Patterson repels Morris to give New South Wales vital lead

This match will have a huge say in who reaches the Sheffield Shield final and the home side spent the whole day in the field

Tristan Lavalette07-Mar-2025Kurtis Patterson stared down hostile bowling from quick Lance Morris on a tricky WACA surface and batted almost through day two in an indefatigable effort as New South Wales built a handy first innings lead against Western Australia. In a pivotal Sheffield Shield fixture, NSW reached stumps on top with captain Jack Edwards and Chris Green making invaluable contributions before the close.Related

After 13 wickets fell on the opening day, the match appeared to be moving at warp speed in echoes of last month’s remarkable WA-South Australia clash at the WACA – the shortest outright result in Shield history.NSW teetered at 26 for 4 in reply to WA’s first innings of 196 before No. 3 Patterson, who was dropped twice, rescued the innings with unwavering powers of concentration to make 86 from 262 balls. He survived an onslaught late on the opening day before defying WA’s strong attack until he finally fell to Morris in the final hour of play.Patterson departed short of a deserved century, but continued his outstanding Shield season where he has now tallied 697 runs at 69.70. Patterson had an intriguing battle with Morris, who straddled sharp pace and control to good effect and finished with 4 for 25 from 18 overs.Morris, playing a rare back-to-back Shield match, does have a restriction of around 30 overs per game coming off a stress fracture last winter as well as a quad strain late in the pre-season. “I think I’m going to be a little bit restricted [bowling for the rest of NSW’s first innings], need to keep a few [overs] up the sleeve if we want to try and chase a result,” Morris said after play.Just 0.24 points separated second-placed NSW and WA before this round began with a victory for either team putting them in pole position to reach the final.Resuming at 17 for 3, NSW were initially in a battle for survival on day two but WA were left to rue an early chance off Patterson when Sam Fanning dropped a tough catch at short leg.Lance Morris was a threat but his workload is being managed•Getty ImagesNighwatchman Liam Hatcher, the second used in the innings, succumbed quickly when he was late on a short delivery and miscued to quick Cameron Gannon, who dived forward to take a sharp return catch in his follow through.Having claimed two wickets during a fiery spell late on the first evening, Morris bowled angrily after the earlier missed chance off his bowling. He consistently bowled around 140kph and bent his back to ensure the ball sizzled past the helmets.Matthew Gilkes unwisely took his eyes off the ball on one particularly fierce short delivery from Morris and copped a blow to the grill. He was shaken but stuck it out and provided good support for Patterson, who dropped anchor and scored just eight runs off his first 50 deliveries. After such a torrid time against pace bowling, his eyes lit up when offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli came into the attack and he swept superbly to finally get the WACA’s legendary scoreboard ticking over. But Patterson had more fortune on 27 when Fanning dropped another tough chance at short leg much to the despair of Rocchiccioli, who occasionally produced sharp bounce and turn.Patterson and Gilkes batted cautiously after the resumption knowing that wickets fell in clumps at the same stage on the previous day. The surface appeared to be flattening and an increasingly confident Patterson started to trust driving as he reached his half-century off his 156th delivery with a lovely stroke through the covers. The milestone – rare in recent times at the WACA – received strong applause from his team-mates in the terraces, notably Sam Konstas who earlier in the day’s play had been mobbed by kids desperate for selfies.WA looked out of answers until the 93-run partnership – lasting over 41 overs – was broken seemingly out of nowhere. Gilkes, who earlier had almost been run out, turned slowly on the second run and was short of his ground after a brilliant throw from Jayden Goodwin at fine leg was collected at the stumps by wicketkeeper Joel Curtis. It gave WA an opening, but NSW were still confident given they had plenty of batting still at their disposal having used up two tailenders for nightwatchman roles. Playing against his former team, Josh Philippe was aggressive against the old ball and clubbed a massive straight six into the ground’s construction site leading to a brief stoppage.Philippe’s run-a-ball 26 ended when the towering Gannon showcased his athleticism with his latest brilliant catch at gully. But WA’s bid to wrap up the innings was thwarted by Edwards as NSW batted through the day’s play against the odds.

Virgil Van Dijk nearly punched the player Liverpool are considering instead of Guehi

After missing out on Marc Guehi at the 11th hour, Liverpool have now reportedly set their sights on signing another Premier League rival when 2026 arrives.

