'Listen to your heart' – Mashrafe Mortaza's captaincy tip to Tamim Iqbal

Former ODI captain asks his successor to take the young match-winners in his team along with him on the ride

Mohammad Isam05-May-2020Mashrafe Mortaza has asked Tamim Iqbal to trust his “gut feeling” when he leads Bangladesh out to the field as their new ODI captain, but also told his junior colleague to be patient when it comes to dealing with the noise around the team.”You will hear a lot of advice as a captain – ‘do this, do that’; but as long as you listen to your heart, you will be able to sleep at night even if you lose,” Mashrafe told Tamim during a conversation on Facebook. “You will be unhappy if you had to do what other people told you. I have always believed in this.”I won’t tell you how to do your captaincy, but you should do what your heart desires. Of course, you will have Shakib [Al Hasan], Mushfiq [Rahim] and [Mahmudullah] Riyad around you, but if you listen to your gut feeling, you will be more successful.”ALSO READ: Life in the time of Mashrafe, by Tamim and MahmudullahMashrafe, who resigned from the ODI captaincy in February, asked Tamim to back the younger players like Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das and Mustafizur Rahman to move forward.”Bangladesh’s reality is a little different. You have to be patient. If you can make the players understand that you will do everything you can for them, they will give the best for you,” Mashrafe said. “As long as I am confident in your ability, it doesn’t matter what others are saying. You have match-winners in Soumya, Liton and Mustafiz, so if something is being said about them, you have to handle it.”Everyone had a lot to say about Shakib batting at No. 3 in the [2019 50-over] World Cup. Shakib was confident that he could handle the pressure. My point of view was that if he failed in two matches, nobody would be more concerned than Shakib. He knows how to handle the pressure. I backed him fully because I felt he would have maximum impact at No. 3.”

I never really supported your view of being reluctant about captaincy. Why wouldn’t you be the captain? You already have leadership qualitiesMashrafe to Tamim

Shakib had a standout tournament, hitting 606 runs in eight innings, with two hundreds and five fifties, scoring at an average of 86.57 and a strike rate of 96.03. Bangladesh, however, couldn’t get into the final four.As such, while Tamim has been a senior player in the Bangladesh side for long, he has been a bit of a reluctant captain, taking charge only in one Test and three ODIs over the years. But Mashrafe suggested that Tamim’s leadership role off the field would be useful for him in his new position.”I never really supported your view of being reluctant about captaincy. Why wouldn’t you be the captain? You already have leadership qualities,” Mashrafe said. “The BCB will give you the captaincy for a long time, but that’s up to them. You have to accept it properly.”You didn’t accept it properly in Sri Lanka [when he led in ODIs last July] but seeing you now, I feel you are on the right track. Bangladesh cricket will take the next step very soon.”

Faf du Plessis praises 'team of fighters' as South Africa discover their spark

A “gut feeling” and the spark of a fight led to South Africa taking the crucial wicket of Ben Stokes and getting their own back against Jofra Archer as they took the series lead against England. South Africa’s first Test win in six matches and first since January hinged on a key moment and a key battle: Stokes’ wicket in the second innings and the contest with Archer, and they won them both.Stokes was dismissed for 14 off 55 balls after spending an hour and 12 minutes patiently waiting to take South Africa on, while Archer was bounced out after delivering two beamers in South Africa’s innings that they thought should have seen him taken him out of the attack. Targeting the pair of them was South Africa’s way of signaling their rediscovered intent and sending a message about the way they want to play the game going forward: tough, but fair.South Africa were hoping to wrest the advantage from England late on the second afternoon when Archer, frustrated with the runs he was conceding and eager to dismiss the nighwatchman, Anrich Nortje, bowled a beamer and then a similar high full toss. If that had been called a no-ball, Archer could have been removed out of the attack. When he wasn’t, South Africa were determined to exact their revenge.ALSO READ: SA embrace struggle to re-embark on road to success“It’s a South African thing. We are a team of fighters,” Faf du Plessis said. “We love something that sparks a little something like that. Our feeling was that when he comes in, we will do exactly the same thing to him. We were pretty upset at the time, thinking the umpires would take him off. We were prepared to go short at him as well to make sure he gets the same.”South Africa took on Archer with both bat and ball, with Quinton de Kock clubbing him for three sixes and a four and Nortje aiming for his head. De Kock’s approach allowed South Africa’s lead to build quickly while Nortje’s took them ever closer to victory. “The way Quinny played just showed why Quinny is such a good player,” du Plessis said. “We are very fortunate to have him in that position – No. 6 or 7 is where he has been so good for so long. And Anrich was bowling so well, we thought he would get another wicket.”Nortje’s notched up the best performance of his three-Test career with an exceptional vigil as nightwatchman – a two-hour stint that yielded 40 runs during a match-winning stand with Rassie van der Dussen – and 3 for 56 in the second innings. Though it is still early days, Nortje has staked his claim as a regular to step up in Vernon Philander’s absence and impressed his captain with his all-round contribution. “As a team, we don’t have a lot of superstars,” du Plessis said. “You can say guys like KG and Vern are our stars but we take a lot more from victories where everybody contributes. Small things like Nortje getting 40 with the bat. Our bowling unit was exceptional. All of them put their hands up.”Keshav Maharaj claimed the key wicket of Ben Stokes•Associated Press

