Liverpool Make First Move To Sign Two New Players For Jurgen Klopp

To say that Liverpool have had a turbulent summer would be an understatement. The Reds started off well in the summer transfer window, welcoming both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to begin their much-needed midfield rebuild.

Since then, however, things have only gone downhill, as they missed out on key targets. Now, as the window edges closer and closer to closing, Jurgen Klopp and co have reportedly turned their attention to Feyenoord for options.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Of course, if you cast your mind back, after their strong start to the window, Liverpool said their goodbyes to both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, as they duo swapped Merseyside for Saudi Arabia. Now, this wouldn't have been an issue if they had replacements instantly lined up.

That was far from the case, though, and with the Premier League season underway, the only incoming since Mac Allister and Szoboszlai has been Wataru Endo, following the rejection of both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who chose Chelsea over Liverpool this summer.

On top of their midfield crisis, it could be argued that the Reds need another central defender this summer, given Joel Matip's injury combined with the fact that he has one year remaining on his current contract.

With that said, according to Football Transfers, Liverpool have turned to Feyenoord to solve both of their issues, with the Premier League giants reportedly in contact with both David Hancko and Mats Wieffer over potential summer switches.

Appearing on ESPN's Football Talk, Hans Kraay junior recently spoke about the potential deal for Hancko, in particular, saying, via Football Transfers: "Do all those Premier League clubs send half-blind scouts to the Netherlands? Hancko is worth £35/40 million for almost every team, isn't he?"

As things stand, Feyenoord are yet to set their price, but it certainly seems as though it would cost Liverpool a hefty fee as the transfer window comes to a close.

Should Liverpool sign Hancko and Wieffer?

Slovakia'sDavidHanckoin action

Given their problems in both central defence and midfield, welcoming both Hancko and Wiffer could be an act of genius from Liverpool.

Hancko, a centre-back, is still only 25-years-old and should, therefore, be in the middle of his prime in the Netherlands. The Slovakian played a key part in Feyenoord's title-winning campaign last time out, even enjoying nine goal involvements from the back.

Meanwhile, Wieffer – a defensive midfielder by trade – is only 23-years-old, and played an equally impressive part in Feyenoord's title win last season, scoring three goals, whilst also assisting a further seven in all competitions.

Compared to recent Liverpool signing Endo last season, as per FBref, Wieffer made more progressive passes, more progressive carries, better pass completion, and made more blocks, interceptions, and tackles per 90. Any way that you look at it, Wieffer would be the option to strengthen Klopp's midfield.

Hancko is just as impressive, too, making more progressive passes, winning more tackles, and making fewer errors per 90 than Joel Matip last season.

If Liverpool do push ahead with deals for the Feyenoord duo, it would represent solid business.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper sweating on "important player" after injury update

Nottingham Forest have been dealt with a potential injury blow ahead of the return to club football this weekend, with reports coming out that one of their promising new signings has returned early from the international break.

Nottingham Forest – latest team news

After a positive start to the campaign, Steve Cooper’s side found themselves going into the international break in ninth place after four games played, winning two and losing two.

Over the course of the international fixtures so far, six Forest players have been involved for their respective countries, with some exciting performances standing out to fans.

New signing Ibrahim Sangare, who is yet to make his Forest debut, scored the only goal for his native Ivory Coast, as they beat Lesotho 1-0 in their final game of the AFCON qualifying stages.

Meanwhile, centre-forward Taiwo Awoniyi continued his fine form, as he scored for Nigeria in their 6-0 rout over São Tomé and Príncipe. Defender Ola Aina also featured in the game, playing 73 minutes.

There is, however, some more slightly concerning news for Forest fans after winger Anthony Elanga was withdrawn from the Swedish national camp after picking up an injury in training.

What's the latest news on Anthony Elanga?

The latest reports coming out of his home country reveal that the 21-year-old dynamo has left their team camp immediately to return to Forest, having picked up an issue.

