Kapp, Wolvaardt, Goodall rampage help SA clinch series

South Africa sealed their series against Sri Lanka with a 30-run win in the second game in Potchefstroom. Captain Chamari Atapattu powered Sri Lanka’s chase with a boundary-laden 94, but no other Sri Lanka batsman reached fifty and the visitors were bowled out for 231 in pursuit of a revised target of 262 in 47 overs. The visitors lost eight wickets for 63 runs, after a 110-run second-wicket stand. The hosts were without their captain, Dane van Niekerk, who was ruled out for three months due to a stress fracture, but in her absence, fifties for Laura Wolvaardt, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp – who slammed four sixes in her 34-ball 69 – set up an imposing total of 268 for 7.Wolvaardt had been out for a golden duck in the first match, but this time around she struck seven boundaries inside the Powerplay and raised a 49-ball fifty in the 15th over. She added 71 with Andrie Steyn, who was a little more circumspect in compiling her 24. After Wolvaardt fell to an edge through to wicketkeeper Prasadani Weerakkody, Lara Goodall kept the scoreboard ticking despite Sri Lanka’s repeated strikes to dent the middle order.Goodall reached 52 – her maiden ODI fifty – before she became Kavisha Dilhari’s second victim with the score at 183 for 6 in the 42nd over. Her dismissal brought Kapp and Faye Tunnicliffe together, and they added a rapid 85 for the seventh wicket that put South Africa well on top. While Tunnicliffe focused on turning the strike over, Kapp’s first six brought up South Africa’s 200 in the 46th over. In the last five overs of the innings, the hosts added a whopping 69 runs, with Kapp and Tunnicliffe combining to take 20 off a single over from Inoka Ranaweera.Sri Lanka needed a strong start to keep their chase on track, and although Atapattu was immediately into her groove, Weerakkody fell almost immediately, slicing a catch to Mignon du Preez at backward point off Kapp in the fourth over. Rain washed over the ground soon after, forcing an adjustment to Sri Lanka’s target and the overs they would have to reach it.Atapattu’s response was to go on the offensive, and two fours and a six in Masabata Klaas’ first over took her racing into the 40s. Another boundary off Tumi Sekhukhune took her to a 53-ball fifty in the 16th over, the Sri Lankan captain smashing 18 runs off the medium pacer’s next over to raise her team’s 100.Atapattu took her stand with Anushka Sanjeewani beyond 100 with her third six, off Nadine de Klerk, and was in sight of what would have been her fifth ODI hundred when she fell against the run of play, edging a swipe at stand-in captain Sune Luus’ legspin. Her dismissal knocked some of the fight out of Sri Lanka, and when Sanjeewani and Shashikala Siriwardene fell in successive deliveries soon afterwards, the visitors really lost their way. A required rate that had been kept in check soon ballooned to more than a run a ball, and Sri Lanka were left needing 69 from the last ten overs of their innings with five wickets still standing.Wolvaardt followed her innings with the bat up with an excellent performance in the field, effecting two run-outs to tighten South Africa’s grip and also holding a catch at deep midwicket to get rid of Nilakshi de Silva. With the run rate rapidly inflating, two further run-outs deepened Sri Lanka’s woes, and Shabnim Ismail removed a Dilscooping Dilhari in the final over of the innings to bring the match to an end, and seal the series win.

The stalled negotiations signal a potential opportunity for Washington Spirit and the WSL club to swoop in and make enticing offers to the player. It is believed that Spirit are ready to begin negotiations with her representatives for a potential transfer of the player to strengthen their attack.

Caldentey has been in good form this season with seven goals and eight assists in 25 matches in Liga F for Barcelona. She has won five league titles and Spanish Cups each, three Spanish Super Cups and two Champions League trophies with the Catalan club.

Caldentey's future hangs in the balance as it remains to be seen if she ends up crossing the Atlantic to play for Spirit. However, before her potential departure, she can finish off her stint in Spain on a high by winning the treble with the Blaugranas. Barcelona look destined to win Liga F as they have a 12-point advantage over Real Madrid and can lift the Copa de la Reina if they beat Sociedad on May 18. Barca might also conquer Europe if they get the better of Lyon in the Champions League final on May 25.

Southampton have already found a perfect Ward-Prowse replacement

There was a sense of inevitability in the air at Southampton that James Ward-Prowse would move from the Saints, especially in the wake of the club's relegation to the Championship.

Ward-Prowse had almost become synonymous with St Mary's, a one-club man who could singlehandedly turn a game around for his side with a bit of flair – the 29-year-old making 410 appearances for the club in total, scoring 55 times.

West Ham United would swoop in and sign the Saints star for £30m in the summer, a transfer deal that could have completely derailed Southampton's attempts to win promotion straight back to the Premier League.

