Mominul: 'You cannot shut anyone's mouth, but you can shut off your own ears'

Bangladesh captain urges team-mates to “back each other” and stay focused amid waves of public criticism

Mominul Haque has the monumental task of changing Bangladesh’s mood in and out of the dressing room. There has been an air of negativity around the team for the past two months. Nine defeats, fiery press conferences and public criticisms in the T20 World Cup was followed by a siege mentality during the T20I series against Pakistan in Dhaka.Everything from the cricket team, the board, and the overall structure and culture of Bangladesh cricket has come into question. On the eve of the first Test against Pakistan, Mominul urged his team to stop worrying about what is being said, and do what they are supposed to do, by bringing the focus back to cricket.Related

'Everyone dreams of this day' – New faces in Bangladesh Test squad gearing up for big stage

Mahmudullah: 'It's the right time to end my Test career'

“This is not the first time Bangladesh has gone through such a phase,” Mominul said. “We have overcome such situations before too. People become mentally weak, because they take outside talk seriously. My job is to bring back focus from thinking about what everyone is saying, and focusing on our job. We have to back each other. You cannot shut anyone’s mouth but I think you can shut off your own ears.”But the job at hand – playing a Test match against Pakistan – is doubly hard for Bangladesh as injuries have kept out big names like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, while Mahmudullah has retired from Tests. Taskin Ahmed, who has shown good form in his Test comeback, is also out with a finger injury he sustained during the third T20I in Dhaka.”I don’t want to call it a difficult challenge. ‘Difficult’ has a negative meaning. I don’t want to see it negatively. Tamim gives us good starts that we have often capitalised on. Shakib is two players in one. Taskin has been bowling well recently.”We are effectively missing four players. It makes my captaincy a bit more challenging but Mushfiq and I have to take on the added responsibility.”Mominul wants the focus on those who are in the squad, including Abu Jayed, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam, a bowling trio that has carried a major bulk of the attack. “Mustafizur (Rahman) hasn’t played a Test for a long time. Both Taskin (Ahmed) and Shoriful (Islam) are unfortunately injured. But we have to think about those who are in the squad.”(Abu Jayed) Rahi has been our leading wicket-taker in the World Test Championship. Ebadot is also playing Tests regularly. We also have (Mehidy Hasan) Miraz and Taijul (Islam). I have confidence in my bowlers. I think if we bowl well, we can take 20 wickets in this game,” he said.Mominul also expects Liton Das to bounce back from his T20I downturn, which cost him his place during the Pakistan series last week.”There’s a big difference between Tests and T20Is. When we keep mentioning T20s, it becomes difficult for me. I think Liton has overcome the (mental aspect) of it.”He has averaged 45-50 in Tests in the last 12 months. I think he can handle it well. He had a mental break. Everyone is supporting him.”Mominul said that Bangladesh’s next couple of Test series will offer a peak into their Test future. They were without Shakib for almost the entire 2019-21 WTC cycle, although Tamim and Mushfiqur have been heavily involved. Mahmudullah’s Test chapter has also drawn to a close, which means that Bangladesh are now forced to think about younger cricketers for these vacant spots.”Everyone wants results. Not just me. I think it is a good opportunity for the youngsters. You will get a picture of the direction our Test team is taking in this, and some of the future series. We definitely have long-term plans in Tests. We want to build slowly, and within a series or two we will know where our Test team stands.”

Rumana holds nerve as Bangladesh stun Pakistan in Women's World Cup Qualifier

In the other Group B match, Thailand continued their rise with an eight-run win over hosts Zimbabwe

