valued at £15m by transfer site Transfermarkt.

Leeds, of course, would be under no obligation to accept a permanent deal, with the attacker still having four years left to run on his £90,000 a week deal at Elland Road.

Strong interest: Spurs move for £40m "monster" Gallagher alternative

With four wins out of four and two exciting youngsters already signed, it would be fair to say that as things stand, this summer has been a success for Tottenham Hotspur.

However, there are just two weeks until the Premier League returns, and while Archie Gray and Yang Min-Hyeok look like great pickups for the future, they won't move the needle much in the coming campaign.

So it's good news for Ange Postecoglou and Co that, in recent days, the club has been linked to a plethora of talented players, including the surprising rumour that they might rekindle their pursuit of Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

However, since that news broke earlier this week, another story has come out linking the North Londoners to the perfect alternative and someone who might be able to add more goals to the Lilywhites' midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles via the Football Transfers Podcast, Tottenham are interested in signing Manchester United's Scott McTominay this summer.

The Scottish midfielder was the subject of a £20m bid from Fulham, which was swiftly rejected by United, who currently value him at around £40m, per Castles.

It would certainly be surprising – and potentially unpopular – if Spurs do sign McTominay this summer, but if they can negotiate the fee down, he might be a good alternative to Gallagher.

How McTominay compares to Gallagher

Okay, so before we look at the pair's underlying numbers to better understand which would be the better signing for Spurs, let's examine their goalscoring record from last season, as while there are plenty of important metrics for measuring midfielders, goals ultimately win games.

The good news is that McTominay had a much better goalscoring campaign than Gallagher last season. He scored ten in 43 appearances, giving him an average of one every 4.3 games, whereas the Chelsea ace scored seven goals in 50 appearances, meaning he averaged one every 7.14 games.

Moreover, when you factor in the minutes they played last season, the United ace's average is significantly better, as he played 2775 minutes to the Englishman's 4036.

So, with it clear that the Lancaster-born "monster", as dubbed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær, is the more significant goal threat of the pair, which one of them comes out on top when we compare their underlying numbers from the league last season?

Well, interestingly, it's quite an even comparison. For example, the Blues ace comes out on top in specific metrics such as progressive passes and carries, passing accuracy, shot-creating actions, tackles won and ball recoveries, all per 90.

Whereas the 52-capped Scotsman does better in a swathe of other metrics, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, actual non-penalty goals plus assists, shots and shots on target, blocks, clearances and aerial duels won, also per 90.

Ultimately, while McTominay is the better goalscorer of the two midfielders, the comparison of the pair's underlying numbers makes it hard to pick who is the outright superior player. Therefore, if Levy and Co cannot get their hands on Gallagher this summer, then signing the United ace to provide more depth and attacking threat to the Lilywhites midfield wouldn't be a bad idea.

Talks held: Spurs move to sign £50k-p/w "monster" who's like Kulusevski

ByJack Salveson Holmes Aug 2, 2024

However, it seems very unlikely that anyone will stump up the £40m the Red Devils are after, so it might be better for the North Londoners to wait a little bit longer and see how much the asking price comes down before making an offer.

Shadab Khan rues Pakistan's poor powerplay batting, lauds 'very good' Jacob Duffy

Pakistan captain Shadab Khan bemoaned the loss of wickets in the powerplay, blaming the poor start for their defeat in the opening T20I of the three-match series. Pakistan suffered a horror start on what was considered such a good batting pitch that the visitors won the toss and opted to bat.”If we lose the first powerplay it’s difficult to come back,” Shadab said. “We went down to 20 for 4 and then we did exceptionally well to get to where we did. But if you get into that position it is difficult to come back. We were a bit rusty, and the conditions here are different to Pakistan. They are young players who will learn quick.”Related

Pakistan will need that to happen, after allowing New Zealand to get into an almost unassailable position inside the first five overs. New Zealand debutant Jacob Duffy was the man to inflict most of the damage, removing three of the top four before returning to get rid of Shadab, the top-scorer, and even with Pakistan’s recovery they only managed 153, a total that, surface considered, was well below par. Shadab had warm praise for the 26-year-old, who finished with figures of 4-0-33-4, as well as New Zealand’s bowling in general.

“Duffy is very good,” Shadab said. “That was an exceptional first spell. But it’s not easy for us. They are all good bowlers who play a lot of cricket in these conditions, and they have other bowlers coming back from the second game.”It’s tough for us because we haven’t played much in these conditions. They did well in the National T20 and played well in the series against Zimbabwe series too. But the conditions are different because we played against Zimbabwe at home, not New Zealand. But the more cricket they play here, the better they will do.”Shadab insisted perspective was necessary, believing the side had put in a good performance considering how they began, and the absence of the talismanic Babar Azam. “We could make changes for the next games but we’ve done well. We were rusty and we didn’t play any international cricket here, but we’ve done well.Jacob Duffy picked up three wickets inside the powerplay•Getty Images

