Aston Villa have had a very active summer in the transfer market with four new additions joining the project under Unai Emery at Villa Park, however, it is looking like their search for reinforcements could continue into the dying hours of Deadline Day.
As always, the Midlands club have regularly been linked with numerous players over the transfer window and last week were touted to make a move for highly-rated Barcelona forward Ansu Fati, who has found himself falling out of favour in Xavi Hernandez's side.
However, Fabrizio Romano reported late last night that Brighton and Hove Albion had swooped in to steal the signature of Fati on a season-long loan, leaving their Premier League competitors Villa and Tottenham Hotspur out in the cold.
Now, Emery will be scrambling to identify a quick solution to soften the blow of missing out on the Barcelona star with just over 24 hours left to add depth to his attacking threat for the season ahead.
Who are Aston Villa's Deadline Day targets?
The Villains have been given a boost in their pursuit to sign Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe in the last few days.
Indeed, it's been reported that the Gunners have no interest in selling their player to London rivals Chelsea this summer, according to 90min.

The publication claimed on Tuesday that Aston Villa are joined by Newcastle United in their interest of sealing a deal for Smith Rowe before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow night at 11pm.
What is Emile Smith Rowe good at?
There is no doubt that the opportunity to play regular first-team football at Villa Park will be an attractive prospect for Smith Rowe due to his inability to break back into the highly competitive starting XI at the Emirates.
Not only that, the chance to reunite with the former Arsenal boss who handed him his first team debut five seasons ago could also help Villa secure the signing of their man over the Magpies, as Emery will have a good understanding of what the young talent can bring to his squad in terms of his style of play and qualities.
Despite falling out of favour in recent times under Mikel Arteta, the 23-year-old registered two assists, tallied up a 91% pass completion rate and created two big chances over his 12 Premier League appearances whilst averaging just 15 minutes per game, which is still an impressive output considering the sheer lack of time on the pitch.
Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.
Before losing his starting spot at Arsenal, Smith Rowe – who has a reported £40m price tag – was often the subject of huge praise and compliments from the biggest names in football with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher waxing lyrical about the Englishman:
"Emile Smith Rowe will get England caps, absolutely no doubt. There are so many good young players. He'll have to bide his time, there are other young players ahead of him right now but I absolutely love that lad.
"He's so exciting, the pace, moving with the ball. He's a special talent. He can pop up in different positions, he has that ability to play all four positions up top and that's a real bonus."
Whilst the other half of Sky Sports' popular duo, Gary Neville, also only had compliments for the Arsenal youngster:
"He's a breath of fresh air. Him and Saka make you feel joy about football. They still play with that spirit and it's wonderful to watch."
Not only would the England U21s star be a worthy alternative to Fati, he would also soften the blow of losing Emi Buendia to a horrific knee injury on the left wing, as Smith Rowe offers the versatility and experience of playing on both the left-flank and in attacking midfield.
With that being said, the signing of the Arsenal star would be a no-brainer for Emery as he could bring in a player who not only has incredible knowledge and experience of football in the Premier League, but could make an instant impact on performances in the final third with consistent game time.
West Ham United are in for a dramatic deadline day, as David Moyes revises his options ahead of the close of the transfer window tonight.
The Irons have recruited well so far this summer following the £105m sale of Declan Rice, however another target has emerged in the bid to bolster the side further.
Who could West Ham sign on deadline day?
After the audacious capture of Mohammed Kudus from Ajax, Moyes significantly strengthened his attack, however it looks as though the east Londoners are poaching another forward.
As reported by the Daily Mail, West Ham are considering a move for Paris Saint Germain starlet Hugo Ekitike, who is said to be valued by the Parisians at €40m (£34m).
Moyes was asked specifically about the Frenchman when quizzed by the media ahead of deadline day, in which he responded: “You wouldn't get me commenting on a player from another club.”
How good is Hugo Ekitike?
Having been tipped to become a “star” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Ekitike is one of the most noticeable young forwards in Ligue 1.
