Robinson in spotlight again after McCullum reveals Ranchi fitness issue

England coach gives qualified backing to seamer following below-par return to Test whites

Vithushan Ehantharajah27-Feb-2024As England nursed the collective disappointment of their series defeat, head coach Brendon McCullum defended Ollie Robinson after a tough first outing in India. But Robinson finds himself at another juncture in a Test career only in its third year, with questions remaining about his robustness.Robinson had been primed for a pivotal role during the backend of this five-match series, and England pulled the cord for the fourth Test in Ranchi after impressive showings in the nets. The selection did not pay off.Despite starting the match with a maiden Test fifty, which helped propel England to a first innings of 353, Robinson disappointed with the ball. His average speed was in the late 70s mph – at one point, he dipped into the 60s – and there was nowhere near the level of incisiveness that 76 Test wickets at 22.92 show he can provide. He also bowled six no-balls, continuing a difficult relationship with that front line.Related

India's spinners deliver the sucker punch that England forgot to expect

Ben Stokes: 'Their skill was better than ours on this occasion'

Robinson sent down just 13 overs in the match, all of them in the first innings, before dropping Dhruv Jurel on 59, which allowed India an extra 41 runs in their reply. He was subsequently hidden in the field, and went unused in the second innings as England tried in vain to defend a target of 192. It was a chastening return to action after almost eight months.Speaking after the match, Ben Stokes said Robinson was fit to bowl and that a spinning track was the reason he was not utilised. But considering he has previously shown excellence on a variety of surfaces, along with his self-stated desire for the heat of the battle, it felt like a loss of faith from the England captain towards a player he had seemingly coaxed out of a funk in his first summer as Test captain.McCullum, however, revealed Robinson was carrying an injury he picked up while batting, which explains his listless spell with the ball: “He actually twinged his back while batting in the first innings, which is why in those initial couple of spells, he was down on pace. We saw the following day when his back improved a little bit his pace got up to where it normally is.”The head coach went on to vouch for Robinson, whose last competitive match was the summer’s third Ashes Test at Headingley – where his involvement was curtailed by a back spasm – but seemed at a loss to explain how such a well-planned selection had backfired.”I don’t think it was too soon, it was seven months since his last Test so if anything, it’s probably too long between,” McCullum said. “Everything he did leading into the Test match suggested we’d see not just the Ollie Robinson we’d seen previously but a better version of it.”For one reason or another it didn’t quite work out for him and obviously he’s not just as disappointed as everyone else, he’s the most disappointed out of everyone. Our job is to make sure we get around him and make sure we give him as much support and confidence to be able to go again when the next time arises. It’s just sport right? You have great expectations and sometimes you’re not quite able to deliver.”The player himself seemed primed for a big impact in India, arriving fitter and raring to make amends for a disappointing three Tests against Australia last summer. He has trained well throughout but there remains a sense he could give more.Ollie Robinson suffered a back strain while batting in Ranchi•Getty ImagesAmid a sea of multi-year central contracts, Robinson’s 12-month deal was aimed at motivating him to show he was worthy of a longer-term investment in the next cycle. Now a player who was supposed to replace Stuart Broad – even usurping Broad at points during his first 18 months as a Test cricketer – may find himself further down the pecking order, though McCullum suggested he retains his faith.”It’s a tough game for him no doubt and he’s hurting a lot. We’ve all seen Robbo bowl better than what he did and he’ll be the first to admit that. We’ve just got to get around him and make sure he chisels out a few of those things that didn’t work well this week. We know he’s a very good bowler. His record suggests he’s got talent and it’s just making sure that we can release the talent so he can get to the levels he wants to get to.”We know how skilled he is and we know his high release point and ability to move the ball off the seam and the skills he possesses are good enough for this level. We’ve just got to make sure we find a way to get the best out of him.”England are not blameless. They know he is a bowler who needs overs to be fighting fit, especially considering the lengthy gap between appearances. The tourists opted against warm-ups and engaged in what was a hugely positive