Arsenal Could Sign ‘Outstanding’ £50m Timber Partner

Arsenal could be set to continue their summer spending, by returning to finalise a longstanding transfer saga…

How much would Romeo Lavia cost?

According to Belgian outlet DH, via Sport Witness, the Gunners could trump Liverpool in the pursuit of Southampton's star Romeo Lavia.

The Belgian midfielder, who enjoyed his breakout year last term in the Premier League, has been linked with an exit from St Mary's for some time since their relegation.

However, it seems that his potential move to the Emirates hinges largely on the future of Thomas Partey, and whether he departs for Saudi Arabia.

Given one Saudi Arabian journalist, Nawaf Al-Aqeel, claimed the Ghana international had already agreed personal terms with a club just last week, they should now have the upper hand over the Reds that the report suggested they would. Should that move go through, then bringing Lavia in is to become a 'priority', as per the report.

The Saints are set to command a fee of around £50m for his services, although Football Transfers only value the 19-year-old at €20.3m (£17.6m).

How good is Romeo Lavia?

This high-profile acquisition would supplement the three new faces already integrated within Mikel Arteta's squad, as they recently jetted off to America with Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber all part of the side.

Whilst it was a drawn-out process to sign the latter two, it finally seems as though their team has the requisite depth to truly challenge Manchester City and push them even further in the battle for elite honours.

However, this has clearly not stopped the north London club from scouring the market for additional deals that would further aid in this pursuit.

jurrien-timber

Given the versatility and immense technical capabilities of their new Dutch defender, it is expected that the former Ajax man will largely enjoy a future as an inverted full-back, coming inside from the right to help underpin Arteta's philosophy. This is despite his preferred role being as a centre-back.

Should this be the case, and with the potential double exit of Partey and Granit Xhaka, they would be without that midfield general to act as the foundation for such a system.

Therefore, Lavia's arrival could provide just that, with a defence-first mindset that would make him a formidable asset in the engine room to provide the springboard for Timber to shine.

After all, even though last term marked just his first full year in English football, he showed no signs of being overawed despite his youth. The 6.80 average rating he would record in the league made him the eighth-best performer within his club, as a figure largely boosted through his 86% pass accuracy, 68% dribble success, 2.1 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game, via Sofascore.

Southampton's Romeo Lavia

Partey could only match his tackling success and would record even fewer interceptions per game, via Sofascore. Journalist Ed Aarons' surprise at his level despite his age summed up the thoughts of many who witnessed Lavia's personal campaign: "Romeo Lavia is outstanding. And still only 19…"

To imagine this kind of added steel within Arteta's engine room, whilst the similarly solid Timber inverts beside him, immediately the two could form one of the strongest midfield pairings in the division.

Not to mention that, whilst he too posted 1.4 tackles and 1.9 clearances per game in the Eredivisie, the 22-year-old also ranked in the top 1% for passes attempted, progressive passes and progressive carries per 90 when compared to other centre-backs across Europe, via FBref.

To partner these two with one another could see a fine balance struck, to help propel this new-look side to the league title that they so richly crave.

Lawrence wears 'next big thing' tag easily

Dan Lawrence scored his second century of the season as Essex gained a slender first-innings lead over Surrey before rain curtailed the day

