India could start Australia tour with white-ball cricket, not Tests

Cricket Australia and BCCI working out different options to finalise the itinerary

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Aug-2020India’s tour of Australia may begin with the limited-overs leg, followed by the four-Test series. ESPNcricinfo has learned that is one of the options on the discussion table between Cricket Australia and BCCI, but no final decision has been taken yet by both boards. The one big advantage of playing half-a-dozen white-ball matches – T20Is and ODIs – at the front end of the tour will mean no games are lost from the original schedule, after it was expected that the T20Is would be shifted to 2022 alongside the World Cup in the same format.India could fly in an enlarged squad, comprising both Test specialists and limited-overs players at the same time, and deal with the mandatory quarantine norms better too.As per the tentative schedule released by Cricket Australia in May, India’s tour of Australia would have started in October with the three-match T20I series before the T20 World Cup, which has now been pushed back to 2022.The first Test of the series was scheduled to be played in Brisbane from December 3, followed by a day-night Test in Adelaide (starting December 11), with the traditional Boxing Day Test in Melbourne (from December 26) and the New Year’s Test in Sydney (from January 3, 2021).That schedule is likely to change due to a combination of factors, one of which is the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Melbourne, which forced the city into a lockdown that is due to last until mid-September. Consequently, matches are likely to be played at reduced venues to ensure there is minimal movement and players are safe within the bubble. A Test series spaced across four cities and as many states is increasingly unlikely. The other significant factor is the lack of any free time. Immediately after the ICC deferred the 2020 T20 World Cup to next year, the BCCI announced the IPL in the UAE, with the tournament to be played between September 19 and November 10.That means players will only be able to start training from around November 26 if they are to land in Australia on November 12. Although teams travelling to England this summer, which also includes Australia’s limited-overs squad, have been able to train during quarantine, that has only been possible due to the ECB-assigned venues having on-site accommodation.Currently, Adelaide is the only venue with an on-site hotel facility, which is meant to open in September. That said, CA, the WACA and the West Australian government are working on scenarios for accommodating players near either the WACA Ground or Perth Stadium. While the option of starting the tour with four Tests has not been struck off yet, as Nick Hockley, CA’s acting chief executive said recently, there remains one clear challenge: will there be enough time for India to play practice matches? As per the original schedule, Adelaide is set to host the second Test of the series, which was also slated to be the first pink-ball Test between the two teams.India’s captain Virat Kohli had insisted that they would want to play a practice match under lights to prepare for the day-night Test. “I think it depends when the Test happens. If it’s the first Test, then obviously before the first game you play [a practice match],” Kohli had said last November after India’s maiden day-night Test, which they won against Bangladesh. “One of them can be a normal red-ball practice game, and one before the Test could be a pink-ball practice game. But if it’s the second or third Test, I would ideally like more break between the two Tests. And have a practice game before the pink-ball Test, obviously under lights. So it can’t be that before the tour you play a pink-ball practice game and then the [pink-ball] Test is actually the third.”Another key challenge for CA is the one-off Test against Afghanistan, which was pencilled in as a day-night fixture between November 21-25 in Perth. It is understood that CA communicated to Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) recently stating that Test could start from November 24. As it stands, that Test remains on paper, and if it goes ahead it will leave only four days before the first Test of the India tour scheduled at the Gabba. That is where the option of starting the India tour with limited-overs cricket appears viable. With most of the players set to come from the IPL, they would not need extra training for white-ball cricket. Also, all six matches can be played at just one venue, thus minimising the health risk.If the T20I and ODI series are wrapped up by December 10, it leaves India with the option of playing one intra-squad practice match before the first Test, which could start on December 18. With the standard three-day gap between matches, the Test series could then be wrapped up by January 15, allowing India to be back home to prepare for the home series against England, which is currently scheduled to begin in late January.Obviously, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, both boards acknowledge that the schedule must remain a set of moving parts. Ben Oliver, CA’s head of national teams, has stated there remain “challenges” about finalising the itinerary, but he remains “optimistic” about the Australia fulfilling the international schedule this summer.”We are really excited about the home Test summer, both the first Test against Afghanistan and the four scheduled against India,” Oliver said on Friday. “We are doing everything we can to get those matches played, to be honest it’s not without its challenges, there is some complexity in the schedule and our ability to move around the country but we have great support and commitment from our various partners including Afghanistan and India.”We are working through that now and everyone is committed to getting as much cricket played as possible. In the same way as this tour of England it’s with health and safety at the forefront of our thinking and the non-negotiable of our commitment to public health. We remain optimistic about delivering the full Test summer.”