pre-season camp in Abu Dhabi. But in hindsight, it would have been beneficial to get Robinson time in the middle, which could have come with England Lions. Their third match against India A in Ahmedabad started the day before the second Test in which James Anderson played as the lone quick in a spin-heavy attack. The management were also blindsided ahead of the tour when Robinson announced a new podcast with his partner, Mia Baker, a golf influencer. The pair have recorded episodes throughout the tour and, while largely innocuous, England, who exercise a degree of creative control over the extra-curricular activities of their contracted players, have been irked by some of the content, particularly when Robinson mentioned the ECB had initially made an error with his visa application. The revelation came at a time when the governing body was scrabbling around to sort Shoaib Bashir’s visa issue, which resulted in the Somerset offspinner arriving a week late, missing the first Test. The sixth episode, released this week, in which Robinson discussed the team’s mid-series break in Abu Dhabi, has subsequently been removed.Robinson’s previous Test appearance came during the Ashes in July•AFP/Getty ImagesWhether Robinson plays the fifth Test in Dharamsala remains to be seen. Conditions more amenable to seam suggest he could get a shot at redemption, though it seems likely England will stick with Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley along with Anderson, who is two away from 700 career wickets. One guarantee McCullum did offer was Jonny Bairstow will earn his 100th Test cap. It has been a challenging series for the 34-year-old, but scores of 38 and 30 on a tough pitch in the last Test has McCullum believing Bairstow will mark the occasion in style.”Yes he’ll be playing his hundredth Test. We expect a good Jonny. Jonny loves a milestone too. He won’t shy away from that. He’ll play. It’ll be really emotional for him.”Everyone knows Jonny’s story and as you guys will know he is quite an emotional character at times and big milestones like that do mean a lot to him. It’ll be a really emotional time for him and we look forward to sharing it with him.”The majority of the squad headed to Bangalore on Tuesday morning to get their golf fix. A smaller group – including Stokes – will make their way to a resort in Chandigarh on Wednesday, with the only concrete plan a trip to the cinema to watch . They will meet back up together in the foothills of the Himalayas next Monday, ahead of the start of the concluding Test on March 7.While England will look to take a creditable 3-2 scoreline home, McCullum hopes it will be the start of a new, more ruthless chapter for his charges. Having spurned opportunities in the Ashes and now again here, the time has come to learn from those mistakes.”We weren’t quite good enough when it mattered – or they were better, to be honest, than us being not quite good enough. Against Australia, we had our chances and weren’t quite able to get across the line. This team is still developing as a team. We’re a good cricket team. I think we’ve got the opportunity to be a really good cricket team.”There’s times in games where we haven’t quite screwed down on our method just yet. I still think sometimes we get outside the element of what needs to be done in the moment… or we have too much noise in our mind, so we need to find a way to be really totally present when those times arrive, identify that this is a crucial moment in the game, and try and strip away all the external stuff and just make a decision, and make it work.”If we do that, I think we’ll see this team go to the next level. We’re going good. We’ve lost this series and we didn’t win the Ashes – but we’re a better cricket team than we were 18 months ago. And we’ve got the opportunity in the next 18 months to do some pretty special shit.”

Diogo Dalot admits Manchester United players lost 'opportunity' to 'show we deserve to be here' in shocking Carabao Cup exit

Manchester United star Diogo Dalot has torn into his team-mates over the disastrous performance which led to their shock defeat by Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Dalot has revealed a frank assessment of his team's dire performance against League Two side Grimsby, who dumped United out of the Carabao Cup on penalties. While showing deference to the Mariners, Dalot believes United squandered an opportunity to prove their doubters wrong by allowing the hosts to win too many key battles during the clash at Blundell Park.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dalot's words reveal how much pressure United are under already after just three matches of the season. Following last term's woeful 15th-place finish in the league and a summer of high-profile new signings it had been expected that United would start strongly, but that has not been the case. The spotlight is firmly on boss Ruben Amorim and his ability to turn things round.