The winger was an unused substitute as Sweden beat Estonia 5-0 on Saturday and the latest update means he will no longer be part of the squad for the upcoming game against Austria on Tuesday.

Currently, the cause or extent of the injury have not been revealed, although in an official statement released by the Sweden national team, it was described as 'minor' but it is clearly bad enough to return to the Midlands ahead of schedule.

How has Elanga performed this season?

The absence of Swede would no doubt be damaging to Cooper and the team, having made a promising start to his Forest career since his summer move from Manchester United.

Elanga is already off the mark in terms of both goals and assists, including a memorable match-winning goal against Chelsea to hand Forest their first away win of the season before the international break.

His efforts earned the praises of his boss, who after the result at Stamford Bridge said:

“We want players like [Elanga] in the squad who are young and hungry, and who we know can grow.

“He is already a really good player, but he will become a very important player for us. It’s just a process. Days like this will help him as well.”

The club will be hopeful that the injury is not a serious concern that could threaten to keep the winger out for extended periods of time, as Elanga – who earns around £25k-per-week at the City Ground – had been quickly adapting to life at Forest ahead of the break.

The side return to action on September 18th where they host Burnley, who are still looking for a first league win of the season, although they got the better of Forest when the two sides met in the Carabao Cup second round in late August.

CSA trial music between balls in T20 cricket

Manish Pandey works Tabraiz Shamsi to deep fine leg for a single. “I’ve Got The Power” plays on the stadium’s PA system. Suresh Raina pushes the next ball straight to cover for a dot. “Here Comes The Hotstepper” blares out. Welcome to the new world of music after every ball in T20 cricket, assuming the paying public cares for it.Yes, songs have been played on a cricket ground in between overs and after boundaries for a while now. But Cricket South Africa is using the T20Is against India to trial the idea of playing music between deliveries. At the end of the series, the ticketholders will be asked to participate in an online survey and the decision to stop or keep going will be made based on the feedback.”Twenty20 is played in festive environment,” a CSA official said. “It is followed by families and kids. We wanted to see if our public wants more of the music and dance. We will of course listen to the people and see what the survey says. If they like it, we might even get a professional DJ at our grounds for T20.”The official said CSA was not taking the lead from what happened in the Trans-Tasman tri-series. Music between deliveries was tried during a game at Eden Park in Auckland last week and it received harsh criticism from the fans, including those on Twitter. As in South Africa, the cricket board in New Zealand is in charge of the music on game day. The negative response to the experiment brought immediate results: the music was reduced in the subsequent matches of the tri-series.”NZC is in charge of game day enhancements such as music, and they turned it down as soon as they were informed,” Eden Park tweeted in response to the complaints against the too-frequent music.

Burnley Could Sign "Terrific" Brownhill Replacement For £5.5m

Burnley are reportedly eyeing their next acquisition, as manager Vincent Kompany looks to make way for his 14th summer arrival in the bid to make the Clarets’ return to the Premier League a memorable campaign.

Despite being without a game last weekend due to Luton Town’s ground, Kenilworth Road, undergoing improvements to keep up with their meteoric rise to the top, it came to light that the new arrivals to the top-flight had beat Manchester United 3-0 in a fixture behind closed doors.

After comfortably winning the Championship last campaign, Burnley have seen multiple squad changes, with rumours speculating that further additions could be welcome to Turf Moor before the close of the window.

Who could Burnley sign this summer?

This week, the Clarets welcomed former Aston Villa midfielder Aaron Ramsey to the side marking Kompany’s 13th new addition, with rumours building that another arrival may be in the pipeline.

Earlier this week, journalist Dominik Schnieder took to social media to report that the Lancashire outfit are making a “push” to sign Sporting Lisbon B midfielder Renato Veiga, with FC Basel and Standard Liege also holding interest.

The reporter also relayed that a fee in the region of £5.5m to be paid in three instalments has been put on the table by the Premier League side, and a five-year contract for the 20-year-old starlet to consider.

Who is Renato Veiga?

Born in Lisbon, the versatile defensively-minded machine has risen through the ranks at Sporting where he is now a member of the side’s B team.

