Fellows 2.0: West Brom could fix Wallace blow by unleashing "bright" teen

West Bromwich Albion supporters will head to Leeds United this coming weekend hopeful that their side can disrupt the flow of the table-topping Whites.

It will be easier said than done, however, with Daniel Farke’s men now ridiculously unbeaten in Championship action across a mammoth 16-game stretch, whilst Tony Mowbray’s Baggies continue to blow hot and cold with only two victories picked up themselves from their last five league outings.

To further add to the West Brom unease, the experienced figure of Jed Wallace is now sidelined through injury, but the playoff-chasers did manage fine without him in their last 2-0 win over Oxford United.

West Brom dealing with Wallace's injury

Indeed, although Wallace had found his minutes limited under the previous regime, he had picked up a goal and an assist under Mowbray in league action before this injury setback occurred.

Still, his absence wasn’t really felt in the 2-0 victory over the U’s, as other experienced heads such as Alex Mowatt took control by bagging the opener, before the equally seasoned John Swift made sure of the three points at the death.

Moreover, Tammer Bany exploded into life in a Baggies strip from off the bench, with the former Randers FC man a revelation late on down the left channel when teeing up Swift for his game-clinching strike.

But, it’s down the right – where Wallace primarily plays – where the promotion hopefuls didn’t look quite as devastating when Grady Diangana was given a late run-out, with the ex-West Ham United attacker managing just five lacklustre touches.

Therefore, with Wallace missing for several weeks, it could be an apt moment for Mowbray to gamble with this Tom Fellows understudy, who could well become the club’s next on-fire homegrown winger if given time.

West Brom's next Fellows

West Brom, of course, struck gold when gifting Fellows more regular senior opportunities just last season, with the constantly improving 21-year-old midfielder up to a breathtaking 11 assists this campaign in the second tier.

Therefore, the Baggies could hope history repeats itself with 19-year-old Akeel Higgins potentially being bumped up to the first team fold soon, having excited those at the Hawthorns already with his sublime U21 showings.

This season so far, Higgins has picked up one singular goal in Premier League 2 action – which was this stunning solo strike earlier in February – but he also has three assists next to his name to show off his unselfish approach when bursting forward, with an ambition to rival Fellows’ creativity if he is gifted a senior shot by Mowbray.

After all, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for the 61-year-old to throw the starlet into games moving forward, considering he worked alongside some top young assets in the form of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham when still at the reins of Sunderland.

Looking at the table above, it does feel as if Higgins is overdue his moment in the first-team spotlight, with Fellows only needing 61 games for both the U18s and U21s before being unleashed into the senior picture.

Lauded as a “bright” prospect for the future by youth coach Richard Beale back in 2022, time will only tell if he can pass any forthcoming first team assessments with flying colours, having been gifted his senior debut already by Corberan last season.

Alongside Robertson: Liverpool’s "explosive" ace also sustains new injury

Liverpool could be set to lose the services of another one of their squad members to injury alongside Andrew Robertson, if a new update is to be believed.

Who is currently injured at Liverpool?

The Reds have Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Caoimhin Kelleher on the sidelines as it stands, with Jurgen Klopp’s latest blow coming in the form of Robertson, who had to withdraw from international duty after sustaining a serious looking shoulder injury.

As well as those, Curtis Jones still won’t be available for selection for Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton because he will be serving the second of his three-game suspension following his previous red card, and now another player is likely to be missing.

At Anfield, Ben Doak has made zero starts and just one substitute appearance this season in the Premier League (WhoScored – Doak statistics), but regardless of his lack of first-team minutes, he still received a call-up to represent his nation over the past fortnight having impressed in the Europa league.

Scotland’s youth international, however, was forced to leave his squad having suffered a fitness setback meaning that he returned to Melwood to undergo further assessment, and whilst the extent of the right-winger’s problem still remains to be seen, the 17-year-old isn’t likely to be staging his comeback anytime soon.