  • WHAT DALOT SAID

Dalot said: "I think we gave the game to them, clearly, straight away, exactly what they wanted. Win duels, second balls, set plays. We fought back, but I think that was the minimum that we could show to the fans that travelled for ourselves, for the club, but clearly not good enough. I don't want to go through the same sentence time and again. We just have to show (that) and we just lost one opportunity today to show that we deserve to be here."

United performed well in the season curtain-raiser with Arsenal and, despite that defeat, the signs looked positive. But the tepid draw with Fulham followed by humiliation against Grimsby has really turned up the heat on Amorim. The board have backed him in the summer transfer window which means performances and results must improve – starting on Saturday with the visit of Burnley.

Bumrah rested for fourth Test against England

KL Rahul is set to miss the fourth Test as well, while his participation in the final Test in Dharamsala is subject to fitness

Jasprit Bumrah has bowled 80.5 overs in the first three Tests, taking 17 wickets at an average of 13.64•BCCI

Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the fourth Test against England beginning on February 23 in Ranchi. KL Rahul, who missed the second and third Tests, is set to miss the fourth Test as well, while his participation in the final Test in Dharamsala is subject to fitness. The decision to give Bumrah a break has been made keeping his workload in mind – he’s bowled 80.5 overs in the first three Tests – with an IPL season coming up followed closely by the 2024 T20 World Cup beginning on June 1. There was speculation that Bumrah was going to be rested for the third Test in Rajkot but, with the series level at 1-1, he eventually played the fixture.Mukesh Kumar, who was released from the squad for the third Test in Rajkot, has joined the squad in Ranchi. He played the Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Bihar after being released, where he picked up a career-best match haul of 10 for 50 in a massive win for Bengal.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India now lead the five-match series 2-1 after a record 434-run victory in Rajkot, and they will have to find a way to make up for Bumrah’s absence: he’s the leading wicket-taker in the series with 17 wickets at 13.64 apiece. He was the Player of the Match in India’s win in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, where he took 9 for 91 across both innings.Mukesh, meanwhile, had played the second Test against England when Mohammed Siraj was rested but bowled only 12 overs in Vishakapatnam for figures of 1 for 70. If India play two fast bowlers in Ranchi, the choice for the second quick will be between Mukesh and the uncapped Akash Deep, who was included in the squad for the last three Tests after topping the wicket charts for India A in the recent first-class games against England Lions.Rahul had made scores of 86 and 22 during the defeat in the first Test in Hyderabad – the highest aggregate for India in the match – before missing the second Test with a quadriceps injury. He was included in the squad for the third Test subject to fitness, but was eventually ruled out with a sore knee. The fourth Test between India and England begins this Friday, just four days after the end of the third Test, while there is an eight-day gap between the end of the fourth Test on February 27 and the start of the fifth and final Test on March 7.India squad for fourth Test: Rohit Sharma (capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep

Trouble brewing at Barcelona as goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen trains away from Hansi Flick's squad following arrival of Joan Garcia

The dispute between Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Barcelona took another turn on Monday, as the German trained on his own to start pre-season.

Ter Stegen was not seen training with his team-mates upon their return to training, with Catalan reporter Gerard Romero posting a tweet that said the 33-year-old was working alone in the gym, with "no injury and no statement" from the club explaining the player's whereabouts.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

It's the latest development in an ongoing dispute that threatens to sour the club captain's departure from the club. Ter Stegen is adamant that we wants to stay and fight for his place, while manager Hansi Flick is believed to be insistent on playing the recently-signed Joan Garcia. It is believed the club are waiting for Ter Stegen to pursue a move, so he can continue to push for a starting spot for his native Germany at World Cup 2026.

Getty Images SportDID YOU KNOW?

The German stopper was promoted to club captain last season, but had a minimal role in the club's treble-winning season after rupturing his patellar tendon in a match against Villarreal last September. That injury, and his hefty wages, may well be factors in his compatriot Flick's decision to move on. The 24-year-old Garcia joined from inter-city rivals Espanyol for €25m in June, and is under a six-year contract.

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR TER STEGEN?