None more so than Keshav Maharaj, who took the wicket of the one man who could make the impossible, possible: Stokes. Maharaj was hit for three fours in the second over of his afternoon spell but kept on, after du Plessis’ hunch that he would make a breakthrough.”We had a lot of confidence in Kesh,” du Plessis said. “We kept saying that we feel that in the second innings Kesh would get Stokes out. And the way that Stokes plays, he is going to take the game on. We just had a gut feeling it was going to happen. He was a massive wicket for us at that stage. Stokes has proved that if he is around he can win the game on his own. Even though Kesh didn’t bowl as much as he would have liked, the wickets he got for us in the second innings were huge.”Maharaj also took the wicket of Dom Sibley, ending an opening stand of 92. Other than that, Maharaj went under the radar, as the four quicks stole the spotlight, but du Plessis was adamant the spinner remains a key part of South Africa’s plans, even with two allrounders in the team.”For a while we have been thinking that [playing two allrounders],” du Plessis said. “It’s easier for me to work with different bowlers then. In the past, on wickets that didn’t spin I had to go to Kesh and he has always produced. As a team we are much more balanced with the allrounders.”In the end, South Africa’s combination in this Test gave them more options than they have previously had, showed them the potential they have on the circuit and restored their confidence after a difficult 2019. “It’s been a tough season, and been a while since our last victory. We trained hard and there was a good feeling in the camp that we’d done some really good stuff. We knew we needed to put in some performances to get the engine running,” du Plessis said.

West Ham now in pole position to land Premier League star in big-money deal

Whilst West Ham United may still be thinking about their 4-3 loss against Newcastle United after taking an initial 3-1 lead, reports have handed the Hammers the best news possible to bounce back from defeat.

West Ham transfer news

The London club, now a consistent European side who still have a chance to shock the world once again by getting closer and closer to reaching the Europa League final this season, could be in for a busy summer transfer window. Before that, however, they must put an end to their managerial doubts and hope that David Moyes reaches a decision about his future sooner rather than later.

West Ham must now bench 4/10 man who was even worse than Phillips

The Hammers suffered a damaging collapse at St. James’ Park in the Premier League

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 30, 2024

The former Manchester United boss is yet to sign a new deal and is, therefore, on course to leave West Ham at the end of the season. With that said the Hammers have already been linked with the likes of Graham Potter and Steve Cooper regarding the potentially vacant job this summer in two options who have the benefit of Premier League experience.

Chelsea's Graham Potter

Whoever may come in, they will instantly be tasked with repeating the work of Moyes and more by helping West Ham into Europe yet again. And reports suggest that one incoming could be on his way to taking the Hammers to the level needed for that.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, West Ham are now in pole position to sign Brentford's Ivan Toney this summer, with Arsenal cooling their interest in the forward recently. The England international, supposedly valued at £70m, is likely to be involved in one of the most expensive deals of the summer in the Premier League and one of the biggest shocks could be he joins West Ham.

