The Gayle and Ganguly shows

Chris Gayle continues to enthrall, Sourav Ganguly continues to come back, and Shane Warne continues to court controversy. All this and more in a review of the action from the fifth week of the IPL

Abhishek Purohit13-May-2011The Gayle show continues
Runs, wickets, mile-wide smiles, ‘tuk-tuk train’ celebrations. Christopher Gayle’s party with the Royal Challengers Bangalore moves from one match-winning performance to another. Numbers don’t tell the story. They scream it out. In six matches, Gayle has muscled almost 400 runs, at an average of almost 100, and a strike-rate close to 200. Almost unreal, but there’s more. He’s also deadpanned his way to six wickets, firing it in off a two-step walk. It doesn’t stop there. He celebrates each dismissal, sometimes like a plane taking off, sometimes like a locomotive chugging away, and sometimes with a bit of sparring. The Bangalore crowd can’t have enough of him. Ross Taylor who?The Ganguly show reruns, again
“?” (My name is Sourav Ganguly. You haven’t forgotten, have you?) Remember that commercial from about five years ago? Ganguly was making a comeback then. He has made another comeback now.The crowd at Hyderabad, the venue of Ganguly’s latest return, was buzzing with anticipation as he walked out at No. 3 for Pune Warriors. A largely competitive – if somewhat streaky – unbeaten 32 later, the phoenix had risen, again.Towards the end of that commercial, Ganguly asks, “?” (You’ll listen to your dada, won’t you?) Listen? One fan at Hyderabad was moved so much that he charged on to the field to touch his hero’s feet. It was supposed to be an away game for Pune. Ganguly couldn’t have been made to feel more at home. Pune have a home tie coming up against Kolkata Knight Riders. Guess whom the crowd will be listening to.The Aravind show begins
Bangalore seamer S Aravind is used to playing second fiddle. Normally, he plays third fiddle behind Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun for Karnataka. This season, he has been opening the Bangalore bowling along with Zaheer Khan, and has nipped it around on his way to 13 wickets from seven games. Daniel Vettori has called him the find of the season for Bangalore. Aravind justified the faith with a Man-of-the-Match performance against Rajasthan Royals that included the wickets of Shane Watson and Rahul Dravid in three deliveries. The easy-going person he is, he will seamlessly slot in behind Vinay and Mithun when the domestic season arrives.Jaipur: The fortress that crumbled•AFPThe dashers’ revenge
Fast bowlers hunt in pairs. If the first one doesn’t get you, the other will. The dictum applies to the dashing batting duo of the IPL as well. Prasanth Parameswaran, the Kochi Tuskers Kerala seamer, found out the hard way. His first IPL wicket was that of the first dasher, Virender Sehwag, and instantly catapulted him to overnight fame. Parameswaran who? The man who got Sehwag. Gayle, Sehwag’s fellow destroyer of bowlers, didn’t like it one bit. And he decided to give it back for the sake of the dasher brotherhood. Parameswaran’s first over against Bangalore went for 6, 6 (no ball), 4, 4, 6, 6, 4. Parameswaran who? The man whom Gayle tonked for 36 in an over.Warne and the Rajasthan chronicles
During his international career, Shane Warne didn’t bother about the playing surface as he foxed batsmen by the strength of his mind and the guile of his wrists. But leading an average Rajasthan side for four seasons has led to him becoming increasingly reliant on the slow-and-low Sawai Mansingh Stadium pitch that suited his slow-and-medium attack.Against Chennai Super Kings, Warne complained that Rajasthan were forced to play on a side track with good bounce that reduced the ground to having “kiddies” boundaries. The BCCI issued a clarification saying that no team had the choice to choose the wicket and that it was the decision of the curator and its pitches committee. There was more controversy coming Warne’s way in his last IPL game in Jaipur. Rajasthan crashed to another defeat against Bangalore on the same side wicket, and this time the tremors were felt at home. The Rajasthan Cricket Association complained to the BCCI that Warne had abused its secretary Sanjay Dixit after the latter had allegedly ignored Warne’s demand that the surface for the Bangalore game be shifted to one that suited the home team.As a parting shot, Warne claimed in an interview that he had threatened to walk out of the Rajasthan side during the IPL’s inaugural season over “certain people” interfering in team selection. The IPL shows its depth
It was billed as a no-contest. Mumbai Indians against Kings XI Punjab, top against bottom. And a no-contest it turned out to be. Only, the sides decided to switch places. In the biggest upset of this IPL, Punjab thrashed high-flying Mumbai by 76 runs, the second-largest victory margin of the season. Only the first four Punjab batsmen managed to get into double figures as Munaf Patel became the third Mumbai bowler to take a five-wicket haul this year. Surprisingly, Mumbai’s much-vaunted batting line-up never turned up, folding for 87 inside 13 overs. No.1 lost to No. 10, showcasing the famous depth of the IPL.

