Patrick Boyland heaps praise on “brilliant” Everton star who gave Barry first goal

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland was full of praise for one Everton star, who played a pivotal part in Thierno Barry’s first goal for the club against Nottingham Forest.

Everton ease past Nottingham Forest

After battling to beat Bournemouth in midweek, Everton had the chance to move up to fifth in the Premier League with victory over Nottingham Forest and David Moyes’ side duly obliged. The Toffees had the perfect afternoon against former manager Sean Dyche, with Barry capping off a fine afternoon with his first goal since arriving for £27m in the summer.

It’s been some time coming for the summer signing, who has smashed the woodwork, had VAR intervene and everything in between before finally getting the chance to wheel away in celebration at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It’s Moyes who should take plenty of credit. After all, it is the veteran manager who decided to stick with his goal-less forward, only to reap the rewards 90 minutes later.

The Toffees are seeking a defensive reinforcement.

Aside from the forward’s first goal for the club, it was a fine display from the Toffees all round. The hosts wasted no time before getting going, with Nikola Milenkovic’s own goal handing them the lead as early as the second minute.

It was then Everton’s to lose and Barry’s effort just before the break all but put them out of sight, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added a third in the 81st minute.

For all their goalscorers, however, it was another player who received the praise of Boyland for the role he played in Everton’s second goal before the break. The Athletic reporter dubbed Iliman Ndiaye “brilliant” in the build-up as the Frenchman continued his role as the Toffees’ talisman.

Boyland heaps praise on "brilliant" Ndiaye

Boyland watched on as Everton struck Nottingham Forest on the counter on the brink of half-time, praising Ndiaye as “brilliant” when he raced past the halfway line before finding goalscorer Barry.

Barry will steal the headlines, but Ndiaye deserves plenty of credit. He has been Everton’s main man since arriving last season and has more than played his part to take Moyes’ side into the top five, for the time being at least.

By the time that the final whistle sounded against Forest, the winger had one assist to his name and had even completed 13 defensive contributions – summing up his impact at both ends.

If those at the Hill Dickinson Stadium are to secure a shock European place this season, then Ndiaye’s role will be more important than ever.

Mooney 94* seals finals spot for Scorchers, Heat finish tournament winless

Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 94 helped Perth reach their target of 165 with seven wickets to spare

AAP06-Dec-2025Beth Mooney has led Perth Scorchers back into the WBBL finals, executing the perfect chase against Brisbane Heat and ending Melbourne Renegades’ title defence in the process.Needing 165 for victory in a must-win game at the WACA on Saturday, Mooney hit an unbeaten 94 from 61 to help Perth reach the target with seven wickets and four balls to spare. The victory ensured the Scorchers would have a home final, knocked the Renegades out of the top four and handed the Heat the first winless season in WBBL history. With one game to play in the season, Hobart are guaranteed top spot and hosting rights for next Saturday night’s final at Ninja Stadium. Perth and the Melbourne Stars are also locked into finals spots, with the winner of the Sydney Sixers and Adelaide at North Sydney Oval on Sunday morning to join them. The WBBL’s finals system has third and fourth face off in eliminator on Tuesday, before the winner of that plays against second on Thursday for a spot in the final. The Stars could have wrapped up second spot on Saturday morning had they beaten the Sydney Thunder at Junction Oval, only for them to be well beaten. Instead Perth are now in second, and will stay there if the Strikers beat the Sixers on Sunday.Facing a tricky chase after Georgia Redmayne’s 57 helped the Heat to 164 for 7, Mooney took control of the game at the WACA. Australia’s veteran opener regularly picked balls up off her pads and hit them over the legside to the rope, hitting 12 boundaries in a near-flawless knock. The Scorchers’ chase threatened to wobble late when Maddy Darke (24) and Sophie Devine (13) fell, but Mooney held her nerve and Freya Kemp’s late hitting saw Perth home. The leading run-scorer in WBBL history, Mooney now has scores of 105, 75 and 94* for the season and will enter the finals as one of the league’s most dangerous players.

Barcelona player ratings vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Jules Kounde to the rescue! Unlikely hero secures huge Champions League win as super-sub Marcus Rashford sparks fightback

Jules Kounde was the unlikely hero for Barcelona on Tuesday in the Champions League. Eintracht Frankfurt silenced the Camp Nou by taking a shock lead in the first half through Ansgar Knauff. but were pegged back after the break. Marcus Rashford was the catalyst for the hosts, coming off the bench and teeing up Kounde to level matters minutes after the break, and the French full-back then sealed the 2-1 win with his second of the game from a Lamine Yamal cross.

Barcelona have made a habit of conceding first this season and did so again at Camp Nou midway through the first half. Nathaniel Brown clipped a superb ball over Barca’s backline to find Knauff running through on goal, and the winger managed to fend off Alejandro Balde and fire past Joan Garcia to hand Eintracht a shock lead.