In need of a new number nine, there's no doubt that Toney would take West Ham to the next level going forward.

"Amazing" Toney could transform West Ham

If West Ham want to bridge what has previously seemed like an impossible gap between themselves and the Premier League's top four, then signing Toney is certainly the way to go about it. The Brentford man, who has the same agent as James Ward-Prowse, is clinical at his best and would undoubtedly be an upgrade on Michail Antonio this summer, as his stats in a full season prove.

Thomas Frank will be left wondering just how to replace Toney if he does depart this summer, having sung his praises last season, saying:

“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects. The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member.

“Ivan trains well and he’s clearly the number two striker in England, that’s proven by his goals and performances."

Aston Villa must play “outrageous” ace in new role to ease Ramsey’s injury

Aston Villa have been absolutely fantastic all season long, with Unai Emery guiding his team to fourth in the Premier League.

Their latest victory occurred at the weekend, as Lucas Digne scored a late winner to defeat Luton Town 3-2 on the road.

Matty Cash.

Ezri Konsa returned to the starting lineup after a spell on the sidelines, and Ollie Watkins netted his 15th and 16th league goals of the campaign.

However, one individual picked up another setback to add to the list of injuries suffered by the Villans over the last month.

Jacob Ramsey’s latest injury

After winning the U21 European Championships with England in the summer, Jacob Ramsey was meant to go to a whole new level this season, but he has been unable to due to reasons out of his control.

At the start of the campaign, the Villa academy star suffered a foot injury that saw him miss eight games, and since November, he’s been slowly building himself up, making 16 Premier League appearances.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

However, the 22-year-old was forced off in the 29th minute against the Hatters due to injury, and he was seen leaving the ground in a protective boot.

There has been no further update on his current issue, but his involvement in the huge European clash against Ajax seems unlikely, and therefore, someone is going to have to take his role in the starting lineup.

Emery's "outstanding" Aston Villa signing is now worth more than Grealish

Aston Villa signed a player in 2023 who is worth more than Grealish

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 2, 2024 Youri Tielemans could replace Ramsey

Youri Tielemans has been one of the bargains of the season, with Villa signing the Belgian international on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer.

Since his move to the Villans, the “outrageous” star, as dubbed by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, has featured 33 times across all competitions, and despite being a midfielder, Emery has fielded him in a second striker role recently, playing just off Watkins.

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Villa were already stretched in the midfield department because of the season-ending injury to Boubacar Kamara last month, so the added Ramsey problem may force Tielemans further back.

Luckily, the 26-year-old is a central midfielder by trade, with his FBref scouting report from last season in the Premier League showcasing his ability as a box-to-box eight.

As you can see, Tielemans has a versatile profile that not only allows him to be a threat in the final third but also enables him to provide defensive security to the side.

Ramsey’s injury means that we could see Tielemans drop into the inverted left-midfield role, which would allow his creativity and ball progression to flourish much more than they've been able to when playing higher up the pitch.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Furthermore, his proactive approach to defending, as shown by his high ball recoveries and solid tackle stats, would fit the role perfectly. Moussa Diaby could also thrive due to this potential switch by Emery, with the French gem being much more dangerous than Tielemans, as shown by his nine goal contributions in the league.

Overall, the absence of Ramsey might not actually be as significant as once anticipated when he was subbed off, with Tielemans being the perfect replacement for the young midfielder.

Arsenal fumbled their own homegrown Eze with release of PL star at 13

Arsenal are well and truly back in the Premier League title race.

Mikel Arteta's side have won their last five games in a row and have dramatically improved their goal difference after blowing away West Ham United and Burnley.

While the entire team deserved credit, Martin Odegaard has perhaps stood out the most, with his three assists and one goal suggesting that he could well be back to the form he showed last season.

martin-odegaard-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-jeremy-doku

With how impressive the captain has been of late, Arteta would surely have to have two of him in the team, and as outlandish as that sounds, the Gunners once released a youngster from Hale End at 13 years old who is now similar to the mercurial Norwegian.