However, Russell Martin's men – 19 games into the second tier season – aren't feeling the after-effects of Ward-Prowse's exit whatsoever with this new central midfield gem slotting into the line-up seamlessly and replacing the former Saints number eight with ease.

Indeed, Flynn Downes has become an instant fan favourite at St Mary's, Southampton winning the deal to offload Ward-Prowse to the Hammers by gaining Downes on loan from the London Stadium for the season.

Even when the former Swansea City man has a relatively quiet game – as was the case in Southampton's last match versus Cardiff City – Downes shows off his Premier League-level qualities.

Flynn Downes' game vs Cardiff in numbers

Downes has been instrumental in the centre of the park for his new employers, Martin's possession-heavy style of football dictates that a midfielder such as the 24-year-old is constantly on the ball and present.

Against Cardiff last match, Downes amassed an astounding 110 touches in the centre of a midfield trio as per Sofascore alongside Stuart Armstrong and Shea Charles.

Flynn Downes for West Ham

Yet, only two of the West Ham loanee's passes on the day were key with many of his touches and subsequent passes not resulting in a move flickering into life to unlock the Cardiff defence. Rather, Downes just ensured his side kept their fair share of the ball – Martin's men having 64% of the possession against the Bluebirds.

Charles and Armstrong were far more involved, leading to Downes picking up an average 6.8 Sofascore rating for his efforts in the uneventful and straightforward 2-0 win.

Downes does, however, shine and lead from the front for the Saints more times than not, the 24-year-old's style of play baring similarities to Ward-Prowse during his hay day on the South Coast.

Flynn Downes' statistics this season

The midfielder is unerringly composed on the ball, completing 71.9 accurate passes per 90 minutes this season in the Championship.

Labelled as an "outstanding" footballer by his manager after joining the club, he's also 'really brave' with or without the ball at his feet – Martin managing Downes at Swansea before taking the reins at Southampton – the 24-year-old is proving to be just that for the promotion chasers.

The Hammers loanee is always involved in passing moves and constantly alert, Downes does only have one assist to date but the Saints number four is always available to receive a pass to play someone into space.

Without Downes in the middle of the park, the Saints would arguably lose the glue keeping everything together and ticking over.

The midfield maestro will continue showing off his silky skills on the St Mary's turf, hoping that he can help his short-term employers win promotion back up to the top flight.

Downes will also want to get in on the act going forward by breaking his Southampton goalscoring duck, but the ex-Swans man isn't renowned for his goalscoring prowess with only four goals scored in his professional career to date.

Still, the understated midfield gem will continue plugging away as a key figure for a resurgent and new Southampton team succeeding without Ward-Prowse.

Ranked: Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford & the 10 players Man Utd should sell this summer to usher in much-needed squad overhaul

The club's new overlords INEOS are planning a massive revamp of the squad in this summer – but who should they prioritise getting rid of?

Manchester United are close to bidding farewell to one of their worst ever seasons in the modern era but soon they will be looking towards their next big battle, the one that takes place in the transfer market.

After a harrowing campaign in which the Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League group stage and failed miserably to mount a challenge to finish in the top four, it has become glaringly obvious that several players are no longer up to the standards United should aim for.

And while standards had been allowed to slip by a board that often took its eye off the ball, the club's new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues will not stand for it any longer. It was reported last week that United are ready to listen to offers for almost the entire squad, with only young stars Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo protected from the clear-out.

It is also believed that Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez and Andre Onana are extremely unlikely to leave, but every other player, including Marcus Rashford, could potentially be up for sale.

Here are the players United should be prioritising getting rid of when the transfer window opens in June…

    10Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen was a transfer that made a lot of sense at the time, a technically adept and highly experienced player on a free transfer. He contributed a lot last season, even if he did tire in games and rarely lasted 90 minutes.

He has struggled much more in his second campaign at Old Trafford and despite remaining fit since the turn of the year, he has started just two games in all competitions since a concerning performance against Tottenham. The Dane has only one year left on his contract and even a free transfer would make sense, given how little Ten Hag has trusted him recently.

    9Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bissaka's time at United can roughly be summed up in three stages. At first he looked to be a costly mistake due to his £50m ($62m) transfer fee and the fact he contributed very little in an attacking sense. But then last year he rediscovered his knack for one-v-one defending and usurped Diogo Dalot as the team's first-choice right-back.

But this season Dalot has re-established himself as Ten Hag's best right-sided defender and Wan-Bissaka has looked increasingly vulnerable, almost costing United their place in the FA Cup final with a disastrous display against Coventry.

The club triggered his one-year contract extension clause in January and his new deal expires in 2025. It means United have one more chance to recover some of the money they spent on him and they need to take it.

