A £9m loss: Tottenham must now sell Conte dud who’s "absolutely ridiculous"

Unsurprisingly, this season has been another one full of ups and downs for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou has been able to get the team to look sublime in some games but utterly hopeless in others.

The Australian has turned the team into one of the most entertaining in the country, but to reach the next level and cut out the inconsistencies, he’ll need Daniel Levy and Co to back him in the upcoming transfer windows, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

Fortunately, it appears the club are now willing to clear out the deadwood, as recent reports suggest one of Postecoglou’s most frustrating players could be axed in 2025.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Tottenham Hotspur expert John Wenham, Spurs would be willing to take a big hit to sell Yves Bissouma next year.

Yves Bissouma

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said, “I think at this point they would be prepared to accept around £16million,” representing a £9m loss on the £25m the club paid for him under the management of Antonio Conte.

This opinion comes off the back of a report from football.london’s Alasdair Gold earlier this month, in which the respected journalist also proclaimed a belief that the club are now more than willing to sell the Mali international next year.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

Overall, selling the former Brighton & Hove Albion star for a loss would confirm that signing him was a mistake in the first place, but given his performances for the club, cutting their losses would be the smart thing to do for Levy and Co.

Why Spurs should sell Bissouma

So, the very first thing to say is that, on his day, Bissouma can be an incredibly effective midfielder, both in attack and defence, but therein lies the first reason he should be sold; it’s rarely his day.

Despite this now being his third season in North London, the former Brighton ace has failed to make himself an integral member of the first team, as just when it looks like he might be set for an extended run of good form, he goes and makes a mistake.

For example, despite putting in some impressive displays this season, like against Manchester City in the League Cup, the Issia-born star has given Postecoglou reasons to doubt him, thanks to his woeful performances against Chelsea and Rangers, for which Gold gave him a 3/10 and 4/10 match rating, respectively.

On top of putting in lacklustre showings, the “absolutely ridiculous” midfielder, as dubbed by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, has also picked up his fair share of suspensions.

For example, he missed the win over Southampton for picking up too many yellow cards and, last season, he earned a second yellow for diving against Luton Town and a straight red for a nasty foul away to Nottingham Forest.

Lastly, since joining the Lilywhites, he has missed 23 games for club and country through injury, meaning his fitness is almost as unreliable as he is on the pitch.

Ultimately, Bissouma is a talented player, but he’s clearly too inconsistent to help take Spurs forwards, so even though they’ll likely make a loss, it would make sense for Levy and Co to cut their losses and sell him as soon as possible.

Arsenal target "lethal" £38m Jesus upgrade who could be their own Kane

It may be too early to say with any authority, but it is starting to look like Arsenal might be returning to their incredible best.

The North Londoners were in a sorry state before the international break, with just one win in their previous five games, but since then, they’ve beaten Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and Sporting CP in the Champions League.

Moreover, with eight goals in these games, it looks like the club’s troubles in front of goal have subsided somewhat, but there is always room for improvement.

That seems to be the club’s opinion anyway, as recent reports have now linked one of the most exciting strikers in Europe with a move to the club, a striker who’s been compared to Harry Kane and could spell big trouble for Gabriel Jesus’ future in N5.

Arsenal transfer news

According to recent reports in Italy, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui.

Mateo Retegui for Italy

The report claims that alongside the Gunners, there are now ‘many big clubs’ keen on signing the Italian marksman next year.

This increased interest in the exciting forward has unsurprisingly increased the price tag on his head, and according to the report, it has now more than doubled from €22m to at least €45m, which is around £38m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In all, signing Retegui could prove complicated and costly, but given his form this season and the comparisons to Kane, it would be well worth it, even if it would be bad news for Jesus.

Retegui's comparison to Kane and Jesus

So, before we look at how Retegui stacks up against Jesus, who he’d surely be competing with for the place just behind Kai Havertz, where has this comparison to Kane come from?

Well, it stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Champions League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the fifth most similar striker to the Italian this season.

To better understand how this conclusion was reached, we can examine the underlying metrics in which the pair ranked closely, metrics including but not limited to non-penalty goals plus assists, shots on target, shot-creating actions, blocks, clearances and carries, all per 90.

On top of these statistical parallels, there are more surface-level similarities between the pair, such as the fact they’re both right-footed and the Englishman is 6 foot 2 while the Italian is 6 foot 1.