Eberechi Eze's journey to Crystal Palace

Yes, you read that right; the Gunners once had a young Eberechi Eze on their books, only he wasn't with the club for very long as he was released at just 13 years old.

The next few years were tough for the Greenwich-born gem as he was released by Fulham, Reading and Millwall before finally finding his footing in West London at Queens Park Rangers.

The dynamic midfielder would make his debut for the Hoops in an FA Cup Third Round tie against Blackburn Rovers in January 2017.

Still, it was not until the 2018/19 campaign that he truly established himself in the first team after spending the first half of the 2017/18 season on loan in League Two with Wycombe Wanderers before coming back to finish the year at Loftus Road.

In the following campaign, Eze would score four goals and provide four assists in 42 appearances for QPR before exploding in 2019/20 and scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists in 46 appearances.

Such a remarkable return from a young player understandably brought with it eyes from the Premier League, and after some negotiations, Crystal Palace signed Eze for £20m.

How Eberechi Eze compares to Martin Odegaard

Now, it's undoubtedly a big shout to compare a very talented midfielder with one who is captaining a team fighting for the league title, but it's one made primarily by the football database FBref.

The comparison is made by grouping positionally similar players in Europe's top five leagues and then ranking them based on how close they are to one another for several key metrics, and in this case, Odegaard is considered to be the seventh most similar player to Eze.

For example, the "silky" Palace gem, as described by former teammate Geoff Cameron, produces 0.55 expected goals and assists per 90 to the Norwegian's 0.48 while also producing 2.95 progressive passes per 90 to his 2.90.

This obviously doesn't make them identical players, but there is an undeniable similarity in their underlying statistics, which suggests that they could play similar roles within a team.

So, it would certainly have been beneficial for the Gunners to keep a hold of the talented Englishman as not only has he produced 34 goal involvements in 113 appearances for the Eagles, but he could also act as the perfect backup to their captain.

Oh, and there is also the small fact that the CIES Football Observatory now values him at around €40m, which is about £34m, and that is likely a conservative estimate in today's game.

Arsenal fumbled their own dream homegrown Rice partner for £0

The 21-year-old has been impressing on the continent in recent years.

Ultimately, football clubs can't predict the future, and maybe Eze, who scored ten Premier League goals last season, did not show enough potential when he was 13, but they may now regret letting him go as it appears as though they fumbled their own homegrown version of their current captain.

CSA declares R200 million loss for 2018-19

In the previous financial year, CSA recorded profits of R350 million after Australia and India visited, resulting in much larger revenues

Liam Brickhill08-Sep-2019Cricket South Africa has declared a loss of Rand 200 million (US$13.5 million approx) for the 2018-19 financial year after their AGM in Johannesburg on Saturday.CSA’s approved financial statements, published in their integrated report for 2019, detailed the losses, which, incidentally, marked an improvement on the budgeted losses of R222 million ($15 million approx). CSA put the improved result down to cost-cutting initiatives, as well as increased investment returns. The board’s total revenue for the year was R929 million ($63 million approx) down from R1.5 billion ($101 million approx) over the previous year.CSA’s financial statements showed that the organisation still has a cash balance of R349 million ($23.5 million approx), as well as reserves of more than R850 million ($57.5 million approx). The chair of CSA’s finance committee, Iqbal Khan, also revealed that plans had been put in place that had reduced the previously projected deficit of R654 million ($44 million approx) over the next four years down to R120 million ($8 million approx).”There are those CSA bashers who peddle the narrative that we are bankrupt, but our only crime is that we were transparent and honest,” CSA president Chris Nenzani said in his address at the AGM. “We did our own sustainability analysis, which showed us that if we did not do anything, there would be a R654 million hole. We said that, we raised the alarm, whatever the populist narrative says.”In the context of the four-year financial cycle on which CSA operates, in the previous financial year, CSA recorded profits of R350 million ($24 million approx). Prior to that, there were losses of R158 million ($11 million approx), while in 2015-16, there were profits of R107 million ($7 million approx).Much depends on the incoming tours: last season, South Africa hosted Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, all three of which were loss-making tours. The previous season, Australia and India visited, resulting in much larger profits. The England and Australia men’s teams will be visiting South Africa in the coming season.Nenzani also broached the subject of the recent restructuring exercises in CSA’s administration. He said that the chief executive, Thabang Moroe, had been given greater responsibility, rather than greater power.”Our board decisions have always been taken unanimously or by consensus and there is also a healthy relationship between the board and the senior management,” Nenzani said. “The board has given the senior management and specifically our chief executive more responsibility, not power, and with that comes an escalated level of responsibility. The CEO remains accountable to the board and we will hold him to that.”Nenzani also focused on South Africa’s performance at the men’s World Cup, calling it “a monumental failure”, and the reason behind the board’s decision to introduce a new team structure. It was also confirmed at the AGM that Nenzani would serve an extra year as CSA’s president. Board vice-president Beresford Williams suggested that the extension was necessary to keep CSA on a stable footing as the organisation restructured.”The board and the members’ council agreed that we would ask Chris to stay on because there are a number of changes about our cricket at the moment, we’re looking at our whole model and making fundamental changes, and we felt we needed him to share his expertise and wisdom,” Williams said. “It was a unanimous decision. We are fully confident in the leadership we have, they have led well and the results and outcomes have been pretty good.”As well as being CSA president, Nenzani is on the ICC’s board of directors and is chairman of the future tours programme and finance committee.

