Per , Liverpool are ready to reignite their interest in Barcola, who is a long-term target, as they continue to face difficulties in their pursuit of Isak. Their bid for the Newcastle star has been rejected, and both the PSG star and Real Madrid's Rodrygo are seen as potential alternatives.

Liverpool have already spent almost £300 million ($400m) this summer, as they have signed Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. A deal to land Barcola would reportedly cost around €100m (£133.5m) in addition to what has already gone out of the Reds' account, but the Anfield club is supposedly ready to make a bid. Arne Slot is keen to add another player to his frontline, although the Frenchman operates more as a winger than as a No.9, where Isak thrives.

DID YOU KNOW?

Barcola enjoyed an exceptional season in 2024-25 as PSG won the Champions League and Ligue 1, providing 21 goals and 19 assists in all competitions, although he has slipped down the pecking order at Parc des Princes. He operates primarily off the left flank, and signing the winger could allow Liverpool to use Ekitike as a No.9. However, report he is currently more likely to stay in the French capital.

Liverpool will hope to clarify their top target soon, given their ongoing pursuit of Isak. Despite their incredible spending, it feels unlikely they will sign both the winger and Isak, after all.

Spin-heavy SL confident of success at T20 World Cup

While the ongoing IPL may be a certifiable run-fest, the current school of thought surrounding the upcoming T20 World Cup is that conditions in the USA and Caribbean might be a little less batter-friendly. At least, that’s the working assumption Sri Lanka’s selectors were going on when they named their 15-man squad for the tournament.”If you look at the conditions in America and the West Indies, most of it is pointing towards the wickets there being quite slow,” chief selector Upul Tharanga said at a media briefing on Monday.”The Major League tournament was played in Dallas with drop-in pitches. If you look at those, even though they’re being brought down from Australia they are still quite uneven and a little slow. This could of course change, so it’s a little hard to predict.”Related

  • Uncapped Dunith Wellalage in Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup squad

  • Sri Lanka Cricket awards central contracts to 41 male players

It’s this line of thinking that has seen them stock their squad with spin-bowling options. While Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana will lead the line, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Dunith Wellalage all offer all-round options, while Vijayakanth Viyaskanth is among the travelling reserves.

Dhananjaya, Wellalage show versatility is key

Among the main beneficiaries of Sri Lanka’s focus on spin have been Dhananjaya and Wellalage.A lack of power-hitting pedigree has seen the 32-year-old Dhananjaya struggle to become a mainstay of the T20 side, while his position in the batting line-up has also yo-yoed. Over the past four years, he’s batted in each of the top seven positions, though primarily in the middle order, and of Sri Lanka’s nine T20Is this year he’s only played in four of them. As for Wellalage, he is yet to debut for Sri Lanka in T20Is, though he has 21 ODIs and a solitary Test to his name. But despite this lack of game time, both have been included in Sri Lanka’s squad, and Tharanga explained that it was their versatility that cemented their inclusion.”There could be a chance that we play three spinners sometimes. Looking at that is why we picked Dunith, particularly his batting, because sometimes we could go with him ahead of a fast-bowling allrounder.”As for Dhananjaya, we value his bowling. And with regard to power-hitting, we think we can get that from elsewhere in the side. In terms of his all-round input, and taking into consideration the conditions, he was a better option.”Tharanga also revealed that the uncapped Viyaskanth, who had impressed in the LPL in recent seasons as well as the ILT20 earlier this year, had been picked as a travelling reserve ahead of the likes of Jeffrey Vandersay and Akila Dananjaya owing to him being more suited to the conditions.”Viyaskanth is taller and has a higher arm action, and because of that we thought he would suit the West Indian conditions better. Along with Viyaskanth, we looked at Akila Dananjaya and Jeffrey Vandersay, and compared to them Viyaskanth has bowled more in franchise cricket, and so we think he’s best suited to fill in in the case of any injury.”Matheesha Pathirana has been in sensational form for CSK, but Sri Lanka will have to wait on a final medical report before they can clear him for return•BCCI

Concerns over power-hitting?

The build-up to the World Cup – in the shadow of the IPL – has brought with it a certain degree of uncertainty over what the scoring will be like at the tournament, with ground averages perhaps no longer a reliable indicator of scoring patterns considering the kind of uber aggressive batting seen in the IPL so far.In this vein, there were questions over the selection of Dhananjaya over more explosive options like Kusal Janith Perera and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (travelling reserve). The selectors, though, were confident that the team selected has the firepower needed to go deep in the tournament.”If you look at scores in the West Indies historically, as well as the US, average scores are around 160. But until we play on them we won’t know how such wickets behave. But I do believe that this a team capable of meeting any challenge.”Speaking further on Perera’s axing, Tharanga said it was down to his recent lack of form, while he added that Bhanuka had been kept as a reserve as there were enough power hitters in the side already.”From the 15 players we’ve selected I think we have the necessary power in the side in terms of batters. In the opening slots we have Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, then we have Kamindu Mendis, Charith [Asalanka], there’s Wanindu and Dasun Shanaka. So we have faith that we can cover the power side of the game with those players.”