Wicketkeepers who stepped up

Captains keeping and scoring hundreds; and most runs scored in the first and last 10 overs

Adam Gilchrist and Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Captains who also happen to keep wicket
© AFP

Both captains in the first two ODIs between India and Australia were wicketkeepers. How often has this happened in international cricket? asked Sriram from the United States, and many others
Last week’s games involving Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist were the 11th and 12th occasions in ODIs in which both captains were wicketkeepers. The first three were in 1995-96, when the rival captains in the New Zealand-Zimbabwe series were Lee Germon and Andy Flower, and Flower was half of the equation on the next four occasions too, all of them in 2000 – twice against Pakistan (captained by Moin Khan) and twice in England (captained by Alec Stewart). The last three instances came in the Bangladesh-West Indies series late in 2002, when Khaled Mashud faced Ridley Jacobs in three matches. There have been only five Test matches in which both sides were captained by their wicketkeeper: two involving Germon and Flower in New Zealand in 1995-96, and two involving Mashud and Jacobs in 2002-03. The other instance was also in 2002-03, when Mark Boucher stood in as South Africa’s captain against Bangladesh (led by Mashud) in East London. In a recent ODI between Zimbabwe and South Africa, both wicketkeepers scored centuries. Has this happened before? asked Hans Eric Paree from the Netherlands
That match in Harare was only the second time both wicketkeepers had scored centuries in the same ODI. The first one was the game between India and Sri Lanka in Jaipur in 2005-06, when Dhoni answered Kumar Sangakkara’s ton with an amazing 183 not out.I was stumped by a quiz question recently: which record was set in the very first Test of all, and still stands? asked Vijay Bhosle from Kolkata
The record set in the inaugural Test match, in Melbourne in 1876-77, that still stands concerns the highest percentage of runs scored by an individual player in a completed innings. Charles Bannerman, who scored the first run and went on to the first century in Test cricket, retired hurt with 165 towards the end of Australia’s innings of 245, which represents 67.35% of the total. More than 130 years later, that percentage has never been beaten: the closest was by another Australian opener, Michael Slater, with 123 out of 184 (66.85%) against England in Sydney in 1998-99. In all, 14 batsmen have made more than 60% of the runs in a completed innings of a Test.

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have a laugh as the records tumble

What’s the highest score in Tests by a right-hander? asked Tom Bowman from Canterbury
That record changed hands last year after belonging to England’s Len Hutton (364 against Australia at The Oval) since 1938. The man who broke it was Sri Lanka’s captain Mahela Jayawardene, who made 374 against South Africa in Colombo, in the match in which he and Sangakkara broke the world record for any partnership with a stand of 624 for the third wicket. Of the top seven individual scores in Tests, five have been by left-handers – Brian Lara’s 400 not out and 375, Matthew Hayden’s 380, Garry Sobers’ undefeated 365, and Sanath Jayasuriya’s 340.Which team holds the record for hitting the most runs in the first ten overs, and which team has made the most in the last ten? asked Sandeep from India
We can’t be definitive here, as we are missing a lot of the over-by-over scores – particularly from Sri Lanka’s record score of 443 for 7 against Holland in Amstelveen in 2006, which obviously must have seen some very quick scoring – but Cricinfo’s own Travis Basevi, the man who built Statsguru, has dug out two instances which it would be hard to better. When Sri Lanka beat England at Headingley in 2006, they had reached 133 for 0 after 10 overs. And when New Zealand slaughtered the United States at The Oval during the 2004 Champions Trophy, they scored 142 (for the loss of two wickets) in the last 10 overs, including an amazing 110 runs in the last five.Whose autobiography was called I’ll Spin You a Tale? asked Robin Ritchie from Cambridge
This was Eric Hollies, the Warwickshire and England legspinner, whose life story was published by the Museum Press in 1955. Hollies had an unusual career: he played his first three Tests on tour in the West Indies in 1934-35, then (not helped by the War) didn’t win another cap for more than 12 years, at the end of which he was recalled to play South Africa in 1947 and took 5 for 123 in his first innings back, at Trent Bridge. But Hollies made his indelible mark on Test history the following year, at The Oval in 1948, when he bowled Don Bradman for a duck in his final Test innings, when Bradman needed just four runs to finish with a Test average of 100. Hollies took 44 wickets in 13 Tests in all, at an average of 30.27. A famously inept batsman, he ended up with many more first-class wickets (2323) than runs (1673) in his long career, which stretched from 1932 to 1957. He died in 1981.

