  • Portuguese superstar remains a legend in Spain
  • Still going strong in Saudi at 39 years of age
  • Frenchman wants to enjoy similar longevity
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 21-year-old France international is more at home in the middle of the park, or at left-back, so is not looking to follow in famous Portuguese footsteps when it comes to the art of goalscoring. Ronaldo is, however, about much more than end product – as he continues to prove at the age of 39 with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr.

    WHAT CAMAVINGA SAID ABOUT RONALDO

Ronaldo is the poster boy for longevity, with Camavinga telling when asked about those that he looks up to: “I have a lot of references, like Cristiano Ronaldo. The most important thing is to have longevity in football, and that means working in the gym and taking care of your body.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Camavinga has become a key cog in Real Madrid’s trophy-winning machine, as Ronaldo once was, and added on putting his versatility to good use: “Even if they put me in goal, I’m going to do goalkeeper stuff! And in goal, I’m great! You just have to shoot hard & from a distance…not too close.”

Real will not need Camavinga to step in between the sticks any time soon, but they will be hoping that he can continue to emulate the club’s legendary all-time leading goalscorer by collecting more La Liga and Champions League titles.

Aditya Thakare called up to India's U-19 World Cup squad

The Vidarbha fast bowler is cover for the injured Ishan Porel and is set to fly to New Zealand on Wednesday

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jan-2018Aditya Thakare has been called up to India’s Under-19 World Cup squad as cover for the injured Ishan Porel. The Vidarbha fast bowler, one of five stand-bys for the squad, is set to fly to New Zealand on Wednesday.Porel injured his left ankle in India’s tournament opener against Australia, in which he could bowl just 4.1 overs. He spent the rest of the innings off the field and did not train ahead of India’s second game, against Papua New Guinea, either.”It’s hard to predict how long he’ll take to recover, but we’re looking at giving him every opportunity to be a part of the campaign again, because this is what he’s worked for,” a member of India’s support staff told ESPNcricinfo. “We’re looking to possibly having him fit in time for the quarter-finals. It could take five days, sometimes seven days. At the moment, he won’t play the game against Zimbabwe either.”Thakare made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy final in December 2017, when Vidarbha beat Delhi. While he managed to pick up just two wickets, he impressed with his late swing and accuracy with both the new and old ball. After the game, Vidarbha coach Chandrakant Pandit admitted to having been apprehensive of exposing Thakare in a pressure game, but expressed surprise at his ability after Vidarbha’s maiden title triumph. On Monday, the Vidarbha Cricket Association was asked to provide a report on Thakare’s fitness by the BCCI, following which he was asked not to be considered for any ongoing matches. The call-up means he will miss the Cooch Behar Trophy semi-finals against Karnataka in Nagpur starting Friday. With an Under-19 Trophy in sight, the Vidarbha Cricket Association chose to field him in the junior tournament instead of playing him in the zonal leg of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic T20 competition. He was part of India’s Under-19 squad for the Asia Cup in Malaysia last year, but didn’t feature in the playing XI.Thakare is only the second player from Vidarbha to be picked in India’s Under-19 World Cup squad. Faiz Fazal, the Vidarbha captain, was part of the 2004 edition, but had to return after fracturing his thumb in a warm-up game. Fazal was replaced by Shikhar Dhawan, who went on to become the tournament’s leading run-scorer.

West Ham Eye Swoop For £35m "Real Beast"

West Ham United have yet to make a summer signing and with the 2023/24 Premier League campaign kicking off next week, David Moyes will need to act swiftly if he aims to bolster his squad.

He has seen a move for Carlos Borges fall through, with the youngster joining Ajax instead of West Ham and with £105m in the transfer kitty due to the sale of Declan Rice, Moyes certainly has the cash to spend.

French striker Elye Wahi has been eyed for a potential move and Moyes could make the youngster his first summer signing.

Could West Ham sign Elye Wahi?

The Montpellier hitman has been attracting interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea also keen on luring him to London. Journalist Fabrice Hawkins shared a recent update, tweeting: “Chelsea, West Ham, Fulham and Frankfurt are interested in Elye Wahi.

“In recent days the Germans insist on convincing the player. Chelsea made a first offer of 30 million euros including bonus. Montpellier wants about 40M €.”

Moyes certainly faces tough competition for his signature, yet for a fee of €40m (£35m), it could turn into a stunning bargain given his meteoric rise in Ligue 1.

How good is Elye Wahi?

West Ham scored just 42 league goals last term, a drop from the 60 they registered the season before, and it suggests some added firepower is required this summer.

The only centre forward to score more than ten goals was Michail Antonio, with 2022 summer arrival Gianluca Scamacca failing to impress, netting just eight goals in total across all competitions.

It looks as though the Italian is departing the London side, joining Atalanta in the coming days, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Wahi would certainly be a wonderful replacement for the striker and judging by his statistics over the previous 12 months, he could even be a major upgrade.

The 20-year-old ranked first across the Montpellier squad for goals and assists (24) and shots on target per game (1.2), while also ranking seventh for key passes (0.7) and sixth for successful dribbles (0.9) per game, showcasing his abilities across a range of attacking metrics.

In contrast, Scamacca failed to rank in the top five across the West Ham squad for goals and assists (three), while managing just 0.6 shots on target, 0.8 key passes and 0.4 successful dribbles per game, failing to impress following his big money move from Serie A last summer.

The French talent also ranked in the top 7% when compared to positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.64) over the previous 12 months, whereas Scamacca fails to even rank in the top 50%, averaging just 0.29 non-penalty goals per 90, and it’s evident that Wahi is much more effective in front of goal.