Newcastle actively pursuing Gordon repeat in move for £60m "superstar"

Since the takeover by the Saudi PIF back in 2021, Newcastle United have conducted excellent business in the transfer market that has seen the club transform from relegation candidates to European hopefuls.

Eddie Howe, the man at the helm for the Magpies, has done an excellent job in creating a settled side with all the investment, with the vast majority of the signings making a huge impact at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak has undoubtedly been the best addition out of the bunch, scoring 35 times in his 67 appearances for the club since his £60m move to Tyneside from Real Sociedad.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Bruno Guimaraes has also excelled since his own big-money move to the club, with his subsequent good form seeing the Brazilian linked with a £100m move to fellow Premier League sides Manchester City and Arsenal.

However, despite the duo’s excellent form for the Magpies, one player has also taken his game to the next level, with the club needing to complete a similar deal for one talent this summer.

Newcastle interested in signing £60m talent this summer

According to Football Insider, Newcastle retain an active interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze this summer, following the Englishman’s excellent campaign at Selhurst Park.

The 25-year-old, who has contributed with 15 goals and assists in 2023/24, has been called up to the England national team for the upcoming European Championships – with Eze one of four Eagles players representing Gareth Southgate’s side.

The former QPR talent has formed an excellent partnership with fellow Magpies target Michael Olise, with the attacking midfielder potentially able to take his form over to Tyneside from London.

The report also goes on to state that Palace are set to demand big fees for their star players, with a previous article stating that Eze could be available for around £60m this summer.

Whilst it may be a pricy deal given Newcastle’s FFP situation, it would be excellent business and one that could see the club follow in the footsteps of winger Anthony Gordon.

Why Eze could be Anthony Gordon 2.0 for Newcastle

Winger Gordon joined the Magpies in a £45m deal from Everton in 2023, with the Englishman seen as a big-money investment to take the club to the next level.

The 2023/24 campaign was undoubtedly his best for Howe’s side, finishing the season with 21 goal contributions in his 35 matches in the Premier League.

However, with the club linked with a move to sign Eze this summer, the Magpies could repeat their excellent business, with the Palace midfielder producing some excellent stats that have blown Gordon out of the water.

When comparing the duo – who have been noted as similar players by FBref – Eze has produced the same number of combined goals and assists per 90 this season, whilst also averaging over one more shot in each game he’s featured.

The 25-year-old has also been more successful in finding his teammates, completing 77% of passes attempted and completing nearly 10% more take-ons than the former Everton forward.

Eze has also produced some solid defensive numbers, winning 48% of the tackles he’s entered – promoting data analyst Ben Mattinson to dub the talent as a “superstar”.

All things considered, the Palace star would be an excellent addition and one that can propel Howe’s side back into contention for European Football, with the chance to pach the playmaker from a top-flight rival in a similar manner to Gordon's arrival.

His versatility could see him feature as a box-to-box or advanced midfielder, whilst also being able to operate off either flank – with Eze able to plug any holes in the Magpies side should they have a repeat of their injury troubles.

Musiala has been linked with a €100 million (£83m/$111m) move to Manchester City but Bayern are keen to extend his contract – which runs until 2026. As the Bavarians step up their efforts to keep the 21-year-old, president Hainer has gone on a charm offensive; perhaps to convince the German international to stay a while longer.

He told German publication : “We love Jamal Musiala and it’s clear he is a once in a century footballer. Obviously, our main mission is to extend his contract and keep him at Bayern for a long time."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Musiala is proving to be one of the most exciting youngsters in Europe, if not the world, off the back of his form for Bayern and Germany. If the Bavarians are to return to their former glory, the attacking midfielder will be a key part of that. However, they may need to put together a convincing pitch to persuade him to sign a new deal – else City and others may try and pounce.