Vithushan Ehantharajah at Chelmsford28-May-2017
Scorecard”If Dan Lawrence goes big” is a phrase you hear a lot around Chelmsford. There are long- and short-term implications. They have him pegged as the next Essex player to represent England and the next in a long line to do them proud. But when a punter uttered that phrase at the car park gates, he meant today.Essex still trailed Surrey by 154 runs and their hopes of safety rested in the hands of a 19-year-old. He allayed fears early doors with a four off his legs that eased them past the follow-on target. Then, with a single to cover off his 199th ball, he brought up his second Championship hundred of the season and sixth of his career.Without his 107 which spanned from lunch on day two to a similar time on day three, Surrey would have been able to turn the screw on Essex. Instead, the visitors were the ones who welcomed the rains most when played was called off with 26 overs still to play.A lot of younger players take to county cricket with ideas above their station. Even the ones that crack it early tend to have the odd patch when age can be a handy excuse for fair-weather attitudes. But Lawrence, in a first-class career only a couple of seasons old, has already developed a reputation as a kid for a crisis. All runs are equal but some matter more than others. Already this season, Lawrence has a seven-hour vigil against Lancashire under his belt: 141 unbeaten runs to fend off the advances of James Anderson, Kyle Jarvis and Ryan McLaren.Essex have never had doubts over Lawrence’s ability: his maiden Championship hundred, also against Surrey, came at the age of 17 years and 290 days and, crucially, at No. 3. While he started out as an opener and spent most of 2016 at No. 5, he says four is his best position, backing his ability to see off the new ball and also motor on from a good start. Responsibility that the club are happy to give him and he is more than happy to embrace.Dan Lawrence made his sixth first-class hundred•Getty Images

So it was no surprise to hear how frustrated he was that he didn’t make this hundred “a big one”. He was trapped in front by Stuart Meaker, trying to make moves into the leg side, with Essex still 113 behind. Luckily by then skipper Ryan ten Doeschate was comfortable enough to open his shoulders, run hard – there aren’t many quicker in the domestic game – and punish any minor error in judgement from Surrey’s bowlers, who had begun to feel the toil of the best part of two days in the dirt.Ten Doeschate’s first half-century of the season was soon followed by Neil Wagner’s first for Essex – and seventh of his first class career – which was frenetic early and devastating later. He took a particular shine to the offspin of Amar Virdi, twice taking a brace of fours off him in an over. The second, back-to-back in the 128th over, brought Essex level with Surrey’s 369.Virdi, though, was able to take solace from his opening three wickets in professional cricket. The all important first came when he tempted a drive out of James Foster and span one sharply through his gate. The second came with the assistance of Ben Foakes, whose sharp work stumped an unbalanced Simon Harmer. The third, that of ten Doeschate, was a clever bit of bowling: using the turn on offer to change his angle to around the wicket and strike the right-hander in front. A debutant spinner who bowls 36 overs on a flat track and returns three wickets and an economy rate of 2.27 is something to be celebrated far beyond Surrey’s domain.Lawrence felt, in no uncertain terms, that weather had saved Surrey from returning on the final day four down for not very many. A handful of near-misses – he counted three drops – allowed Rory Burns to remain unbeaten overnight. Mark Stoneman wasn’t so lucky when he was caught brilliant by Alastair Cook at first slip, who dived in front of where second slip might have been to take an excellent one-handed catch. Surrey lead by 41 and, perhaps, if runs come easy, could entertain a declaration. Essex, of course, eye a simple chase. The pitch, though, might have the final say.

Leeds Make Offer For 25-Year-Old Goalkeeper

Leeds United have reportedly made an offer for Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, as they look to bring in a potential long-term replacement for Illan Meslier.

Who is Altay Bayindir?

The 25-year-old has matured into a strong 'keeper for his current side in recent years, having arrived at the club as a youngster back in 2019. Last season, he started 26 matches in the Turkish Super Lig, as well as starting eight times in the Europa League, proving to be a key man.

Bayindir has also made his mark at international level, winning five caps for Turkey to date, and given his age, it would be a surprise if that tally didn't increase as the years pass. Back in March, he signed a new deal with Fenerbahce lasting until 2027, suggesting that the club want to retain his services moving forward.

As Leeds get ready for life back in the Championship in 2023/24, there is a chance that they could be looking to bring in a replacement for Meslier, should their current No.1 look for a move away during the current transfer window. Joel Robles has also moved on, further showing why reinforcements are needed.

That's where Bayindir comes into play, with the Whites seemingly looking at him as a potential option to snap up before the new season gets underway.

