Agents of "complete" 25 y/o who’s like Nunez have reached out to Newcastle

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for a “complete” attacking player who Kylian Mbappe admires, with his agents reaching out to the club.

Latest Newcastle news

There is plenty happening at St James’ Park at the moment, although there will be relief that Eddie Howe seemingly isn’t going anywhere, with Thomas Tuchel named as England’s new manager.

Newcastle have been hit with a fresh injury blow with the news that Kieran Trippier is going to be sidelined for a number of weeks with a hamstring issue, putting pressure on Tino Livramento to stay fit and produce a consistent run of form.

Kieran Trippier

In other news, Leroy Sane has been talked about as a potentially ambitious signing, although the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United are said to be providing competition for the Bayern Munich winger’s services.

Rumours of a move for Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi are also refusing to go away, with a January transfer not out of the question for Newcastle. The Eagles held firm during the summer transfer window, but it will be interesting to see what happens if the Magpies test their resolve midway through the season.

Agents reach out to Newcastle over "complete" ace

According to The Boot Room, Newcastle are one of the clubs mentioned as suitors to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani.

The 25-year-old is not wanted by current manager Luis Enrique, who sees no future for him at the Ligue 1 champions, and his agents have reached out to the Magpies. However, they are far from the only Premier League club in this position, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa all getting a mention.

Kolo Muani for France.

Some Newcastle fans may be put off by the fact that PSG seem happy to let Kolo Muani leave, but he is a talented attacking player who has performed at the highest level, and featured in the 2022 World Cup final for France, scoring in the penalty shootout defeat to Argentina.

Meanwhile, there is also the small matter of Real Madrid superstar Mbappe rating him highly, with the world-renowned attacking ace saying of him: “He is a striker who offers different game options to our team. He is very complete and has an impressive volume of play.”

A tally of 8 goals in 25 caps for France is a solid return for Kolo Muani, and at 25, there could still be a lot more to come from him in his career. He has been statistically compared to Liverpool attacker Darwin Nunez in style by FBref, with the table below outlining their 2024/25 seasons to date:

With Callum Wilson unlikely to be at Newcastle for much longer, a new striker is needed to provide competition for Alexander Isak, and Kolo Muani could be a strong option to come in.

Dyche must finally drop Everton ace with fewer touches than Pickford

Everton’s strong run of recent form in the Premier League continued as they battled hard to draw 1-1 with Fulham at Goodison Park on Saturday.

A second-half goal from former Toffees attacker Alex Iwobi looked to be the difference between the two sides before Beto scored a fantastic header in stoppage time to secure a point.

The result extended their unbeaten run to five games without a defeat in the top-flight for Sean Dyche’s side, who had also kept back-to-back clean sheets heading into the match.

Whilst Everton picked up a solid point in the end, there were a few poor performers on the pitch for the Toffees and Jack Harrison was one of them.

Jack Harrison's performance in numbers

The former Manchester City forward, who is on loan from Leeds United, struggled badly on the flank and did not do enough to justify his selection in the starting XI.

Dyche opted to select him on the right side of the attacking set-up and Harrison did not offer much in or out of possession throughout his 68 minutes on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Harrison was incredibly lightweight off the ball, losing 83% of his duels, and offered very little at the top end of the pitch.

Zero shots on target, one key pass, and zero ‘big chances’ created illustrate his lack of impact in the final third for the Toffees, in a game that they lost by just one goal.

Everton's loan forward Jack Harrison.

Harrison also only had 29 touches of the ball – fewer than his goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (48) – and this shows that the Englishman struggled to get involved in the match before he was substituted, way before Beto’s equaliser.

Why Jack Harrison must be dropped

Dyche must now finally ditch Harrison from the starting XI as the Leeds loanee continues to underperform and underwhelm on the pitch for Everton.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The left-footed dud has now started seven of his nine appearances in the Premier League this season and, yet, is still looking for his first goal involvement, with zero goals and assists.

His return of zero goals from 0.86 xG in nine outings highlights his lack of quality as a finisher as well as his lack of movement in the final third, as he has failed to generate many high-quality openings.

The winger has been slightly more unfortunate as a creator, with zero assists from two ‘big chances’ created, but has less than 1.0 Expected Assists – on 0.84.

Out of possession, Harrison has been a weak link for the Toffees. He has lost the majority of his duels on the ground and in the air, winning 46% of his ground battles and 40% of his aerial contests.

These statistics show that the 27-year-old lightweight is a liability for Everton in the final third, with his lack of impact on the ball, and out of possession with his weak play in duels, which is why Dyche must finally drop him from the team.

Athletic Bilbao plan to sign "brilliant" Norwich ace to replace £50m Williams

As they begin to find their feet under Johannes Hoff Thorup, Norwich City could be dealt the ultimate blow with one Spanish club now turning the way of the Canaries in pursuit of replacing their Barcelona-linked star.

Norwich transfer news

Norwich took a month to get going under Thorup, but get going they have with a run of four games without defeat very much representing that improvement. The latest moment to savour in that recent run came against Hull City, as the Norfolk-based side brushed Hull City aside to win 4-0 at Carrow Road and move to within a point of early play-off contention.