In January, the 20-year-old gem got his first taste of playing the top-flight, endeavouring on a half-season loan to FC Augsburg, where in which he made 13 appearances in the Bundesliga.

Deployable at both centre-back and left-back, the combative starlet is most prominently fielded in defensive midfield at his boyhood club, however, his versatility was exploited in Germany, where he was positioned in central defence.

Having been lauded as a “terrific footballer” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the midfielder could be the perfect capture for Kompany at Turf Moor, as he braces for potential change in the midfield areas before the end of the summer.

Josh Brownhill has been linked to a host of clubs in both the Championship and Premier League, including Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United, and after three-and-a-half years could leave the claret and blue this window.

Josh-Brownhill

The Englishman has been used in defensive midfield by Kompany, making a potential swoop for Veiga a smart one should the 27-year-old indeed move onto pastures new.

The Portuguese starlet is a defensively competent player, as highlighted by his averages in the Bundesliga last term, in which he averaged 1.27 tackles, 2.82 blocks and a mammoth 4.08 clearances, via FBref, suggesting the dominant presence he could bring to the Premier League.

While Brownhill is more of a progressive player, the Englishman’s departure along with the potential capture of the Sporting B sensation could give Kompany the freedom to juggle his midfield, with new arrival Sander Berge having a pass to roam with the assurance of an anchor.

In signing the 20-year-old, the Belgian manager can have a young and versatile star at his disposal, in a player that could prove to be a secret weapon for the Clarets due to his ability to take on a variety of tasks on the pitch.

Marinakis rejected late approach for star player at Nottingham Forest

In the last two years, Nottingham Forest have gone from a Championship side far from promotion to a Premier League outfit capable of welcoming players of Keylor Navas' calibre. Simply put, their transformation has been sensational.

After avoiding instant relegation from England's top flight last season, too, the Midlands club have strengthened even further, welcoming a total of 14 players in what was a summer of constant arrivals once more.

The sheer number of reinforcements meant that Steve Cooper could comfortably bid farewell to Brennan Johnson, who completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Forest did, however, turn down a late approach for another star player when Chelsea made a late move.

What's the latest Nottingham Forest transfer news?

Among the 14 players that Forest welcomed this summer was former Liverpool star Divock Origi. The striker comes in to provide depth to Cooper's attack, and perhaps even a partner for Taiwo Awoniyi, who has already scored three goals in four Premier League games this season.

The Forest star looks to have really settled in the Midlands since the back end of last season, and is firing his side away from the troubles of a relegation battle as things stand. Forest proved their ability to keep hold of their key players, too.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea enquired about the former Union Berlin forward just 48 hours before deadline day, only to receive a swift and certain no from Evangelos Marinakis and Forest.

A couple of years ago, they may not have stood a chance amid interest from a club of Chelsea's stature. Now, however, they are not only in the position to say no, but the position to beat the Blues at Stamford Bridge straight afterwards.

How has Taiwo Awoniyi performed this season?

Awoniyi has been one of the standout players in the Premier League so far this season, and not just with goals. The forward's improvement in the last six months at Forest has earned him some deserved praise, including from Jurgen Klopp, who told BBC Sport: "He had a sensational development. He has arrived where he belongs and I am happy for him, but not today (playing Liverpool) so much."

It's no surprise that Chelsea enquired about the forward, either, given their struggles in front of goal, failing to score against Forest in their 1-0 defeat. Statistically speaking, per FBref, Awoniyi has got off to the perfect start when compared to Chelsea's summer arrival, Nicolas Jackson.

As you can see, Awoniyi has been a class above. The Forest striker's expected goals number is particularly impressive, having found the back of the net on more occasions than expected when considering the quality of his chances.

From Cooper's perspective, he'll just be hoping that the goals keep coming from his star man. The manager will also be glad that Chelsea's enquiry was quickly followed up with a no, as he looks to guide Forest into the comforts of mid-table this season. Awoniyi, and Forest, will certainly be interesting to watch this season.