Special request for Liyanage

Janith Liyanage was not part of the initial 25-man shortlist the selectors had identified as potential candidates for their final squad, but such has been the strength of his performances in ODIs – he has scored three fifties and a century in six innings since debuting in March of this year – they had been urged to reconsider his role in shortest format. As such, Liyanage, despite having played the last of his three T20Is back in February 2022, has been named one for four travelling reserves.”He wasn’t selected in the initial 25-man list because we thought we could go forward with those selections. But in the games following that decision, Janith performed very well,” Tharanga explained.”This meant that some of the seniors and coaches in the side asked again if it was possible to take Janith for the tournament.”

Sri Lanka wait on Pathirana injury

Matheesha Pathirana had impressed in his second IPL campaign, picking up 13 wickets for Chennai Super Kings in six games before being sidelined with a hamstring strain. According to Tharanga, they are hopeful of the slinger being fit for the start of the tournament but will have to wait on the final medical report before identifying a clear timeline for his return. He is one of five seamers Sri Lanka will be taking to the US, alongside fellow slinger Nuwan Thushara, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera and travelling reserve Asitha Fernando. In those, Tharanga believes there is enough to trouble opposition batters in all phases of play.”We have players to bowl at the death, but it’s in the powerplay that we need to focus on picking up wickets. So for that we have Madushanka and then as travelling reserve we have Asitha.”If we take our side, Thushara, Pathirana they can bowl in the death overs. But we needed someone that could come in if we needed a wicket-taking option with the new ball, which is why we went with Asitha [as a reserve over Binura Fernando].”

– brincou o cantor.

Dinamite vestia o uniforme do Vasco.

Heather Knight challenges England's batters to adapt aggression to 50-over format

Sciver-Brunt won’t bowl in Derby, so team balance in spotlight for opening ODI

Heather Knight says that England will not deviate from the positive batting approach that helped to deliver a 3-0 clean sweep in the T20I series against Pakistan, but has challenged her players to adapt to the more varied rhythms of the 50-over format when they take the field for Friday’s first ODI against the same opponents in Derby.Knight’s 49 from 44 balls at Edgbaston last week was instrumental in rescuing her team from an ignominious 11 for 4 in the first T20I, but she said she took huge confidence from the varied manner in which England posted competitive totals in each match. A series of cameos delivered a 65-run victory at Northampton before Danni Wyatt’s 48-ball 87 set up a series-best total of 176 at Headingley.”They were three quite different innings, weren’t they?” Knight said on the eve of the ODIs. “The fact that we posted pretty good totals each time was a really pleasing thing. Knowing different ways to punch out a score is really important. That’s a good sign, and I think it’s a real strength of ours, that depth we have in our batting.”In particular, she credited the manner in which the team came to terms with the slower pace of Pakistan’s bowlers, whose nagging accuracy allied to some slow surfaces made it hard for England’s batters to line them up. With the T20 World Cup coming up in Bangladesh, Knight said it was all valuable experience for the team to have been able to bank.”The response from the top-order from that first game was really good, they worked out a little bit more about how they were going to be aggressive,” she said. “I feel like it’s a really good learning for us about how we’re going to approach those bowlers on potentially slower wickets, because you have to work out the method that you’re going to do it, and that’ll be slightly different for every player.”As a team, we always want to be positive,” she added. “Our aim as batters is to be aggressive when we can, but in ODI cricket, you have a little bit more time to read situations and cope with the ebbs and flows of the games. There’s obviously a lot of space to be aggressive, and that’s really important, but you’ve got to do it for longer and be a bit more calculated in terms of the times you pick to be aggressive and the times that you might have to soak up a little bit of pressure. But I’m really excited to see how we go.”One player who is well attuned to the ODI tempo is Tammy Beaumont, back in the squad after watching the T20Is from the Sky Sports commentary pod, and likely to open alongside Maia Bouchier with Wyatt slipping into the middle order. Kate Cross is also included in the 50-over squad, and can expect a key role as a senior seamer, especially with Nat Sciver-Brunt unavailable as a bowler for the first match and likely to have a limited workload thereafter, as she recovers from a long-term knee issue.Related