Could Leeds sign Altay Bayindir?

According to Marca on Twitter [via MOT Leeds News], Leeds have tabled a £4.3m bid for Bayindir, although Fenerbahce are demanding £6m for his services, which would trigger his release clause:

"Leeds United made an official offer of €5m to Fenerbahce for 25-year-old goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Fenerbahce requests the player's €7m release clause to be paid."

Bayindir could be such a strong replacement for Meslier at Leeds this summer, coming in as an eye-catching addition, considering he is an international 'keeper who would be willing to drop down a level and play in the second tier of English football.

The Whites will need a formidable presence between the sticks if they are to be one of the Championship promotion favourites in 2023/24, with that area of the pitch so priceless. The Fenerbahce ace could be that man for Daniel Farke, already having plenty of experience under his belt and tasting Turkish Cup glory last season.

At 25, Bayindir would also be considered a long-term signing who could develop further in the coming years, rather than a quick fix who can do a job in the latter part of his career. The ideal scenario would see him join Leeds in the coming weeks, help inspire them to a fast return to the Premier League, then be their undisputed No.1 for the foreseeable future in the top flight.

The fact that his release clause is relatively low does act as a boost to the Whites, assuming they are willing to raise their bid, so it is a transfer where the positives comfortably outweigh the negatives, given the impact he could potentially make at Elland Road, having once been dubbed "one of the most interesting U-23 goalkeepers in Europe" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

'Cannot focus only on Williamson' – Mashrafe

Bangladesh only have positive thoughts going into their match against New Zealand even though they know they are lucky to still have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals and could still go home even with victory in Cardiff. The captain Mashrafe Mortaza admitted they had reacted negatively to their warm-up collapse against India, when they were skittled for 84 at The Oval, by picking an extra batsman for the opening England fixture. He promised, however, there would be no repeat, despite struggling against Australia except for Tamim Iqbal’s defiant 95.”We have to think positive for sure,” Mashrafe said. “For that we need to pick five bowlers – we normally play with five bowlers all the time. In the first match we were maybe thinking of the India practice match, but we can’t just go the negative way. We have to score as well as we have to get them all out.”We knew before the tournament that we had to produce something special, otherwise it wouldn’t be easy to beat teams like England and Australia. But we are a team that wouldn’t let go of a chance, so if one comes up tomorrow we will have to make sure we don’t let it slip.”Bangladesh are certainly familiar with New Zealand’s style of cricket, even if the side they faced in Ireland – and beat in their most recent meeting – did not contain some of the senior players. Among those they did not meet last month was Kane Williamson – who has been in magnificent form in the opening two matches – but, like Tamim, he too has very little to show for his efforts so far.’We can win from a really bad situation if Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur and Shakib are around’ – Mashrafe Mortaza•AFP

“He is in great form but we cannot focus only in on Williamson,” Mashrafe said. “They have some players like [Martin] Guptill who can change the game. So we have to think about all of their batsmen as a bowling group. And also if you look on our side, I think Tamim is in great form. It doesn’t mean that Tamim will come in to score tomorrow, as well. So you never know what’s going to happen.”Bangladesh are yet to see in this tournament how their batting fares if Tamim fails to post a significant score, although even with his contributions, the middle and lower order has not offered much beyond Mushfiqur Rahim’s 79 against England. In that match, they struggled to accelerate during the closing overs while in the Australia game they collapsed from 122 for 3 to 182 all out after the dismissal of Shakib Al Hasan. But Mashrafe said that Bangladesh’s batting depth should not be disregarded on the basis of their recent performances.”Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur and Shakib are players who can change the course of a game. We can win from a really bad situation if they are around. I am hoping that they will rise on the big situation, which is coming up tomorrow.”Everyone is excited. We knew that these three matches would be difficult for us. We know our limitations and strengths, so we are basing our game on those lines. We were lucky against Australia to get a point; we didn’t play too badly against England. We are still in the tournament, with a game in hand. I can feel it in the dressing room. We want to have a positive end to this tournament.”