However, while this comparison to arguably the best striker in the world is undoubtedly encouraging, how does the former Genoa ace stack up to Jesus?

Well, from a pure output perspective, it’s not even close as in his 16 appearances this season, totalling 579 minutes, the former Manchester City star has scored one goal and provided one assist, equating to an average of a goal involvement every eight games, or every 289.5 minutes.

In contrast, Atalanta’s “lethal” marksman, as dubbed by Italian manager Luciano Spalletti, has scored 14 goals and provided three assists in 19 appearances, totalling 1153 minutes, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 1.11 games, or every 67.8 minutes – talk about efficiency.

Ultimately, there just isn’t a competition between Retegui and Jesus, so should Arsenal have the chance to sign the San Fernando-born machine in 2025, they must take it, and who knows, he might even be able to displace Havertz from the starting number nine role.

Leeds scouts tracking young full-back who scored six times last season

Leeds United are interested in signing a 23-year-old from Scotland after keeping a close eye on his progress this season, according to a new report. The Whites continued from where they left off against Derby County on the weekend, as they beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

0 duels won, 0 shots: Farke simply must drop 5/10 Leeds star after Boro

Leeds United returned to the top of the Championship table last night.

1 ByEthan Lamb Dec 11, 2024 Leeds transfer news

The January transfer window has the potential to be a busy month for the Yorkshire side, as ins and outs could occur as Daniel Farke plans for the second half of the campaign, in which they will be looking to fight for a place in the Premier League.

One player who could be on his way out of Leeds is striker Joe Gelhardt, as he is keen on joining Rangers after they showed an interest in securing his services in January. The forward has struggled for regular minutes this season and an exit appears likely in the New Year as he doesn’t seem to fit into Farke’s plans. However, Leeds are undecided on what to do with Gelhardt, as they weigh up whether to send him out on loan or wait for a permanent offer to arrive, something Rangers are unlikely to stump up.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

Gelhardt’s departure could help Leeds bring in Diego Luna, who they are interested in signing. Luna has emerged as a target for the Yorkshire side, and they are now weighing up whether to make a move in January, but as of yet a deal is in no way imminent. The Whites have been keeping a close eye on his progress, but they are not the only team to be watching the player, and it could be a costly transfer for a young prospect, as his side want as much as £3 million.

Leeds plotting January move for 23 y/o after scouting trips

According to Rangers News, Leeds United are interested in signing Keelan Adams from Scottish side Falkirk. The 23-year-old joined the Scottish Championship side back in February from Cumbernauld CFC.

Adams didn’t play for Falkirk last season, as he was sent back on loan to Cumbernauld when he joined the club. He played 33 times there in the Lowland League, during which he scored six goals and grabbed four assists as a right-back. He has continued that impressive form into this campaign for Falkirk.

That has caught the attention of Leeds, who have been keeping a close eye on his progress this season. However, the Yorkshire side are not alone in their pursuit, as Swansea City have also been keeping an eye on his development, as well as Rangers.

Despite the interest from the three sides, this report states that Falkirk remain in a strong position. That is because Adams, who is a right-back by trade but can also play centre-back, is under contract at the club until the summer of 2026, meaning a transfer fee will need to be agreed if he was to move in January.

