Worse than Konate: Slot must now drop Liverpool star who lost 77% duels

And breathe. Liverpool moved a point further clear at the top of the Premier League table after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday night but it wasn’t a night without its fair share of drama.

A stunning 98th-minute thunderbolt from centre-back James Tarkowski secured a dramatic point for the hosts, in their last Merseyside derby in their long-term home.

James Tarkowski for Everton.

That came after goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah had cancelled out an opener from Toffees centre-forward Beto in the first half.

There were a few disappointing performances on the pitch for Arne Slot.

Central defender Ibrahima Konate is one of the players who may not be best pleased with his efforts at Goodison.

Ibrahima Konate's performance against Everton

The France international was selected to start alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-back for the Reds after both players had been rested for the 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle last time out.

Konate will be disappointed with his attempt to prevent Beto from getting across him and through on goal from the quick free-kick for the Everton opener, as he allowed the forward to get goalside to finish past Alisson.

The former RB Leipzig man was also brushed off too easily in the box moments before Tarkowski’s goal, as he appeared to claim a foul by exaggerating the contact. While you could argue that there was enough contact for a foul, the defender had to be stronger in that crucial moment of the game.

Konate did, however, win 100% (8/8) of his aerial duels in the match and was not dribbled past a single time, which shows that his general performance was strong, but he let himself down in two critical moments.

He was not the worst performer on the field for the Anfield giants, however, far from it. It’s safe to say Slot won’t be too happy with the performance of his man…

Chalkboard

The Liverpool star who must be dropped after Goodison

It’s safe to say that Hungary international, Dominik Szoboszlai, put in a performance that could see him dropped.

He came back into the starting line-up in the number ten position after the horror show of Plymouth Argyle and really struggled to stamp his mark on the game, despite putting plenty of effort in.

Szoboszlai failed to offer much in or out of possession for Liverpool and let himself down when he attempted to call for a penalty in the second half after a coming together with Vitalii Mykolenko. Rio Ferdinand described his actions as “embarrassing” for staying down on the floor after the incident.

As you can see in the table above, the former RB Leipzig star lost the majority of his physical duels with Everton players and was dribbled past a whopping four times, as the opposition midfield found it far too easy to get the better of him.

The right-footed dud also lost possession far too frequently, considering the incredibly little threat he offered in the final third, and that is why he was even worse than Konate, as his all-round display was simply not good enough.

Therefore, Slot must instantly ditch the central attacking midfielder from the starting line-up, after his disastrous showing at Goodison on Wednesday night.

Perfect Alvarez replacement: Man City must rue selling "battering ram"

Manchester City were unusually active during the recent January transfer window in reaction to the club’s disappointing performances on the pitch this season.

City are 20 points off Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table, they have already been knocked out of the League Cup, and they exited the Champions League before the last 16 stage.

Abdukodir Khusanov, Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, and Vitor Reis were all added to Pep Guardiola’s side to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the season, and beyond.

Marmoush, who arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported fee of £59m, was the headline addition of the window and announced himself to The Etihad crowd with a stunning first-half hat-trick against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

The Egypt international scored 15 goals in 17 matches in the Bundesliga during the first half of the season and will be hoping to continue to impress in front of goal with the Cityzens.

He could, potentially, be viewed as the eventual replacement for Argentine centre-forward Julian Alvarez, who moved on from The Etihad last summer.

How much Man City sold Julian Alvarez for

The Premier League champions decided to cash in on the World Cup winner at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and raked in a reported fee of £82m from Atletico Madrid for his services.

Guardiola revealed that the 24-year-old star had asked to move on from the club as he wanted a “new challenge”, and had potentially become frustrated by playing second-fiddle to Erling Haaland in the centre-forward position, which often forced him to play in a deeper position.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

It was a blow for Manchester City, though, because the Argentina international had just come off the back of a haul of 19 goals and 13 assists in 54 appearances in all competitions last season.

That came after the young marksman had found the back of the net 17 times in all competitions during his debut campaign with the Premier League side, after his move from River Plate for a modest fee of £14m.

