Kenan Yildiz compared to Lamine Yamal and Michael Laudrup as ex-Juventus, Inter & AC Milan star sees 'a fire inside' young forward

Turkish forward Kenan Yildiz has drawn comparisons to Barcelona star Lamine Yamal amid his standout performances for Juventus.

Juventus wonderkid Yildiz has been lauded by former Italy, Juventus and Inter striker Aldo Serena, who compared the Turkish forward's playing style to that of Danish great Michael Laudrup. In an interview with Italian media outlet , Serena praised the 20-year-old's on-field mentality and unique technical ability, while downplaying recent comparisons to Barcelona's Yamal.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The high praise comes as Yildiz enters what is expected to be a crucial third season in Turin. Having broken into the first team, the forward is now tasked with confirming his status as one of Europe's top young talents. Serena believes Yildiz has the perfect mentality to succeed, noting a contrast between his polite off-field demeanour and his aggressive, hungry attitude during matches.

WHAT SERENA SAID

Speaking on Yildiz's mentality, Serena said: "One thing more than anything else: he appears very kind, composed, and polite. But in his case, that's not at all misleading: the fact that he's so measured in his behavior doesn't make him soft, on the contrary. On the pitch, he's someone who knows how to command respect. He has a fire inside him that he fuels day after day on the pitch: I'm struck by his hunger, his desire to progress."

On the Lamine Yamal comparison, he said: "It's probably an exaggerated comparison. But not because Kenan lacks anything. They have similar characteristics, yes, but Yildiz is unique. He has everything, he has a recognizable way of playing. He doesn't have to chase anyone to demonstrate how much he can shift the balance of power. In general, a comparison like that to Yamal doesn't do him any good , because he lacks nothing to be a world-class player.

"When I see him play, I immediately think of Laudrup . The way he curves, the way he brakes with the ball at his feet, and the way he counters. But Laudrup, who was a sublime player, reveled in dribbling. Too much, exaggerating certain plays that then prevented him from being effective in front of goal. Yildiz, on the other hand, wants to shoot more. He tries to convert the fruit of his technique; he has a different nastiness."

After providing two assists in Juventus' opening Serie A match against Parma, Yildiz will be looking to cement his place as a key attacker for the club this season. SITUAÇÃO DO FLAMENGO

SITUAÇÃO DO FLUMINENSE

Alexander Isak and big-spending Liverpool crown an epic summer for the Premier League: Winners and losers from the 2025 transfer window

Some players went to extreme measures to force through moves while others got no reward for behaving impeccably

The 2025 summer transfer window has just slammed shut in England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France – and a crazy couple of months was capped by a suitably insane deadline day that saw Liverpool sign Alexander Isak for a British-record fee while the Reds' deal for Marc Guehi collapsed at the 11th hour.

Newcastle also finally managed to convince Brentford to part company with Yoane Wissa, Nicolas Jackson's on-off switch to Bayern Munich eventually went through, while both Manchester United and Manchester City brought in new goalkeepers. Overall, though, there were very few major deals in Europe's other 'Big Five' leagues, which only served to highlight just how powerful the Premier League has become thanks to its global popularity and massive TV rights deals.

So, who were the big winners and losers of the window? Which sides are now perfectly placed to challenge for major honours this season? And which players have been left lamenting the collapse of badly-needed moves? GOAL breaks it all down below…

  • Getty Images Sport

    WINNER: FSG

This time last year, Liverpool fans were once again cursing the club's owners for their perceived parsimony, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) having provided new coach Arne Slot with just one new player in Federico Chiesa. Now, though, John Henry & Co. are being lauded for their foresight, as last summer's prudence paved the way for a club-record spending spree that has rocked English football to its very core.

There are, of course, no guarantees that every single signing will work out, while missing out on Guehi was undoubtedly a blow. However, the #FSGOUT brigade have been stunned into silence – because Liverpool didn't just spend big, they also sold brilliantly too, recouping almost half of their record-breaking outlay through outgoings, meaning they have zero PSR problems.

Basically, Liverpool are the best team in the Premier League right now – and also arguably its most well-run club.

    LOSER: Bayer Leverkusen

This was always going to be a trying summer for Bayer Leverkusen. It was inevitable that several members of Xabi Alonso's 2023-24 domestic double winners would follow the Spaniard out of the door at the Bay Arena. However, nobody could have envisaged just how traumatic the transition would prove to be.

Leverkusen have already sacked Alonso's successor, Erik ten Hag – and after just two Bundesliga games – while Piero Hincapie and Victor Boniface joined Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Granit Xhaka in becoming the latest big names to depart when they joined Arsenal and Werder Bremen, respectively, on deadline day.

Poor Jarell Quansah must be wondering what he's let himself in for by leaving Premier League champions Liverpool for Europe's newest crisis club!