PCB launches bid for ambitious Pakistan Junior League

The PCB has begun an ambitious bid to launch a franchise-based T20 League for junior cricketers. To avoid a clash with the PSL economy, the proposed five-team tournament tipped to be the Pakistan Junior League (PJL) will have host cities that aren’t part of the PSL bandwagon. The inaugural edition is slated to be held in October, with all the existing six PSL franchise being given the rights to acquire a franchise. The major hurdle, though, will be in obtaining a lucrative broadcast partner and tournament sponsors. The PCB aims to pick players from the 15-19 age-group through a draft process. The board believes there is enough interest to attract a commercial sponsor, and is hopeful of furthering leveraging the property by roping in Pakistani legends as mentors and coaches.”I am thrilled and excited that after days of hard work and planning, we have today released the Expression of Interest document for the Pakistan Junior League, the first-ever international league of its kind in the world,” PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja said in a statement.”This will be a city-based league with players to be selected through a draft system involving international age-group cricketers. The PCB will create an environment of brilliance with legends and icons of the game sitting in player dug-outs in the roles of mentors and coaches, and broadcast coverage from the top draw.”Pakistan’s domestic structure has been subject to constant shuffling over the years. The pathways for age-group players have mostly been structured from the Under-15s to the U-19 level. Junior players are currently exposed to one-day and three-day tournaments as part of their development. The addition of a T20 tournament is seen as a welcome step to improve their overall development.”A young apprentice can be moulded into a genius with the right environment, which we intend to create in this format,” Ramiz said. “The PJL integrates very nicely with the PCB Junior Pathways Programme in which the PCB, through strategic partnerships, have provided contracts to 100 best cricketers who will now receive coaching from foreign experts, education at five-star institutions and monthly stipends of PKR 30,000 (USD 164 approx) each.”Initiatives like the PJL are all about creating opportunities for cricketers, identifying the talent, nurturing them into world-class players and closing the gap between domestic and international cricket.”Those interested to own teams and others keen on commercial partnerships at the event have a deadline until April 26 to submit their expression of interest.

Crystal Palace scouts spot "versatile" winger as perfect Olise replacement

Crystal Palace scouts have found the club a new winger who fits exactly what they’re looking for, according to a new report from Football Insider.

Crystal Palace transfer news

Though a couple of decent results on the bounce have lifted spirits at Selhurst Park, January reinforcements are a must if Crystal Palace are to avoid relegation come the end of the season. Ahead of the New Year, Oliver Glasner’s side have already been linked with a number of players, including Millwall midfielder Romaine Esse and Manchester City’s James McAtee, as they search for some extra attacking impetus after losing Michael Olise in the summer.

Perhaps most notably, they are, according to Graeme Bailey, eyeing a raid on Ligue 1 side Lyon for trio Rayan Cherki, Ernest Nuamah, and Sael Kumbedi.

Crystal Palace now want to use Textor link to complete 3-man transfer raid

The Eagles are eyeing an ambitious swoop.

Lyon are currently in a financial crisis and will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the season if they do not improve their situation. To do that, the seven-time French champions are likely to have to sell several players after the New Year, and Palace want to take advantage by using their link with John Textor, who has a stake in both clubs, claims Bailey.

Cherki, specifically, has been one of Lyon’s standout players this season, managing five goals and six assists in 16 games for the French side. In the past, he’s been compared to Chelsea and Belgium legend Eden Hazard.

Palace want South American star

According to Football Insider, another player purportedly on Palace’s radar ahead of January is Fluminense winger Jhon Arias. The publication claims that the Eagles’ scouts are keeping close tabs on the 27-year-old, who hit 15 goals and notched eight assists in 53 games across all competitions last season.

Arias plays primarily on the right flank, but is also capable of playing on the left, as well as through the middle. Football Insider claims the Colombian, who has been capped 27 times by his country, “fits the bill” perfectly for Palace, with the club on the lookout for a “versatile forward who can operate wide”.

Arias, who in Brazil is known as “Little Engine,” helped Fluminense lift the Copa Libertadores trophy in 2023. Speaking about the winger earlier this year, Fluminense legend Gum said: “Arias has been performing exceptionally well for some time now; he is the escape valve, a standout player. He frequently steps up.”

He added: “For quite a while now, he has been one of the most important players for Fluminense. Every player has their importance, but he brings something unique as he’s been scoring goals consistently and resolving matches.”

Meanwhile, South American football expert Tim Vikcery has described him to talkSPORT, per Rangers News, as “Mr. Perpetual Motion”.

“He’s dynamic, he can work all over the field and he’s very, very versatile. For me, he’s probably been the best player in the Fluminense side,” said Vickery.

Better than Tanaka: Leeds ace who made 116 passes was the real hero v Luton

Leeds United moved back to the top of the Championship table on Wednesday night with a comfortable win over Luton Town at Elland Road.

The Whites secured all three points in style, with a 3-0 victory, and kicked it off with an impressive, Paulo Di Canio-esque, volley from full-back Sam Byram.

Joel Piroe made it 2-0 just before half-time with a close-range poacher’s finish, before Dan James wrapped up the win with a terrific lobbed finish off the bench in the second half.

One of the team’s top performers on the night was not directly involved in any of those goals, however, as Ao Tanaka once again impressed in midfield.