Alvarez made the move to Atletico Madrid to play under Diego Simeone and has, so far, enjoyed a strong first season with the Spanish side in the 2024/25 campaign.

The former Manchester City centre-forward has racked up 20 goals and five assists in 39 appearances in all competitions, including six goals in eight outings in the Champions League.

Julian Alvarez for Atletico Madrid.

Guardiola may, now, have some regrets about cashing in on the young attacker, instead of trying to convince him to change his mind about wanting to move on from The Etihad, as he lost a terrific striker who offered a consistent threat at the top end of the pitch as an alternative to Haaland.

However, a sale the Spanish head coach may rue even more was the one that saw Liam Delap move on from the club, after his impressive progression in recent years.

Liam Delap's progression at Manchester City

The England U21 international joined City from Derby’s U18s in the summer of 2019 and immediately hit the ground running with a return of seven goals and six assists in 11 U18 Premier League matches during the 2019/20 campaign.

Delap was handed a huge chance to impress in the first-team against Bournemouth in the League Cup at the start of the 2020/21 season and scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win for City.

He dropped back down to the academy, however, after that goal and ended the campaign with an exceptional return of 24 goals in 20 Premier League 2 games for the U21s.

As you can see in the table above, Delap was incredibly prolific at youth level for City and showed promise in the first-team set-up, with one goal in six matches.

Where Are They Now

The English forward also spent time on loan in the Championship, playing for Stoke City, Preston North End, and Hull City. It was his form with the Tigers – a return of eight goals in 31 league matches – that earned him a move to Premier League side Ipswich Town.

Why Manchester City must rue selling Liam Delap

City and Guardiola allowed Delap to join the Tractor Boys for a reported fee of £20m, with £15m guaranteed, and they should rue selling him as he could have been the perfect Alvarez replacement.

The Cityzens were left with Haaland as their only natural centre-forward option when the Argentine forward moved on last summer, but they already had a fantastic young number nine on their books who could have come into the squad, without costing City a penny.

Ipswich Town'sLiamDelapapplauds fans after the match

Delap, who FBref have as a statistically similar player to Jean-Philippe Mateta, Moise Kean, and Benjamin Sesko, has caught the eye in the Premier League for Ipswich this season.

The 22-year-old marksman has scored ten goals and provided two assists in 26 appearances in the top-flight for the struggling side, who currently sit in the relegation zone.

He has been a shining light in a dismal campaign for Kieran McKenna’s team, as he has proven that he has the quality to be a reliable goalscorer at Premier League level.

As you can see in the table above, Delap has been ruthless with the chances that have come his way in front of goal, as the young gem has outperformed his xG by roughly two goals.

The “one-man battering ram,” as described by Opta Analyst, has also won 44% of his aerial duels and completed 1.2 dribbles per game, which shows that he can also offer a physical and front-foot presence at the top end of the pitch.

Alvarez scored 11 Premier League goals last season and is currently on nine in LaLiga for Atletico, which suggests that Delap – given his return of ten top-flight strikes already this term – can provide a similar goalscoring threat.

The Man City star has been brilliant this season

Therefore, Man City should rue cashing in on the 22-year-old forward before they provided him with a chance to stake a claim for a regular place in the first-team squad, as he could have been the perfect – homegrown and free – replacement for Alvarez.

Pakistan battle in 355-run chase as late breakthrough buoys England

Brook century and trio of wonder-balls give England scent of famous series win

Andrew Miller11-Dec-2022Close Pakistan 202 (Babar 75, Shakeel 63, Leach 4-98) and 198 for 4 (Shakeel 54*, Faheem 3*) need another 157 runs to beat England 281 (Duckett 63, Pope 60, Abrar 7-114) and 275 (Brook 108, Abrar 4-120) For the best part of 32 overs, Imam-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel thwarted an England attack that had been buoyed by a trio of superb deliveries in the first hour after lunch, to take a stiff Pakistan chase down to a potentially gripping fourth-day climax, and keep England’s hope of a famous series win on ice for another day … and potentially another Test. But then, with the shadows lengthening, and England starting to sweat on a route through a doughty 107-run stand for the fourth wicket, Imam leaned into an expansive drive out of the rough against Jack Leach, and scuffed a fast edge to Joe Root at slip to fall for 60 and crank the door ajar once more.Though Saud Shakeel endured to the close on 54 not out in partnership with Faheem Ashraf, the equation at stumps was simple. Six more wickets for England to take a 2-0 series lead with Karachi still to come, or 157 runs for Pakistan to draw level at 1-1 with their second-highest successful Test run chase of 355.Related