How Liverpool missed out on Guehi

The medical was complete, the fee was agreed and a goodbye video had even been put together by Crystal Palace. All that was really left to do was for Guehi to sign on the dotted line and for Liverpool to announce his arrival. That was until chaos at Selhurst Park erupted, however.

In a mini-civil war at the club, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to quit if chairman Steve Parish sold Guehi to Liverpool on deadline day. It was either the £35m fee or his manager, Parish had to choose. And when Igor Julio ditched a move to Crystal Palace for West Ham United, there was only one option for the Eagles.

It’s the one deal that Liverpool failed to get over the line and they may regret not doing so. Recent reports have emerged which claim that Real Madrid are now interested in signing Guehi when his contract expires next summer and, as Liverpool know all too well, the Spanish club rarely miss out on their targets.

Whilst that move could end up benefitting them if Ibrahima Konate signs a new deal and stays put as a result, Arne Slot could still do with another central defender in 2026.

Higher ceiling than Isak: Liverpool make £100m superstar their No. 1 target

Liverpool are already planning for the future after their incredible spending spree this summer.

If it’s not Guehi, then Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes must get back to the drawing board before doing what they do better than most when the opportunity arrives.

Liverpool eyeing Van Hecke swoop

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool are now eyeing a move to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2026, having already sent scouts to watch the defender in action. Joined by Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in an early race for his signature, Liverpool could yet push on to land an impressive Guehi alternative.

In possession, Van Hecke should be Liverpool’s man. His progression numbers last season were excellent, especially compared to Guehi, who got the better of the Brighton man when it came to ball recoveries and tackles.

Whether the Reds believe that Van Hecke can eventually match Guehi’s dominance off the ball is the big question, but he certainly puts himself about, nearly causing a full blown fight between himself and Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk this time last year.

Praised as a “great character” by Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, the 25-year-old has shown he’s not afraid of anyone in the Premier League and a big move now awaits. With just two years remaining on his current deal at The Amex, Liverpool could even land a bargain deal to sign Van Hecke if they are willing to wait until next summer.

Newcastle United's most expensive signings of all time

Newcastle United have splashed the cash under PIF in recent years, welcoming a number of European stars to St James’ Park. The spending spree has also worked, with the Magpies qualifying for the Champions League back in 2023 and again in 2025, while also winning the EFL Cup.

Detailed look at Newcastle's 10 most expensive signings… 10 Harvey Barnes £38m from Leicester City

Winger Harvey Barnes was a long-term target for the Magpies, who eventually signed him from Leicester City for £38m after the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League in 2023.

Barnes had a brilliant individual campaign but couldn’t keep the club in the top-flight, instead signing a five-year St James’ Park deal. The Englishman arrived at the club with plenty of Premier League experience during his time with Leicester and has gone on to star in black and white.

9 Bruno Guimaraes £40m from Lyon

What a signing. Sky Sports has Bruno Guimaraes’ fee at £40m in January 2022, and he was so good in his initial six month-spell that Newcastle could have sold him for double that last summer, with reports suggesting champions Manchester City could have been plotting a player-plus-cash deal to bring the midfielder to the Etihad Stadium.

Instead, they held onto the Brazilian, and that was certainly the right move. Bruno looks like one of the best midfielders in the Premier League right now and Newcastle will do well to find a better signing anytime soon.

8 Joelinton £40m from Hoffenheim

Joelinton arrived for a club-record fee from Hoffenheim as the answer to Newcastle’s goalscoring woes in the summer of 2019. The £40m they paid, per The Guardian, always looked strange as the Brazilian had only scored seven times the previous season, while the most he’d ever managed was eight.

Thus, many joked about Joelinton during his early days on Tyneside, and it appeared Newcastle had made the wrong transfer as he finished his first campaign with two goals. However, it turned out they were just using him in the wrong position. After switching to a midfield role, the player looked transformed and now that £40m fee looks like a very good deal.

7 Jacob Ramsey £43m from Aston Villa

Jacob Ramsey

6 Anthony Gordon £45m from Everton

Sky Sports say Newcastle paid £45m for Anthony Gordon, which sounded like a lot at the time. However, the winger has now justified that fee and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

In fact, Gordon’s displays during his first full season with the Magpies resulted in him being linked with a move away from the club. Instead of leaving, though, the Englishman signed a fresh long-term Newcastle deal towards the end of 2024.

5 Yoane Wissa £55m from Brentford

On what was a dramatic deadline day in the summer of 2025, Yoane Wissa signed for Newcastle with 30 seconds to spare before the window slammed shut.