Can Bangladesh exploit India's weaknesses and stay alive?

Mahmudullah has recovered from the calf injury he picked up against Afghanistan, and is expected to play on Tuesday

The Preview by Karthik Krishnaswamy01-Jul-20193:00

Nafees: If Mahmudullah not fit, bring in Sabbir

Big pictureThey’ve beaten South Africa, they’ve brushed aside West Indies, and they’ve looked impressive even in defeat. They are still in contention for a semi-final spot, just about, and they might have had an even more realistic chance had rain not kept them from playing Sri Lanka in Bristol.Rather than ruminate over what could have been, however, Bangladesh will want to focus on what can still be: they win their two remaining matches. First up are India, fearsome opponents in many ways but also one with weaknesses in key areas, namely the middle and lower order. Those weaknesses, exacerbated by injury, give Bangladesh a clear target: get early wickets, and somehow get past Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. It’s easier said than done. And we haven’t even mentioned India’s bowling.Still, Bangladesh couldn’t be meeting India at a better time. Their vulnerabilities have been plain to see in their last three games, they are no longer unbeaten, and they’re playing their second game in three days. Most of Bangladesh’s batsmen, on the other hand, have been in solid form, their superstar is having one of the great World Cups for an allrounder, their bowling is more than useful on slow pitches – Edgbaston fits that description – and they are playing after an eight-day gap.But India are experts at shrugging off setbacks and putting up calm and professional displays against teams they are expected to beat. Bangladesh know this well: they’ve pushed India hard in each of their last three meetings at ICC tournaments. But whether in Melbourne, Bengaluru or, indeed, Birmingham, India have found a way to win. Will Birmingham 2019 be any different?Form guideBangladesh WLWLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India LWWWWIn the spotlightHe’s a hero for what he puts his knees through every time he plays, and an inspirational captain, but Mashrafe Mortaza’s primary skill is his fast bowling, and he won’t be pleased with his returns at this World Cup: one wicket in six games, an average of 279.00, and an economy rate of 6.34. Can he summon up the spirit of Trinidad 2007 and produce a big performance in a must-win game?Against well-directed bowling and smart fields on a slow pitch, with India’s required rate climbing into absurd territory, and with only a long tail to come, MS Dhoni did the sensible thing against England, and played for net run rate. The widespread censure that came in that innings’ wake will not bother him overly, but one thing should worry him ahead of the game against Bangladesh. He has struggled to score quickly against spin for quite a while now, and particularly so at this World Cup – 41 off 87 balls, one four, zero sixes. What plans does he have to combat all the overs of Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan and Mosaddek Hossain he is likely to face in the middle overs?MS Dhoni plays a shot•IDI via Getty Images