Abrar: come for the mystery, stay for the legspin

It had been another gripping day of ebb-and-flow Test cricket, with Pakistan’s evening alliance mirroring their free-flowing opening stand of 64 in 15 overs before lunch, in which Mohammad Rizwan – promoted to open after Imam was sent for a scan on a damaged hamstring – and Abdullah Shafique saw off the new ball at a brisk tempo of 4.27 an over.Prior to that, England themselves had effectively auto-completed their second innings, with Harry Brook’s second Test century the highlight of a fast-forwarded hour of batting in which they lost their last five wickets for the addition of 73 runs. Despite the Test still having the best part of nine sessions to run at that stage, England’s approach reflected their belief that the surface still had plenty to offer their own bowlers, and – as with their 342-run declaration in Rawalpindi – by leaving Pakistan a nominally feasible target of 355, they would be all the better placed to induce errors.Harry Brook celebrates his second Test hundred•AFP/Getty ImagesAnd, as had also been displayed in that first Test, England possess in James Anderson a trump card every bit as unique as Abrar Ahmed had proven to be in the course of his 11-wicket debut, but also 177 Tests and 20 years more experienced. Now as then, Anderson had been a notable absentee in the opening exchanges, as Stokes held his main man back to exploit the possibility of reverse swing. When he arrived for the first over of the afternoon, he quickly transformed the innings prognosis.Anderson’s first four deliveries of the session were negotiated safely enough, but the fifth was simply unplayable – a full-length seaming delivery that angled in at Rizwan then jagged wickedly around his outside edge to hit the top of off. Rizwan looked dumbfounded as he turned to survey the wreckage, but he had to go for 30 from 43 balls, and England had their opening at 66 for 1.Leach had been warming up to share the afternoon honours, but Stokes immediately signalled for Ollie Robinson to make it an all-seam attack. In his second over of the session, he too had produced a wonder-ball. With a hint of uneven bounce forcing Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, to play watchfully against the straight ball, Robinson instead hit the seam a full foot outside off, and Babar, seemingly grateful to be able to leave one, could only look on aghast at the ball zipped back to hit the top of off too.Babar Azam had his off stump pegged back by Ollie Robinson•Matthew Lewis/Getty ImagesShafique all but succumbed to a near-identical delivery in Robinson’s next over, but he wouldn’t survive for much longer. Stokes rang the changes once more, recalling his quickest bowler, Mark Wood, in the final over before drinks, and with his very first ball, he burst another off-stump rattler through Shafique’s defences, again from wide of the crease, but keeping low as it skidded on with extra oomph. At 83 for 3, Pakistan’s innings was pinned to the ropes. But with his notable willingness to save his seamers for the key moments, Stokes instead leaned heavily on his spinners with in-out fields, tempting Pakistan to hit through the phalanx of close catchers. Once again, his first-innings weapon, Jack Leach, was Stokes’ most trusted option, but with two left-handers lining him up, Leach endured some rough treatment, going at 4.40 in the course of his 20 overs. Until, of course, he produced the moment that repaid the faith, and unlocked England’s prospects of closing out the game. The opportunities had kept coming regardless, up until that moment – on 4, Shakeel top-edged a slog-sweep off Root that fell short of Wood, set a few metres too deep at midwicket, while on 19, Imam drilled a hard chance back down the pitch at Will Jacks, who couldn’t cling on. The biggest let-off, however, came deep into the final session, as Imam, then on 54, flicked his bat at a leg-side lifter but Stokes declined the review that would have shown a faint tickle. It was the slightest indication that England’s captain was starting to feel the heat, as Imam and Shakeel grew in confidence with a series of sweetly-timed cover drives, particularly off the then-leaky Leach.Despite the excitement generated by England’s trio of early wickets, England found little in the way of reverse-swing as the innings progressed, on a day-three pitch that was arguably playing at its best. Stokes himself resisted any temptation to break the emergency glass and bring himself on for a spell, although that prospect remains for an intriguing fourth-day finish, when only the draw will be off the table.Imam-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel’s partnership frustrated England•PCBIn spite of Pakistan’s relative success in the morning session, the major milestone had belonged to Brook, who converted his overnight 74 to his second hundred in four innings on this trip. By the time he holed out to deep square leg for 108, Brook had racked up 14 fours and a six in his 149-ball stay, replete with powerful strokeplay and impressive judgement of length, particularly against the spin of Abrar, who was once again Pakistan’s most threatening bowler, as he finished with 4 for 120, and an 11-wicket match haul on debut.Abrar came in for some heavy blows in the first hour, however, with Brook seizing on a series of drags to the leg-side, and Stokes launching the same bowler over the straight boundary for six, to draw him level with his coach Brendon McCullum on 107 Test sixes, the most by any player. Before he could convert that start into anything more meaningful, however, Stokes got underneath a heave to leg, where Ali on the midwicket boundary ran round for a well-judged catch. Robinson then missed a slog to leg as Abrar skidded a googly through his gate for his 11th wicket, before Wood poked a fast legbreak from Zahid Mahmood to slip and Anderson missed a reverse sweep to wrap up the innings. At that stage, and again after lunch, England were perfectly content with their match situation. By the close, notwithstanding Leach’s late breakthrough, they were a touch less comfortable.