Tottenham Could Rekindle Interest In £10m "Phenomenon"

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to revive their interest in Roma star, Paulo Dybala, with the World Cup-winning gem potentially in line for an exit from the Italian outfit this summer.

What are the latest Tottenham transfer rumours?

According to Correire dello Sport – via Sports Witness – the Lilywhites, as well as both Chelsea and Manchester United, are believed to be following the 29-year-old 'with great attention', amid the uncertainty regarding his long-term future at the Stadio Olimpico.

As per the report, despite having only signed for the Serie A outfit on a free transfer from rivals Juventus last term, the 38-cap Argentina international could be on his way ahead of next season, with his current deal including a bargain €12m (£10m) release clause that can be triggered by foreign clubs.

That minimal fee has evidently caught the interest of the north Londoners who have long held an interest in the 5 foot 10 playmaker, having attempted to sign the one-time Palermo man back in the summer of 2019.

How good is Paulo Dybala?

Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho – who is now in charge of the Rome giants – will no doubt be ruing the presence of that buy-out clause in Dybala's contract, with the experienced ace having established himself as a leading figure for I Giallorossi during his debut season at the club last time out.

The left-footed dynamo did have his struggles with injury during the 2022/23 campaign, although was still able to rack up 18 goals and eight assists in 38 games in all competitions, leading the charge to the Europa League final with five goals in 11 games in that continental competition.

That standout form led Roma legend Francesco Totti to hail the marksman as "special" as well as describing him as a "phenomenon", with the club evidently keen to ensure that their prize asset does not seek to secure a swift exit over the coming weeks.

James Maddison for Leicester City

As for Spurs, the signing of Dybala could represent a perfect deal for manager Ange Postecoglou, with the £116k-per-week ace said to share a number of stylistic and statistical similarities with the club's recent summer signing, James Maddison – according to FBref.

That likeness between the Argentine and Maddison – who contributed ten goals and nine assists in the Premier League last term – is apparent due to their creative brilliance, with Dybala ranking in the top 7% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for shot-creating actions, while the Englishman ranks in the top 13% in that regard.

In Serie A last term, Mourinho's main man notably created 12 big chances and averaged 2.1 key passes per game from his 25 league appearances as a sign of ability to provide quality service to the front line, with Maddison enjoying a remarkable similar record after also creating 12 big chances from his 30 league outings, while averaging 2.3 key passes per game.

Although Dybala has typically been deployed as a second striker of late, there may be a desire for Postecoglou to utilise his talents in an advanced midfield berth in his preferred 4-3-3 system, with the former Leicester City ace taking on that other playmaking role in the centre of the park.

To have two real dynamic weapons at his disposal would be a mouthwatering prospect for the ex-Celtic boss, with it seemingly hard to turn down the chance to land such a classy and experienced figure on the cheap.

'Surprised I was asked to open' – Ronchi

The New Zealand wicketkeeper batsman made 66 out of a total of 189 against a full-strength Indian attack in his team’s Champions Trophy warm-up match

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-20170:56

‘Surprised that an opener’s spot was available’ – Ronchi

New Zealand left for a tri-series in Ireland with a mind to see if Luke Ronchi could be an opener again, and, after a top score of 37 in four innings, he probably thought the experiment had run its course. But the 36-year old wicketkeeper was asked to bat at the top of the order again in a Champions Trophy warm-up game too and it caught him off guard.Neesham expects bouncer barrage

