Chelsea women's player ratings vs Man City: Sonia Bompastor's first trophy secured! Mayra Ramirez stars as Blues win League Cup with quadruple dream still alive

The Colombia international was involved in both goals as the champions of England won the competition for the first time in four years.

Chelsea ended an incredible run of three successive Women's League Cup final losses by defeating Manchester City in Saturday's final to claim the first trophy of the Sonia Bompastor era. Mayra Ramirez's first half strike and an unfortunate own goal just 13 minutes from time by Yui Hasegawa gave the Blues the victory and what they will hope is the first of four trophies this term.

There were just eight minutes on the clock when Chelsea broke the deadlock, Lauren James' perfect pass releasing Ramirez, who beat Ayaka Yamashita at the second time of asking. The Colombia international should've had a second before the half hour mark, too, but could only find the sidenetting after rounding the goalkeeper with ease.

For Man City, clear-cut chances proved hard to come by. Hannah Hampton was forced into a few smart stops but the Chelsea players were largely able to crowd out star striker Khadija Shaw, who had an enthralling individual battle with Millie Bright. Instead, the Blues had a big opportunity to double their lead on the hour mark, only for Yamashita to make a fantastic point blank save to deny Johanna Rytting Kaneyrd. Within four minutes, City made that miss look costly when Aoba Fujino somehow beat Hampton at her near post.

However, Chelsea would not be left to rue chances gone by. Not long after Hampton redeemed herself with a strong block to thwart Shaw, Ramirez was tormenting the City defence again and it was her cross that was turned into her own net by Hasegawa for the game-defining moment. It was a cruel way for the final to be decided, especially given Hasegawa's world-class consistency for her club, but Chelsea won't care about that as they celebrate winning the first of four trophies on offer in these final two months of the season.

Hannah Hampton (5/10):

Made some strong saves throughout but had to do better for City's equaliser.

Lucy Bronze (6/10):

Was up against an in-form opponent in Fowler but did well to limit her impact. Offered a good outlet going forward, though wasn't without some sloppy moments.

Nathalie Bjorn (7/10):

Mopped up well at the back and did very little wrong on the ball.

Millie Bright (7/10):

Had a good battle with Shaw, winning her fair share of a tough duel.

Sandy Baltimore (6/10):

Had a few sloppy moments when she didn't seem to be fully switched on but balanced it out with some great attacking play, including a brilliant pass which put Ramirez one-on-one.

Sjoeke Nusken (7/10):

Got stuck into her defending and battled hard to keep City at bay.

Erin Cuthbert (7/10):

Provided great support to the defence, often mopping up in the box.

Catarina Macario (6/10):

Had a few strong runs where she brushed opponents aside to start an attack, with her part in the goal the most noteworthy example.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (5/10):

Really quiet. Was a little more involved at the start of the second half but generally struggled to make an impact.

Mayra Ramirez (8/10):

Had Aleixandri's number in their individual duel, always winning. Should've scored twice but made a difference with her lone strike and the teasing cross that Hasegawa turned into her own net.

Lauren James (7/10):

Had some bright moments going forward, played a sublime pass for Ramirez's opener and honoured her defensive duties well.

Getty Images SportSubs & Manager

Aggie Beever-Jones (N/A):

Didn't have too much time to make her mark but added energy and played her role in the winning goal.

Maika Hamano (N/A):

Another introduction which injected more life into this Chelsea team in the closing stages.

Wieke Kaptein (N/A):

Replaced Ramirez shortly after the winning goal went in and helped her side see the game out.

Niamh Charles (N/A):

Another late sub as Chelsea protected the result.

Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Deployed a battle-hardened team that suited the conditions of a not-so-great pitch and a game that was scrappy in parts, while still sprinkled with game-changing quality. Didn't panic with her subs either, waiting patiently to make them, and once introduced they made an impact, helping to secure victory and a first trophy of her Chelsea era.

Spurs star who was "more skilled than Bale" is now struggling in Greece

They might not have been the most successful team over the last 15 years, but Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with some ridiculously talented footballers.

For example, before his move to Bayern Munich, Harry Kane was undoubtedly the best striker in the Premier League and formed one of the best-attacking partnerships ever alongside Son Heung-min.

However, years before those two became the superstars they are, another Spurs attacker was the envy of the footballing world: Gareth Bale.

The Welsh legend was a force of nature for the Lilywhites and eventually netted the team a world record £85m, which was infamously spent on seven somewhat underwhelming signings, including one player who was supposedly more skilful than the Champions League winner, but is now struggling in the Greek Super League.