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2021 • Updated on 23-Nov-2021
ScorecardHaving come out of a 21-month-long hiatus in international cricket only earlier this month, Bangladesh pulled off an upset over Pakistan on the opening day of the Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier as allrounder Rumana Ahmed closed out a tight chase of 202 in Harare with an unbeaten 44-ball 50.Bangladesh’s final-over victory hardly appeared on the horizon when they were 98 for 4, with 104 still needed off 89 balls. Rumana was on 1 off 9 at the time, and Bangladesh had just lost the set Fargana Hoque for a 90-ball 45. Then the required rate climbed to 8.9 with 10 overs to go.But in Ritu Moni’s company, Rumana unleashed a counterattack, the pair adding 61 off 59 balls. Moni hammered three back-to-back fours off Fatima Sana in the 45th over before being dismissed for a 37-ball 33.Omaima Sohail struck twice in the 46th over, leaving Bangladesh needing 41 off the last 24 balls. Then Rumana took control, carting three consecutive fours off Sohail in the 48th. With former captain Salma Khatun also chipping in with an unbeaten 18 off 13, Bangladesh got home with two balls to spare.Earlier, two wickets apiece from Moni and Nahida Akter and Khatun’s run-out of opener Ayesha Zafar left Pakistan struggling at 49 for 5 after being sent in. Had it not been for the big-hitting allrounder Nida Dar’s 111-ball 87 at No. 6 and No. 7 Aliya Riaz’s unbeaten 82-ball 61, Pakistan might have finished well below their final score of 201 for 7. The duo’s 136-run stand was the third-highest in Women’s ODIs for the sixth wicket.File photo – Opener Nattakan Chantam top-scored for Thailand•Getty Images
ScorecardThailand Women’s upward rise continued as they completed an eight-run win over hosts Zimbabwe, in the second Group B fixture of the day*.Save for opener Nattaya Boochatham, all of Thailand’s top six made 30 or more. The other opener, Natthakan Chantham, was aggressive in her approach, hitting seven fours in her 59-ball 48. With Sornnarin Tippoch, who made 40 off 76, Chantham added 94 for the second wicket, taking Thailand past 100.After the Chantham-Tippoch partnership ended, thanks to Loreen Tshuma who accounted for both batters, Nannapat Koncharoenkai, Naruemol Chaiwai and Chanida Sutthiruang made useful contributions to help steer them to 247 for 6 in 50.In response, Zimbabwe, who had debuted in ODIs last month, made a slow start, with openers Modester Mupachikwa and Sharne Mayers putting on 49 runs in 16.5 overs. No. 3 Josephine Nkomo strung a 59-run second-wicket stand with Mayers (47 off 80) before Suleeporn Laomi cut short Mayers’ stay.Nkomo’s 66-ball 56 kept Zimbabwe on track, as did captain Mary-Anne Musonda’s unbeaten 65-ball 69, but after the pair 73-run third-wicket stand, Zimbabwe stuttered and fell eight short of the target as Thailand made a strong push towards securing a Super Six berth.

West Ham likely to let £80,000-per-week star loved by Lopetegui go in 2025

West Ham United are likely to let a player who manager Julen Lopetegui really rates leave east London in 2025, coming amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of other key players in the Spaniard’s squad.

Under-fire Lopetegui could lose important West Ham players

Lopetegui sealed an all-important 2-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday, a result which bought the Irons head coach much-needed time, as he attempts to avoid the same fate of Erik ten Hag who resigned from his Red Devils post right after that game.

West Ham now preparing to axe star as Lopetegui makes "ruthless" decision

The Spaniard eased some pressure with a win over Manchester United.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 29, 2024

The win was West Ham’s second in three league games, but they went from August to early October without recording a single victory in all competitions, which is pretty abject for a side who spent around £120 million in the summer transfer window.

Lopetegui is set for a crucial next few games at the London Stadium, as his side gear up to take on Nuno Espirito Santo’s in-form Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Lopetegui is preparing to axe Lucas Paqueta from his West Ham starting eleven, as the 58-year-old becomes “ruthless” in an attempt to galvanize a decent run of form and ultimately save his job (GiveMeSport).

Thinking towards the long-term, West Ham’s manager isn’t exactly helped by reports linking key men with moves away from the club. Star forward Mohammed Kudus is attracting interest from Barcelona, as well as clubs in Saudi Arabia and rivals in the Premier League.

Losing the Ghanaian would come as a very bitter blow considering he’s arguably been their most potent attacking player this season. Meanwhile, it is believed West Ham could decide to sell striker Niclas Fullkrug as soon as January, with the summer signing’s start in England blighted by a niggling achilles tendon injury.

Carlos Soler likely to leave West Ham after loan spell

Another new arrival in Carlos Soler, who is currently at the club on a temporary spell from PSG, is also likely to leave West Ham at the end of the season.

That is according to Claret and Hugh, who state that West Ham are unlikely to sign Soler permanently, despite possessing a £27 million option to buy the Spaniard. On a reported £80,000-per-week at West Ham, this is apparently only part of his PSG salary, which is said to be “huge” and Lopetegui’s side won’t be able to cover it all.

Lopetegui is on record calling Soler a “great” player and praising his versatility, but 2024/2025 may be the only campaign we see him don Claret and Blue.