“I feel like Maia’s earned that place in the T20 side and deserves a little bit of a run after the way she performed in New Zealand,” Knight said. “But in terms of ODIs, Tammy’s one of the best openers we’ve ever had, so we’re really pleased to have her back, and I know she’s eager to still keep improving and still keep getting better, which is a really good sign for a player of her stature.”With Sophia Dunkley on the sidelines at present, but making a strong case for a recall with her form for South East Stars, Knight acknowledged there was “a huge amount of competition” at the top of England’s batting, which is “only going to keep pushing those individuals to keep getting better”.She recognised, however, that the switch to the ODI format could come with challenges, particularly for the younger players in England’s line-up who – given the global focus on T20 cricket – are becomingly increasingly unfamiliar with the flow of 50-over cricket. In particular, she cited Alice Capsey who, at the age of 19, has played 129 T20 matches for club and country but just 31 List A games, of which 12 have been for England.Capsey has endured a tricky run of form of late, with just one score above 25 since March – and even that innings, 31 in the second T20I, was a streaky affair containing five boundaries in one over and little else for the rest of her 33-ball innings. Nevertheless, she claimed the Player of the Match award after picking up two important wickets with her offspin, and Knight said that her ambitions to become a genuine allrounder could only heighten her value to the team.”It just shows the contrast of the amount of T20 cricket that young players are playing, as opposed to one-day cricket now,” Knight said. “Alice is still working out the tempo that she wants to go at. She’s had success in dominating the powerplay and she plays that role well in franchise leagues around the world, but it’s about expanding her game, and learning to adapt to different situations. She’s still only 19, so that’ll come with time and volume of cricket played.”Alice does want to become a genuine allrounder. She’s working really hard on her offspin, so that gives her another option – not just in the top six batters, she could potentially play as an allrounder at seven and look to be in a place where she can perform consistently in that one-day team.”One further dilemma for Knight could be the balance of her spin attack. All three of Sophie Ecclestone, Charlie Dean and Sarah Glenn are now fixtures in the T20I side, and each currently occupies a top five slot in the ICC rankings. But with the potential need to play another seamer, while still maintaining the depth of England’s batting, one of the trio could be required to sit out.”There’s obviously a slightly different balance with Nat not bowling,” Knight said. “Our three spinners have been a huge strength of ours, and it can be really hard to fit them in the one-day team. It’s something that we haven’t really done, but it’s so hard to leave one of them out there.”They all add different things: Sarah’s consistency, Charlie’s got the best strike-rate of all time at the moment in one-day cricket, and Soph’s the best in the world. We’re looking at how we squeeze them in, but also get the balance right in terms of having enough batting.”Although England’s primary focus is the T20 World Cup in October, Knight was mindful of the fact that the ODI version is looming in 2025 as well. That, however, is a challenge for another day.”The international schedule is such that there’s always a big tournament on the horizon not too far away,” she said. “For me, it’s about improving as a team, be it in the T20 format or the one-day format, and each player should be pretty clear on what exactly it is that they need to be better at.”I want us to focus on what we’re doing now. What we’re facing is Pakistan. We’re trying to do the best that we can against them, and ultimately win the series and win it ruthlessly.”

Handscomb shared stands of 64 with Rehan Ahmed and 82 with Tom Scriven – the latter partnership for the ninth wicket.Middlesex, guilty of dropping both Handscomb on 48 and Rehan on 18, employed some bizarre fields over the course of the day, conceding a plethora of runs to a too often vacant third area. However, there were some inspired bowling changes with wickets falling in the first over of a bowler’s spell on three separate occasions. Ethan Bamber proved the pick of the Middlesex attack with 4 for 68.The hosts, left 18 overs to bat and closed 64 for 1, Mark Stoneman the wicket to fall.Another quirk of an interesting day meant Middlesex were onto their fourth ball before 36 overs were completed, the previous three having gone out of shape. After an opening day lost entirely to rain it came as little surprise, despite bright overhead conditions, that home skipper Toby Roland-Jones opted to bowl first on winning the toss, yet Leicestershire made a fast start with 27 coming off the first four overs. The first change of ball in only the fifth over brought a breakthrough when Bamber swung one into Rishi Patel which straightened off the pitch and crashed into his off stump.Marcus Harris, who’d already edged two through the slips in a skittish effort, soon followed, pinned lbw in Bamber’s next over and when Lewis Hill edged Ryan Higgins’ third ball to slip the Foxes were 50 for 3.Louis Kimber threatened briefly before lazily hooking Henry Brookes’ fourth ball of the day down the throat of deep square to leave Leicestershire in some trouble.Handscomb though had begun positively, despatching a Roland-Jones half-volley to the fence and with Rehan for company they reached lunch without further loss. The spinner was given a life soon after the resumption when Stephen Eskinazi dropped a regulation catch at slip – Bamber the luckless bowler. The reprieve seemed to liberate the all-rounder who twice lifted Bamber over mid-wicket for four before the seamer held a caught and bowled to finally get his man.A trio of Bens, Cox, Mike, and Green didn’t detain us for long and at 208 for 8 the hosts must have thought they were through. However, Handscomb, dropped on 48 by Roland-Jones – a tough return caught and bowled – found an ally in Scriven who played with enterprise to strike four boundaries. It meant Handscomb, who drove and deflected the ball well throughout the day, was only three short of a century and Leicestershire within 10 of a second batting bonus point when Scriven smeared a mishit to Max Holden at midwicket to fall four short of a sixth first-class 50.Handscomb though would reach his landmark with the help of nine fours and add one more boundary before being last out, giving Bamber a fourth victim.Stoneman fell early in Middlesex reply, bowled around his legs by Mike, but Sam Robson, playing for the first time since injuring his thumb in the opening game of the season against Glamorgan, and the in-form Holden batted through to stumps without undue alarm. Before play began, a poignant minute’s silence was observed in memory of Worcestershire spinner Josh Baker, who tragically passed away earlier this week, aged just 20.