    8Anthony Martial

The Frenchman has turned into a laughing stock in the last couple of years, incapable of staying fit for even a handful of games and often struggling to make any impact when he does play, except to rile the fans.

The good news for United is that this one takes care of itself, as Martial's contract with the club expires in June, bringing his at best disappointing and at worst exasperating time at the club to an end.

    7Sofyan Amrabat

Perhaps United should have realised that the Morocco international was not up to Premier League standard when they faced barely any competition to sign him and were able to negotiate a loan with Fiorentina. He has looked woefully off the pace in most games and Ten Hag has clearly noticed, starting him just once in all competitions in 2024.

United paid Fiorentina a loan fee of €10m (£8.5m), which includes a purchase option set at €25m (£21m). They would be fools to trigger it and at least this transfer can be written off as a mistake that only haunts them for one year, unlike some other players they tied down to long contracts.

New update shared on what Moyes has told friends about his West Ham future

David Moyes’ long-term future at West Ham appears to be in the balance, and there has now been a new update shared by one reporter.

Latest David Moyes update at West Ham

The Hammers are currently in the top half of the Premier League and have also qualified for the last 16 of the Europa League this season following a historic Europa Conference League triumph back in May. However, there are still doubts over whether Moyes will be in charge of the club next season, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign. Journalist Toby Cudworth addressed Moyes’ contract situation last month, saying:

“Our understanding is that West Ham have been looking at future replacements for him. He won the Conference League in June, has one year left on his contract, but there’s been no engagement over a new contract. One thing we can say with near-certainty, David Moyes is not going to be signing an extension at West Ham barring a miracle.”

West Ham manager David Moyes

Now, Football Insider reporter Wayne Veysey shared a new development regarding Moyes and what he has told those close to him over his West Ham future. He said in the last 48 hours:

“David Moyes has told friends he does not expect to be manager of West Ham next season, sources have told Football Insider. The Scotsman’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign and he has not held talks with the club regarding a new deal.

“It is believed that he has told his camp that he “won’t be at West Ham next year” as he has had no signals from club chiefs they want him long-term.”

West Ham manager rumours

Moyes has enjoyed plenty of success during his second stint in charge, most notably in Europe, but the club may feel that 2024 is the perfect chance to freshen things up.

If these claims prove accurate, it appears as if the Hammers could be on the search for a new manager in 2024, and there has already been a candidate backed to take over from the Scot at the London Stadium. Former Wolves and Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui is one name floating around in the media, with The Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gil saying earlier this month:

“The only name that’s been mentioned to me is Julen Lopetegui, who we know wants to return to the Premier League. But that picture could totally change closer to the end of the season.”

As Gil claims, a lot can change between now and May, but with Moyes seemingly resigned to his fate of exiting West Ham come the end of the season, you’d expect Hammers officials will be working behind the scenes over the coming months in regards to his successor.

Tottenham eyeing transfer move to sign Ferran Torres but not in January

As impressive as Tottenham Hotspur have been under Ange Postecoglou, the boss must ensure that this is only the start of his improvements in North London as he looks to take them back into the Champions League. The Lilywhites currently sit inside the Premier League's top four, albeit having played an extra game than Manchester City, and will be aiming to show similar form in the second half of the campaign.

As the January transfer window approaches, Spurs may well start to think about further reinforcements for Postecoglou and perhaps ones that could cement their place among England's elite once more. However, one particular target is already being lined up for next summer.

Spurs transfer news

Postecoglou is certainly prepared for a busy window next month, having recently told Sky Sports when asked if January is coming at a good time:

"Yeah, if we get the outcomes it will be. But it's going to be a challenging month for us because you're talking about three players in Pape, Biss and Sonny who have been very important to what we're trying to build. We've got Maddison, Van de Ven and Rodrigo Bentancur – really significant players who are missing – so fingers crossed the guys we've got at the moment stay healthy through that period. It's going to be a challenging period and January is always a difficult transfer window to get things done particularly quickly, so I think we're preparing ourselves for that."

According to reports in Spain, Ferran Torres is one of the options at the top of Spurs' transfer wishlist and is open to a change of scenery after falling down the pecking order at Barcelona. Given that Spurs are yet to replace record goalscorer Harry Kane too, Torres could be an ideal option to turn to, although he is a target for next summer.

"Brilliant" Torres can provide Son cover

Without Kane these days as well, it's difficult to identify a player who could step up for the Lilywhites. Instead, however, they could turn to the transfer market and Torres. The former Manchester City forward and two-time Premier League winner can play both out wide and in the striker role, potentially handing those in North London an ideal Heung-min Son replacement.

ferran-torres-barcelona-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-vinicius-jr

Earning the praise of Pep Guardiola whilst at City, the Spaniard said:

"Not just this evening, of course this evening was important, but his first season in England and his numbers are exceptional. He came as a winger, but he has to think about (being) a striker. When Sergio, Gabriel were out, he was there. He scored against Leeds and Crystal Palace. He didn't have many minutes, but when he played, he had a sense of goal.