They got Hagi instead: Rangers once wanted to sign £22m star in the making

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement masterminded a 2-0 victory for his side against St Johnstone in their last game before the October international break.

His team secured all three points at Ibrox on Sunday night to head into the break on a high, after the disappointment of their 4-1 defeat to Lyon in the Europa League in Glasgow.

Vaclav Cerny, who is on loan from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg, scored a goal in either half to seal the win for his side, with his first goal being a piece of individual brilliance.

His second goal, however, was assisted by the returning Ianis Hagi, who made his first appearance of the season off the bench in the second half.

The Romania international came on at half-time for Ross McCausland and fizzed a superb pass into Cerny’s feet in the box to assist the second goal for the Gers.

Ianis Hagi for Rangers.

Unfortunately, though, Hagi was then shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge in midfield, after intervention from VAR, and will now spend the next three games on the sidelines.

That is another setback for the 25-year-old dynamo as he looks to get his career back on track, following a difficult few years due to injury issues.

Ianis Hagi's Rangers career

Rangers initially signed the attacking midfielder on loan from Belgian side Genk at the end of the January transfer window in 2020, to bolster Steven Gerrard’s side for the second half of the season.

Hagi made a fast start to life in Scotland with a return of three goals and two assists in 11 appearances in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League combined.

He did enough to convince Rangers to secure his services on a permanent deal in the summer of 2020 for a reported fee of £3m, and his form in his first full season at Ibrox suggested that it was money well spent by the Gers.

As you can see in the table above, Hagi was directly involved in 18 goals in 23 starts in the Premiership and featured in 33 of their 38 games, as the Light Blues went unbeaten and won the league under Gerrard.

The Romanian wizard then produced four goals and four assists in 27 outings in all competitions during the first half of the following campaign, before suffering a long-term knee injury in January 2022.

That injury kept him out of action for over a year and for 69 competitive matches and he is still trying to recapture his previous form for the Gers, after a return of zero goals and two assists in 22 LaLiga games for Alaves on loan last season.

Things could have been very different for the Light Blues, however, if they had landed one of their alternative targets in January 2020 – Lewis Ferguson.

Rangers' interest in Lewis Ferguson

Ahead of that January transfer window, The Scottish Sun reported that the Gers were weighing up a potential swoop to sign the Aberdeen central midfielder.

It was claimed that sporting director Ross Wilson, who has since moved on to join Nottingham Forest, had identified the Scottish whiz as a target for the Scottish giants, as a potential option for that window as well as future ones.

The outlet revealed that there was interest in Finland international Glen Kamara and that Ferguson could have been identified as a possible replacement for the ex-Arsenal man.

Lewis Ferguson

It was not, however, revealed how much Aberdeen were set to demand for the Scotland U21 international, who was valued at just €1m (£838k) by Transfermarkt at the time.

He had already established himself as a strong performer in the Premiership for the Dons, though, with a return of five goals and seven assists in 29 matches during the 2018/19 campaign.

That was not the first time they had missed out on the midfielder, though, as he had been in their academy between 2009 and 2013 before they released him ahead of the 2013/14 season, seemingly deciding that he would not develop into a first-team player for them.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Ferguson was one who slipped through the net that time and one that got away in the January transfer window in 2020, as he has soared in value since then.

Lewis Ferguson's current market value

At the time of writing (10/10/2024), Transfermarkt has his current market value at a whopping €24m (£22m), which is a staggering rise from his €1m valuation in January 2020.

18 months on from Rangers failing to sign, or opting not to, Ferguson, the Scottish midfielder secured a permanent transfer to Bologna in the summer of 2022.

The attacking midfielder hit the ground running in Italy with a return of seven goals in 32 appearances in the Italian top-flight during the 2022/23 campaign.

That came after the former Rangers academy prospect had racked up 37 goals and 23 assists in 169 games for Aberdeen during his spell with the Dons.

Rome-based journalist Alasdair Mackenzie hailed the 25-year-old star as a “sensation” and an “all-round” dynamo in midfield for Bologna, as he helped the club to secure Champions League football last term.

The former Aberdeen star, who is currently out with a knee injury, scored 13 goals in his first two seasons in the Serie A and has proven himself to be a fantastic performer at that level since his move to Bologna in the summer of 2022.

That has resulted in his market value soaring to a staggering £22m, which is significantly more than Rangers would have had to have paid for him in 2020, as the Italian team only paid £3m for him in 2022.