Gurbaz ton trumps Tector's as Afghanistan go 1-0 up

Farooqi took a three-wicket haul to damage Ireland’s chase

Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the way for Afghanistan•ACB

Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 121 off 117 balls beat Harry Tector’s 138 off 147 balls as Afghanistan sealed their fifth successive win against Ireland in ODI cricket, in Sharjah.Gurbaz scored his sixth ODI hundred – the joint most by an Afghanistan player – to set Afghanistan up for a tall total. He had added 150 for the opening stand with Ibrahim Zadran, who had contributed 60.Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (50*) also made a half-century to give his team some late impetus. Gurbaz hit eight fours and six sixes before he was bowled by Theo van Woerkom in the 39th over. Gurbaz had been particularly severe on both van Woerkom and George Dockrell, taking the left-arm spinners for 54 off 35 balls.Rahmat Shah then then fell soon after to Craig Young, but Afghanistan managed to breach 300, for just the ninth time in ODIs.Left-arm quick Fazalhaq Farooqi then produced a double-strike to get rid of Andy Balbirnie and Curtis Campher. Captain Paul Stirling had also departed early to leave Ireland three down in the powerplay.Tector and wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker then steadied the innings and lifted Ireland with a 173-run partnership for the fourth wicket. While Tector hit his fifth ODI hundred, Tucker was stopped on 85 by Farooqi in the 39th over of the chase. That dismissal sparked another collapse as Ireland lost 4 for 42.Tector then fell in the final over as Afghanistan wrapped up a 35-run victory to go 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series.

O Dia do Mercado!

Man Utd could sign "excellent" £34m ace as agent speaks out on summer move

Manchester United are beginning to motor in the summer transfer window and could now make progress in signing a defensive addition, according to reports.

Manchester United look for arrivals after Matheus Cunha

Ruben Amorim is aware there is alot of work to do this summer at Old Trafford and there is plenty of movement expected to occur in both directions, though he can smile at the thought of having Matheus Cunha to work with at the Red Devils.

Signing a five-year deal, the Brazil international will earn £200,000 per week after his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers and could rise to their second-highest earner if Bruno Fernandes leaves the club for Al Hilal alongside other permutations.

Financially, it may be difficult to secure everyone on Manchester United’s shopping list after missing out on around £100 million by virtue of losing out in the Europa League final.

Regardless, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s swinging cutbacks may have left some room for manouvre alongside the aforementioned news that Al Hilal have set a five-day deadline regarding Red Devils captain Fernandes. If the skipper does leave, his goal contributions could be replaced by Bryan Mbeumo, after David Ornstein revealed on Monday that the Cameroon star wants to join the Red Devils.

Defensively, Amorim wants to strengthen his side and could try to land a bargain £15 million deal for Brighton & Hove Albion star Pervis Estupinan.

Intriguingly, the Ecuador international has just two years left on his deal at the Amex Stadium, which may force the Seagulls to sell before his value begins to dwindle if he doesn’t sign an extension. Now, the Red Devils could be set to pounce for another defender after opening talks over a swoop for his services.

Manchester United could land Udinese star Oumar Solet

According to reports via TBR, Manchester United could land Udinese centre-back Oumar Solet this summer after agent Claudio Pasqualin noted that the 24-year-old may depart the Serie A outfit following talks between both clubs.