Prior to his move to PSG, the 21-year-old gem netted 10 league goals for Stade Reims, as well as registering four assists in an impressive individual campaign in the French top-flight, in a season that marked his breakthrough.
Considering the talent and lucrative ambitions of PSG, it was always going to be difficult for the youngster to make a statement in the capital due to there being little guarantee of his game time.
Putting this aside, the striker needed little time to show his worth, contributing to seven goals in 25 appearances for the Parisians, scoring three and assisting four in only 12 league starts and an average of 46 minutes per game, via Sofascore.
Paris St Germain'sHugoEkitikebefore the match
For West Ham, hiring talent from the French league has proven to be a strong move in the past, take last summer's swoop for Lucas Paqueta from Olympique Lyonnais.
On a whole other level to the Brazilian – in terms of successful moves from France – is Dimitri Payet, who almost single-handedly fired the Hammers to a seventh-place finish in his debut campaign.
The Frenchman netted nine goals and registered 12 assists in his first season in east London, asserting himself as Slaven Bilic’s star man and West Ham’s saviour on many occasions.
During his time in the capital, the midfielder was dubbed a “special player” by his teammate at the time Winston Reid, and ultimately showed just how vital a strong signing can be in the window.
In exploring a deal for Ekitike, who has been lauded as a "complete" and "clinical finisher" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Moyes could repeat history in handing the Hammers another star from Ligue 1.
Like Payet before his move, all the signs are there for the youngster to become an important part of the scenery at West Ham, with the Frenchman showing his lively spark through his 1.4 shots per game last term.
In the season prior to his transfer to the Irons, Payet averaged two shots per game for Marseille, communicating the similarities to their impact and importance in attack.
At only 21 years of age, Moyes could hand Ekitike a starring role at the London Stadium, in the hope that the Frenchman could thrive and follow suit in being another hit signing from France’s top-tier.
Newcastle United have made a poor start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, and a reliable journalist has delivered an update on the future of Eddie Howe.
What's happening at Newcastle right now?
St. James’ Park chiefs first appointed Howe back in November 2021 having taken a bit of time out of work following his departure from Bournemouth, as per Transfermarkt, and during his almost two years in the northeast, the positive impact that he’s made both on and off the pitch is clear to see.
The Magpies, however, have only won one and lost three of their opening four games of the new top-flight campaign, via Sky Sports, which sees them sitting 14th in the table on just three points, and these underwhelming results compared to last term could potentially raise questions surrounding the 45-year-old at the helm.
The Amersham-born manager will also be aware that the level of competition won’t be getting any easier having been drawn in a group with Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in the Champions League, so the boss will be aware that he’s got a big job on his hands to maintain the high standard that was set last season.
Are Newcastle sacking Eddie Howe?
Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano shared what he’s heard on Howe’s future at Newcastle. He said:
“It’s not been the best start to the season for Newcastle United, who have lost three in a row since their opening day win over Aston Villa. Of course this is a disappointment after the superb achievements of last season, but I think fans can be calm.
"My understanding is that Eddie Howe is absolutely not under pressure, it’s all quiet. The Newcastle owners love the manager and there are no issues at the moment. Of course Howe will have time to play Champions League football as Newcastle coach, there are no messages in a different direction at this moment in time.”
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.
What is Eddie Howe's record at Newcastle?
During his time at Newcastle, Howe has taken charge of 78 matches, winning 39, drawing 19 and losing 20, meaning that he’s picked up 136 points from a possible 234 whilst averaging 1.74 points per match, via Transfermarkt, which is an impressive record in the grand scheme of things.
The Wasserman client, who has a preferred formation of 4-3-3, has also been individually recognised for his impact from the dugout since putting pen to paper with the black and white stripes having twice won the Premier League Manager of the Month award, with his positive impact resulting in him receiving plenty of plaudits and accolades.