In two of the three warm-up matches of the Champions Trophy, teams have been able to chase 300-plus totals, even while running out of specialist batsmen. Australia beat Sri Lanka by two wickets and Pakistan beat Bangladesh by two wicket as well, highlighting the batting-friendly nature of the pitches
In light of that, New Zealand allrounder James Neesham believes the bouncer will be an invaluable tool in taking wickets and choking runs.
“I think that’s the nature of one-days these days. If you just bowl it up there and hope for the best a lot of the times, you get hit back over your head. The way the game’s evolving and the par scores are getting higher and higher, you do have to change your lengths more and the bouncer is one of those things”
Neesham’s team-mate Luke Ronchi, though, advocated batsmen not to explicitly trust the conditions.
“The wickets are getting flatter and I guess in a lot of places the boundaries come in a bit more and so higher scores are the norm. In saying that, the wicket might look amazing and then it might be a bit slower, might bounce more so you’re going to have to assess as you go along. We have blueprints to stick to and if you do that well then you will get those 330s, 350s.”

Ronchi’s ability to strike the ball cleanly can be an advantage early on, considering the first 10 overs are played with only two fielders on the boundary. There are a few obstacles, though. New Zealand already have a settled pair of openers – Martin Guptill, the joint-highest run-getter since the 2015 World Cup, and Tom Latham, who scored a century captaining the side in Ireland earlier this month. And Ronchi himself has not scored an ODI half-century since a record-breaking 170 not out in January 2015. Nevertheless, he did his best to show his credentials against a full-strength Indian bowling attack, scoring 66 out of a total of 189. His innings lasted 63 balls with six fours and two sixes.”I was a bit surprised when I first found out the opportunity was going to be there but it’s been pretty good,” Ronchi said. “Feeling comfortable with the way things have worked. It’s been nice to make a few runs and obviously you’d like to kick on. Helping the team get off to a bit of a start makes a difference.”Being aggressive is my natural way of batting. If I can take that aggressive approach to the bowlers, if we can get off to a flier, that’s brilliant, but obviously there’s also chances of me getting out early as well with that sort of approach. Hopefully, if it comes off, it comes off well and if it doesn’t, well I guess that’s my role and people understand that.”Ronchi thought “it should be pretty entertaining” if New Zealand couple him with Guptill and they both “kick off”. But in the event the team management prefers not to upset a settled opening partnership, he could get his chance in the middle order. The captain Kane Williamson holds the No. 3 spot and Ross Taylor, who did not play at the Oval on Sunday, will follow him. So Ronchi could conceivably bat at No. 5 but he will face competition from Neil Broom, who has made a hundred and four fifties in 12 innings since ending a three-year hiatus from international cricket in December 2016.New Zealand have a choice of finishers to assess as well. Corey Anderson, who has played only two ODIs this year, is back, fit and ready. Colin de Grandhomme can smack the ball long and he is a decent bowler in seamer-friendly conditions. And there is James Neesham, who came in at 116 for 6 against the Indians and made made 46 off 47 balls. “It probably wasn’t vintage ball-striking, I think I was dragging it around a little bit, but it’s always good to contribute runs coming in at the lower order; reminded me a bit of my first days in the black shirt.” His recent ones aren’t too bad either. He has averaged 34 in 10 matches, batting at Nos 6 and 7, with a strike-rate of 99.Neesham was hopeful of New Zealand’s chances in the Champions Trophy. “We have the Chappell-Hadlee in the cabinet and we took South Africa to deciding the one-day series. And the same thing with India over in India. So the results certainly haven’t been bad. But whenever you come to these pinnacle world events, you want to put your best foot forward. We’re definitely looking at winning the tournament, that’s for sure.”

Man United "contemplate" decision they don’t want to make

Donny Van de Beek looks set to leave Manchester United this summer, with clubs from six countries interested according to Dean Jones.

How long has Donny Van de Beek been at Manchester United?

The Dutchman looks set to call time on his three-year spell in Manchester this window.

The former Ajax man joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2020 for a fee reported to potentially rise to £39m, and has made 60 appearances across the three seasons, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Many expected that following the arrival of Van de Beek's former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to the 'Theatre of Dreams' that the Dutch international would finally be able to truly find his feet at United and showcase to everyone why he commanded such a large transfer fee, however, that never materialised.