Spurs' not so magnificent seven

Yes, with the money made on Bale’s sale, Daniel Levy and Co opted to splash the cash on seven new signings that summer, and while some of them panned out okay, most did not.

Roberto Soldado

For example, while Roberto Soldado and Paulinho arrived with plenty of hype, the former due to his incredible goal record in Spain and the latter because of comparisons to Frank Lampard, neither one achieved much of anything at the club.

Likewise, while none of them were dreadful, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches all left the North Londoners within three years, leaving little to no mark on the club whatsoever.

However, while five of the seven arrivals left arguably as flops, there were two who certainly had more of a positive impact.

The first is Christan Eriksen, who was undoubtedly the most successful of the seven and made 305 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 69 goals and providing 88 assists before leaving to join Inter Milan in January 2020.

The final member of the not-so-magnificent seven wasn’t as successful as the Dane, but he remained in North London for longer and certainly made his mark, although comparisons to Bale in the early days look even more ridiculous now that he’s struggling in the Greek Super League.

The former Spurs star struggling in Greece

So, with six of the seven players already covered, it should come as no surprise that the player we are talking about is Erik Lamela.

Erik Lamela

The Argentine ace joined the North Londoners for around £25.8m in late August 2013, and while he wasn’t as game-changing as Eriksen was, he was significantly more impactful than the other five players signed that summer.

In fact, to his credit, the Carapachay-born dynamo was the last man standing from the magnificent seven and ended up making 257 appearances for the club before joining Sevilla as part of a swap deal in July 2021.

In those appearances, the 32-year-old scored 37 goals, provided 44 assists and occasionally showed real glimpses of quality, such as his Puskas-winning goal in the North London Derby.

While these moments helped justify the money spent on him, he could never quite live up to the expectations people had of him when he first arrived in N17, especially after club legend Ossie Ardiles proclaimed that he was “more skilled than Bale.”

Such comments look even more outrageous today, as after three middling seasons at Sevilla, the 25-capped international joined Greek side AEK Athens, and while he’s not been woeful, he hasn’t been great either.

In 13 appearances across all competitions, the former Spurs star has failed to score a single goal and has just three assists to his name, which is not the sort of output you would expect from someone of his ability.

Ultimately, despite being a decent servant to the club, Lamela could never live up to the expectations people had of him at Spurs, and it looks like that may be happening to him again, only this time in Greece.

He's like Palmer: Spurs could sign dream Son replacement for just £25m

Stoic Sam Evans sees Leicestershire to draw at Durham

Opener unbeaten on 77 as Durham find chances hard to come by after overnight declaration 394 ahead

ECB Reporters Network17-Apr-2022Leicestershire defiantly held out for a draw in their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two match against Durham at the Riverside, losing only two wickets on the final day of the contest.Durham declared overnight with a lead of 394 in the hope of pressing for their first victory of the campaign, but chances were hard to come by on a lifeless wicket. Ollie Gibson had a day to remember as he claimed his maiden first-class wicket to mark an encouraging performance with the ball in difficult conditions.Sam Evans provided the stoic defence required to see his team to the draw, collecting his first fifty of the term and holding out an end for over 250 deliveries, unbeaten on 77 before the captains shook hands. Durham moved to second place in the table after gaining 15 points, while Leicestershire collected 12 for their exploits to remain undefeated after two matches. After Durham declared their second innings, Leicestershire began their attempt to see out the day in defiant fashion with Hassan Azad and Evans. Chris Rushworth and Matthew Potts passed the bat on a few occasions, while the odd delivery kept low, but it was not enough to trouble the visitors’ openers. Both batters received blows to the body and Evans was struck on the helmet as he attempted to avoid a bouncer from Potts. However, they were rewarded for their resilience when Evans found the fence to bring up the fifty partnership in the 19th over. Leicestershire were on their way to shutting out the home side in the morning session, but Azad made an uncharacteristic mistake against Liam Trevaskis, losing his shape a the crease and was subsequently bowled through his legs to end the opening stand for 66. Frustration crept in for the home side after lunch as George Rhodes survived edging Potts between Ned Eckersley and David Bedingham, and a great shout for a catch at short leg by Sean Dickson which was deemed to have hit the ground.Gibson eventually prised out Rhodes to claim a deserved maiden first-class wicket, with arguably one of his worst deliveries of the match as the Leicestershire man gloved a leg glance behind to Eckersley. Evans’ defiance continued and he worked his way to his half-century from 140 balls, keeping matters simple with a stubborn resistance against the home side.Durham skipper Scott Borthwick attempted a variety of methods to look for a way into the Leicestershire line-up, but the Riverside day-four pitch offered no assistance for the home side in pursuit of their first win of the season. Evans and Colin Ackermann were steadfast in their defence and posted an unbeaten partnership of 84 for the third wicket before both sides agreed to call time on the contest, settling for the stalemate.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. men's national team manager Mauricio Pochettino is preparing his 23-man squad for the CONCACAF Nations League – the USMNT play Panama Thursday night in a semifinal as they look to secure their fourth-straight title in the competition.