FFP solution: Newcastle must sell a star who earns 8x more than Hall

Newcastle United's injury troubles during the 2023/24 are well known, with Eddie Howe's side hit with multiple long-term absentees, subsequently missing out on any form of European football for next season.

Players such as Sven Botman and Nick Pope missed large spells of the last campaign with various issues, with Howe’s defence massively suffering as a result of their respective absences.

However, the attacking department was just as affected, with Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron both suffering their own fitness issues, restricting their minutes on the pitch.

The latter saw a drop in performance when he returned to action, failing to score a single goal in the Premier League for the Magpies in 2024, and unable to get anywhere near his tally of 11 goals from the season prior.

As a result, Howe must look to offload the Paraguayan this summer, with the club willing to part ways with the former Atlanta United attacker.

Miguel Almiron could be set to leave Newcastle this summer

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Almiron's future at Newcastle remains unclear ahead of the transfer window which opens over the coming days.

The Magpies reportedly agreed to sell Almiron to Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab during the January window, but Howe decided to keep hold of the attacker, with the 30-year-old potentially one step closer to the exit this time around.

However, the transfer guru confirmed that Newcastle are open to parting ways with the Paraguayan during the off-season, with the club needing to raise funds to avoid any form of punishment for breaking the Premier League’s FFP rules.

When delving into his weekly earnings on Tyneside, it’s no surprise that Howe and Co are willing to offload the attacker, with his wages massively more than one player who has impressed during the closing stages of 2023/24.

How much Miguel Almiron earns at Newcastle

Over the last couple of years under the Saudi PIF, the club have been able to hand out more lucrative contracts to the playing squad, allowing them to attract numerous top-quality players.

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes are just two examples, with the pair, who earn £120k-per-week and £160k-per-week respectively, as per Capology, both arriving at the club, transforming Howe’s side and pushing them back towards European football.

Almiron was another beneficiary, earning a reported £60k-per-week on Tyneside, with the forward taking home just over £3.1m per season at St James’ Park.

His subsequent weekly earnings see him pocket eight times more than £28m signing Lewis Hall, who only earns £7k-per-week despite his excellent end to the season, which saw him score his first Premier League goal in the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United.

Given Almiron’s recent injury troubles and lack of impact when called upon, Howe should look to offload him upon the opening of the transfer window, with this summer potentially the last chance to make a profit on the £20m they paid for him over five years ago.

His wage and any fee generated would go a long way towards the club’s battle to avoid an FFP punishment, with the club still in danger of a breach should they splash the cash once more this summer.

Another Toney situation: Newcastle could sell ace with "Vinicius quality"

Newcastle may have to part ways with a superb talent to avoid FFP issues.