Despite Howe's struggles this season, PIF will be aware of the fantastic relationship that he's built with supporters, not only himself but the whole of the squad, and there's no doubt that it would be difficult to find a replacement that could come in and work the same magic as he has, so it's completely the right decision to stick with him and give him the opportunity to turn things back around.
The Vidarbha fast bowler is cover for the injured Ishan Porel and is set to fly to New Zealand on Wednesday
ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jan-2018Aditya Thakare has been called up to India’s Under-19 World Cup squad as cover for the injured Ishan Porel. The Vidarbha fast bowler, one of five stand-bys for the squad, is set to fly to New Zealand on Wednesday.Porel injured his left ankle in India’s tournament opener against Australia, in which he could bowl just 4.1 overs. He spent the rest of the innings off the field and did not train ahead of India’s second game, against Papua New Guinea, either.”It’s hard to predict how long he’ll take to recover, but we’re looking at giving him every opportunity to be a part of the campaign again, because this is what he’s worked for,” a member of India’s support staff told ESPNcricinfo. “We’re looking to possibly having him fit in time for the quarter-finals. It could take five days, sometimes seven days. At the moment, he won’t play the game against Zimbabwe either.”Thakare made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy final in December 2017, when Vidarbha beat Delhi. While he managed to pick up just two wickets, he impressed with his late swing and accuracy with both the new and old ball. After the game, Vidarbha coach Chandrakant Pandit admitted to having been apprehensive of exposing Thakare in a pressure game, but expressed surprise at his ability after Vidarbha’s maiden title triumph. On Monday, the Vidarbha Cricket Association was asked to provide a report on Thakare’s fitness by the BCCI, following which he was asked not to be considered for any ongoing matches. The call-up means he will miss the Cooch Behar Trophy semi-finals against Karnataka in Nagpur starting Friday. With an Under-19 Trophy in sight, the Vidarbha Cricket Association chose to field him in the junior tournament instead of playing him in the zonal leg of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic T20 competition. He was part of India’s Under-19 squad for the Asia Cup in Malaysia last year, but didn’t feature in the playing XI.Thakare is only the second player from Vidarbha to be picked in India’s Under-19 World Cup squad. Faiz Fazal, the Vidarbha captain, was part of the 2004 edition, but had to return after fracturing his thumb in a warm-up game. Fazal was replaced by Shikhar Dhawan, who went on to become the tournament’s leading run-scorer.
Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur was given a rough reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in Pakistan cricket after seeing his side slump to a 5-0 ODI series defeat in New Zealand. The whitewash was just the third 5-0 loss in Pakistan’s history, and the first since 2010. Speaking after the game, he said he refused to use the conditions as an excuse, instead laying the responsibility at the feet of the top order.”They’ve got the ability and without wanting to look for excuses, they need to get better in these conditions,” Arthur said. “Our guys need to step up, that’s the bottom line. Our top order haven’t done a job for us in the series and that’s a pity. Haris Sohail coming in gave us some stability, and he showed us how to apply oneself in these conditions.”Pakistan’s struggles against the new ball in seaming conditions have been brutally exposed this series, with Trent Boult and Tim Southee running riot in the first Powerplay. Pakistan lost their first two wickets for under 20 runs in all five matches. They found themselves reduced to 54 for 5, 39 for 3, 32 for 8, 11 for 2, and 57 for 5 at the starts of the five matches, meaning they found themselves playing catch-up for the best part of their innings all series. With the World Cup now less than 18 months away, Arthur said the side may need to reevaluate their approach.”With the World Cup coming up in a year’s time, it’s important now that the next one-day team we play is a team that we really believe can shake the World Cup up. It’s not discrediting to the players in the dressing room because they have tried exceptionally hard, but we do need to reassess where we go to make sure we get it right next time when we come out, particularly in foreign conditions.”At the same time, he defended the players that were part of the tour, lauding the way young players had stood up whenever given the chance, and warning against writing off players who, just six months ago, won the Champions Trophy.”Every time we bring young boys in, they stand up. They have done it, they have done it under pressure. They did it at the Champions Trophy for us. When Fakhar Zaman walked in, he changed the tempo in the Champions Trophy, playing fearless cricket. Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, these are the guys who’d do anything for you. When we play in our own conditions, we dominate because our guys are comfortable and they play very well there. This is like playing on the north pole for them. It’s so different but we got to be better at that.”But our blue print that we had was good enough to win us the Champions Trophy, it was good enough to win nine ODIs in a row. But we haven’t played well enough here, and that’s a fact. Our guys have come out of playing a lot of T20 leagues. I am not making excuses, that’s just the way it is. We haven’t adapted well and haven’t played well enough. But the blue print for us still remains the same, but obviously personnel changes could happen.”Arthur also said New Zealand deserved credit for the way they had played, and that playing against them would be difficult in any conditions. Kane Williamson’s men have enjoyed a purple patch of late, impressing in a series defeat in India last year, before going on a run at home that has seen them notch up a record number of consecutive wins. They currently have a 100 per cent winning record this home season, winning two Tests, three ODIs and two T20Is against the West Indies before the 5-0 against Pakistan.”They are very good team. I am incredibly impressed with how they are playing and I have watched them over the period of time. Every team right now in their conditions is a very good team. But you are judged how you play away from home, and I watched them in India, and New Zealand played exceptionally well outside. They seem to have covered all the bases.”

Despite the 222-run win, the defending champions are no longer in contention for the knockouts

Defending champions West Indies prevailed over Kenya in a one-sided contest in Lincoln, registering a 222-run win – their first in three games this tournament – courtesy Alick Athanaze’s unbeaten 116, and a combined nine wickets between Bhaskar Yadram and Jeavor Royal. Despite the two points, West Indies are no longer in contention for a knockout berth as hosts New Zealand and South Africa lead them on the points table.West Indies got off to a solid start after opting to bat, thanks to a quickfire fifty from Kimani Melius (60 off 45). His opening partner Keagan Simmons’ dismissal in the 15th over, however, led to the side losing their top three for four runs within the space of eight deliveries. Kenya, on their part, failed to capitalise on the quick wickets, allowing Athanaze and Kirstan Kallicharan to hoist West Indies to 150 via a 68-run partnership. While Athanaze motored on, having struck an unbeaten 76 in the previous game, the lower-order duo of Royal and Nyeem Young chipped in with 24 and 57 respectively to help their side finish on 318 for 7. Aveet Desai, the pick of the Kenya bowlers, finished with figures of 3 for 54.Subsequently, it took West Indies all of 24.4 overs to skittle the Kenya line-up with left-arm spinner Royal taking 4 for 25 in his 7.4 overs and Yadram ending with 5 for 18 from his seven overs. Only three of the Kenya batsmen mustered double-digit scores, with opener Aman Gandhi top-scoring with 37.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping that the last week of the summer transfer window is productive as he really needs to bring in another one or two fresh faces.
There have been just three summer arrivals thus far in Manchester and if the Dutchman holds any ambition of fighting on both domestic and European fronts, depth is needed.
With this in mind, the Red Devils have shown interest in a Paris Saint-Germain midfielder recently and given how little time the manager has to work with, could he secure his services before the end of next week?
Are Manchester United going to make more signings?
Marco Verratti is a name that has cropped up recently, according to French outlet L’Equipe (as relayed by Get Football News France), with United are keen on luring him to the Premier League.
The Italy international is looking likely to leave the French capital this summer following an 11-year stint at PSG and this could tempt Ten Hag into making a swoop.

According to FootballTransfers, Verratti is currently valued at €31.1m (£27m) and given that he has a contract until 2026, the Dutchman may have to shell out slightly more to secure his signature before deadline day.
What could Marco Verratti offer Manchester United?
Along with adding some new faces to his squad, Ten Hag has also been busy in having a clear-out.
