    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Fulham star enjoyed a strong season under Marco Silva, scoring nine goals and registering six assists in the Premier League as the west London club finished 11th in the table. Iwobi has three years left on his Fulham deal but Atletico are said to have offered him a four-year contract with an annual salary of €7m (£6m/$8m), which works out at around £115,000-per-week.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Iwobi is a versatile presence who can play on both wings and centrally. He is an experienced international with 80 caps for Nigeria, and he has made a total of 77 appearances for the Cottagers. He was, of course, previously on the books of Arsenal, where he made 149 appearances.

It remains to be seen if Atletico will formalise their interest in Iwobi in the coming weeks. Given their interest in Romero, the midfielder may not be their priority.

Trott, Afghanistan lament sloppy fielding

Moments after Afghanistan’s head coach Jonathan Trott walked into the press-conference room at Chepauk, a wall-mounted TV displayed one of Afghanistan’s many drops in their World Cup game against New Zealand. Trott then lamented Afghanistan’s sloppy catching and urged them to improve on that front.”Well, we dropped a catch in the second over and we dropped a few catches, really,” Trott said. We dropped [Rachin] Ravindra on nought, we dropped [Will] Young on nought. So that sort of gives a little bit of momentum to the opposition.”I think if we had taken those and with the wicket of [Devon] Conway, we would have been in a much better position as well. Not only like they were, I think they were about 116 [110] for four at one stage. “So, we would have been in an even better position had we held on to those catches. But it wasn’t to be and unfortunately, we have to go home regretting those tonight.”Related

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi also expressed frustration over his team’s fielding effort in Chennai, where New Zealand trampled Afghanistan by 149 runs. In addition to shelling five catches, Afghanistan missed a stumping chance to let New Zealand off the hook on a two-paced Chepauk surface. Shahidi himself was responsible for two of those drops.”Very disappointed because in this level you have to take those kinds of catches. End of the day, the [dropped] catches hurt us,” Shahidi told at the post-match presentation. “The team was doing good, but the fielding, because of that we fell a little bit down.”Afghanistan had created a stir when they toppled defending champions England in Delhi, but then they suffered a drubbing against New Zealand in Chennai. Trott wants his players to tighten their fundamental skills and deal with pressure better.”Well, I certainly feel that [consistency] is what’s needed,” Trott said. “I think that’s the only thing really stopping this team is doing the basics really well and that’s consistency. So, if we had taken our catches and put New Zealand under pressure like we should have, I think you’d be looking at, not saying it would have changed the results as a fact, but you would have been looking at a very different performance.”And that starts with the mindset of doing the things that seem really simple, but doing those day in, day out, regularly, and religiously. It’s always standing in good stead because they’re generally the things that will look after you when you’re out there under pressure. And that’s what’s exposed us today, unfortunately.”Allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai, though, was a silver lining for Afghanistan, following up his double-strike with 27 off 32 balls against a skillful New Zealand attack on a helpful surface. Omarzai dismissed both Ravindra (32) and Young (54) in his first over before Tom Latham and Mark Chapman tore into him in the slog overs. Omarzai was also particularly impressive in the 2022-23 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), coming away as the highest wicket-taker among overseas players and fourth highest overall with 15 strikes in 11 matches at an economy rate of 7.17. Trott backs him to become a future star for Afghanistan.”I see him with a very bright future with the bat and with the ball,” Trott said. “I think the way he bats at the moment is developing really well and he is playing nicely. I would have liked him to have batted for a bit longer tonight and get a few more runs, but I’ve always rated him as a bowler and his bowling is coming on leaps and bounds.”Unfortunately today, he couldn’t quite get it right in the death overs when you needed him to. That was unfortunate and perhaps put them slightly ahead of where they should have been at one stage.”

According to , Fenerbahce are interested in bringing Sanchez to Istanbul. The Turkish club have prepared a €4 million contract for the player, who still has a year left on his Udinese deal.

Sanchez joined Udinese in a free transfer from Inter last year. It wasn't until December that he set foot on the field after he injured his leg in training. Considering his injury crisis, Fenerbahce have opted to offer the Chilean international with a one-year contract, which the forward can extend given he plays 70 per cent of the total minutes or contributes directly or indirectly to 15 goals.

DID YOU KNOW?

The 36-year-old wants to compete at a high level as he believes he still has a few more years in his legs. Argentine club River Plate had also reportedly shown interest and contacted the player's camp. However, with Fenerbahce advancing in their interest, a possible move to Istanbul is more likely.

Mourinho was in charge of United when the attacker joined from rivals Arsenal in January 2018, but the coach was sacked at the end of that year. Injury problems limited his playing time at Old Trafford and he was loaned to Inter in August 2019 before completing a permanent free transfer to the San Siro side the following summer.