Despite his apparent insistence that he will stay and push to regain hius place between the sticks, Ter Stegen has been linked with a move to Monaco. He may well be forced into a difficult decision. Stay at Barcelona and see out the remainder of his admittedly lucrative contract in exile from his team-mates, or leave for a lesser-fancied club in order to further his international career. After years of sitting behind Manuel Neuer in the international pecking order, the latter may become more attractive the longer this saga rolls on.

Trott, Afghanistan lament sloppy fielding

Moments after Afghanistan’s head coach Jonathan Trott walked into the press-conference room at Chepauk, a wall-mounted TV displayed one of Afghanistan’s many drops in their World Cup game against New Zealand. Trott then lamented Afghanistan’s sloppy catching and urged them to improve on that front.”Well, we dropped a catch in the second over and we dropped a few catches, really,” Trott said. We dropped [Rachin] Ravindra on nought, we dropped [Will] Young on nought. So that sort of gives a little bit of momentum to the opposition.”I think if we had taken those and with the wicket of [Devon] Conway, we would have been in a much better position as well. Not only like they were, I think they were about 116 [110] for four at one stage. “So, we would have been in an even better position had we held on to those catches. But it wasn’t to be and unfortunately, we have to go home regretting those tonight.”Related

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi also expressed frustration over his team’s fielding effort in Chennai, where New Zealand trampled Afghanistan by 149 runs. In addition to shelling five catches, Afghanistan missed a stumping chance to let New Zealand off the hook on a two-paced Chepauk surface. Shahidi himself was responsible for two of those drops.”Very disappointed because in this level you have to take those kinds of catches. End of the day, the [dropped] catches hurt us,” Shahidi told at the post-match presentation. “The team was doing good, but the fielding, because of that we fell a little bit down.”Afghanistan had created a stir when they toppled defending champions England in Delhi, but then they suffered a drubbing against New Zealand in Chennai. Trott wants his players to tighten their fundamental skills and deal with pressure better.”Well, I certainly feel that [consistency] is what’s needed,” Trott said. “I think that’s the only thing really stopping this team is doing the basics really well and that’s consistency. So, if we had taken our catches and put New Zealand under pressure like we should have, I think you’d be looking at, not saying it would have changed the results as a fact, but you would have been looking at a very different performance.”And that starts with the mindset of doing the things that seem really simple, but doing those day in, day out, regularly, and religiously. It’s always standing in good stead because they’re generally the things that will look after you when you’re out there under pressure. And that’s what’s exposed us today, unfortunately.”Allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai, though, was a silver lining for Afghanistan, following up his double-strike with 27 off 32 balls against a skillful New Zealand attack on a helpful surface. Omarzai dismissed both Ravindra (32) and Young (54) in his first over before Tom Latham and Mark Chapman tore into him in the slog overs. Omarzai was also particularly impressive in the 2022-23 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), coming away as the highest wicket-taker among overseas players and fourth highest overall with 15 strikes in 11 matches at an economy rate of 7.17. Trott backs him to become a future star for Afghanistan.”I see him with a very bright future with the bat and with the ball,” Trott said. “I think the way he bats at the moment is developing really well and he is playing nicely. I would have liked him to have batted for a bit longer tonight and get a few more runs, but I’ve always rated him as a bowler and his bowling is coming on leaps and bounds.”Unfortunately today, he couldn’t quite get it right in the death overs when you needed him to. That was unfortunate and perhaps put them slightly ahead of where they should have been at one stage.”

Having been left out of England's Under-21 squad so he could play at the Club World Cup, Delap had to watch the first 64 minutes from the bench as Chelsea laboured against LAFC. But, after replacing Nicolas Jackson, the £30 million ($41m) signing from Ipswich, helped the Blues up the intensity. The young striker got plenty of joy pulling into the right channel and quickly threatened by driving toward the touchline and cutting a ball back that went agonisingly begging in the box. But it was from a similar position that he subseuqently set up the crucial second goal that ensured Chelsea claimed maximum points and started the competition with a win.

Delap replaced Jackson, who had himself assisted the opening Chelsea goal for Pedro Neto during the first half, and it seems like that is going to be a regular battle over the coming 11 months. They might occasionally play together and the competition should drive both forward, but the likelihood is that usually only one will start.