A long-term Newcastle target, Wissa pushed for a move to the Magpies from Brentford, costing £55m and taking the number 9 shirt at St James’ Park.

4 Anthony Elanga £55m from Nottingham Forest

Newcastle’s early summer signing in 2025 was Anthony Elanga, who cost £55m after an impressive few years at Nottingham Forest.

The pacey right-winger contributed to four goals in five games against the Magpies for Nottingham Forest, which may have caught PIF’s eye.

3 Sandro Tonali £55m from AC Milan

Sandro Tonali celebrates for Newcastle

Sandro Tonali arrived in a high-profile transfer from AC Milan in 2023, however, months after Newcastle splashed the cash, the Italy international was suspended for ten months following illegal betting charges.

The midfielder returned in 2024, and since then, Magpies supporters have seen why the club were willing to spend £55m on his signature, with Tonali a regular in the starting lineup.

2 Alexander Isak £60m from Real Soceidad

The arrival of Alexander Isak was a coup for Newcastle and a true statement that they wanted to sit at the top table. The Swedish striker was one of the top young strikers on the planet and few questioned the £60m fee in 2022, as reported by the BBC.

However, the summer of 2025 changed everything between Isak and Newcastle, with the forward going on strike, looking to sign for Liverpool. He got his wish, with the Magpies recieveing a British record £125m fee for Isak from Liverpool.

1 Nick Woltemade £69m from Stuttgart

Prior to Isak’s departure, Newcastle broke their transfer record by signing young German forward Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.

After starring at the U21 European Championships, Woltemade was linked with the likes of Bayern Munich but instead moved to St James’ Park in a deal worth £69m.

USMNT x MLS: Matt Freese shines after NYCFC contract extension, while Orlando City's Duncan McGuire gets game-winner in return from months-long injury recovery

GOAL reviews the major takeaways from Americans playing in MLS, including Freese's goalkeeping heroics for NYCFC

To say the march to the MLS playoffs is heating up is a understatement. With just under a month of the regular season remaining, there are eight clubs with a realistic chance of claiming the Supporters' Shield. And there have already been seven teams eliminated from the playoffs – five from the Eastern Conference.

The USMNT national pool has several players who are becoming significant factors. Matt Freese helped NYCFC ice their trip to the postseason (see what we did there) with a win over the previously surging Charlotte FC. Orlando City SC's Duncan McGuire has spent the majority of his season on the mend, but got his shooting boots back for an important three points.

And Jack McGlynn continues to have a largely under-the-radar dominant season for the Houston Dynamo – despite the club's current struggles.

GOAL looks at the major takeaways from USMNT players in MLS.

    Freese-ing out Charlotte's attack

Has any USMNT star had their stock rise as much as Freese in 2025?

The NYCFC goalkeeper was an afterthought in the U.S.'s January camp, failing to get minutes behind the Columbus Crew's Patrick Schulte and the Colorado Rapids' Zack Steffen. Since then, it appears as if everything is going right for the former Harvard standout.

At the Gold Cup, he overtook longtime starter Matt Turner for the No. 1 spot and had several memorable performances. He resumed as the USMNT's starter for the September friendlies and could hold that role for the upcoming October matches. Last week, he landed a new contract with NYCFC, with the 27-year-old ensuring his future at the club for the next five years. Barring the unforeseen, he will be there for the opening of Etihad Park.

Freese brought all of that momentum to a critical match against Charlotte FC Saturday. The Crown came into the match having tied the MLS record for consecutive wins, having won nine straight. Led by an in-form Idan Toklomati and Wilfried Zaha, the team was punishing MLS defenses. But not against NYCFC and their star goalkeeper.

Freese led a stout defense that only allowed just six shots at Yankee Stadium – and the goalkeeper delivered two key saves for the home side. With the upset, NYCFC booked their trip to the postseason.

    McGlynn comes through, again

Where would the Houston Dynamo be without McGlynn?

Despite issues on both sides of the pitch, the Orange Crush remain in the thick of the playoff hunt, and that's largely due to their American talisman. McGlynn delivered once again for Ben Olsen's side, launching a pinpoint corner to the leaping head of Ezequiel Ponce to score the game's only goal against Portland, the No. 7 team in the Western Conference.