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Striking strikers

Isak and Wissa were widely castigated for their refusal to play for Newcastle and Brentford, respectively, in order to force through transfers. Guehi, by complete contrast, was championed as a model of professionalism throughout his own transfer saga.

However, whereas Isak and Wissa secured their dream moves, Guehi is still at Crystal Palace, who pulled the plug on his transfer to Liverpool at the 11th hour.  One cannot help but fear, then, that a worrying precedent has been set this summer because the rather sad moral of these three stories is that striking works.

    LOSER: England's middle class

The rise of the Premier League's 'middle class' was one of the stories of last season. As Pep Guardiola repeatedly pointed out, it had become more difficult than ever for the biggest clubs to beat brilliantly-coached teams like Brentford and Bournemouth.

However, it's been a brutal window for the over-achievers. Brentford lost their manager and two best forwards, while Bournemouth's defence was dismantled.

Furthermore, Aston Villa's hopes of building on their remarkable recent progress under Unai Emery have been dashed by their failure to qualify for the Champions League, resulting in the Birmingham-based outfit having to rely on the loan market to bring in new players. Newcastle, meanwhile, were made painfully aware of their place in the pecking order by Isak – and the plethora of players that rejected a move to St. James' Park.

With the Premier League's elite having flexed their financial muscles during the summer, it appears as if we might see a re-establishment of the old order this season – which will doubtless spark further debates about the systemic financial inequality in England.

Revealed: Why Cristiano Ronaldo was rejected by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund as ex-Man Utd star asked for Europe stay ahead of Al-Nassr move

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both turned down the chance to sign Cristiano Ronaldo before the Portuguese icon ended up at Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo’s agent Mendes offered him to Bayern and DortmundKahn confirmed Die Roten held talks over a potential dealPortuguese superstar eventually joined Al-NassrFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After seeing his Manchester United contract terminated following a dispute with the club, Ronaldo dreamed of continuing his career in Europe and approached both Bayern and Dortmund in 2022. According to Christian Falk’s book , published by , Mendes actively pitched the Portuguese star to Bayern chiefs, preparing a special dossier that highlighted the marketing, merchandising and global reach CR7 would bring. Oliver Kahn, Bayern CEO at the time, later admitted the discussions took place, while BVB also received the same pitch. Both German clubs, however, decided against making a move despite Ronaldo’s availability.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The 40-year-old's pursuit of a European stay coincided with a turbulent spell at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag. The Bavarians seriously considered signing him, but concerns quickly emerged as club chiefs feared the Portuguese forward’s superstar status could have a negative effect on the dressing room and damage the wage hierarchy. Robert Lewandowski was Bayern’s top earner on €24 million (£20m/$26m) a year, while the ex-Real Madrid star was pocketing around €29m (£24m/$32m) at United and reportedly wanted a similar figure.

Dortmund reached the same conclusion, deciding that the commercial boost Mendes promised was outweighed by the sporting and financial risks. The stance from both clubs underlined how Europe’s elite were unwilling to compromise team spirit and long-term balance for short-term global headlines.

AFPWHAT JORGE MENDES SAID?

Mendes reportedly told Bayern: "It would be a dream for Ronaldo to continue his career at FC Bayern.” Despite this, Kahn and ex-sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic concluded that Ronaldo simply didn’t fit Bayern’s philosophy.

"We came to the conclusion that, despite all the appreciation we all have, he wouldn't have fit in with our philosophy in the current situation." Dortmund, meanwhile, rejected Mendes’ projections outright, dismissing his claims of financial upside.

‘Little mistakes’ – Leny Yoro reveals why Manchester United are struggling and insists squad ‘needs to stay together’ after Grimsby defeat

Leny Yoro has rallied his Manchester United team-mates to "stick together" after a disastrous start to the season.

Yoro opens up on dressing room atmosphereUrges everyone to avoid making mistakesIssues rallying cry to his Man Utd team-matesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Yoro believes United will get things back on track if the team can avoid "little mistakes" but insists they "need to stay together no matter what" in order to break the shackles. The start to the season has been less than ideal for Ruben Amorim's side as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round after a penalty shootout defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Yoro has been one of the few promising signings by United in recent memory, with the 19-year-old cementing his place in defence after arriving from Lille last summer. However, the fact that he is yet to start in a victory over a current top-flight club in the Premier League is a damning indictment of the dire straits the Red Devils find themselves in. United are winless after their opening two league fixtures and the defeat against fourth-tier side Grimsby Town will have been a hard pill to swallow. The Premier League's sleeping giants are under immense scrutiny, as reports claim Amorim could resign from the role of head coach if he fails to turn the tide and steady the ship.