"The message is always the same," Enzo Maresca warned ahead of the game. "You arrive, you work hard, you work more than the other No.9 and you’ll be No.9 first choice. Tthe conversation with Liam has been quite clear."

    WHAT NEXT FOR DELAP?

The question everyone is now asking is: will Delap start Chelsea's next game? The Blues are up against Brazilian giants Flamengo on June 20. Jackson didn't exactly play badly against LAFC, so if Maresca wants to stick with his usual 4-2-3-1 formation and not compromise his wingers, this is his first big decision of the next chapter.

Suryakumar and Tilak do the chase in a canter to keep the series alive for India

A sublime 44-ball 83 from Suryakumar Yadav, peppered with boundary shots all around the park, kept India alive in the T20I series against West Indies, although the scoreline still reads 2-1 in West Indies’ favour going into the USA leg of the five-match contest. India were in a spot of bother when their two openers fell early in the chase of 160 – also the highest target of the series so far – but Suryakumar, the world’s No. 1 T20I batter, counterattacked with ten fours and four sixes. His innings left the West Indies bowlers with few answers, and allowed Tilak Varma to quietly settle in and play a decisive supporting role. Tilak blossomed after Suryakumar’s dismissal to finish with an unbeaten 49 himself, a third straight innings of promise and the first one to come in a victory.West Indies, who won the toss and opted to bat, scored 159 for 5, which seemed solid on the slow surface. But with a steady drizzle coming into play in the second innings, their bowlers had a tougher time compared to the Indians. They failed to replicate what India’s spinners – led by KuldeepYadav’s three-for – did, and the series now moves to the USA with India possibly with the momentum.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Kuldeep leads India’s spin dominance

West Indies captain Rovman Powell chose to bat at the toss, citing the used Providence surface, and India too believed the surface was slow, using nine straight overs of spin starting from the third over. Openers Brandon King (42) and Kyle Mayers (25) found the occasional boundaries in the powerplay, but the combination of Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal ensured West Indies could score only 38 runs in the first six overs.Axar then got the first breakthrough when Mayers mistimed a slog sweep, ending the 55-run opening stand, after which Johnson Charles’ sluggish innings allowed Chahal and Kuldeep to settle down. Kuldeep got on the scorecard when he successfully reviewed an lbw call to dismiss Charles with a googly. With Nicholas Pooran coming in at No. 4, India went back to pace, with Hardik bowling his second over. But Pooran pounced on Kuldeep’s left-arm wristspin from the other end to show signs of a repeat from the second T20I, where he had scored a 40-ball 67.Kuldeep, though, charged back strongly in his final over despite being aware of Pooran’s appetite for big shots. He had Pooran stumped for 20 with a legbreak and then held on to a sharp caught-and-bowled chance to remove King. And with the set batters gone, West Indies were left with two new batters, as the final five overs approached.Rovman Powell played a captain’s hand with an unbeaten 19-ball 40•Associated Press

Powell cameo gives West Indies big finish

With four overs to go, and West Indies at only 113, they needed the experienced pair of Shimron Hetmyer and Powell to step up. While Hetmyer fell in the 18th over to Mukesh Kumar’s first delivery of the match, Powell ran hard between the wickets to pick up twos when available, and then muscled the Indian quicks for boundaries.Full tosses from Mukesh and Arshdeep Singh were dispatched, and when Arshdeep missed his yorkers and served up slot deliveries, Powell pummelled them for two more sixes in a 17-run 19th over to give West Indies hope of a 160-plus score.A six over the leg side from Powell in the final over, bowled by Mukesh, who had given away just two runs off his first four balls of the over, helped West Indies, but they could only set India 160 for a win. After the game, though, Powell said that West Indies were a few runs short, having “lost our way in the middle overs”.