Lauded as a “real beast” by reporter Andres Onrubia Ramos in 2022, Wahi has scored 32 senior goals and he is yet to turn 21. The Italian, in comparison has netted 50 goals during his career, yet he is four years older, and it looks as though the youngster could break through that barrier in no time.

Judging by the evidence, the Montpellier hitman is a major upgrade on the 11-cap Italy international and Moyes should be doing everything he can to lure him to West Ham.

Chelsea Battling Man City For 21-Year-Old PL Ace

Chelsea are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise this summer, but face competition from Manchester City, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

How old is Michael Olise?

The 21-year-old has arguably become one of Palace's most important players, especially now that Wilfried Zaha has departed for Galatasaray. His technical quality and dribbling ability have caught the eye so often in recent years, with a stunning late free-kick at home to Manchester United last season arguably one of the standout goals of the campaign.

In 2022/23, Olise featured in 37 of the Eagles' 38 Premier League games, starting 31 of them, registering an impressive 11 assists and also scoring twice. That outlines what a key man he already is at such a tender age, and Palace fans no doubt see him as the future of the club, alongside Eberechi Eze.

That being said, the south Londoners might find it difficult to keep hold of the France youth international this summer, should a bid come in from one of the Premier League's biggest clubs. Chelsea have been linked with a move for him already, and it looks as though their interest is not going away.

Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise.

Could Chelsea sign Michael Olise?

Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that Chelsea and City are both eyeing a summer move for Olise, with a release clause of around £35m in his contract:

"Release clause confirmed. Man City and Chelsea interest confirmed. Olise, one to follow in the next days/weeks."

This is an exciting prospect for Chelsea supporters, considering Olise is arguably one of the most talented young players around currently, possessing such a silky style of play but also producing consistent end product.

To have already got 16 assists in the Premier League at the age of just 21 says so much about his quality in the final third, and that should only go up a gear as he ages, and if he surrounded by superior teammates than the ones at Palace.

One of Olise's current colleagues, Joel Ward, has also made it clear how highly he thinks of him as a player, recently saying:

“Michael’s a special talent. The world’s his oyster and he’s just getting better and better from game to game, so I think he’s going to go onto new heights and set the bar. If he continues that way, he’s going to go on to special things."

Olise really could be a gem of an addition at Chelsea, providing strong competition for the current wide and central attacking options, from Raheem Sterling to Nicolas Jackson, and his ability to cuts inside from the right onto his deadly left foot can be a real weapon for the Blues.

Mauricio Pochettino has always been a keen advocate of youth during his managerial career, if he feels he can get the very best out of the Palace star, it is a move that Chelsea must try and get over the line. The competition that City are providing is a potential stumbling block, but it would be harder for Olise to start more regularly at the Etihad, which could help the Blues.

India facing a 'changed Bangladesh'

It says much for the progress of Bangladesh in recent years that their senior players and coaches keep being asked a very similar question: is this the biggest moment in the history of the team? That a reasonable answer to that question – whether it was asked ahead of the World Cup quarter-final in 2015, when they defeated England in a Test in Dhaka or Sri Lanka in a Test in Colombo, when they won home ODI series against Pakistan, India and South Africa, or now, when they find themselves in the semi-final of a global tournament for the first time – is “yes” confirms the impression that, as their captain Mashrafe Mortaza put it, their “graph is pretty good. We’re coming up.”While most would accept that they have enjoyed a little fortune on the way to the semi-final – rain came to their rescue against Australia – the general impression remains: Bangladesh are a growing force in international cricket. Their future looks bright. There is no doubt that India are favourites in this semi-final, though. Strong favourites. It’s not just that they have a hugely experienced batting and bowling line-up, it’s that they have a huge amount of experience of playing in such high-profile games. But as if Pakistan’s victory over England had not already exposed the folly of presumption, Bangladesh have a record that demands respect. They have produced the two highest partnerships of the tournament to date (Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah added 224 for the fifth wicket against New Zealand, while Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim added 166 for the third wicket against England), they have recorded four of the nine highest individual scores (including three centuries) and they have won two of the last three ODIs between these sides. Most of all, they have a skillful, varied attack that, even on the fine batting surface anticipated at Edgbaston, provides Mashrafe with options. For all those reasons, Bangladesh should be a far more confident side than the one brushed aside by India in the World Cup quarter-final. Now they know they can win big games and fight back from tough positions. Now they know they belong at this level. India, Mashrafe said, are going to find a “changed” opponent.”Winning against England [in the 2015 World Cup] helped us a lot. We lost our next match, against New Zealand in New Zealand, but on a tough wicket we scored almost 300 and the team took a boost from that.”After that, we beat Pakistan, India and South Africa. Yes, it was at home, but we gained more self-respect by beating those sort of teams.”So this team has changed. Over the last two or three years, we’ve changed a lot, especially in the dressing rooms. Now we play with freedom. The coaches support the players and don’t drop them. These sort of things actually change teams.”Mashrafe took particular confidence from the victory over New Zealand. With 20 overs of the New Zealand innings remaining, they were 152 for 2 with Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson well set. A total well in excess of 300 looked likely.”That’s the thing,” he explained. “We never give up. They batted really well, but we came back strongly. And once you have played at your best, you know how well you can play and things can change. I know, on our day, we can do anything.”Might the pressure of the occasion prove a burden? Mashrafe accepted his side is in uncharted territory here, but, like his coach the previous day, attempted to alleviate the burden.”It is our first time in our life in a semi-final; that is a fact,” he said. “And if you look at it as a semi-final, the pressure will be very hard. But if you think of it as just another match, the pressure will come a lot easier. And India has more pressure than us as the population is huge there and people love cricket a lot. Both teams have a lot of expectations.”For a Bangladesh team of which very little was expected not so long ago, such hopes are another sign of progress. Few would bet against this being the first of many semi-final appearances over the coming years.