WHAT YORO SAID

Speaking to , Yoro said: "I think it's been difficult for everyone. This game is in the past now and we need to move forward and think about Burnley. The team is ready to hold their heads up and we're looking forward to the game.

"It's difficult because I think without the Grimsby game – against Fulham and Arsenal I think we were a bit unlucky in these games because we did well, honestly. We had the opportunity to score and we conceded goals we can avoid – I think these are the small things we need to improve. If we don't concede these little mistakes, we will win games – it's just little mistakes we need to change.

"Once we enter Carrington, we focus on ourselves and the spirit of the team. The team spirit is really important for our team and we saw in pre-season when we were always together – we built a spirit. This type of game [Grimsby] helps also to have a good spirit because we need to stay together no matter what the result is. We need to reflect this on the pitch and try to do everything to do it."

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Dalot has revealed a frank assessment of his team's dire performance against League Two side Grimsby, who dumped United out of the Carabao Cup on penalties. While showing deference to the Mariners, Dalot believes United squandered an opportunity to prove their doubters wrong by allowing the hosts to win too many key battles during the clash at Blundell Park.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dalot's words reveal how much pressure United are under already after just three matches of the season. Following last term's woeful 15th-place finish in the league and a summer of high-profile new signings it had been expected that United would start strongly, but that has not been the case. The spotlight is firmly on boss Ruben Amorim and his ability to turn things round.

  • WHAT DALOT SAID

Dalot said: "I think we gave the game to them, clearly, straight away, exactly what they wanted. Win duels, second balls, set plays. We fought back, but I think that was the minimum that we could show to the fans that travelled for ourselves, for the club, but clearly not good enough. I don't want to go through the same sentence time and again. We just have to show (that) and we just lost one opportunity today to show that we deserve to be here."

United performed well in the season curtain-raiser with Arsenal and, despite that defeat, the signs looked positive. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pedro’s arrival at Chelsea came after he turned down a move to Newcastle, who had lodged a £50m bid with Brighton earlier in the summer. While the Magpies hoped to pair him with Alexander Isak, the striker instead opted for London and Stamford Bridge. Chelsea eventually wrapped up the deal for £55 million ($74m), rising to £60 million ($80.6m) with add-ons.

Speaking to The Evening Standard, Pedro said: “It would be a dream one day to win the Ballon d’Or. I believe in myself. Everything is possible. Maybe it can happen. Big clubs from England have brought the top strikers from Europe this summer. It will be interesting to compete with them for the Golden Boot.”

The Brazilian also explained why he rejected Newcastle, albeit without directly naming them as potential suitors: “When I was in Brighton, I was missing London a little bit. Lahore Qalandars' reboot dented by Lynn injury

For a team that has finished last both seasons, will the 2018 edition bring a welcome change to one of the most high-profile franchises in the PSL?

Danyal Rasool20-Feb-2018

History

The first time could be dismissed as an accident, and Lahore Qalandars could argue that there was a steep learning curve to the art of mastering success in a T20 league. The 2017 season however, still showed Lahore panting at the wrong end of the curve, their race run before the knockout stages began. Simply put, the PSL, in its first two years, could not have gone worse for arguably the PSL’s most high-profile team. They have finished fifth – that’s last – in both seasons. In a particularly forgiving format where four teams reach the next round, Lahore Qalandars’ fans are the only ones not to have tasted knockout excitement. The first season was simply a write-off, a wretched year in which they lost six games – five by wide margins – and thus never really got off the bottom. The second season had a much more vibrant buzz about it with T20 royalty in Brendon McCullum taking over as captain. They looked an improved side, but in the end still finished with only three wins in eight games. They missed out on the next round in heart-breaking style, with arch-rivals Karachi Kings knocking them out in a virtual playoff, with the Kings’ Kieron Pollard smashing 10 off the last two balls to take his side through instead.

Lahore Qalandars squad

Full squad: Brendon McCullum (capt), Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn, Mustafizur Rahman, Umar Akmal, Anton Devcich, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Fakhar Zaman, Yasir Shah, Cameron Delport, Aamer Yamin, Bilawal Bhatti, Sohail Khan, Bilal Asif, Raza Hasan, Sohail Akhtar, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Ghulam Mudassar, Mitchell McClenaghan, Gulraiz Sadaf, Imran Khan Jr, Salman Irshad
Likely XI: Brendon McCullum (capt), Chris Lynn/Cameron Delport, Sunil Narine, Fakhar Zaman, Umar Akmal, Sohail Akhtar, Aamer Yamin, Sohail Khan, Yasir Shah, Mustafizur Rahman, Shaheen Shah Afridi
Support staff: Aqib Javed (head coach), Kabir Khan (assistant coach), Atiq-uz-Zaman (fielding coach) Kyle Mills (bowling coach), Sameen Rana (team manager), Richard Stonier (fitness manager)

Team overview

After the first season, Qalandars overhauled their entire squad, a blatant acknowledgment that they had got it wrong at the draft. This year, the have retained the core last year’s team, and there seems to be a sense that with a bit more luck, they would have had more success last season. They have stuck by Brendon McCullum as captain, and also retained two more of their key foreign players in Sunil Narine and Cameron Delport, as well as locals Umar Akmal and Fakhar Zaman.Jason Roy has been released to make room for Chris Lynn, and if he does play, Qalandars’ opening pair will unquestionably be the
most explosive, at least on paper. Mustafizur Rahman, though only partially available, will add further specialist T20 knowhow to the squad.