Matt Taylor puts Gloucestershire into quarters after Ian Cockbain blitz

Ian Cockbain proved the scourge of Birmingham Bears again as Gloucestershire sealed qualification for the Vitality Blast quarter-finals with a 50-run Central Group win in Bristol.Having smashed an unbeaten 84 in the corresponding game at Edgbaston, the 33-year-old Merseysider hit 44 off just 21 balls to boost his side’s total to 173 for 6 after winning the toss.Chris Dent and Miles Hammond had led the way with an opening stand of 88, but it was Cockbain’s blistering knock that ensured an above-par score. Olly Stone was the pick of the Birmingham attack with 2 for 31.In reply, the Bears could manage only 123 all out, Matt Taylor returning 3 for 29 and Graeme van Buuren 3 for 33. Only Sam Hain offered much resistance with 43 not out.It was the home side’s sixth successive group win and they are now assured of a place in the last eight, while the Bears have some work to do.Dent wasted no time signalling Gloucestershire’s intentions, with two fours off the opening over, bowled by Tim Bresnan. Hammond was quickly into his stride too, a couple of reverse-sweeps to the boundary off Jeetan Patel taking his side’s score to 21 off two overs. The two left-handers continued to score freely and by the end of the six-over Powerplay Gloucestershire’s total was a healthy 49 without loss. That became 86 for 0 after 11 overs. But Dent was then caught and bowled off a steepler by Patel, having hit five fours in his 34-ball innings. Hammond went in the following over, well caught on the run at deep midwicket by Dom Sibley off Stone. He had faced 41 balls and notched seven boundaries. The Bears began to put a brake on the scoring rate and the 16th over was reached without a six in the Gloucestershire innings. Cockbain put that right with two in succession off Patel and was looking in prime form when caught on the deep cover boundary off Henry Brookes, having hit four sixes and three fours. From 144 for 2, Gloucestershire lost four wickets for 28 runs, but their score still looked more than competitive. Ryan Higgins was unbeaten on 21 at the end.The Bears made a poor start to their chase, losing Dom Sibley lbw in the first over, sent down by van Buuren. Soon it was 24 for 2 as Rob Yates cut a catch to point off David Payne.Adam Hose hit the first six of the innings off Matt Taylor in the fifth over, but perished tamely two balls later, pulling a catch straight to Higgins at midwicket. The next over saw Rhodes bowled trying to drive van Buuren and the Bears were in disarray at 37 for 4.Gloucestershire lost skipper Jack Taylor to a hand injury when he tried to catch a fierce drive from Sam Hain in the eighth over, Cockbain taking over the captaincy.Michael Burgess holed out to long-off as Tom Smith began to weave his customary spell at the Ashley Down Road End. His first three overs cost just 11 runs. Smith bowling in tandem with fellow left-arm spinner van Burren has been one of Gloucestershire’s strengths in the competition and when the latter bowled Tim Bresnan to make it 83 for 6 the outcome was beyond doubt.Hain did his best, with little support, but it was another impressive success for a Gloucestershire side who will be no-one’s pushovers as the tournament moves to its climax. They were all but guaranteed a spot in the last eight after this win, with Northamptonshire’s defeat against Worcestershire later in the day confirming their progress.”To win six on the bounce in the Vitality Blast is a great effort by the lads,” Cockbain said. “What we want now is to earn a home quarter-final because we know the conditions here and play them well.”It’s just one of those things that I have been able to score big twice against the Bears. Sometimes you just feel it is your day and I’ve hit the ball sweetly in both games. Today I probably got out to my sweetest hit of the lot.”We rested Benny Howell because we didn’t want him playing back-to-back games after such a long injury lay-off and Jack Taylor’s hand should be fine, so both should be available for the next game.”

Jamie Overton to join Surrey on loan from Somerset immediately

Jamie Overton will join Surrey on loan for the rest of the 2020 domestic season.Overton, who has already agreed a three-year deal to join Surrey from Somerset at the end of the current season, will now play for Surrey throughout September. He will be available for all South Group matches in the Vitality Blast and Surrey’s one remaining Bob Willis Trophy fixture against Sussex, starting on Sunday.Surrey Director of Cricket Alec Stewart thanked his Somerset counterpart, Andy Hurry, and the club for releasing Overton. “I’m looking forward to seeing Jamie play and perform in a Surrey shirt,” Stewart said.Overton, who went on loan to Northamptonshire last season, has struggled to gain opportunities in Somerset’s first-choice attack, with twin brother Craig, Lewis Gregory and Josh Davey all ahead of him in the County Championship pecking order in recent times. Somerset have also boosted their seam-bowling stocks by adding Jack Brooks and Vernon Philander, although the latter’s deal was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While Surrey have several seamers on their books, they are regularly without the Curran brothers due to international duties.Part of England’s 30-man training group ahead of the West Indies Test series, Overton has been in impressive form with bat and ball for Somerset in the Bob Willis Trophy. He claimed a five-wicket haul – and seven wickets for the match – against Glamorgan before scoring 68 and taking 4 for 26 among five wickets for the match against Northamptonshire. He then scored a maiden first class century with his 120 in Somerset’s draw with Warwickshire.Hurry said: “Jamie has requested an immediate loan move after recently agreeing a contract with Surrey CCC for next season and beyond and we have agreed to this request. I want to take this opportunity to thank Jamie for all his contributions and commitment to the club over the last 10 years and we wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”