Cricket West Indies has appointed former South African fast bowler Alfonso Thomas as the bowling coach of the senior men’s team. The board made a number of changes to the coaching and support staff for the current squads keeping in mind the World Cup Qualifiers and the Women’s World T20 scheduled for later this year.Former West Indies legspinner Rawl Lewis, who previously worked with the side as team operations manager during their successful World T20 campaign in 2016, was named the team manager.Thomas, who represented South Africa in a sole T20I in 2007, has held specialist roles in Championship cricket in the UK. The former Somerset limited-overs captain, who is ninth on the list of most successful T20 bowlers, has also played in the IPL, BBL and the BPL, with 263 T20 wickets to his name.”We are focused on improving team performance, as well as broadening and deepening the coaching expertise in the region,” CWI director Jimmy Adams said. “We know we’ve got vital games and tournaments this year and we’re confident that these appointments will strengthen the Windies squads for this year and our future plans.”The other new inclusions in head coach Stuart Law’s crop are team physio David Kershaw and strength and conditioning coach Corey Bocking. In relation to specific changes, CWI chief executive Johnny Grave said, “Joel Garner has agreed to become an Ambassador, supporting the fundraising IT20 match at Lord’s at the end of May and helping us launch the Windies Foundation planned for later this year. Ronald Rogers will remain in the region working with Alzarri Joseph on his rehabilitation programme following his stress fracture.”

Beale not messing around: GvB signing left out in the cold at Rangers

Getting the transfer window right can completely dictate a team's season and future, and in Rangers' case, the window they endured just before Giovanni van Bronckhorst left was one to forget, which didn't exactly help his job security.

In the summer of 2022, the Gers spent a reported €14m (£12.5m) on arrivals, welcoming seven fresh faces in total. One year later, however, and now under Michael Beale, only two of those seven reinforcements started in Rangers' most recent game against Celtic.

Now, to really sum up just how disappointing some of their 2022 investments have been, Beale has made a surprising exclusion in his Europa League squad.

Who is in Rangers' Europa League squad?

Rangers' Europa League squad doesn't include a lot of shocks, but that's not to say it's without its controversies. Expected names such as James Tavernier, Sam Lammers, Connor Goldson, and Ryan Jack have all been named alongside other regulars. But the controversy comes from the two names left out, with one, in particular, a slight surprise.

Beale opted to leave out Kieran Dowell, who is currently injured, as well as Ridvan Yilmaz, who made the move to Ibrox last summer for a reported £5m. Left out by the manager after initially arriving under Von Bronckhorst, Yilmaz must be left wondering just where he stands at Rangers.

The defender's omission means that Borna Barisic is the only left-back option in Beale's Europa League squad, meaning that they are one injury away from being forced to shoehorn another member of the squad into the fullback role.

Rangers' European campaign gets underway on 21 September against Real Betis, where they'll look to get off to the perfect start to life in Group C, before squaring off against both Spata Prague and Aris Limassol. They will, however, have to complete their progression without Yilmaz.

How has Ridvan Yilmaz performed this season?

Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz.

It's difficult to judge how Yilmaz has performed this season, in truth, considering that he has played just 26 minutes in the Scottish Premiership, which came from the bench in Rangers' recent 1-0 loss in the Old Firm derby against Celtic.

In his debut campaign for the Gers last time out, meanwhile, the left-back missed 29 games through injury. With that said, it's fair to say that his career at Ibrox is yet to really get going, and his Europa League omission certainly won't help things.

It is worth remembering, of course, that Yilmaz is still just 22-years-old, and finding his feet at a new club. As the season goes on, he could yet receive his much-needed chance to impress Beale, too, even though it won't be in the Europa League.

If he does fail to impress in the current campaign, then Yilmaz may find himself at a bit of a crossroads, having had two seasons to get his chance at Ibrox by that point. It will certainly be interesting to see when the left-back will get a regular opportunity for Rangers, and whether he ends up defying the odds by rescuing his Gers career.