“We missed Babar because he has the anchor role that he plays so well. Fakhar [Zaman] gives us an aggressive start in the powerplay and he’s not here either, but this is a good opportunity for youngsters to do well.”It was great to play in front of a crowd for the first time in a while. We were very happy and we will hope we make the crowd happy next time.”Meanwhile, Duffy, the Player of the Match, spoke of his delight at his dream debut, talking about how welcoming everyone in the New Zealand camp had been.”It’s amazing how many people reach out when you get a call-up, especially when you’re from a small community like Southland,” Duffy said. “It’s pretty exciting for a small community. I’ve really enjoyed growing up there and people were really happy for me.”You just have to play it like any other game. I’ve played with these boys in domestic cricket, and the good thing is you realise you’re not too far away from the international level.”Given Tim Southee Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson are set to return for the remainder of the series, Duffy will play no part in the remaining two games. That made impressing on his debut all the more important, but he insisted he didn’t heap any pressure onto himself, and credited the New Zealand squad for making him feel accepted.”I think you just have to keep doing what you’ve been doing to get here,” Duffy said. “I’ve got a particular brand of cricket I like to play, things that have worked for me. I wanted to stick to my guns, and hopefully my best is good enough to get the job done.”I’ve had a few ups and downs in my career. I went through an action remodel a few years ago. I used to just fall away and wasn’t swinging the ball anymore, and was a little bit inaccurate. I missed cricket one summer but that was a massive turning point in my career.”The bowling stocks in New Zealand cricket are probably the best they’ve ever been. I just get the chance to spend some time learning off them, and it’s been great for me. The lads have been awesome and made me feel comfortable above and beyond.”

Chelsea women's player ratings vs Tottenham: No Lauren James, no problem! Blues continue perfect WSL start despite Hannah Hampton's dismay at controversial Spurs equaliser

Maika Hamano, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sandy Baltimore were all on the scoresheet as the champions of England kept up their fine form

Chelsea continued their perfect start to the new Women's Super League season on Sunday with an eventful 5-2 win over London rivals Tottenham. It wasn't a game without obstacle for the Blues, who were without Lauren James due to injury and were also left dismayed by Spurs' first half equaliser, which Hannah Hampton was convinced she had kept out. But the champions of England persevered and emerged with all three points ahead of the international break.

The incident that will be talked about most from this game came midway through the first half, after Maika Hamano had already given Chelsea the lead. Spurs full-back Amanda Nilden spotted Hampton drifting to her left for the anticipated cross and went for goal, and the assistant flagged to signal that her effort had crossed the line despite the goalkeeper's best efforts. It was to the dismay of Hampton, who was booked for her protestations, and suddenly the visitors were back in the game.

Even when Nilden got on the scoresheet at the other end, inadvertently flicking Guro Reiten's corner into her own net, things were tight and competitive – until a late flurry from the champions. Rytting Kaneryd's volley in the 70th minute will be a goal of the season contender, summer signing Sandy Baltimore was there to convert when Reiten's penalty hit the post a few minutes later and then – after Eveliina Summanen pulled another back for Spurs with a great free-kick – Rytting Kaneryd put the gloss on it all, adding a late fifth with an emphatic finish.

It's a result that sends the Blues into the break on a high, with four wins from their first four WSL games as they pursue a sixth successive league title and a first under new head coach Sonia Bompastor.

£100,000-per-week Man United target has now agreed to join Chelsea

A £100,000-per-week Manchester United target has now agreed to join Chelsea, and talks are ongoing with his club over agreeing a formal deal.

Maresca and Chelsea sets sights on new attackers

Boosted by the arrival of new head coach Enzo Maresca, the west Londoners are getting to work on bringing in fresh senior faces for next season, in a bid to upgrade the squad and improve on Mauricio Pochettino's sole campaign in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

They've already sealed a deal for Tosin Adarabioyo, who joins Chelsea on a free transfer from Fulham, but it is believed that Maresca and co wish to add more firepower to the squad for next term.

A new striker signing is on the agenda at Chelsea over the next few weeks, but it won't be RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko, as Fabrizio Romano first broke news that the Slovenia international is set to remain in the Bundesliga and sign a new long-term deal.

Chelsea are thought to be targeting Artem Doybyk of Girona as an alternative to Sesko, among others, so it will be interesting to see who Maresca and co decide to bring in as the Blues' new out-and-out frontman.

The likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson impressed with their goal contributions last season, scoring 42 between them, but it is believed that Chelsea could also look to seal the signing of a new attacking midfielder/winger.

A firm transfer target in that regard, according to widespread reports in the last 10 days, is Crystal Palace star Michael Olise. The 22-year-old, who could leave Selhurst Park for the value of his £60 million release clause, starred under both Roy Hodgson and Oliver Glasner last term.

Olise agrees terms with Chelsea as Palace talks continue

Now, as per GiveMeSport, a significant update has come to light on his potential move to west London. It is believed that Olise has just agreed personal terms with Chelsea, and while Man United are still in the race for him, it is the Blues who have seized more control in the race for his signing.

Talks are now ongoing with Palace over scheduled payments for the £100,000-per-week star's release clause, so if the Red Devils want to hijack a move, they need to get moving.

"What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent," said Hodgson on Olise last year.

"He has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”