Ben Doak injury update

According to The Liverpool Echo, who have shared an injury update on Ben Doak, Klopp isn’t expected to have the forward at his disposal for this weekend’s highly-anticipated encounter vs Everton, further damaging the manager's depth:

Ben Doak has provided Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp with another potential injury headache ahead of Saturday's Merseyside derby. Liverpool are waiting to discover the nature and extent of the damage, but the uncertainty is another unwanted concern for Klopp as he grapples with availability issues for the weekend visit of Everton.”

Liverpool forward Ben Doak.

How good is Ben Doak?

Whilst Doak isn’t a regular senior feature for Liverpool at this moment in time, he’s previously been dubbed an “explosive” attacker by football talent scout Jacek Kulig for how prolific he can be in the final third, which he’s shown throughout his career.

The Dalry native, who pockets £180-per-week (Liverpool salaries), has posted 19 contributions, 11 goals and eight assists, in 37 appearances since first bursting onto the scene, which highlights the threat he poses to an opposition’s backline (Transfermarkt – Doak statistics).

Sponsored by Adidas, the forward is also a versatile operator having been deployed in four different positions over the pitch, including in three roles across the frontline and even slightly deeper in the midfield, but this versatility is another quality that the boss is likely to be missing.

Therefore, Doak’s absence will come as a blow to Klopp even though he isn’t a guaranteed starter, especially with the list of other absentees meaning that the manager could be limited in his options, so all parties will be hoping that the academy graduate’s injury isn’t too bad so that he can return to the pitch as soon as possible.

The midfielder was initially deemed fit to play by the club's staff ahead of their 4-3 quarter-final victory at Old Trafford on Sunday. However, he was soon ruled out as United confirmed he had sustained a "muscle injury", and he has since withdrawn from the Brazil squad for the upcoming friendly against England.

During training the day before the showdown against the Reds, the midfielder felt pain in his hamstring – the same injury that had ruled him out for almost three months earlier in the season. After United's doctors failed to pick up on it, reports he consulted his own doctor in Barcelona who diagnosed him with a minor injury that could become a bigger problem.

Despite pulling out of the national team, the 32-year-old travelled to London to meet his Brazil team-mates ahead of their friendly against England. United will hope that he recovers well before they return to Premier League action after the international period.

Arsenal still eyeing move to sign "great" player for Arteta; scouts sent

Credit where it's due, Arsenal have once again got off to a flying start in the Premier League to put to bed any doubts that last season could have been a one off. Mikel Arteta has transformed the Gunners from lost failures into serious title challengers – the job that the Spaniard has done so far has been impressive.

The North London side have also improved off the pitch, with their transfer business ending in success more often than not, putting to bed the era of transfer flops that included the likes of Nicolas Pepe. Instead, this is the era of impactful additions, and that could include the potential arrival of one particular Turkish Super Lig player.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners spent well in the summer, refusing to take their foot off the gas ahead of their return to the Champions League this season. In the end, Arsenal's summer spending reached as much as the €235m (£205m) mark, and Arteta has been rewarded for his club's spending ever since.

With a long title race ahead, too, Arsenal could yet return to the transfer market when the January window opens, with the latest Sacha Boey transfer news suggesting that he could be among their targets. According to Fotospor, the Gunners have sent scouts to watch the right-back in Galatasaray's recent defeat over Besiktas.

Boey, of course, was the subject of Arsenal transfer interest throughout the summer, with reports in Turkey claiming that the Premier League giants made a £12m bid for the full-back, who had an asking price of £17m, leaving Arsenal to pursue and seal a deal for Timber instead. As Timber recovers from an ACL injury, however, the Gunners may need another right-back, which has seemingly turned their attention back to Galatasaray and Boey.

Sacha Boey's stats

So far this season, Boey's stats prove just how important he is for Galatasaray these days. The 23-year-old has started in every single game for Okan Buruk's side this season, who have even got a win at Old Trafford against Manchester United under their belt.

It's no surprise, given his importance, that Boey has been at the centre of praise during his time in Turkey, including from former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna, who said: "Galatasaray’s Sacha Boey is a player I really like. I think he will fit perfectly into Arsenal. As a right-back too, I have to say I think he’s great. I’m sure many clubs have Sacha Boey in mind.“There is a contract to sign.”