Hansi Flick's side enjoyed plenty of possession after the goal, but struggled to create clear-cut chances, meaning it was no surprise to see the German coach tweak his side at the half-time break. The ineffective Fermin Lopez was replaced by Rashford as Flick sought more cutting edge and threat in attack.

The England international made an instant impact after being played through by Pedri down the left. Rashford could have gone for goal himself, but cut the ball back to Raphinha, who could only blaze wildly over the crossbar. Minutes later and Rashford's impact really was felt by the visitors, as the Manchester United loanee's deep cross from the left was headed home by Kounde to make it 1-1.

Kounde may have been an unlikely goal-scorer for Barcelona, but the France international was celebrating again just three minutes later. This time it was Yamal who swung in a cross from deep for Kounde to head Barcelona in front. The goals seemed to drain the belief out of Eintracht as Barca went on to dominate proceedings and secure the win that keeps alive their hopes of automatic qualification from the league phase.

GOAL rates Barcelona's players from Camp Nou…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Joan Garcia (7/10):

Couldn't do too much about the goal but dealt confidently with everything else thrown at him.

    Jules Kounde (8/10):

Still looks miles below his best form but popped up with two crucial headers to seal the win. He also becomes the first Barca player to score two headers in a Champions League match.

    Pau Cubarsi (7/10):

Looks far happier with Martin alongside him. Put in a super challenge to deny Eintracht midway through the second half.

    Gerard Martin (6/10):

Stretched out a leg but couldn’t block the pass to Knauff for the opening goal. Had a great effort in the first half which flew just over.

    Alejandro Balde (6/10):

Chased back desperately with Knauff but could not prevent him opening the scoring.

    Midfield

    Eric Garcia (6/10):

Should have closed down Brown quicker for the opener, but otherwise put in another solid shift. Much better in the second half.

    Pedri (8/10):

The classiest operator on the pitch by some distance and helped Barcelona take control of the game after half-time.

    Fermin Lopez (5/10):

Looked lost on his return to the team. Struggled to connect with his team-mates and his usual goal threat was missing. No surprise to see him hooked at half-time.

    Attack

    Lamine Yamal (7/10):

Looked isolated in the first half and lost the ball in the build-up to Frankfurt's goal. He was better after the break and grabbed an assist for Kounde to make it 2-1, but picked up a booking which rules him out of Barca's next Champions League game.

    Robert Lewandowski (5/10):

Scored an early goal which was ruled out for offside but otherwise offered very little. Taken off for Ferran just after the hour.

    Raphinha (6/10):

Back in the starting XI but never really got going and was hooked early in the second half.

    Subs & Manager

    Marcus Rashford (8/10):

Made the difference off the bench at half-time. Was really lively throughout and bagged an assist for Kounde. Could have scored himself but saw an effort deflected over the bar.

    Ferran Torres (7/10):

Added more energy and invention to the attack.

    Frenkie de Jong (6/10):

Came on to firm things up and help Barcelona see out an important win. Not afraid to attack the box.

    Andreas Christensen (N/A):

    Late sub for Yamal.

    Roony Bardghji (N/A):

    Another late sub.

    Hansi Flick (7/10):

Made changes to his team and they simply didn't pay off as Barca struggled in the first half. Made the right decision to send on Rashford at half-time which helped spark the comeback.

'Psychological boost' – Erling Haaland reveals why Man City weren't 'happy' with Kylian Mbappe absence after Real Madrid victory

Erling Haaland admits that the absence of Kylian Mbappe in Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid handed Pep Guardiola’s side a “psychological boost”, but insists they were “not happy” at seeing the French superstar remain benched. Mbappe saw no game time as City left Santiago Bernabeu with a morale-boosting 2-1 win in elite European competition.

Why Mbappe sat out Real Madrid's clash with Man City

Premier League giants City headed to Spain fully expecting World Cup winner Mbappe to pose their defensive unit plenty of problems. He was known to be nursing a knock, but was still included in Xabi Alonso’s matchday squad.

The France international remained rooted to the bench even when Real found themselves trailing in the second half of a heavyweight encounter. Rodrygo’s opening goal of the evening was cancelled out by Nico O’Reilly and a penalty from Haaland.

The Blancos opted not to take any risks on Mbappe’s fitness, with the 26-year-old ‘Galactico’ nursing a knee complaint. Alonso needs him fit and firing in what has been a faltering bid for La Liga title honours in 2025-26.

AdvertisementGettyHaaland had been hoping to line up against Mbappe

Seeing Mbappe among the substitutes – with 25 goals to his name this season – offered a timely shot in the arm to City. Haaland is, however, adamant that they would rather have faced one of the best in the business.

The prolific Norwegian, who has taken his own goal tally this season to 21 through as many appearances at club level, told : “We know about their injuries, we have a few as well, but they have many injuries and you don't want anyone to be injured, but we expected Mbappe to play.

“I thought I was going to play against Kylian, so, of course, when a player like Kylian doesn't play, you're not happy because you want to play against the best, but it gives you a bit of a psychological boost.”