Fewer touches than Pope: Howe must drop Newcastle dud after 4/10 display

Newcastle United’s disappointing start to the season continued following a 2-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Chelsea. Eddie Howe’s side have now failed to win their last five games, succumbing to three defeats in that time. The Magpies currently sit in 12th in the Premier League, with just 12 points to their name.

On Sunday at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were the dominant side, scoring after 18 minutes following an early disallowed goal scored by Cole Palmer. It was Nicolas Jackson who gave the Blues the lead, converting Pedro Neto’s well-directed cross from inside the penalty area.

Newcastle equalised less than 15 minutes later, through Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker was picked out by former Chelsea academy star Lewis Hall and tapped home from inside the six-yard box completely unchallenged.

The Blues retook the lead in the second half, with Palmer getting his goal. Driving at the Magpies defence, the England international lashed a shot from just inside the area and beat Nick Pope at his near post, scoring what turned out to be the winner.

It was a disappointing day at the office for Newcastle, although there were a couple of good performances on show despite the result.

Newcastle’s best players vs. Chelsea

Perhaps the best player in a black and white striped shirt on Sunday afternoon was Hall. After spending last term on loan at the club, the 20-year-old completed a permanent move to St James’ Park for upwards of £35m over the summer.

It is fair to say that he stood out for Howe’s side, and received an 8/10 rating at fulltime from Lee Ryder, chief Newcastle writer for Chronicle Live. He explained that the young fullback ‘impressed’ throughout and put on a ‘good attacking show’ in front of his former home fans.

Another standout player for the Magpies against Chelsea was midfielder Sandro Tonali. The Italian international impressed in the midfield and received a 7/10 from Ryder, who described him as a ‘creative force’.

Isak was another player who received a commendable rating at full-time. The former Real Sociedad was also given a 7/10, although squandered a golden chance for an equaliser with the score at 2-1 despite his goal.

Whilst there were a few of Howe’s players who performed well against Enzo Maresca’s side, it was a disappointing outing for several others. That includes Miguel Almiron, who struggled to make an impact in attack.

Almiron’s stats vs. Chelsea

It has been a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign for Paraguay forward Almiron. The 30-year-old has played seven times in all competitions so far but has yet to register a goal or assist. The game in West London was his first Premier League start of the season, but he failed to impress.

The former Atlanta United forward simply did not get into the game, and his stats on Sofascore reflect just how poor of a performance it was. The winger had just 19 touches, far fewer than Pope’s 51, for instance. He failed to create a chance, lost possession six times and completed just eight passes.

Thus, it may not be a surprise that Ryder gave him a rating of just 4/10. The journalist described it as a ‘disappointing outing’, explaining that he ’caused Chelsea no real issues”. Almiron was substituted in the 68th minute as a result.

After a disappointing display against Chelsea, Howe may well decide to drop Almiron ahead of such a big run of fixtures. His impact on the game was poor and with other options in the squad, with Anthony Gordon set to return from injury, Howe could decide to rotate the Paraguayan forward out of the side ahead of a crucial run.

Newcastle have a big run of fixtures coming up, as they look to turn around their poor form. Next up in the Premier League, the Magpies face title challengers Arsenal, before a trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest awaits.