Trans-Tasman battle to provide test of World Cup-winning credentials

Travis Head is close to a return which will lead to a reshuffled top order for Australia, while New Zealand are likely to be unchanged

Australia have progressively got better since turning things around against Sri Lanka culminating in their record thrashing over an out-classed Netherlands. But those early defeats to South Africa and India mean Australia still have to be careful of slippage with much at stake for this day fixture at Dharamsala, the picturesque ground they’ve never played an ODI at before.Australia’s batting has started to click with opener David Warner back to his imposing best at the top of the order and their middle-order struggles were alleviated at least temporarily when Glenn Maxwell went wild against Netherlands. But Australia may reshuffle their line-up by shoehorning returning opener Travis Head. It could be risky against New Zealand’s strong bowling attack with conditions in Dharamshala usually helpful for swing bowling making Trent Boult and Matt Henry particularly dangerous.Australia, of course, have a formidable pace attack of their own but encouragingly for them has been the improved form of frontline spinner Adam Zampa, whose early woes mirrored the team’s struggles.Australia’s bowlers will face a litmus test against New Zealand with Daryl Mitchell, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra among the standout batters in the tournament. This match looms as a gauge of where both teams stand among the title race with some scepticism still surrounding them. Matt Renshaw continued his good start to the summer with another half-century as Tasmania were left needing a big effort to avoid defeat in their Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland, after going to stumps on day three at 88 for 2 in pursuit of 432 for victory. After Queensland declared their second innings at 202 for 6 just after tea on Saturday, Tasmania lost both openers in the final session at Blundstone Arena. They faced a mammoth task on Sunday to either win the match or hold on for a final-day draw, after their batting crumbled in the first innings. On the back foot in the match since midway through Friday, Tasmania were bowled out for 150 early on day three when Beau Webster was caught at slip for 59.Queensland then opted against enforcing the follow-on, instead allowing Joe Burns to back up his first-innings century with 55 while Renshaw also struck 57. Ben McDermott (42 off 50) and Jimmy Peirson (28 from 25) both hit out before the former was taken superbly by Jordan Silk at cover from a full-blooded slog.Needing to bat through the best part of four sessions to save the match, Tasmania’s openers Caleb Jewell and Tim Ward offered some hope early. The pair got through 12 overs without loss before Jewell was superbly caught at slip by Burns on 22 when he edged a sharp ball from Jack Wildermuth. Ward was then beaten by a Mitchell Swepson ball that spun back at the left-hander out of the footmarks, edging it to wicketkeeper Peirson for 27.Silk and Charlie Wakim survived to the close, but Tasmania must survive three sessions or score another 344 runs to continue their unbeaten start to the season.Making matters more difficult for the Tigers is that Michael Neser has returned to Hobart for the rest of the match and can bowl for Queensland, after missing day two for personal reasons.Neser was expected to miss the remainder of the fixture when he flew home to Brisbane before day two of the match, after being not out on 51 at stumps on day one.”Things are more positive now and I can re-join the team for the remainder of the game,” Neser said in a statement on Saturday.”I am very grateful for the backing we have received and thank everyone for their support and understanding.”Neser has begun the Shield season with scores of 18, 140 and 90 before his 51 on Thursday, after also scoring two centuries in his previous two first-class innings for Glamorgan during the English summer. The Bulls have also been undefeated in their first two games, drawing with New South Wales and beating Victoria.

World Cup final pitch rated 'average' by ICC

Sandy Dharamsala outfield rated “average” for four out of five World Cup games

The ICC has given the Ahmedabad pitch used for the 2023 World Cup final between India and Australia an “average” rating. The ICC updated its list of pitch and outfield ratings this week, and surfaces for as many as eight World Cup matches across five Indian venues were rated average overall. This included five games involving hosts India. The World Cup final on November 19 was played on the same pitch that hosted the India-Pakistan fixture five weeks earlier, on the recommendation of the ICC’s pitch consultant Andy Atkinson, and the track received an average rating for both games. The surface at Eden Gardens used for the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa was also rated average. Eden Gardens received the most average ratings – five in all.The surface for the first semi-final, between India and New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, was rated “good”. The track was in focus after the pitch was changed in the lead-up to the match from a fresh surface to a used track, but fears that it would be slow did not play out with the teams aggregating 724 runs, three centuries across both innings included, with just the lone wicket falling to spin. The ICC rates pitches, and separately outfields, for all international games as one of six ratings: very good, good, average, below average, poor, unfit.During the tournament, India head coach Rahul Dravid had expressed his disagreement with two “average” pitch ratings handed out for India’s league matches in Chennai (vs Australia) and Ahmedabad (vs Pakistan). At the time, he called for greater diversity in the kinds of surfaces that are considered “good” or “very good”.Games for which the pitch was rated “average”

India v Australia, Chennai, Oct 8

India v Pakistan, Ahmedabad, Oct 14

India v England, Lucknow, Oct 29

Pakistan v Bangladesh, Kolkata, Oct 31

India v South Africa, Kolkata, Nov 5

Australia v Bangladesh, Pune, Nov 11

Australia v South Africa, Kolkata, 2nd semi-final, Nov 15

India v Australia, Ahmedabad, final, Nov 19

“If you want to only see 350-run matches and rate only those pitches as good, then I disagree with that,” Dravid had said before India’s game against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22. “You have to see different skills on display as well. If you wanted to only see fours and sixes being hit, then we have T20 for that. Why do we need anything else?”There are skills on display on 350 wickets also. That’s fine on that particular day. But in the first few games when it spins a little bit or something happens that brings the bowlers into the game, and you start rating pitches as average, where does it leave the bowlers? Why are they coming then? Play two T20 matches then. We need to have a better way of deciding what is good or average.”Dharamsala outfield rated “average”The ICC was largely satisfied with the nature of outfields, except the one in Dharamsala which was rated “average” for four out of the five games it hosted. During the tournament, a number of players had criticised the outfield. The main issue centred around the venue’s patchy grass and sandy base, which prevented players from diving freely, posing an injury threat if they did attempt it.Earlier in the year, an India vs Australia Test match was moved out of Dharamsala at short notice owing to the outfield’s condition. The outfield for the last of Dharamsala’s five World Cup games, between Australia and New Zealand on October 28, received a “very good” rating. The only other venue to receive an “average” outfield rating was the MCA Stadium in Pune, for the India vs Bangladesh fixture on October 19.