Haaland converted from the spot against Real having won that decisive penalty himself. He was bundled over in the box by Antonio Rudiger and was given the opportunity to step up from 12 yards following a VAR review and advice to the referee for a pitch-side monitor to be checked.

City’s fearsome No.9 added on the physical tussle that he enjoyed with Madrid’s defence: “[Raul] Asencio was starting to push me and try to beef with me a lot. It's something I like. And, of course, Rudiger as well, we've been having some great battles and today he wanted a bit too much, he pulled me. So, for me, a clear penalty.”

Notable scalp: City delight in victory at the Bernabeu

From seven previous visits to the Bernabeu, City had just one win to show for their efforts – a 2-1 success back in February 2020. They suffered a 3-1 defeat at the same venue in February 2025 and were fully aware of how big the challenge they faced was.

Guardiola had his troops well prepared, though, and they were able to claim a notable continental scalp. Haaland was full of praise for the manner in which City set about downing Madrid – especially after falling behind.

He said: “It's difficult to come here and the game has loads of transitions. We could have had another goal. I was close on one in the second half, Jeremy [Doku] was close a few times but the game was a bit chaotic. We can't really control it, which is difficult and it's difficult to come here, so in the end, we're super happy.

“It could have looked completely different today if we didn't win because we lost against Leverkusen, so this win is really important. Now we've got two more games left so we need to finish strong now and hopefully we can be in the first eight because then we're through.”

GettyMan City fixtures: Domestic action now the focus

City have risen to fourth in the Champions League table, but are only one point clear of ninth-placed Liverpool. Padres Manager Sent Firm Message After Dodgers Hit Fernando Tatis Jr. With Pitch

The San Diego Padres-Los Angeles Dodgers rivalry intensified once again as the benches cleared in the ninth inning of Monday's game after right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch. With the Padres leading 5-0, Dodgers pitcher Jack Little hit Tatis in his right hand with a pitch and Tatis immediately fell to the ground in pain.

Padres manager Mike Shildt came out to check on Tatis, who was hit by a pitch for the second time in the series. Shildt soon after got into it with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, and the benches of both teams cleared as tension swirled.

Following the game, Shildt stated "enough is enough" while pointing out that Tatis has been hit by a pitch against Los Angeles three times this season and five total times over the last two years. No other team has hit Tatis with a pitch more than four times over his entire career.

“After a while, enough’s enough,” Shildt said, via KWFN-FM in San Diego. “Intentional, unintentional, the fact of the matter is I took exception with it.

"You mess with people's careers, you mess with people's seasons," Shildt said. "We've got a guy that's in there getting drilled and got X-rays. That's not good enough. That's not cool. He's our dude and I got him and I got our whole club."

Roberts said after the game that the Dodgers did not hit Tatis intentionally. "I think anyone would understand there’s no intent there," he said, via AJ Cassavell and Sonja Chen of MLB.com. "And even by my reaction, I didn’t feel good about Tatis—great player, good guy—getting hit."

Tatis's initial X-rays came back negative, but he is scheduled to get a CT scan and MRI on Friday.

Following Tatis getting hit, Padres pitcher Robert Suarez would hit designated hitter Shohei Ohtani with a pitch, resulting in Suarez's ejection. The next day, it was announced that Suarez was suspended for three games and both Shildt and Roberts would be suspended for one game each.

A.J. Hinch Ejected After Controversial Call Confirmed by Replay in Extra Innings

The nightcap of the day-night doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates had it all Thursday.

The Tigers' mascot tried—and failed—to troll Pirates ace Paul Skenes. Pirates reliever Dennis Santana took a swipe at a fan from the dugout. And to finish the night, there was a rain delay in a tied game during the bottom of the ninth inning. When play resumed, the game went to extra innings and the Pirates scored the go-ahead run on a controversial call.

In the top of the 10th inning, Ke'Bryan Hayes hit a single to right as he pinch hit for Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz. Tommy Pham was on second and was waved home, which made for a bang-bang play at the plate. Tigers right fielder Kerry Carpenter threw a dart to home that catcher Jake Rogers gathered as Pham slid home.

Pham was called safe which gave the Pirates the lead, but Tigers manager A.J. Hinch challenged the call. Rogers's glove clearly was on top of Pham before his hands could touch the plate—the question was whether Rogers tagged him or if the tag went over Pham's arms before he touched home plate.

After review, the call stood and Pham remained safe with the go-ahead run staying on the board. Hinch quickly ran out of the dugout to argue the call and earned his first ejection of the season. You can watch the full sequence below:

And here's a couple screengrabs of the tag. The first appears to show Rogers get it down for an out at the plate, but the second—and the video review—looked to show the tag went just over Pham's arm.

The Pirates scored three more runs in the 10th inning and went on to win 8–4. The Tigers took the first game of their Thursday doubleheader 9–2.