Ao Tanaka's performance against Luton

The Japan international was constantly available to his teammates in the middle of the park and ended the 90 minutes with an eye-catching 114 out of 120 passes completed.

Tanaka, who had 135 touches of the ball, was always looking to take responsibility to progress the play for his side and played his passes quickly to put Luton on the back foot.

The former Fortuna Dusseldorf star was also strong out of possession. He won five of his seven ground duels, although lost his only aerial contest, to make three tackles and two interceptions to cut out Luton attacks.

These statistics illustrate how important he was to the side in and out of possession, despite not being directly involved in any major moments.

There was one Leeds player, however, who provided similar qualities on and off the ball and was even better than Tanaka – centre-back Pascal Struijk.

Pascal Struijk's performance against Luton

The Whites captain was the real hero for Daniel Farke’s side on the night with his terrific showing at the heart of the defence, as he showcased his ability on both sides of the game.

His biggest moment in the match came just after Leeds had taken the lead through Byram, as the defender incredibly cleared a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net off his own goal line, after it had been dinked over Illan Meslier

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth described it as an “acrobatic” clearance and started his post with “WOW”, which was also the collective response heard from the crowd afterward.

As you can see in the table above, Struijk also completed more passes and won more duels than Tanaka, whilst he was not dribbled past a single time by the Luton players.

These statistics show that the Dutch titan dominated the game with his defensive work and helped to control and dictate the match with his use of the ball.

Couple that with his miraculous clearance to prevent the away side from drawing level at 1-0 up and that is why he was Farke’s real hero and even better than Tanaka on Wednesday night.

The rise of Vicky Lopez: Barcelona's best teenage footballer in women's football

The 18-year-old has been crowned the winner of NXGN 2025 after excelling at club level and for the Spain national team

Jonatan Giraldez remembers, vividly, the first time he saw Vicky Lopez play. It was at Spain’s annual youth tournament for Under-12s, in which all regions participate, and his Catalonia side were up against a Madrid team led by Lopez. They lost. Why? “Because Vicky was there,” he tells GOAL, matter-of-factly. “She was the most important player at that moment in the country at under 12. She was the most promising player in Spain.”

That hype has followed Lopez around for a long time. When she was 15 years old, she made her senior debut in the Spanish top-flight for Madrid CFF, increasing the expectation. She was the star of Spain’s U17s as they reached the final of the Euros and won the World Cup in 2022, despite being the youngest player in the entire squad. At the latter, she won the Golden Ball, as she would also do at the Euros a year later. Oh, and on her 16th birthday, she was announced as a Barcelona player.

This is the sort of hype, expectation and, well, pressure that can get to top prospects in a bad way. That’s not the case with Lopez. Now 18 years old, her performances for Barcelona, the European champions, and Spain, the world champions, only show signs that she will live up to it all.

“She has the personality to cope with the pressure,” Giraldez, head coach at Barca when the teenager arrived there, says. It’s part of the reason why she ranks at the very top of the women's NXGN 2025 list.

Getty ImagesYoung star

To ask Giraldez what stood out about Lopez all those years ago is to prompt him to reel off a near-never-ending list. “I remember she was playing in the middle, but she was able to have success in one-v-one situations, shooting with the left and with the right,” he recalls. “I remember she could put crosses in with the right and with the left, at U12 level. For [senior players], that is very, very difficult, and she could do it. I remember beautiful last passes, scoring goals, beating opponents in one-v-one, one-v-two, one-v-three [situations].

“She was leading the team even in terms of personality, in terms of position. I think the capacity that she had, in possession and out of possession, showed why she was the best in that moment. It was too easy to decide that she was the best player at her age.”

That ability to do so much so well has stuck with Lopez as she has risen through the ranks. She did not just stand out at U12 level; she has continued to in each age category, even when playing up and, most significantly, even when stepping into the senior game.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesBreaking through

That first foray onto the very highest level would come on the first weekend of the 2021-22 Liga F season. Having turned 15 in the summer, Lopez was then eligible to play in the Spanish top-flight and Madrid CFF, whom she joined in 2015, did not hesitate to give her the opportunity. Aged 15 years and 41 days, she made history as the division’s youngest-ever player.