Team newsMahmudullah was Bangladesh’s one big injury worry ahead of this game, with the batsman having picked up a grade 1 tear in his calf during the match against Afghanistan. But the eight-day gap between that game and this one has given him enough time to recover, and he is likely to feature on Tuesday.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Liton Das, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mosaddek Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan, 9 Mohammad Saifuddin, 10 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 11 Mustafizur RahmanIndia’s wristspinners struggled to come to terms with the flat pitch and asymmetric ground dimensions against England, and went for a combined 160 from their 20 overs, while picking up just the one wicket. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar back to full fitness after suffering a hamstring injury against Pakistan, India could leave out one of the wristspinners and play three fast bowlers. Alternately, if they choose to retain faith in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal but want to strengthen their lower order, Bhuvneshwar could replace Mohammed Shami, who picked up five wickets against England but was expensive at the death.India (probable): 1 KL Rahul, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav/Yuzvendra Chahal, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Jasprit BumrahPitch and conditionsThe same Edgbaston strip that hosted the England-India game on Sunday will be in use once more. If it plays similarly, it should be flat but slow down as the match progresses, which will favour the team batting first. The position of the pitch on the square will also mean one square boundary is significantly shorter than the other. Kohli wasn’t too pleased with this, and his side did not match England’s know-how, with ball or bat, in exploiting this quirk, but now that they’ve played one game here, they might be better prepared for the challenge.4:08

Agarkar: Couldn’t see any intent to hit the big shots from Dhoni, Jadhav

Strategy puntRather than a like-for-like replacement for the injured Vijay Shankar, India have called in Mayank Agarwal, an opening batsman who is yet to make his ODI debut. With KL Rahul not quite coming off at the top of the order, and with Rishabh Pant not yet seeming to possess the middle gears of a top-notch No. 4, India could be looking to return to a combination similar to the one they played before Shikhar Dhawan left the tournament with a broken finger. The game against Bangladesh may come too early for Agarwal, but India could still think of moving Rahul back down to No. 4 and pushing Pant up to open. This could have two positive effects on their team composition. It will give them an aggressive left-hand option to partner Rohit Sharma and allow him to take his time settling down, and it could also allow Rahul to face more spin. At this World Cup, he has averaged 21.25 against pace, with a strike rate of 56.29, as against 87.00 and 88.78 against spin. Rahul’s ability to play the reverse-sweep – a shot most of India’s middle order doesn’t play that much – and target the shorter boundary could also come in handy.Stats that matter Soumya Sarkar is one of only six batsmen in ODI history to score more than 1000 runs as opener at a 30-plus average and a strike rate of over 100. If he scores 53, Mahmudullah will become the fourth Bangladesh batsman to score 4000 ODI runs. Jasprit Bumrah is five wickets short – and Kuldeep Yadav eight wickets short – of 100 in ODIs.Quotes”We have to be 100 per cent in every area. Good thing that we still in the tournament but we have to play a lot better than what we played in our previous games.”
, wants still more from his team.”It does because when you have not major combinations coming from the lower order a Bhuvneshwar Kumar becomes vital or anybody who is handy at No. 8, maybe, could be [Ravindra] Jadeja. What it does is it gives a bit of a freedom to somebody batting at 6 and 7 so that they could start going at the bowling maybe, if you are batting first, a little earlier rather than leaving it for the last three or four overs. It is a tactic we have been debating about [while discussing] the team combination. We will have to reassess those combinations.”

No Hojlund, Pogba 2.0 signs: The dream XI Omar Berrada could build at Man Utd

Every transfer window, Manchester United are linked to masses of players, and that has only enhanced this January with Erik ten Hag’s side struggling to live up to the high standards of a Red Devils team.

Nevertheless, the focus for this window will be on outgoings rather than arrivals, but the boss is still keen to make at least one addition to help his side recover from their disappointing first half of the season, which sees them sit in seventh in the Premier League.

In fairness to the boss, injuries have played a role in preventing him from fielding his best side this season. That said, things are beginning to look more positive behind the scenes with Omar Berrada, previously of rivals Manchester City set to replace Richard Arnold as the club's new CEO.