Whilst Timber remains on the sideline, it could be a wise move from Arteta to secure another right-back option, creating plenty of competition for both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu. As the Champions League fixtures begin to come thick and fast, too, and injuries inevitably fall the way of those at The Emirates, the greater squad depth that Arsenal have, the better that they may cope.

TABELA
> Veja classificação e simulador do Brasileirão clicando aqui

West Ham: Irons now "ready to buy" £25m "soldier" for Moyes in January

West Ham United are now reportedly "ready to buy" a £25m "soldier" for manager David Moyes in January, after telling his club they're very interested.

Who will West Ham sign in January?

The Hammers, as highlighted by their dismal 4-1 defeat away to Aston Villa on Sunday, could be in need of some fresh faces to bolster Moyes' squad. While West Ham's start to the Premier League campaign has been promising overall, remaining unbeaten in Europe on a record-breaking 17-game run, they're lacking significant depth in certain areas; namely the striker, full-back central defensive positions.

West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Doubts surrounding the futures of both Nayed Aguerd and Kurt Zouma hints that West Ham could be left even more short at centre-back, as the defensive duo allegedly attract interest from the Middle East. A plethora of Moyes' squad will also be out of contract next summer, including full-back aces Vladimir Coufal, Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell; making the signing of a new one pretty high up on the priority list.

Striker Danny Ings appears to have done little to earn Moyes' trust, so Michail Antonio is currently being heavily relied upon going forward. This has lead to reports that West Ham are eyeing up new options for 2024, including Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy.

West Ham – Trevoh Chalobah transfer update

The east Londoners can be fragile at the back on occasion; displaying carelessness during their 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Villa. Moyes, as per recent reports, is eager to sign a new centre-back for West Ham if one of Aguerd or Zouma leave – and Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah is now seemingly attracting his attention.

Trevoh Chalobah

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that the defender is now "90%" likely to leave in the winter window, saying this on a recent Daily Briefing.

"I can confirm now that my information is that he will leave Chelsea in January," wrote Romano.

"You may remember that Chelsea were prepared to let him go to Nottingham Forest in the final hours of the transfer window, only for the player to say no. Bayern Munich were also interested in Chalobah and their interest remains, while there are now other clubs as well. Chalobah loves Chelsea but he wants to play, so he is prepared to go. A January exit now looks 90% guaranteed."

Now, following these rumours, an interesting report from Calciomercato.it claims West Ham are "ready to buy" the 25-year-old in January and have already informed Chelsea that they're "strongly interested" along with Tottenham. Sharing a Chalobah transfer update, the outlet reports he has a host of other sides on his trail; including the likes of Bayern Munich, Roma and Juventus.

The Englishman, who Romano says could cost around £25 million, has been praised by the likes of Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge in past seasons.

"Very professional, very determined. He’s an impressive character, very focused on his football," said Potter last year to the Chelsea website.

"He’s a bit of a soldier. He’s played in all the games, we’re having some problems in terms of availability for players, but he’s stood up, stood in and he’s performing at a really good level."

Henry Brookes ruled out for season with back injury

Henry Brookes, the highly-rated 18-year-old Warwickshire pace bowler, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a stress fracture of his spine.Brookes had recently earned a maiden call-up to the England Lions squad during the tri-series involving West Indies A and India A and also spent time around the full one-day squad. He had taken seven wickets in five T20 Blast matches having bagged 21 in five Championship outings and also claimed nine in the Royal London Cup.Brookes will now have a period of rehabilitation with the aim that he will return to full training during the off-season.”Henry has been outstanding for us this year across all three forms of the game, so we’re obviously very disappointed to lose him for the remainder of our 2018 campaign,” Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s sport director, said.”He’s an incredibly strong character for an 18-year-old and, whilst he is very disappointed to be out of action, he will soon be back working hard to ensure that he comes back stronger in the 2019 season.”