But there was a balance to strike. Lopez was incredibly talented and, in that sense, ready to take this step into the senior game. But she was also a 15-year-old girl who had no prior experience of the level, especially of its physicality. Fortunately, her coaches understood this, even if, through her eagerness, the youngster herself didn’t always.

“She was very young and in development, so I considered that, at a conditional level, we had to do a good job with her to avoid injuries, at that time and in the future,” Maria Pry, who took over at Madrid CFF midway through that 2021-22 season, tells GOAL. “She didn't understand it at first because she always wanted to play, but I made her see that the important thing in football is to get there and stay there, and for that to happen she had to arrive without discomfort or injury.”

That is not to criticise Lopez’s attitude or character, with Pry keen to stress that she was always a player who made things “very easy” for her coaches because of how she “always wants to improve and learn”. But the right guidance is necessary with youngsters. Lopez had that in Madrid, where she made eight first-team appearances during her debut campaign, as well as 18 for the B team in the second division.

Getty ImagesBlockbuster move

Despite not being in the spotlight in Liga F on a weekly basis, big clubs were watching Lopez closely. Barcelona’s interest became known to Pry midway through the 2021-22 campaign and she was not surprised whatsoever by it. “She was the best young talent there was in Spain,” she explains. Lopez’s performances at May’s U17 Euros reiterated that fact and, soon enough, she would bring her seven-year association with Madrid CFF to an end. On her 16th birthday, she was unveiled as a Barcelona player.

It was a move that put Giraldez and Lopez on the same team, with the former Catalan Federation coach now leading Barca. Having followed her development over the years, Giraldez could have hardly rated the 16-year-old more highly – and yet, working with her on a day-to-day basis, he saw “much more” from her.

“For me, the biggest surprise was about her personality, to do the same things that she was doing when she was young. She could do the same things when she was working with the best players in the world,” he explained. “That was also a big surprise for me in pre-season. Being so young, she was able to do exactly the same things as the players in the first team. Usually you have to modify and do a different part of the training because they are not ready to – but she was ready.

“And the second thing, the capacity that she had, being so young, to play with the left and with the right foot. It was a big, big surprise, better than other players that in that moment were working in the first team. I said, 'Oh my God, she's brilliant'.”

Getty ImagesAdapting impressively

Initially signed to train and play with Barcelona’s B team, which competes in the second division, Lopez would be brought into first-team training soon enough, and by the end of her first campaign in Catalonia, she had made 13 appearances – all before turning 17 years old. That was also despite the U17 World Cup, at which Lopez won the Golden Ball after helping Spain lift the title, running through the first two months of the season.

It laid a nice foundation for her to really take off the following year – and take off she did. The teenager was with the first team for the whole campaign, and her opportunities came thick and fast as Barcelona won an historic first quadruple on the women’s side. Perhaps most impressive about her explosion into the first team was not her age or how she performed her game-changing qualities on the biggest stage, but how she adapted so quickly to the club’s unique style.

Speaking to GOAL previously about the impact of Norway winger Caroline Graham Hansen, Giraldez explained how “it is not so easy for the foreign players” to grasp the timing, the rhythm and everything that is needed to be part of Barca’s play, while marvelling at how the winger herself “had it” upon arrival. When asked about Lopez’s adaptation to this, as a player from a different youth system and one still in her formative years, Giraldez accepts that she needed to improve her rhythm a little but, otherwise, it was “easy”, because of how good she is.

“Try to do the same things, but quicker,” he says, explaining what Lopez needed to improve, and did improve, in his time with her, before he left to take charge of the Washington Spirit in the summer of 2024. “She can keep improving, for sure, but she understands that if in U16s you have one second, when you are getting older, you have half the time. So, try to do the same things and try to scan before you receive the ball, advance the decision that you were going to make with the ball, make the first touch shorter to make sure that you are going to play the next pass quicker. It's all about the rhythm and I think she's getting it.”

  • Top earners in Saudi Pro League

Just like the Al Nassr wage bill, Ronaldo maintains his position at the top when it comes to the overall wage bill across the league.

Following him is his former Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema.

At third comes Al Ahli's Riyad Mahrez, while Senegalese internationals Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly acquire the final two spots respectively.

Duran doesn't make the top five yet, however, provided that the youngster continues to play for Al Nassr for a long while, he could become one of the highest-paid players in the league