"Yeah, he can be [a No 9]. We will use him, we used him and he was brilliant. His rhythm, especially defensively he has improved a lot. The game at Palace, he makes a turn [in his season] – so good. The movement he makes as a striker, for the [third] goal, it hits the bar and where it goes, he knew it."

Whilst Torres' goals total of just three this season makes for poor reading, he hasn't been helped by Barcelona manager Xavi, who has granted the forward just seven starts in La Liga. With that said, both Spurs and Torres could solve each of their problems in 2024, so it could be one to watch over the coming months.

'We never expected to do it' – Karunaratne on a high after historic win

The culture of togetherness within the squad was the main reason for the upturn in fortunes, Sri Lanka’s captain has said

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Feb-2019Sri Lanka have made history in South Africa, becoming only the third team overall – after England and Australia – and the first from Asia to breach the fortress in a Test series. It came against all calculations. After all, Sri Lanka have had very few reasons to cheer on the cricket field – or off it, for that matter – in recent months. Not to forget they had a new captain in the form of Dimuth Karunaratne for the series, with Dinesh Chandimal getting the axe after two huge defeats in Australia. The sword was hanging over coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s head too, and more than one key player picked up injuries and dropped out.”Beating South Africa two-nil isn’t easy. When we came here, we were underdogs. But we learnt a lot of things on previous tours, and the players executed really well in these conditions. That’s why we are here. It’s a great achievement for us,” Karunaratne gushed after Kusal Mendis and Oshada Fernando struck unbeaten half-centuries to take Sri Lanka to an eight-wicket win in Port Elizabeth for a series sweep.

We had a few discussions, what I expect, what the management expects, and after that, we kept hanging together, we ate dinner together, we were togetherDIMUTH KARUNARATNE

Just how big was the result? Karunaratne admitted that even when, at various stages, there were words of positivity and hope thrown about in the dressing room, “we didn’t take that seriously”.”I think we never expected to do it,” he said. “But when we started winning, we had the faith. We wanted to compete. Winning is the ultimate goal, but if we do the right things, the result will definitely be good for us. Most of the guys said that but we didn’t take that seriously, because when we have additional pressure, it’s not easy.”Cut to Saturday, which started with Sri Lanka 60 for 2 in their chase of 197, and “we said when you go out there, you play your natural game; if you can score, if you can hit over the fielder, go for it. That’s what in the first hour Mendis and Oshada did … when we played like that, South Africa were on the back foot.”Kasun Rajitha is pumped up•Getty ImagesKarunaratne stressed on “keep smiling” and “keep enjoying” as the main mantras for the players. After over two months on the road – with very little joy – the words proved useful.”The tour (in New Zealand) started in December, so we are out of the country for three months. If you don’t enjoy and if you can’t free your mind, you can’t give your best,” Karunaratne said. “I know the talent we have, so we wanted to get those out. If you’re enjoying yourself, you can definitely get those out.”With Mendis, who hasn’t had his best run with the bat while on the road, the new captain had to work extra hard. “He was really feeling the pressure, he was thinking about the social media and everything,” Karunaratne said. “But I said, ‘When you get a good knock, you’ll forget about it and we’ll keep supporting you. It’s high time you do it.’ And he did it for me.”Mendis and Oshada pulled it off in the end, but Sri Lanka had many other heroes in Port Elizabeth after Kusal Perera had done it all almost single-handedly in the first Test in Durban.South Africa only scored 222 and 128, and that was because the pace trio of Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando and Kasun Rajitha picked up 13 wickets between them and Dhananjaya de Silva, the lone spinner after Lasith Embuldeniya dislocated his left thumb, provided crucial breakthroughs in conditions not too suited to his brand of offspin. And no, comments from South Africans like Keshav Maharaj didn’t serve to spur the players on, according to the new captain, who now looks set to hold the job at least for the foreseeable future.”We had a few discussions, what I expect, what the management expects, and after that, we kept hanging together, we ate dinner together, we were together,” he said of the team culture he has tried to put in place. “When you make that culture, when you come overseas, only the squad will stay here … I wanted them to give their best and stay in the game all the time. They enjoyed a lot, still they are enjoying. It’s really a great feeling, when we are playing together, and my job becomes easier.”When we came here, no one thought we can win a series here. But if we back ourselves, we can win those matches. We wanted to do something good for the team, for the Sri Lankan fans. End of the day, we did a really good job.”

Praticamente rebaixado, Vasco coleciona recordes negativos

E os números do time ainda pioram o cenário.

Atualmente, o time tem 38.