"Unbelievable" manager will "definitely" get interview at Rangers – pundit

Rangers have a host of individuals in the conversation to become their next manager, and one of those will "definitely" be interviewed for the job, according to former player Michael Bridges.

Which managers are Rangers linked with?

It has been a busy few days at Ibrox, following the dismissal of Michael Beale on Sunday evening, as the Gers look to bring in a superior successor to the 43-year-old. Beale had his moments as Rangers boss, but ultimately, things turned sour in the early weeks and months of this season, and it was clear that a change was needed.

There are so many people who have already emerged as potential options as the Gers' next boss, with former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter an ambitious choice, but one that is unlikely to materialise. The likes of Kevin Muscat, Pascal Jansen and Frank Lampard are also thought to be in the mix.

Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Which candidate will be interviewed for Rangers job?

Speaking to The Glasgow Times, Bridges claimed that Muscat would earn himself an interview for the vacant manager's job at Rangers, seeing him as a standout option to come in and replace Beale:

"He's doing unbelievable things at Yokohama F. Marinos, he's followed Ange Postecoglou from Melbourne Victory. He went to Japan. He's continued the trend there. Obviously what Ange Postecoglou did at Celtic winning the treble last season and then going to the Premier League.

"There's a lot of Aussie coaches that have been given the green light where they're on the other clubs’ radars and boards are thinking, hang on, the Australian coaches have got so much to offer.

"So I wouldn't be surprised to see Muscat at Rangers. He'll definitely be getting interviewed for it, no doubt, or they'll be trying to get hold of him. It would be very interesting to see him go back to a club where he played his football. So he's also got the fans, they've seen him play, they know how much of an animal he was on the park.

"But I think they'll be very disappointed when they see him today, how placid he is now as a coach and how much of a nice guy he is now. But he did a great job for them.So watch this space. I wouldn't be surprised if we could see him in the Scottish Premiership."

While Muscat hasn't proven himself in European football yet, there are parallels to be drawn with Ange Postecoglou, who managed Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan before Muscat, and going on to impress at both Celtic and Tottenham.

Muscat has won two league titles already in his managerial career – one with Melbourne Victory and the other with current club Yokohama – and it would arguably be snobbish to assume that he wouldn't be able to cut it in Scotland just because he hasn't managed there before.

Whatever happens, Rangers simply must nail their next appointment, in order to bring stability and success back to the club, and there is no doubt that the Australian represents an intriguing option, having been lauded by Manchester City legend Pep Guardiola in the past.

Jess Watkin and Bernadine Bezuidenhout have both been offered central contracts for the New Zealand women, after their performances on the tour of Ireland and England.Watkin made 77 not out on her T20I debut and 62 on her ODI debut – both against Ireland – with the second knock part of a record total of 491 for 4.Bezuidenhout, who played for South Africa Women in 2014 and 2015 before switching over, made her New Zealand debut in the same game, hitting 23 not out off 15 balls.”It really is a dream come true to be offered my first full-time professional contract,” Watkin said. “Getting a taste of international cricket in Ireland and England left me wanting more and it’s awesome that I’ll now be able to train and play all year round.”The 20-year-old Watkin and the 24-year-old Bezuidenhout are among four new players in this year’s list of 15, joining Canterbury Magicians allrounders Hayley Jensen and Kate Ebrahim, who made comebacks to the team this year. Jensen, 25, had last played for New Zealand in 2014, while Ebrahim last played an international game in 2015.The ones who missed out after being on the list last year are Rachel Priest, Thamsyn Newton and Anna Peterson, while Erin Bermingham has retired from international cricket.Priest is the senior-most player to miss out, having played 86 ODIs and 68 T20Is since her international debut in 2007. She has had somewhat lean returns in the last two seasons though, with 440 runs in 19 ODIs at 23.18, though her strike-rate of 84.13 remained healthy. She wasn’t picked for any T20Is in 2017-18, but in the four T20Is she played in 2016-17, she made only 45 runs at considerably slower than a run a ball. The players who have been offered contracts have until August 6 to accept the offer.