Making 92 recoveries and winning 20 duels on Serie A duty this term, reports claim that the 25-year-old could move for £34 million, fitting Manchester United’s philosphy of finding value for money on the market.

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter are considering a move for the Chelsea forward, who has struggled to find his feet with the London side since his arrival in 2023. Inter, under new coach Cristian Chivu, are planning to rebuild their attack after a disappointing end to last season and see the Frenchman as a reliable option.

However, it would not be easy for Inter to attract the 27-year-old to Serie A as reports Bayern Munich, having already held discussions with the player's agent, are also in the race. Nkunku was strongly linked with Bayern in January, and the Bundesliga champions have reportedly reignited their interest following Jamal Musiala's injury.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea signed Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig on a six-year contract in June 2023 for £53 million ($66 million). However, he made 27 Premier League appearances last season, with just nine starts, and managed only three goals. But Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been using the forward more frequently in recent weeks, explaining that he “deserves” to get minutes. Nkunku has appeared in five of Chelsea’s six games at the Club World Cup, starting three of them. However, he is still expected to leave this summer.

For now, though, Nkunku’s focus remains on the Club World Cup final, set to be played on July 13.

Tanzim Hasan apologises to BCB for offensive Facebook posts

BCB official says Tanzim “takes full responsibility” for the posts, and the board will monitor him going forward

Tanzim Hasan has played just one game for Bangladesh so far•Associated Press

Bangladesh quick Tanzim Hasan has had to apologise to the BCB for a number of offensive Facebook posts from the past, which resurfaced after his international debut at the Asia Cup last week. Some of the posts date back to 2014, and BCB cricket operations chair Jalal Yunus said Tanzim was repentant about his posts and took full responsibility for them.At least four posts, which are now deleted, became viral shortly after his ODI debut against India on September 15, when he picked up wickets in a Bangladesh win.In a Facebook post from September 2022, he wrote in Bangla: “A working woman will not allow her husband or children to have their way with her; she loses her charm, destroys her family, her purdah, and the society.”In April this year, Tanzim, now 20, shared a photo, purported to be from 1954, of a burqa-clad woman travelling in a rickshaw, possibly with her family, and called it the “golden past”.In another post (date unknown), Tanzim wrote: “If you marry a girl who mingles freely in the university, you can’t get your child a demure mother.”In 2014, when he was 11 or so, Tanzim had shared a post about not celebrating Bangladesh’s Victory Day, which is on December 16.The posts were reshared in the last four days and became a topic of discussion on social media and television news and shows in Bangladesh. Women’s right activists, writers and journalists criticised Tanzim for his posts.Yunus, who is also a BCB director, said that he spoke to Tanzim about the matter on Monday.”The cricket operations committee spoke to Tanzim Sakib on behalf of the Bangladesh Cricket Board,” Yunus said at a press conference at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday. “The media committee also got in touch with him. We informed Tanzim about the discussions surrounding his Facebook posts. He said that he didn’t write those posts to hurt anyone. He wrote it for himself, not targeting anyone. If those posts have hurt anyone’s feelings, he said he was sorry.”He said that the posts he has made about women, he takes full responsibility. He said that he is not a misogynist. We have warned him that if he posts something on Facebook in the future, the BCB will monitor him.”We are keeping an eye on this area [his mindset]. We will monitor him. His family is concerned too. They didn’t expect such a situation. They are also sorry. We have given him a warning because he is a young player, and a World Cup is ahead. If he does something like this again, we will take action against him. If there’s a [psychological] problem, we will provide support.”

Slot intensifies £20m Liverpool move as Trent now close to Real Madrid deal

Following the latest update on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future, Arne Slot has reportedly intensified Liverpool’s move to sign a potential replacement for just £25m this summer.

Alexander-Arnold "very close" to joining Real Madrid – Romano

Yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, Alexander-Arnold’s future has looked likely to be away from Anfield for a few months now – especially with Real Madrid lurking. And if there was any remaining hope that he would stay put this summer, then Fabrizio Romano’s latest update may well spark the beginning of the end for any talk of a new contract.

According to the reporter, the deal between Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold is “very close” and he is “expected” to join the Spanish giants on a free deal in a major blow for the Reds. Whilst it will be news for those around Merseyside, however, Slot has already reportedly set his sights on finding a replacement and one that he knows well.