Strengths

Lahore Qalandars are the Real Madrid of cricket; they don’t do subtlety. Part of their strength – or so they’d hope – lies in the sheer glitz and glamour of their team sheet, with more and more “Galacticos” added each season. Lynn and Mustafizur are the freshest hot prospects this year, although the Australian suffered a shoulder injury* and is a potential doubt for the entire tournament. It still has to be said their squad looks far better balanced, both in terms of experience and youth, as well as explosiveness and maturity. McCullum is still one of T20 cricket’s most sought-after names and an exceptionally intelligent captain. For big hitting, they have Fakhar Zaman, and Anton Devcich – who was the Super Smash’s highest run-scorer this year at a strike rate above 168.In addition, two of the handiest T20 spinners will be wearing the green of Qalandars this year. Yasir Shah, becoming a better bowler all the time, and Narine, the Qalandars highest wicket=taker with an economy rate of 6.46 last season, are expected to be central to their side’s prospects. Mustafizur and Mitchell McClenaghan are shrewd T20 specialists, while the retention of Sohail Khan and Bilawal Bhatti means Qalandars won’t be short of local fast-bowling talent to adorn their team sheet.Brendon McCullum creams the ball towards the off side•Getty Images

Weaknesses

The blinding shock and awe of the big names does a fairly cunning job of concealing holes in the Qalandars squad, of which unmistakeably there are some. McCullum, Zaman, Lynn and Devcich don’t exactly do safety first, and the names on there to steady the ship should early wickets fall do not convince. Umar Akmal’s stock has, you might have noticed, dropped sharply over the past year, with his chart-topping heroics of two years ago a decidedly distant memory. Denesh Ramdin has a T20I average of 16 at a strike rate of 115, and Qalandars would be on shaky ground if he was called upon to perform rescue acts too often. Besides those, there isn’t much local batting heft to cushion the blow of a poor start, and the Qalandars will be relying heavily on their top order to repay the faith they placed in them at the draft. As far as the bowling goes, the fast bowling appear slightly unremarkable. Mustafizur won’t be able for the whole season, while McClenaghan had a rather underwhelming Big Bash League, and could be short on form and confidence.Aamer Yamin, Bilawal and Sohail can all be handy in their own way, but they don’t nearly possess the qualities some of their teammates do, and for a country spoilt on freakishly talented fast bowlers, Qalandars’ fast bowling department is unlikely to get the blood pumping.

Key foreign player

Despite the presence of new superstars in the squad, this segment simply has to go to McCullum for the second successive year. Not so much because he’s his side’s best player necessarily. It’s simply that there simply isn’t another player whose performance will go as far to determine how successful their side is. McCullum at his best is a juggernaut, an unparalleled batsman, a peerless fielder, an unsurpassed captain and a superlative team motivator. However, that is a big if nowadays. There are signs that the 36-year old is coming precipitously close to the end, and a distinctly average BBL – at least by his standards – only fanned the flames of that opinion. He scored 248 runs at 24.8 and a strike rate of 135, scoring 5 or fewer in
four of ten games as his side finished second bottom. His performance at the PSL last year, too, was poor, with just 93 runs at 13.28. Lahore Qalandars will be hoping he can turn it around for what could be one last hurrah, because if he does, it’ll be the other side of the table Qalandars will be focused on.

Under the radar

It is unusual to include a former international on this list, but then again, 25-year old Raza Hasan, who has played an ODI and 10 T20Is, has had anything but a usual career. Thrown into the international side at 20, he made his debut against Australia in Dubai, registering figures of 2-15 in four overs in a humbling defeat for the Australians, who were bowled out for 89. He later went to the World T20I, where he similarly impressed, and gushing reviews claimed he had the world at his feet. However, all those hopes and promises unravelled in sad circumstances. He fell down the pecking order and struggled to keep up his form and fitness, with the nadir being a two-year ban in 2015 for testing positive for cocaine. He was spotted again by Aaqib Javed last year, who said he was struggling to even gain entry to the Gaddafi Stadium and was reduced to playing on the streets. Aaqib promised to get his career back on track, and drafted him into Qalandars squad. Who could begrudge him a successful second innings?*
