Diogo Jota confirmed out of Arsenal v Liverpool, two others are late doubts

As Liverpool look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League, they’ll have to do so without one of Arne Slot’s key men against title rivals Arsenal at The Emirates, with two more Reds now late doubts as well.

Liverpool injury news

The Reds’ injury list is slowly beginning to increase in what is a worrying sign for Slot. Already, Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott find themselves sidelined long-term to particularly open the door for Caoimhin Kelleher to take his opportunity. The Irishman has so far grasped hold of his chance once again and will start against Arsenal hoping to secure Liverpool’s biggest result of the campaign so far.

The injury to Elliott is slightly more frustrating, meanwhile, given how the youngster was yet to really make his mark under Slot before being ruled out. Up against Arsenal though, the Reds will be feeling the full impact of at least one other absentee.

According to Slot, confirmed during his press conference, Diogo Jota will miss the Arsenal game after failing to travel to face RB Leipzig and coming off injured against Chelsea with a rib injury last weekend. There are also question marks over Federico Chiesa and Conor Bradley, who could return to training on Saturday but are unlikely to be fit enough to take full part.

"Cheeky" £24,000-p/w star favours Liverpool move after contract talks stall

He could replace Mohamed Salah…

1 ByTom Cunningham Oct 25, 2024

The Portugal international isn’t exactly unfamiliar with spells on the sidelines, with his struggle for full fitness often leaving fans to wonder what might have been if he could stay fit for the entirety of a campaign. Nonetheless, faced with another injury, Jota will have no choice but to sit out and hand the responsibility to Darwin Nunez in the biggest game of Slot’s tenure so far.

In a game that could reveal whether Liverpool are title pretenders or, indeed, contenders, Nunez must step up in place of his £140,000-a-week teammate.

Jota's incredible record vs Arsenal

When assessing those who can lead the Liverpool line, it is Jota who stands above the rest for his all-round quality. Where Nunez is erratic, Jota is clinical. Where Gakpo is subdued in that particular role, Jota is energised and at the centre of everything good that this Liverpool side does. So without him against Arsenal of all sides, the Reds are likely to suffer a big miss.

What’s more, given that Jota has scored eight goals and assisted another two in 15 games against Arsenal – his best record against a Premier League side – the Gunners will undoubtedly be pleased to see the forward taking his place in the stands rather than within Slot’s frontline.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Jota during his legendary tenure, saying via TNT Sports: “He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs. He has the technical skills, he has the physical skills and he is very smart and can learn all the tactical stuff pretty quick.”

The torch, however, now likely falls the way of Nunez to prove himself once and for all under Slot against Arsenal.

Gloucestershire appoint Dale Benkenstein as head coach

Former Proteas batter and batting coach returns to county cricket on a three-year deal

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Nov-2021Gloucestershire have appointed Dale Benkenstein, the former South Africa batter and batting coach, as head coach on a three-year contract.Benkenstein, 47, is also a former Durham captain who was head coach at Hampshire from 2014-16, helping them to reach two Vitality Blast Finals Days and secure promotion back to the top tier of the Championship in that time. He worked as Proteas batting coach from 2017-19 and has also coached South African side Dolphins. He joined Lancashire on a short-term contract as batting coach earlier this year and, most recently, Benkenstein was head coach at Mike Procter’s former school, Hilton College. He will lead Gloucestershire at least until the end of the 2024 season under a deal announced on Tuesday.”I am looking forward to working with a well-balanced squad of youth and experience and I feel the club as a whole have the ingredients to be consistently successful in all formats,” Benkenstein said. “It is exciting to be back involved in English county cricket where I have many fond memories.”Benkenstein made 300 List A and 264 first-class appearances during his 20-year career, scoring 15,962 first-class runs and more than 9,000 limited-overs runs.Born in Zimbabwe, he began his career at Natal, in South Africa, and after being named captain at the age of 22, took the side to four-day and one-day domestic titles. That led to Benkenstein making his ODI debut for South Africa against England in 1998 and he went on to play a total of 23 ODIs.He joined Durham in 2005 and captained them to their first major trophy in 2007, defeating Hampshire in the final of the Friends Provident competition. He then led Durham to back-to-back Championship titles in 2008 and 2009, the first in the club’s history. At Gloucestershire, Benkenstein will work alongside new performance director Steve Snell and assistant head coach Ian Harvey, who stepped in as interim head coach last March when Richard Dawson joined the ECB as elite performance pathway coach. Under Harvey, Gloucestershire won five of their group games and three divisional games, the most match wins for any side in this year’s Championship.Harvey said: “It’s been a huge honour for me to lead the team this season and I’m really proud of what the squads have achieved. Some of the performances in the County Championship in particular have been top class and there is no doubt these players have a bright future ahead.”I’ve been following the recruitment process with interest and there is no doubt that Dale is a great signing and I’m very excited to be working with him; I knew him as a fierce competitor on the pitch and I’m sure his style and considerable experience will produce great results for our club.”