"Robust" rising star reveals why he just blocked chance to join Aston Villa

In a transfer window full of positives, Aston Villa still found themselves on the end of a surprise rejection from a rising star who has now explained his January decision.

Aston Villa transfer news

Into the Champions League last 16 and battling for the chance to qualify among Europe’s elite for a second season in a row, Aston Villa are a difficult club to turn down these days. It’s an offer that Marcus Rashford couldn’t refuse amid several interested parties. It’s even one that three-time Champions League winner Marco Asensio didn’t refuse and rightly so.

Paris St Germain's MarcoAsensioduring the warm up before the match

Those in the Midlands are no longer left to escape relegation courtesy of a goal-line technology malfunction or final day battle. Those days are long behind them. Instead, they’re a side to be reckoned with at their best under Unai Emery, having earned a point against Juventus and even defeated Bayern Munich earlier in the current campaign.

So, to reject the Midlands club in their current impressive state seems as strange decision, but teenage forward Kparobo Arierhi has explained why he did exactly that during the January transfer window.

The 18-year-old told Africa Foot, as relayed by Sport Witness: “I wanted the opportunity to play in the first team. That’s why I chose to sign with Lillestrøm, despite interest from Aston Villa and Lyon.

“Signing my first professional contract with Lillestrøm is an incredible feeling, I’m making my dream come true. My goal is to establish myself in the first team, score a lot of goals and help the team win matches.”

Aston Villa may now use contract doubts to land "strong" Duran replacement

He’s a man in demand…

Choosing to join Norweigian side Lillestrom instead after leaving the Beyong Limits acedemy in Nigeria, Arierhi may yet pop up Aston Villa’s radar once again when he’s ready for his next move, having take his first step into European football recently.

"Robust" Arierhi made intelligent decision

Whilst turning down the interest of a Champions League club may seem an absurd choice, it was the right one for Arierhi. Making his first move into European football, the last thing that the 18-year-old needed was for his game time to become limited, which would have been the case in the Midlands. The young forward needs senior minutes which should arrive in Norway.

Described as “robust” by Youth Scouting, Arierhi remains one to watch at 18 years old and if his move to Lillestrom goes to plan then Villa’s January interest won’t be the final time that a top club come calling.

As Aston Villa’s rise under Emery continues, their transfer activity could yet take them to Norway and back to a young gem in Arierhi.