However, his gaze is also focused on 2026, with the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico on the horizon. And Pochettino says he's embracing expectations from American soccer fans.

“I think the pressure is going to be there because we are a host,” said Pochettino, speaking to the media in London last week. “It’s a country where the mentality is about winning. In sport, in everything that Americans are involved in, they want to win. That is the culture. Of course, it is going to be a pressure, but a welcome one. That means that we are going to feel the adrenaline that we need to feel.”

Pochetino has said the USMNT is targeting at least a quarterfinal appearance in the World Cup, and added that ambitions for the program's longer-term future are lofty.

"In five or 10 years, for sure we can be No. 1 in the world," he said. "It could be.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Argentine was appointed U.S. manager last fall after Gregg Berhalter was removed following the USMNT's embarrassing Group Stage exit from Copa America 2024. However, Pochettino praised Berhalter for creating a "very good mentality and culture" during his time in charge of the program.

"The mentality is there, the discipline is there," said Pochettino, who will be compete for his first trophy in charge of the program in the Nations League – an important one as the big picture of 2026 looms.

“It’s really important that we need to build our own team,” he said. “It’s not only the characteristics of the players, it’s about the discipline and the atmosphere that we want to create in the national team. We need 23 or 26 players who will be happy to be in the squad and want to help the national team from every position. We have to create this good energy. Because if not, it’s going to be tough.”

Pochettino also praised U.S. Soccer for the Atlanta-based state-of-the-art training facility that they announced in 2023. The venue will feature more than a dozen fields across 200 acres of space with world-class facilities. The site is expected to open in early 2026, giving U.S. Soccer the opportunity to utilize the space ahead of the World Cup.

“The eight countries which have won the World Cup all have amazing training centers,” Pochettino said. “Before the World Cup, U.S. Soccer is building an amazing training center in Atlanta and that is going to be one of the most unbelievable training centers in the world. That is going to be the base of soccer. It is the moment where people can see, soccer is going to be a serious sport because it has a home.

“We need to congratulate the federation, and all the donors involved, who are helping to grow the sport, because it’s No. 1 in the world. Because in five or 10 years, for sure we can be No. 1 in the world. It could be.”

Amorim must sell Man Utd’s 3/10 Ten Hag dud whose value has risen by 100%

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup campaign for the 2024/25 season came to an end on Thursday night. The Red Devils lost 4-3 to Tottenham Hotspur in North London, in one of the most chaotic games of the season so far.

Tottenham were 3-0 up with half an hour to go, but two goalkeeper blunders from Fraser Forster gifted two goals to United, with Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo profiting from his errors to give United hope. Spurs scored directly from a corner to make it 4-2 and managed to avoid a late scare despite Jonny Evans scoring in stoppage time.

United played well on the night but there were some poor performers. Two of their worst players were signings made by Erik ten Hag.

The Ten Hag signings who struggled vs Spurs

Former Red Devils manager Ten Hag loved to sign his players from his old club Ajax. Two of those he brought with him to the Red side of Manchester were Antony, who cost £81.3m, and Lisandro Martinez, for whom the club paid £56.7m.

It was those two who struggled against the Lilywhites in the Carabao Cup. Antony put in an incredibly frustrating performance and was subbed off after 55 minutes. Playing as a number 10, he failed to create any chances, which was noted by the Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

He gave Antony a 4/10 for his efforts against Spurs and was incredibly critical of the United number 21. He explained that he ‘did not make United play’ even though he was one of the key attacking players in the team.

Martinez was also poor, and at fault for arguably two goals. His clearance for Dejan Kulusevski’s strike to make it 2-0 essentially put it on a plate for the Swede.

Then, for Dominic Solanke’s second of the night and Spurs’ third, he played the striker onside and then failed to put in a challenge, as the England international burst past him and fired home.