Brendon McCullum: 'We were being paralysed a little bit by fear' at the start of IPL 2021

“I am unapologetic and unrelenting in my belief that we need to play a braver style of play”

Seven matches. Just two wins in those. And Kolkata Knight Riders are seventh on the table of eight in IPL 2021 as the second leg of the tournament begins from September 19 in the UAE. The poor start, according to head coach Brendon McCullum, was because the players were “being paralysed a little bit by fear” at times in those early games, but he feels the two-time champions “can end it right”.”In regards to the tournament which is upcoming [the second part of IPL 2021], we can end it right,” McCullum told . “We can take the game on and we’re in a situation where we need things to go our way. We need to hit the ground running, challenge one another privately, support one another publicly and try and get the best out of one another in the next four-five weeks. Who knows where we can go with this.”The Knight Riders began their campaign with a ten-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, but then lost four games in a row before bouncing back with a dominant five-wicket win over Punjab Kings, before losing one more, to Delhi Capitals. That more-down-than-up run has been down to inconsistent performances. Dinesh Karthik (123 runs at 30.75, strike rate 138.20), Andre Russell (163, 27.16 and 155.23) and Rahul Tripathi (187, 26.71 and 135.50) have been good with the bat, but captain Eoin Morgan has been poor, with just 92 runs in seven innings, and a strike rate of 112.19, while Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill, regulars at the top of the order, haven’t been able to get a move on either. With the ball, Varun Chakravarthy and Pat Cummins – the Australian is unavailable for the remainder of the tournament – have been the star performers, but the rest of the bowlers haven’t been as tough to get away.”There were sometimes throughout the season when I just felt we were being paralysed a little bit by fear,” McCullum said. “I wasn’t able to free the guys up enough to understand that and that’s sort of a challenge for me. But it is also a good challenge for the guys as well that they need to push the envelope of their own thinking as well.Related

IPL 2021 Part 1: Samson's refused single, Jadeja's 37-run over, Brar's golden scalps

“Hopefully we will be able to strip away a bit of the angst which had built up in the first part of the season, just go out there and try and enjoy ourselves. That’s the ambition that I have got for the franchise and hence why I am unapologetic and unrelenting in my belief that we need to play a braver style of play.”McCullum, a Knight Riders player when the IPL kicked off in 2008 – remember innings – took charge as chief coach of the Kolkata franchise, as well as at Trinbago Knight Riders, in 2020. While Trinbago went on to win the CPL title in 2020 at the end of a remarkable unbeaten run [they topped the table and are in the semi-finals this season too], the IPL team didn’t have it as good, failing to qualify for the playoffs. This season has not been much better. As far as McCullum is concerned, though, his focus is on the bigger picture. “When we left India [in May], I think everyone understood me as a coach on how I want our team to play,” McCullum said. “I am unapologetic about that as well because my job is to try and build something at KKR that is going to last far longer than I am going to last for the franchise.”

Celtic could land dream signing for Valle in swoop for "lovely" star

The summer transfer window officially slams shut for business on Friday night and Celtic have brought in four new recruits to bolster their squad so far.

Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel have arrived to improve the club's options between the sticks, whilst Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah have signed permanently after their initial loan spells last term.

Signing number five appears to be imminent as Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that full-back Alex Valle is set to join on loan from Barcelona for the season.

The Spanish defender could be joined by a player who could play ahead of him as a dream partner down the left flank for the Hoops this season.

Celtic eyeing late move for winger

According to Italian outlet Corriere Fiorentino, as relayed by Sport Witness, Brendan Rodgers is eyeing up a late Celtic swoop for Fiorentina forward Josip Brekalo.

The report claims that the Croatia international is likely to move on from the Italian side before the end of the summer transfer window on Friday.

It states that the £34k-per-week forward is attracting interest from teams in the Serie A as well as the Scottish Premiership champions, which means that they could face some competition for his services.

The outlet adds that the 26-year-old left winger could be available for the Hoops to snap up on loan in the next few days, but it remains to be seen if they will follow on on their interest with a formal approach.

Why Josip Brekalo would be a dream for Alex Valle

Firstly, the 20-year-old defender's form for Levante on loan in LaLiga 2 last season suggests that he is a defensive-minded left-back who does not get forward much.

Valle made 29 appearances in the second tier during the 2023/24 campaign and only managed 0.6 key passes per match, whereas the Spanish youngster made a whopping 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game.

This suggests that the Barcelona loanee would benefit from having a creative winger ahead of him on the left to make up for his struggles in that regard, whilst allowing him to focus on being a defensive wall at the back for the Hoops.

Brekalo, who was once hailed for his "lovely" technique by journalist Josh Bunting, spent the second half of last season on loan at Hajduk Split and his form suggests that the potential is there for him to be that creative forward.

As you can see in the table above, the Croatian whiz caught the eye with an impressive return of ten direct goal contributions in 12 starts in the HNL.