SKY turns it on, Tilak produces another class act

Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal was out in the first over of the chase to Obed McCoy while trying to muscle a shot over the leg side, and soon after, an out-of-sorts Shubman Gill returned for 6 in 11 balls after top-edging Alzarri Joseph, West Indies’ best bowler on the day.But between the two dismissals, Suryakumar was quick off the blocks – he hit a four and six off his first two balls – and motored along at breakneck speed. Suryakumar didn’t let the dangerous Akeal Hosein settle down in the powerplay either, with a boundary apiece in the left-arm spinner’s first two overs.Suryakumar Yadav brought up his half-century in just 23 balls•AFP/Getty Images

Tilak began in Suryakumar’s vein with two boundary shots after he walked into bat in the fourth over after Gill’s wicket. The two of them then combined to pump 17 runs off McCoy in the final powerplay over to put India well ahead of the DLS par score with rain in the air. After the powerplay, though, it was the Suryakumar show, where a spread outfield made no difference to India’s vice-captain. Roston Chase’s full toss was flicked to wide long-on, before back-to-back fours off Romario Shepherd took Suryakumar to his half-century in only 23 deliveries. As the rain got heavier – but not heavy enough to stop play – the wet ball made it tougher for the West Indies bowlers to execute their plans, and Suryakumar pounced on the smallest of errors in length or line to punish them. A scoop over fine leg and a carved shot behind point off Shepherd in the tenth over deflated West Indies further, and at the halfway mark of the chase, India were 97 for 2 and in total control.Suryakumar eventually fell on 83 – two balls after hitting Joseph for his fourth six of the innings – when he tried to flick a loose ball to fine leg, but by then the required run rate was well under six. In Hardik Pandya’s company, Tilak took charge of the chase with a precise pull off Hosein and a heave over square leg for six off Shepherd. Both Hardik and Tilak also displayed solid communication when running between the wickets, and Tilak moved to 49 in the 18th over with India needing two more to win. However, he would be left stranded one short of his second T20I fifty when Pandya drilled Powell for six over long-off to seal India’s win with 13 balls to spare.

Maresca driving Chelsea move to sign "unbelievable" £50m+ Brighton star

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is now keen on a move for an “unbelievable” Brighton star to play a key role at Stamford Bridge next season, according to a report.

Robert Sanchez struggling at Chelsea

Maresca has defended Robert Sanchez at times this season, with the manager insisting he trusts his goalkeeper, despite making yet another error in the 3-1 defeat against Manchester City back in January.

It was not the first time Sanchez has made a costly mistake this season, with the Spanish goalkeeper making five errors leading to goals in the Premier League up to this point, the joint-highest number of any player.

As such, the 27-year-old has recently dropped to the bench, with Filip Jorgensen taking his place in the last three matches, but the Dane has also struggled at times, conceding three goals in a poor performance against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton kept a clean sheet that day, prevailing 3-0 at the American Express Stadium, with Bart Verbruggen putting in a solid display, and now GiveMeSport have revealed Chelsea are considering a summer move for the goalkeeper.

Maresca is named as the driving force behind the potential move, with the manager tempted to raid the Seagulls for yet another player, having identified Verbruggen as a good fit to come in and become the first-choice option between the sticks.

However, a deal will not be cheap, as Brighton are said to be holding out for a fee of at least £50m, amid interest from Manchester United, who are contemplating bringing in a replacement for Andre Onana.

Diogo Costa and Caoimhin Kelleher also remain of interest to the Blues, who are set to sell at least one of Sanchez, Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic or Mike Penders at the end of the season.

"Unbelievable" Verbruggen impressing Hurzeler at Brighton

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is clearly enjoying working with the Dutch goalkeeper, having taken the time to praise him earlier this season, saying: “I really enjoy working with him because he is an unbelievable character.

“For his age he is very mature and he sees things very professionally. That is why he is a role model for everything. I think he can play a big part in the future of the club.”

The 22-year-old has been a key player for Brighton this season, making 25 appearances in the Premier League, however, he has also been quite error-prone, having made four mistakes leading to a goal.

The Netherlands international has only made one fewer major error than Sanchez, and Chelsea’s current shot-stopper has the edge on some other key metrics over the past year.

As such, while it is clear to see why Chelsea want a new goalkeeper this summer, it would probably be wise to steer clear of Verbruggen.