Just as he did for Antony, Luckhurst gave the Argentine World Cup winner a 4/10 for his performance. He was critical of Martinez’s ‘weak clearance’ for the opener, before explaining he was ‘even worse’ for Solanke’s finish.

Those two Ten Hag signings certainly let United down at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but there was arguably one who was even worse, goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

The Man Utd star who needs to be sold

It was a tough night for Turkey international Bayindir, who has barely played this season or last, acting as second choice to Andre Onana. In total, the 26-year-old has played just four times, conceding eight goals in that time.

Against Spurs, he was poor. The Red Devils’ number one received a 3/10 rating from Luckhurst for his performance, who left him a scathing review. He described his efforts for the first goal as ‘shoddy goalkeeping’, and explained he was ‘pathetic’ for Son’s strike.

Indeed, the former Fenerbahce man had some dismal stats from the game according to Sofascore. His kicking was inaccurate, and he completed just 61% of his passes, which included two from 12 long balls. The goalkeeper also made one error that led to a goal.

Interestingly, however, his value has risen by 100% since he joined. He cost the Red Devils £4.3m two summers ago, and is now valued at €10m (£8.6m), according to Transfermarkt.

Given that spike in value, perhaps Ruben Amorim will choose to cash in on Bayindir as he looks to freshen the squad up.

It might well be time to cash in on this calamitous Ten Hag signing. Bayindir – who reportedly wants to leave in January – has not exactly covered himself in glory for United, although his opportunities have been limited during his time at the club.

Jack Leach claims eight as Somerset seal record-breaking win over Gloucestershire

Somerset steamrollered Gloucestershire’s patched-up team to complete a record-breaking LV= County Championship victory by an innings and 246 runs inside three days at Bristol. It was the Cider county’s biggest ever margin of victory over their arch-rivals, which was previously by an innings and 170 at Taunton back in 1893, a match in which WG Grace featured for the visitors.Gloucestershire, without injured skipper Graeme van Buuren, were bowled out for 186 in their first innings from an overnight 119 for 4, Jack Leach finishing with 5 for 49 from 25.4 overs. There was no respite for a home side including three new loan signings when they followed on 405 behind beneath cloudless skies. Leach completed match figures of 8 for 90, while teenager Jacob Bethell hit 61 in a total of 159.Somerset took 23 points to Gloucestershire’s one and have now reeled off successive victories after losing their first three Championship fixtures. With van Burren nursing a shoulder injury sustained in the field on day two, Somerset needed only five wickets at the start of the day to wrap up their opponents’ first innings.Bethell, on a one-match loan to Gloucestershire from Warwickshire, began with a sweet on-drive for four off Craig Overton and followed up with another boundary in the same over. There was concern for Somerset when Overton was forced off by a twinge in his left knee, but the England all-rounder was able to return to bowl at the end of the innings.Josh Davey made the breakthrough for Somerset with the total on 144, rapping Ryan Higgins on the back pad and pinning him lbw for 31, before quickly having Zafar Gofar taken at slip.Lewis Gregory uprooted Zak Chappell’s middle stump and the impressive Bethell fell leg-before on the back foot to Leach for 37 as Gloucestershire lurched to 152 for 8.Last pair Matt Taylor and Brad Wheal offered some resistance, taking the total to 186 for 8 at lunch. Taylor finished 24 not out when Wheal fell lbw to a ball from Leach that appeared to keep low.Gloucestershire’s second innings had reached 24 in the ninth over when George Scott edged Peter Siddle straight to James Hildreth at second slip.Marcus Harris fell on the same total, miscuing a pull shot off Overton and skying a catch to Tom Lammonby at mid-on. It was 28 for 3 when Miles Hammond nicked a ball from Davey through to wicketkeeper Steve Davies.Higgins was caught behind for 16 trying to force Gregory off the back foot and by tea Gloucestershire were in disarray at 74 for 4.Bethell had again given a lesson in technique to more experienced colleagues. But any hopes of a recovery disappeared in the over after the interval when James Bracey swept Leach and Tom Abell took an outstanding catch, one-handed above his head at backward square leg.Luck continued to desert injury-plagued Gloucestershire as Bethell slipped when called for a quick single off Leach by Zafar Gohar, who was forced to turn back and failed to beat Abell’s throw to the bowler’s end.Chappell was bowled off an inside edge for 20 by Overton, who then took a low catch at second slip off Leach to remove Taylor.Bethell’s mature batting in a crisis brought him a deserved half-century off 84 balls, with eight fours. But when he swept Leach into the hands of Lammonby at deep square, Somerset celebrated an overwhelming success.