The 26-year-old ace, who produced 22 goals and 19 assists in 129 games for Wolfsburg earlier in his career, could come in and provide the creativity that Valle struggles to offer, which could make them a match made in heaven.

Imagine him & Idah: Celtic pushing to seal deal for "dangerous" £8m star

The Hoops are keen to bring the central midfielder to Parkhead before the deadline.

Valle could sit back and use his defensive instincts to win possession back and then play it simple to Brekalo, who can then show off his quality and creativity in the final third for Rodgers.

Zimbabwe follow-on after strong Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan bowling show

Zimbabwe bat again after being bowled out for 287 in response to Afghanistan’s 545 for 4 declared

Firdose Moonda12-Mar-2021

Rashid Khan finished with four wickets•Abu Dhabi Cricket

Stumps Afghanistan are ten wickets away from squaring the two-Test series against Zimbabwe, having enforced the follow-on in Abu Dhabi after dismissing the opponents for 287 in the first innings for a 258-run lead. On a pitch that’s taking turn but remains good for batting, Zimbabwe openers Kevin Kasuza and Prince Masvaure batted out the 13 overs before close in their second innings to shave 24 runs off the deficit.Rashid Khan and Amir Hamza shared seven wickets between them in Zimbabwe’s first innings and ensured that Zimbabwe were unable to build on a decent start. The opening pair of Kasuza and Masvaure put on 91 then, but Zimbabwe then lost four wickets for 54 runs before Tarisai Musakanda and Sikandar Raza steadied them. Musakanda and Ryan Burl were then dismissed in successive overs and Raza was again needed to do a repair job. He put on 53 with Regis Chakabva, Zimbabwe’s only other half-century stand, and after Chakabva was dismissed, Zimbabwe lost their last four wickets for 45 runs in the hour after tea and had to bat again.Khan, who got four wickets in the first innings, was given the new ball, which he shared with left-arm seamer Sayed Shirzad, who had a significant impact with the old ball in the first innings with two wickets in two balls. It was Shirzad’s double-strike in his first over after lunch that put paid to any thoughts Zimbabwe might have had of batting out the day.Which is what they must have hoped for at the start of the day, with Kasuza and Masvaure unbeaten overnight and the scoreboard showing 50 for no loss. But Kasuza reached for a wide delivery from Khan that he could have left alone to fall for 41, and Masvaure was then bowled by Hamza. Shirzad rushed Sean Williams into a pull, which he could only top-edge to midwicket, and then removed Wesley Madhevere for his second golden duck of the series. Shirzad found Madhevere’s outside edge with a delivery that angled in and left the batsman, who doesn’t have a run in Test cricket so far. Those wickets were a redemption of sorts for Afghanistan’s lone seamer in this match after a poor morning spell. His four overs cost 22 runs and Kasuza plucked boundaries off him with ease, forcing Asghar Afghan to use spin from both ends early on. Offspinner Javed Ahmadi found sharp turn but the breakthrough only came when Khan was introduced and removed Kasuza. Zimbabwe have gone without a century opening stand in almost ten years, since August 2011.Sikandar Raza top-scored for Zimbabwe in their first innings•Abu Dhabi Cricket

Musakanda was around when Masvaure got to his third Test fifty, which came with a quick single that almost led to the batsman being run-out at the non-striker’s end. Musakanda went on to a career-best 41 and was particularly severe on Khan’s short balls, but the legspinner had the last laugh when he trapped Musakanda lbw. In the next over, a Hamza delivery that turned in from the rough clipped Ryan Burl’s leg stump to dismiss him for a duck and leave Zimbabwe on 189 for 6 and staring down the barrel.Raza and Chakabva not only stabilised Zimbabwe but also took the fight to Afghanistan. They would have wanted to see Zimbabwe to the close, but Chakabva was victim to an outstanding catch from Ibrahim Zadran at short leg when he looked to work a Khan delivery to the leg side but sent the ball in the air, Zadran sticking out his left hand and taking the catch low to his right. That left Raza, who was on 43 at the time, to usher the tail and work towards avoiding the follow-on. He reached 50 off 80 balls and then saw Donald Tiripano given out four balls later to a catch at silly point although there did not appear to be any bat involved. Raza played some shots after that, whacking Khan over mid-on for four and Hamza over long-on for six, even as he tried to keep the strike away from Blessing Muzarabani.Afghanistan were on to Zimbabwe’s survival tactics and it was around then that we got a moment that may be talked about long after this Test is done and dusted. Raza hit a shot off the last ball of a Shirzad over, and the ball went towards the point boundary before stopping just short. But Hashmatullah Shahidi, in bending down to pick the ball up, had one foot over the line. The umpires awarded five runs to Zimbabwe allowed Raza to get back on strike as per Rule 19.8.None of that counted for much, though, as Muzarabani was run-out in the next over, and Raza holed out to long-off off the next ball to end Zimbabwe’s first innings.