To be fair, McGlynn likely deserved more. He was impressive, delivering key passes, hitting three shots on target, and connecting on 87.5 percent of his passes. His assist brings his season tally to 14 goal contributions, with eight assists and six goals. To put that into perspective, Houston has 40 goals scored this season, meaning that McGlynn has directly contributed to 35 percent. No, it's not Messi, but its still very impressive.

Following the win, the Dynamo are just one point back from Texas rival FC Dallas for the final Western Conference spot, though Dallas have a game in hand. Houston are also just three back from the Colorado Rapids, and both teams have three games left in the season.

  • Imagn

Time to worry in Commerce City?

The Rapids have a U.S. international at goalkeeper in Steffen, two U.S. internationals in their backline in Sammy Vines and Reggie Cannon, a local homegrown star in Cole Bassett, a blockbuster signing in rising U.S. midfielder Paxten Aaronson, and arguably a top-five striker in Rafa Navarro.

Yet, this team hasn't worked effectively as a sum of its talented parts.

Colorado aren't expected to be on the same level as bigger spenders such as Inter Miami, LAFC, or Charlotte, but this team shouldn't be worrying about securing a trip to the postseason with just three matches left. This is the second-straight campaign in which Chris Armas' side is waning as opposed to storming at the end.

Against a FC Dallas team who were below the Rapids in the standings, the Burgundy Boys capitulated after equalizing in the 21st minute off a goal from Calvin Harris, losing 3-1 at Toyota Stadium. While Colorado remain two points ahead of Dallas in eighth, the Texas team has a game in hand and Houston are lurking.

After generating a lot of buzz for the signing of Aaronson, it appears as if Armas hasn't yet found an effective fit for his No. 10, as the former Frankfurt man struggled to have much of a playmaking impact Saturday. Since Aaronson joined the Rapids, outside of the win against Houston, the team has lost to three teams below them in the standings – the LA Galaxy, Sporting KC and FC Dallas.

Time is running out for Colorado to lock in a playoff spot. They face an uphill battle with Minnesota, Real Salt Lake, and LAFC in their final three matches. Despite the positive vibes Armas has brought, questions will be asked if his team fails to reach the postseason.

  • McGuire is back

It's been a rough road for Duncan McGuire since his failed move to Blackburn almost two years ago. While he signed a new contract with the club following the botched transfer, he's been in and out of the lineup for Oscar Pareja since. The striker was expected to get more playing time this season following some outbound transfers, but he had a left shoulder injury that sidelined him for almost four months.

After returning and working his way back into more minutes, McGuirre sent a timely reminder of his talent in a much-needed moment for his club. With Orlando trading blows with Nashville SC, the forward scored an impressive tap-in in front of the goal, courtesy of a well-made assist from Tyrese Spicer, to secure three points for the home side.

Sure, Spicer did the heavy lifting on the play, but McGuirre – working off months of rust – could have fluffed his lines. But he didn't, and Orlando are one step closer to sealing their fifth consecutive trip to the postseason as a result.

Another USMNT player, Alex Freeman, also featured 90 minutes in the win, connecting on one cross.

Ecclestone's all-round heroics stun RCB and Chinnaswamy in Super Over win

Ecclestone’s 33 off 19 helped UPW tie the scores by smashing 41 runs off the last 17 balls before delivering a stunning Super Over

Shashank Kishore24-Feb-2025
Super Over An extraordinary night of drama delivered a thriller, with UP Warriorz sending a crowd in excess of 28,000 into stunned silence after RCB failed to knock off the nine runs they needed in the Super Over.In a game that seemed to be headed RCB’s way until the last two overs in regulation time, Sophie Ecclestone’s incredible final-over hitting against Renuka Singh, which went for 17, forced the game into a Super Over. But the showstopper for the night was a sensational final over Ecclestone delivered to deny Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh as Warriorz sprung their campaign back to life with a second straight win.Related