What really rounded off another impressive afternoon was Kaide Gordon’s goal, with the Liverpool loanee netting his first of what he will hope to be many in a season-long spell at Carrow Road. But as the Liverpool youngster stole the headlines, transfer rumours were beginning to form regarding another star player.

As Thorup’s side continue to turn things around, any winter exits would prove to be quite the blow, though that may not stop one side from moving in. According to reports in Spain, Athletic Bilbao are now plotting a move to sign Borja Sainz from Norwich should they need to replace Nico Williams amid links to the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool.

Spain star Nico Williams

Reportedly valued at just €3m (£2.5m), Bilbao would be making quite the move by selling Williams for €60m (£50m) and then spending just £2.5m on his replacement in 2025. That said, it remains to be seen whether Norwich would budge when it comes to one of their most important players, whose valuation may have increased by the time 2025 arrives. In pursuit of eventually returning to the Premier League under Thorup, Norwich cannot afford to lose Sainz.

"Brilliant" Sainz is Norwich's key man

Since the summer departure of Jonathan Rowe, Sainz has taken responsibility to become Norwich’s most important man going forward, with seven goals and two assists in just nine Championship games so far this season highlighting that for all to see. The Spaniard even picked up the match ball when he scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 victory over Derby County last month.

It’s, therefore, no surprise that Thorup has been so full of praise for his winger, saying via Norwich Evening News: “Also he raises a good atmosphere with the crowd. He’s one of these players who can create that atmosphere in the stadium.

“He can do something on his own once in a while, and he can do brilliant shots and dribbles and stuff like this. I’ve been pleased with his pressing game, because he’s covered a lot of ground. I think he’s definitely moving in the right direction.”

One of the Championship’s best players so far this season, Norwich could yet face an uphill battle to keep hold of Sainz in 2025.

The midfielder is in the midst of arguably his best season as a pro. He has contributed 11 goals and four assists in 26 games in all competitions for the reigning Eredivisie champions. Although he would not commit to a return date, Tillman acknowledged that he was planning to return this season.

  • WHAT TILLMAN SAID

Tillman described the injury in an interview: "I immediately knew it was wrong. I thought I had to continue. I thought I could finish the match, but the following days it got worse and worse."

Pollard bemoans 'unacceptable' collapse: 'There are no words to explain it'

Kieron Pollard said it was “unacceptable” for an international team to be bowled out for 55 like his West Indies side were in their T20 World Cup opener against England in Dubai on Saturday night, but stressed that they would “bin it and move on” rather than making wholesale changes to their side or strategy.West Indies, defending champions following their triumph against the same opponents in the 2016 edition, were bundled out for the third-lowest score in men’s T20 World Cup history on a blameless surface, which Pollard described as “a good wicket to bat on”.Related

It was their third successive defeat since they arrived in the UAE, following losses in warm-up matches against Pakistan and Afghanistan, but Pollard insisted that the best attitude for his side would be to forget about the game rather than over-analysing their collapse.”There’s no words to explain it,” he said. “Being bundled out for 55 is unacceptable. We accept that – we accept the responsibility. These sorts of games, we just have to bin it and move on. I don’t think any sort of panic will come into the camp. We just need to accept it – we have to take it on our chests as big men and move on, because this is international sport.

“In the warm-up games, sometimes the intensity is a bit down with all the teams. Even though Afghanistan and Pakistan won, the intensity wasn’t still that great. For us it’s a matter of finding our straps. We haven’t batted well in the three games so far and we have to find a way to get a competitive total on the board.”West Indies opted against selecting Roston Chase, who had won a T20I call-up on the back of an excellent season for St Lucia Kings in the CPL and had appeared to be their designated ‘anchor’ in the Marlon Samuels role in the middle order. Pollard said that while Chase would be considered, he was not inclined to make “wholesale changes” on the back of a freak defeat, and said that the promotion of Dwayne Bravo to break up their run of left-handers might have worked on another night.”You can look at all sorts,” Pollard said. “Yes, Roston has got the opportunity to be selected in the squad, but we thought that this was the best XI to go out and try to win the first game for us. Just because we’ve been demolished in eight-point-something overs and made 50-odd, doesn’t mean there’s going to be wholesale changes because, as we know, when you’re not playing and you’re on the bench, your stock tends to go up a lot higher. We just need to bin it and try to come back stronger.”We lost a couple of wickets early on and expected the guys to bat a couple of overs, just knock it around and see if we could set it up for the back end but we kept losing wickets, hence the reason Bravo went up to break the trend of the left-handers, just to knock it around a bit more. It didn’t work today and these things happen. We have a plan for how we want to play this game. It didn’t come off today.”Obviously, we play a lot of cricket around the world, and this is not the first time something like this would have happened in any team or any environment. This is not something that’s new to any of us because you would have had it as you play a lot of cricket. With the experienced guys, in a situation like this, it’s easy for us to move on. We have another game in three days’ time and with this group, each game is important. It boils down to a four-game mini-tournament and we’ll take that and move on.”