According to Caught Offside, Slot is now personally intensifying Liverpool’s move to sign Givairo Read from Feyenoord this summer in a deal worth around €25m (£20m).

Liverpool sold "undervalued" star for just £15m, now he's like prime Foden

Liverpool could have done with an extra dimension in attack this season.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 25, 2025

The Reds reportedly see Read as a long-term solution to their fresh right-back problem following the 18-year-old’s solid campaign in the Netherlands. The fact that he’s already got an admirer in Slot should certainly help too – it was only this time last year that the Liverpool boss was handing Read his first-team debut at Feyenoord.

Now, the right-back looks set to get the chance to reunite with his former manager and complete the biggest move of his career yet.

"Fantastic" Read can replace Alexander-Arnold

After bidding farewell to their own academy graduate and one that Jurgen Klopp welcomed into the first-team, Liverpool would be wise to turn towards Feyenoord’s rising star and one that Slot brought through in the Netherlands.

AC Milan's Rafael Leao in action with Feyenoord'sGivairoRead

Read certainly looks talented enough to eventually replace Alexander-Arnold at Anfield too, having assisted as many as seven goals so far this season – the same number that Liverpool’s chief creator has managed.

Earning plenty of praise as a result, football talent scout Jacek Kulig was left in awe of Read’s “fantastic performances” against AC Milan in the Champions League this season.

When the summer arrives, it could yet be Liverpool left in awe of the teenager’s performances as they look to forget all about Alexander-Arnold’s likely exit in the coming months.

At 18 years old, Read already ticks a number of boxes for those at Anfield as they look to hand Slot a familiar face within his backline.

Harris, Swepson share six as Glamorgan chisel out advantage

Glamorgan’s bowlers fought their way back into this game, dismissing Sussex for 203 as the home side finished with a lead of 85 and 10 second-innings wickets standingA first-innings lead of 39 could be crucial in a low-scoring contest. Australian leg spinner Mitch Swepson took the last two wickets in two balls to wrap things up, finishing with 3 for 52, while seamer James Harris returned figures of 3 for 38.Sussex had started the day in a strong position on 65 for 1, but lost both not-out batters before a run had been added, with Fynn Hudson-Prentice then holding the innings together in scoring only the second half century of the match. When he went for 59, the rest of the Sussex innings folded. Glamorgan openers Zain-ul-Hassan and Andrew Salter went about patiently increasing that lead, as the home side finished the day on 46 without loss. The Australian Kookaburra ball is being used for this match, with Glamorgan’s bowlers using it to good effect to stem the runs for long periods as well as taking regular wickets. Sussex scored at just over two runs an over as they struggled to evade the fielders with their few attacking shots, as the home bowlers maintained a stranglehold. It was the 30th ball of the morning before Sussex added to their overnight score, by which time Timm van der Gugten had added his second wicket of the innings by bowling Tom Alsop for 27, while Jamie McIlroy dismissed Tom Clark lbw for 32.Then it was the turn of Harris to get in on the act, getting the wicket of James Coles with his first ball and then adding that of Danial Ibrahim to leave Sussex struggling on 95 for 5.Hudson-Prentice and Oli Carter were patient in their efforts to rebuild the innings before the wicketkeeper fell caught behind off the bowling of McIlroy. Nathan McAndrew was caught and bowled by fellow Australian Swepson.Offspinner Jack Carson then provided valuable support in a partnership of 61 with Hudson-Prentice which edged their team ever closer to Glamorgan’s first-innings total of 242. Carson was given a life when dropped by Billy Root off Zain, however, the end came suddenly as Glamorgan wrapped the innings up with three wickets in four balls.First Hudson-Prentice’s watchful innings was undone when he skied a short ball from Harris, then Carson fell lbw and Aristides Karvelas caught behind by Chris Cooke, both to Swepson who will be on a hat-trick ball when he next bowls.Zain and Salter found getting runs equally difficult in the early stages of Glamorgan’s second innings, before scoring a little more freely in the last few overs of the day. They will look to build a match-winning lead, while Sussex will take confidence from the way Glamorgan were able to keep taking wickets as the Kookaburra ball got older.