England run for the exits as Australia storm into commanding position

Hosts lit up the final session like the lightning which stopped play early

Andrew Miller17-Dec-2021The message on Adelaide’s scoreboard was unequivocal: “Severe weather approaching. Follow direction from event staff and seek shelter”. And sure enough, England’s beleaguered cricketers were only too willing to hunker down and hope the bad men go away, after a ferocious floodlit examination had ended with their Ashes hopes tumbling down the street like a wheelie-bin in a gale. After five sessions of sedate sparring at the Adelaide Oval, in which Australia’s top-order played within themselves to drag England’s largely toothless right-arm seam attack into their umpteenth spells, the contest was lit up in the final session like the lightning strike behind the bowler’s arm that forced a hasty abandonment, midway through the ninth over of Australia’s new-ball onslaught.By then, both of England’s openers had been prised from the crease – Rory Burns a victim once again of Mitchell Starc’s left-arm wiles, despite being shielded from his first delivery, before Haseeb Hameed flicked the second ball of Michael Neser’s Test career straight to mid-on to cue the most joyous scenes of celebration in the series to date.Joe Root, England’s only source of hope, then edged his second ball short of slip but endured to the early close alongside Dawid Malan, the same sidekick who had briefly inspired thoughts of salvation in that third-wicket stand at the Gabba last week. But with three full days to come, and confidence in England’s camp at rock bottom, it’s going to take something truly phenomenal to pull the team out of this latest tailspin. After resuming on an ominous 221 for 2, Australia’s eventual 473 for 9 declared was a masterclass of targeted acceleration, as a brace of sparky innings from Steven Smith and Alex Carey built on the first-day efforts of David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne – who duly brought up his sixth Test century in the first half-hour then survived England’s second wicket with a no-ball of the series before departing soon afterwards for 103.But it was the twin departures of Smith, lbw for 93, and Carey, caught at short cover on the stroke of tea for 51 – both off the tidy but largely unthreatening James Anderson – that set the stage for a contemptuous finale. With the storm encroaching on the horizon, and the clear ambition of a lengthy stint of bowling under the floodlights, Australia’s lower-order emerged after the interval with licence to plant their collective front dogs and swing for the hills. Starc was the relative anchorman, serving up a run-a-ball 39 not out with a host of long-levered swipes through the line, but it was the debutant Neser who seized the moment with unfettered glee.Mitchell Starc came out swinging•Getty Images

After so many years of waiting on the sidelines as 12th man, Neser wasn’t going to let a further 20 minutes of waiting putting him off his stride. He saw off the first two balls of the resumption with minimal fuss, and then, after picking off a brace of fours to ease into his evening’s work, it was the return of Woakes that truly signalled the cavalry charge.Hard though Woakes had toiled in the opening exchanges of this Test, he had already been identified as England’s weakest link during the latter stages of Smith’s innings, in which he had cracked two fours and a six in the space of three balls – the latter a remarkable heave over midwicket as he knelt into a fractionally short ball outside off to hoist Australia past the 350 mark. And now, as he returned for his 22nd over, Neser was primed to prove that his solitary first-class hundred was no fluke, as he climbed in Woakes’ laboured offerings for a 16-run over including a yawning hack for four through midwicket and the shot of the match to date, a veritable uppercut into the stands at extra cover.Ben Stokes ended his fun on 35 from 24 balls as Stuart Broad back-pedalled at long-off to swallow another thrash through the line, but Starc picked up the cudgels with three meaty fours in the same over, before Jhye Richardson set the seal on a free-wheeling final flourish with a murderous clout for six over midwicket – the most literal declaration of the death overs that Woakes has encountered since the T20 World Cup.One ball later, Richardson scuffed an edge to the keeper and Smith waved them in – but all told, Australia’s Nos. 8 to 10 had racked up 83 runs in their final ten overs, and Woakes’ figures had been vandalised to the tune of 54 runs in his final four overs. The irony is that England’s day had actually begun with relative purpose. With more swing on offer for the second new ball than the first, the seamer’s lengths had been notably fuller from the outset, not least the persevering Ollie Robinson, whose first ball of the day should have had Labuschagne caught-behind for 102, only for replays to show that he had over-stepped.It was another shattering blow to England’s flagging morale – their second no-ball dismissal of the series, to go with a tally of dropped catches than is now into double figures – but with impressive gumption, Robinson dusted himself down and made amends ten balls later, as Labuschagne padded up to a nipbacker to be pinned plumb in front of middle.Worryingly, however, for England’s prospects of achieving even parity in this contest, the middle part of their bowling effort was dominated by the part-time spin of Joe Root, who found purchase from the outset and no little guile, as he showed by bowling Australia’s first-Test centurion Travis Head with a superb sucker-punch, a toss-up above the eyeline that dipped at his feet and straightened into the stumps for 18.At a stroke, Root had become only the tenth visiting spinner to take a wicket at Adelaide since 2010, and of the names above him, only three have more than two scalps. Nathan Lyon, by contrast, has hoovered up 51 wickets at 26.94 in 11 visits, and assuming Australia’s seamers leave him any spoils to get stuck into, he’ll fancy his chances of adding to that tally on this particular surface, and against this particular line-up.When Stokes popped up one over later to bowl the hapless Cameron Green for 2 (taking his Test average to 1.00), England went to lunch, having arguably enjoyed the better of the session with Australia 303 for 5.It was, however, about as relative as such comparisons get, and the manner in which Australia turned up the heat before the close was a far truer reflection of the gulf between the team’s aptitudes, attitudes and applications.