Top clubs eye cut-price move for "phenomenal" £60,000-a-week Wolves star

A worrying report has emerged over the future of one of Wolves’ stars, with several top clubs now believed to be keeping a close eye on him this season.

Are Wolves too good to go down?

As it stands, Wolves are bottom of the Premier League, with just a single point after seven games. One of four sides without a win (alongside Southampton, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace), Gary O’Neil’s side have had the toughest run of fixtures in the division so far, but have failed to do much to inspire confidence at Molineux.

They have faced Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Aston Villa in their opening stint of fixtures, but even against Brentford they conceded five times to fall to a 5-3 defeat, while they were held to a 1-1 draw in a Midlands derby with Nottingham Forest.

Wolves now tracking teenage gem with "great potential" for O'Neil – report

He is seen as a star of the future.

ByBen Browning Oct 15, 2024

O’Neil is not yet under any major pressure over his future in charge of the Old Gold, but has a run of fixtures between now and the November international break that will demand an upturn in both performances and results. Things get harder before they get easier though, as they play host to reigning Champions Manchester City before games against sides around them which will be vital in O’Neil’s future at Molineux.

O’Neil’s fixtures to save his job?

Manchester City (H)

Brighton (A)

Crystal Palace (H)

Southampton (H)

Fulham (A)

Bournemouth (H)

Should they fail to turn things round in the remainder of the campaign, it could have worrying consequences.

Top clubs eyeing "phenomenal" talent

That comes via Football Insider, who report that a whole host of European clubs are keeping a close eye on Matheus Cunha as they eye up a potential cut-price deal to sign the Brazilian. Cunha, who arrived as Wolves’ record signing from Atlético Madrid in a deal worth £44m, has caught the eye during his time with the Old Gold.

Cunha

He was linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer, though he insisted he was happy at Molineux after a strong season – indeed, former teammate Max Kilman dubbed him “phenomenal”.

And former Man United, Aston Villa and West Ham scout Mick Brown explained to Football Insider that “clubs in the Premier League are already keeping an eye on his situation”.

Though he still has three years left to run on his £60,000 a week deal at Wolves, it is suggested that the Brazilian could be “one of the first out of the door” if performances continue to underwhelm. Signed for almost £50m, he could be available for far less if Wolves are forced into a sale following any potential relegation, especially given that Wolves remain close to the line over financial fair play.

Perfect for Cunha: Wolves could hire attacking 4-3-3 O'Neil replacement

The powers that be at Wolverhampton Wanderers will have manager targets in mind.

1 ByKelan Sarson Oct 9, 2024

“Every team in the league will be keeping an eye on what happens with him, and if they’re not, they should be”, Brown added. “Even the clubs at the very top of the table should be interested, and from what I’ve heard, a few of them are tracking the possibility of that deal.”

Gloucestershire appoint Dale Benkenstein as head coach

Former Proteas batter and batting coach returns to county cricket on a three-year deal

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Nov-2021Gloucestershire have appointed Dale Benkenstein, the former South Africa batter and batting coach, as head coach on a three-year contract.Benkenstein, 47, is also a former Durham captain who was head coach at Hampshire from 2014-16, helping them to reach two Vitality Blast Finals Days and secure promotion back to the top tier of the Championship in that time. He worked as Proteas batting coach from 2017-19 and has also coached South African side Dolphins. He joined Lancashire on a short-term contract as batting coach earlier this year and, most recently, Benkenstein was head coach at Mike Procter’s former school, Hilton College. He will lead Gloucestershire at least until the end of the 2024 season under a deal announced on Tuesday.”I am looking forward to working with a well-balanced squad of youth and experience and I feel the club as a whole have the ingredients to be consistently successful in all formats,” Benkenstein said. “It is exciting to be back involved in English county cricket where I have many fond memories.”Benkenstein made 300 List A and 264 first-class appearances during his 20-year career, scoring 15,962 first-class runs and more than 9,000 limited-overs runs.Born in Zimbabwe, he began his career at Natal, in South Africa, and after being named captain at the age of 22, took the side to four-day and one-day domestic titles. That led to Benkenstein making his ODI debut for South Africa against England in 1998 and he went on to play a total of 23 ODIs.He joined Durham in 2005 and captained them to their first major trophy in 2007, defeating Hampshire in the final of the Friends Provident competition. He then led Durham to back-to-back Championship titles in 2008 and 2009, the first in the club’s history. At Gloucestershire, Benkenstein will work alongside new performance director Steve Snell and assistant head coach Ian Harvey, who stepped in as interim head coach last March when Richard Dawson joined the ECB as elite performance pathway coach. Under Harvey, Gloucestershire won five of their group games and three divisional games, the most match wins for any side in this year’s Championship.Harvey said: “It’s been a huge honour for me to lead the team this season and I’m really proud of what the squads have achieved. Some of the performances in the County Championship in particular have been top class and there is no doubt these players have a bright future ahead.”I’ve been following the recruitment process with interest and there is no doubt that Dale is a great signing and I’m very excited to be working with him; I knew him as a fierce competitor on the pitch and I’m sure his style and considerable experience will produce great results for our club.”