The high-octane endForty-two needed off 18, with two wickets in hand. Ecclestone had pottered to 3 off eight balls, and had no option but to go for broke, especially with Chinelle Henry, seemingly the last hope for Warriorz, gone.Ecclestone got stuck into Georgia Wareham by muscling two sixes in a 13-run over. But when Saima Thakor was run out a ball after swinging one out of the ground in the 19th over, it was all on Ecclestone to knock off much of the 18 runs they needed off the last six.She hit 17 in an extraordinary sequence of 6, 6, 4, 1, taking Renuka to the cleaners as she repeatedly missed her lengths. But Ecclestone’s single off the fifth ball that left Warriorz needing one off the last ball, brought rookie Kranti Goud on strike. When Goud missed and the batters ran, Richa Ghosh did an MS Dhoni, choosing to sprint to the stumps and knock the bails off rather than risk an underarm throw. And just like that, the WPL had its first Super Over.Sophie Ecclestone’s sixes took the game into a Super Over•BCCIEcclestone’s dream night continuesWhen Kim Garth bowled Henry, who had muscled an incredible eight sixes in her 23-ball 62 against Delhi Capitals, with a slower delivery with Warriorz needing 47 off 22, she wouldn’t have envisaged having to bowl the Super Over.Yet, when she did, and conceded just 8 while dismissing Henry again, she wouldn’t have imagined finishing on the wrong side of the result. But, five minutes later, she watched in agony as Mandhana and Ghosh failed to find their hitting range on the face of some nerveless bowling from Ecclestone. It was a performance straight out of fantasy for the world’s No. 1 T20I and ODI bowler, who had also quite extraordinarily just conceded six runs off the final over in RCB’s innings. Three of those deliveries were pinpoint yorkers that denied Ellyse Perry a final charge towards what would have been an extraordinary century.Perry, Wyatt-Hodge set RCB upPerry offset Mandhana’s early loss – against offspin for the 11th time in the WPL – by welcoming Ecclestone with back-to-back fours, her step-out to bisect cover and mid-off being the standout. Perry’s intent-laden approach brought her a first six when she launched Thakor down the ground. At 42 for 1 at the end of the powerplay, RCB had a base. All through her innings, Perry was bubbling with flair. She became the first player to hit the 200-run mark in each of the first three WPLs. She also overtook Meg Lanning to become the highest run-getter in the tournament’s short history, during the course of a 94-run second-wicket stand with Danni Wyatt-Hodge.The five-over period between seven and 11 brought RCB just 33, but the pair was able to flick the switch. Goud, who hustled Wyatt-Hodge with an excellent bumper early on, was picked away for three back-to-back fours in the 13th.In doing so, Wyatt-Hodge exhibited her range of shots – a cut when offered width, a swat back past the bowler when it was dug in short, and a pummel over extra cover when the bowler went full. Wyatt-Hodge brought up her maiden WPL half-century off 36 balls against the side that had traded her out. But her dismissal brought Warriorz two more wickets – of Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja.Ellyse Perry brought out her glorious drives from the start•BCCIBut Perry didn’t pass up an opportunity to go all out in the death overs. She took a liking for Deepti Sharma’s predictable lengths and bowling into the surface by picking her for a sequence of 4, 6, 4, 2 in the penultimate over – hitting the ball to different areas, from deep cover to long-on to deep midwicket.Perry’s use of angles to try and get inside the line and sweep the bowlers off their lengths was particularly noteworthy. She finished unbeaten on 90 off 56, with RCB hitting 105 off the last nine overs.Navgire sparks life into chaseWith Chamari Athapaththu again on the bench, Warriorz needed some firepower up top, and when Kiran Navgire smashed a 27-ball 51 four nights ago against Capitals, it seemed like they had found an answer.Navgire tantalised yet again, her uncomplicated stand-and-deliver mantra bringing her 24 off just 12 balls, as she swung at anything remotely in her zone before she was bowled attempting to hoick Renuka. Vrinda Dinesh’s run of low scores stretched into a fourth game as she picked out mid-off for 14 as Warriorz lost two early.Warriorz rise after slideAn injury to Shreyanka Patil opened up a spot for Sneh Rana as a replacement, and she inflicted more agony for Warriorz when she struck twice in two overs. This put Warriorz in freefall mode, even though Shweta Sehrawat sparked life into the innings with a sprightly 31. But at 125 for 7 in 15, only a freak Henry innings would have silenced the crowd. But when she chopped on to Garth in the 17th, Warriorz needed a miracle, and Ecclestone scripted one.

Existem jogadores inegociáveis no São Paulo?

Peter Crouch crying laughing about what he's heard on 6 ft 6 Newcastle star

Former England striker Peter Crouch has spotted a striking similarity to his playing days after Newcastle sealed the signings of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle finally end striker saga

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has finally landed long-term target Wissa after losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool on a dramatic final day of the summer transfer window.

Brentford’s 28-year-old DR Congo international, who was born in France, has joined the Magpies for an undisclosed fee, which is understood could eventually amount to £55million, and will wear the club’s famous number nine shirt.