Having previously helped broker deals for Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish, it's safe to say he knows a thing or two when it comes to the transfer window. Thus, what could United’s dream starting XI look like once Berrada's had a chance to get his feet under the table when he arrives later in the year?

1 GK – Andre Onana

United’s number one shot-stopper, Andre Onana, will continue to start in between the sticks.

The former Ajax star has kept the joint second-most clean sheets in the Premier League, despite dealing with plenty of critics.

2 RB – Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot will face stiff competition from Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the right-back spot, but the Portuguese should start over the English full-back.

Ten Hag has favoured Dalot this season, and he has started all but three Premier League games this season while averaging the most tackles per game in the United team, 2.3.

3 CB – Jean-Claire Todibo

Nice defenderJean-Clair Todibo.

Jean-Claire Todibo is the first new name to feature in the United starting XI, with the centre-back replacing fellow French star Raphael Varane in the team.

According to reports in France earlier this month, the Red Devils are favourites to land the Nice defender, however, due to the hefty fee of around £52m, a move is likely to occur in the summer instead.

The 24-year-old has been a rock at the heart of the Nice backline, helping his side pick up eight clean sheets this season, which is why scout Jacek Kulig described him as a "French wall." Todibo would elevate United in possession and when playing out from the back, as he ranks in the top 8% for passes completed in Ligue 1.

4 CB – Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez returned from injury against Spurs last time out, which caused an almighty cheer from the Stretford End.

The Argentine is the first choice left centre-back and has been since his arrival in the summer of 2022. The World Cup winner will not be displaced in the defence.

5 LB – Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw is another player who is nursing an injury currently, but he should be back fit for Wolves away on the 1st of February.

When in the side, he offers a staggering amount of progression from deep, and last season he ranked in the top 8% among positionally similar players in the Premier League for passes into the final third, as per FBref. The 28-year-old walks into the United team when he is available.

6 DM – Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo won Ten Hag over during pre-season, and due to injuries to Casemiro, and Sofyan Amrabat failing to impress, the 18-year-old has cemented himself as a guaranteed starter in the midfield.

Despite being inexperienced, the academy prospect shows maturity in and out of possession, and given his lack of competitors, the boss should continue to show faith in the star boy.

7 DM – Youssouf Fofana

The second potential new signing for Man United is Youssouf Fofana of Monaco. Towards the end of December, reports suggested that Ten Hag's team were monitoring the French midfielder and could make a move before the end of January.

Fofana – previously compared to none other than Paul Pogba on Football FanCast – is a midfielder who can operate in multiple roles within the centre of the pitch, but he is at his best in a double pivot where he can act as a box-to-box player, much like Pogba.

His shots total of 1.8 per game and his key passes of 1.3 per match highlight the 25-year-old's ability to affect the game in the final third, while his athleticism and power let him cover ground quickly.

Christian Eriksen or Scott Mctominay have been used alongside Mainoo as of late, but Fofana would walk into the team ahead of the underperforming duo.

8 RW – Alejandro Garnacho

With Antony failing to score or assist this season, Ten Hag has been forced to move Alejandro Garnacho over to an unfamiliar right-hand side role. However, since operating on the right, he has thrived and shown the United faithful what they have been missing.

The 19-year-old has the joint-second-most goal contributions with five, averages 2.3 shots per game, and 1.4 successful dribbles, for the Red Devils this season. The Argentine is most definitely nailed down in the right-wing role for the time being, but Amad Diallo could provide competition soon.

9 AM – Bruno Fernandes

michael-olise-bruno-fernandes-liverpool-opinion

Portuguese Magnifico and United captain Bruno Fernandes is arguably the only irremovable player in the starting XI. The 28-year-old started every single Premier League game he was available for last season, and he created the most big chances in the league, 32.

The number eight hasn't quite been at his best this season, but he still leads the way for shots, key passes, and assists.

10 LW – Marcus Rashford

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford is having a troubled campaign so far, but his performances have improved recently, and he has contributed to a goal in each of his last four.

The number ten netted 17 goals in the Premier League last season, and when he is confident, there are not many better forwards in the Premier League, never mind United. With Garnacho swapping flanks, Rashford will make the left wing his home again.