Lyndon James 92*, Hampshire drops help resurrect Notts

Allrounder Lyndon James finished on 92 not out after leading a Nottinghamshire recovery from 50 for 6 as they closed on 212 for 9 on day one of their Vitality County Championship match against Hampshire at Trent BridgeMohammad Abbas, who took 15 wickets in the two matches between these counties last season, was the scourge of Nottinghamshire again with 4 for 36 – but Hampshire may yet rue their dropped catches as they look for a first win of their Division One campaign.James, eight away from a first hundred since September 2022, was dropped on 23 and 32 as Hampshire’s slip fielders suffered a day of contrasting fortunes, holding all three chances offered in the morning session but putting down three in the afternoon and another after tea.Hampshire have an excellent record against Nottinghamshire, winning eight of their last 11 matches, including both of last year’s encounters.Nottinghamshire, who fielded the same XI that beat Lancashire to break their duck for the season last week, found themselves two down before they had scored a run as Abbas struck in the second and third overs of a new-ball spell in which he did not concede a run until his 35th delivery.Abbas, who was missing last week due to illness, had Ben Slater caught behind with a ball that nipped away late and dismissed Will Young with one that squared up the New Zealander and took the shoulder of the bat, looping to backward point. The Pakistan international took a breather after only six overs but there was scant respite for the home side, who were 17 for 3 when Joe Clarke edged to third slip off Kyle Abbott and 37 for 4 when left-armer Keith Barker – making his first appearance of the season – found some extra bounce from the Stuart Broad End and had Haseeb Hameed caught behind, a first dismissal in four innings for the Nottinghamshire captain. On a green-tinged pitch of somewhat mottled appearance, Hampshire’s decision to bowl first on winning the toss looked the right one.James Fuller got in on the act by uprooting Tom Moores’s leg stump with a big inswinger before Abbas returned to grab a third scalp as Jack Haynes slashed at a ball outside off stump and was caught at first slip by a tumbling Tom Prest, whose non-appearance after lunch suggested he had injured himself in the process. If 50 for 6 wasn’t bad enough, it should have been worse still for Nottinghamshire, yet the sharpness in the field that had characterised the morning session for Hampshire deserted them after lunch. The scoreboard will say that Harrison and James fashioned a recovery in adding 69 but their partnership should have ended on 31 when Michael Neser, fielding as sub in place of Prest at first slip, let one slip through his hands when Harrison was on 9. Barker, the unlucky bowler, suffered again in his next over when James Vince, at third slip, spilled another chance when James was on 23.James had another let-off on 32 when Fletcha Middleton put him down at second slip off Fuller in what was the easiest of the three chances. In the event, it took the introduction of Liam Dawson’s left-arm spin to part the seventh-wicket pair when Harrison was bowled by a ball that skidded through low.Another opportunity went begging after tea as Olly Stone was put down on 9 off Abbas, Vince again the culprit at third slip, the Hampshire captain copping a nasty blow around the base of his left thumb in the attempt. He was able to continue, but only with the aid of strapping and painkillers. After surviving his two scares, James dug in to reach his second half-century of the season off 135 balls with his fifth boundary, finding some dogged support from Stone, with whom he added another 59 before a slip catch finally stuck, Dawson at second just about getting his fingers under a nick offered by Stone as Abbas, with the second new ball, took his fourth, before the day closed with Dillon Pennington leg before to Abbott.Nick Gubbins is missing from the Hampshire line-up after becoming a father for the first time earlier this week.