Wissa’s efforts to force his way out of Brentford have not differed too starkly from the tactics employed by Isak in engineering his move, but one way or the other that Magpies now have their new look strike partnership.

Indeed, his addition to an attacking pool already boosted by the signing of Germany international Nick Woltemade, who arrived at the weekend, gives Howe plenty of options for new systems and formations, though fans will have to endure an international break before they see their new faces in action.

“I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League,” Wissa said as he posed for pictures on Monday in Alan Shearer’s iconic number nine shirt.

“I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”

Woltemade and Wissa anointed the new Crouch and Defoe

Newcastle targeted Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike earlier in the summer and the plan was to use the Frenchman in a front two with Isak, but whether or not Howe is intent on doing the same with Woltemade and Wissa remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure though, the pair bring plenty of complementary traits to the table, with Woltemade’s massive 6 foot 6 frame sure to be a focal point for the likes of Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga to aim at, while Wissa’s industriousness and ability to be in the right place at the right time was evident in his partnerships with both Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney.

And Crouch, who formed an iconic partnership with Jermain Defoe, has reacted on X to the suggestion that the Newcastle pair could be the next generation’s little and large duo.

Standing at 6 foot 7, Crouch is slightly taller than the 6 foot 6 Woltemade, but like Crouch the Germany international is known for having the old cliche of ‘good feet for a big man’.

Wissa is two inches taller than the 5 foot 7 Defoe, but if he can replicate the goalscoring record of the former Tottenham and Sunderland legend, who is the tenth best Premier League goalscorer of all time with 156, there won’t be anyone on Tyneside complaining about his transfer fee.

Asensio 2.0: Aston Villa pushing to seal agreement for £20m "maverick"

It has been a dire start to the 2025/26 season for Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side have picked up a single point so far this term, and are yet to score a goal, three games into the new campaign. It is a worrying sign.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery watches on.

Of course, losing players like Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, who were both on loan for the second half of last season, has impacted them.

That is why, on transfer deadline day, the West Midlands side are pushing for a new attacker.

Aston Villa’s latest attacking target

With the transfer window set to slam shut at the earlier time of 7pm, it does not give Emery long to add an attacker to his squad.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that there are ongoing ‘negotiations’ for Villa to sign Manchester United star Jadon Sancho today, amid the prospect of Emi Martinez heading in the other direction.

Both clubs are attempting to secure an ‘agreement’ on those deals.

Romano explains that the England international ‘has to decide his future today’, and a move to Villa Park could offer a viable solution. A fee of £20m was quoted for the forward earlier in the window, and that could be a fee Villa need to pay themselves.

Why Sancho would be a good signing

Described as a “maverick” in his younger days by former coach Louis Lancaster, Sancho’s career trajectory has perhaps not gone as expected. His time at Old Trafford has been far from easy, although he did impress on loan at Chelsea last season.

At 25 years of age, Sancho has bags of Premier League experience now. He’s featured 89 times in the English top flight for the Red Devils and Enzo Maresca’s Blues, with 12 goals and 11 assists coming in that time.

Of course, the London-born star became known thanks to his sensational time at Borussia Dortmund. Over two spells in Germany, Sancho played 158 games, scoring 53 times and assisting 67, helping win the DFB-Pokal in 2020/21.

Well, this would be a move similar to one Villa made in January, when they brought Asensio in on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Real Madrid star enjoyed a successful loan spell at Villa Park for the second half of last season, where he was able to get his career back on track after falling out of favour in the French capital.

Marco Asensio & Marcus Rashford for Aston Villa

Asensio only played 21 times for the club, but had a huge impact on Emery’s attack. He was deadly in front of goal, bagging eight times, and chipped in with an assist, too.

It is easy to see why Sancho could be the second coming of Asensio at Villa Park. Both players have somehow seen their careers take a bit of a downward spiral, falling out of favour at their respective clubs.

Yet, with the Spaniard able to play regular first-team football and become a key player for Villa, he bolstered his stock once more. It is easy to see how Sancho could do the same.

Their numbers from last season are similar, too. For example, Sancho averaged 1.94 key passes and 2.3 take-ons completed per 90 minutes.

In comparison, Asensio notched up an average of 2.12 key passes and 1.06 completed take-ons each game.

Sancho could certainly become Villa’s new Asensio and really get his career back on track at Villa Park. He is clearly a talented attacker who could thrive in the pockets for Emery and help revitalise a struggling Villa attack, which is missing Asensio’s impact.