Among his most high-profile departures are Anthony Elanga, David De Gea, Alex Telles and Fred, freeing up some room in the wage budget in the process.
Moving on the Brazilian midfielder could perhaps be the best bit of business the manager does this summer.
Although they couldn’t quite recoup the £52m they shelled out on him five years ago, it was evident that he didn’t quite have a future under the Dutchman as he failed to impose himself in the squad last term.
Fred started just 12 games in the Premier League while ranking in a lowly 18th place across the squad for overall Sofascore rating, suggesting that even when he did get a chance, he failed to impress.
United could forget all about Fred with the signing of Verratti, and he has emerged as one of the finest midfielders of his generation over the previous decade.
Indeed, throughout the previous 12 months, the 30-year-old machine ranks in the top 1% when compared to positional peers for pass completion percentage per 90 (92.5%) while also ranking in the top 6% for progressive passes (9.87) and tackles (3.2) per 90, indicating that not only would he be able to dictate the play wonderfully in Ten Hag’s side, but his tenacious nature would allow him to win the ball back often.
Mauricio Pochettino, his former coach at PSG, hailed the midfielder previously, saying:
"He is a player with a very good ability to read the game. He allows for us each time to have attacking possession and to bring the ball out into good situations, to better start off attacks. In attacking phases, he can double his efforts and provoke situations going forward. For me, he is a truly great player."
High praise indeed, so Ten Hag must act fast in order to bring him to Manchester, and it will allow him to move on from Fred in the process.
Looking to strengthen before the summer transfer window slams shut, Leeds United could reportedly turn their attention to the Premier League as they attempt to build a squad capable of promotion at the first time of asking.
So far this summer, Daniel Farke has welcomed a total of four new arrivals, with the pick of the bunch being Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
Now, however, the Yorkshire club could reportedly turn to Jonjo Shelvey.
What's the latest on Jonjo Shelvey to Leeds United?
According to reports, Leeds are considering making a move for out-of-favour Nottingham Forest midfielder Shelvey this summer. The former Newcastle United man is yet to make an appearance for Steve Cooper's side this season, and missed the final part of the last campaign after a reported bust-up with the manager.
Now, Leeds could swoop in to end a saga to forget for the Englishman, after they recently lost Tyler Adams to Bournemouth, leaving them in need of a midfielder, as per Teamtalk.
With plenty of experience to his name, it would certainly be interesting to see Shelvey make the move to Elland Road this summer. If he does stay at Forest, game-time looks unlikely to come his way anytime soon.
Should Leeds United sign Jonjo Shelvey?
Replacing a 24-year-old midfielder with a 31-year-old player who was frozen out at the back end of last season is far from a good look on paper for Leeds. However, Shelvey's experience could be crucial in a young squad at Elland Road.
The likes of Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray could undoubtedly do with a bit of guidance in the middle of the park to combine with their youthful fearlessness. So, whilst Shelvey is far from a star player, he could yet play a pivotal part if he made the move to the Yorkshire club.
It's worth noting, too, that the midfielder has experience of earning promotion from the Championship after securing the league title with Newcastle back in the 2016/17 season.
When at his best, Shelvey has earned plenty of praise, too, including from former Hull City man Michael Dawson, who said on Sky Sports, via Nottingham Forest News: "He certainly creates chances, he gets on the ball and makes things happen. That’s something that Forest in the first 60 minutes, or even in previous games, have been missing.
“He will get on the ball in the middle of the field, he’s got a wide range of passes, he’s a very confident player. Not just confident, he can execute that pass when he sees it, if it’s a long-range one he can hit that.”
So far this season, Leeds have struggled for control in some areas and have, therefore, failed to get off to an emphatic start.

In their opening three games, Farke's side have struggled, failing to win a single game, with draws against Cardiff City and West Bromwich Albion, as well as a surprise defeat at the hands of Birmingham City.
Shelvey could bring some much-needed calm to what is a rocky ship at Elland Road, if he does end up making the move this summer.