The midfielder's time at the club has failed to reach the heights that many expected, with him struggling to establish himself under three separate managers. The 26-year-old has also failed to jump ahead of Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes during his time at Old Trafford, and injury problems have derailed any real chances to build up form, with the player having missed 52 games for the Red Devils, including 38 last campaign after a devastating knee injury ended his campaign in January.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek also had a disappointing loan spell during the second half of the 2021/22 season at Merseyside club Everton, where injuries once again hampered his time at the club, limiting him to just seven appearances for the Toffees.

Reports have suggested that the 26-year-old will be leaving United this summer, with a number of clubs interested. Speaking on the Football Terrace's Done Deal show, journalist Jones stated that the Red Devils might have to accept a loan move for the Dutch international.

"Van de Beek is eventually gonna get a route out the club, but they don’t even know which country it’s gonna be yet. He’s got interest in like five or six different countries but none of them want to front money for Van De Beek so are they going to have to contemplate a loan? They possibly will, yeah. I mean it’s absolutely not what they wanted but Van de Beek might have to end up going on loan.”

What club will Van de Beek join?

A number of clubs have been linked with the former Ajax man ahead of a potential move this summer.

A number of top sides in Italy are reportedly interested in Van de Beek, with Inter Milan, AS Roma and AC Milan being named as potential landing grounds. However, the midfielder isn't the first-choice target for any of these sides, which could prevent a transfer should the player want to make his move early in this window.

There are also Premier League sides interested, with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace all monitoring the attacking midfielders' situation. Palace previously failed in a bid to sign the Dutchman on loan in January 2021 when he opted for Everton instead. Ultimately, however, the best move for Van de Beek might be to leave the Premier League, as he has really struggled to adapt to the demands of the division.

A move back to the Netherlands may be the best idea for a player looking to get his career back on track. Both current champions Feyenoord and former club Ajax have explored the possibility of bringing the player to their respective clubs according to a report from 90min. The player enjoyed a very fruitful spell at Ajax before his move to United, making 175 appearances and recording 75 foal contributions, including some memorable goals in Ajax's historic 2018/19 Champions League campaign.

Whatever the midfielder's next move is, hopefully, it is the right one to reignite what was once such a promising career

Leeds "Keeping Tabs" On “Magnificent” £20k-p/w gem

Back to reality and back to Championship football. Leeds United has been here before and knows how to escape, but it is a completely different set-up to previous years.

The club was led by the popular and tactically generational Marcelo Bielsa in the scintillating title victory in the 2019/20 season.

Now, the club is attempting to heal from a highly dysfunctional season that oversaw three different managers, a clueless hierarchy, and a deserved relegation.

But, the confirmation of a new ownership will yield fresh ideas and a different vision. The 49ers have made an intelligent first step, appointing two-time Championship winner Daniel Farke to reverse Leeds’ tumultuous fortunes.

As the rebuild begins to source reliable performers to form a promotion push, Grady Diangana would be an astute start to the process.

What’s the latest on Grady Diangana to Leeds United?

According to The Express and Star, Leeds is said to be 'keeping tabs' on Diangana alongside fellow recently-relegated sides Leicester City and Southampton.

Carlos Corberan’s side is in need of balancing the books and the Whites have sensed an opportunity to bounce, and secure of one West Brom’s most valuable assets.

Last month, Nick Hammond was named as the club’s interim football advisor, and it’s assumed he will move away from Victor Orta’s investment in unproven and experimental signings, toward more well-known assets.

The exits of Robin Koch and Brenden Aaronson have already been confirmed to create space for a player that could massively improve the side for next season.

Who can Grady Diangana emulate at Leeds United?

The winger began his career in the West Ham youth system in 2010 and went on to make 21 appearances for the senior side. He then joined West Brom on loan in 2018 and recorded 15 goal involvements in the Championship.

The attacker was then sold on a permanent deal to the Midlands outfit to spark huge disappointment within the Hammers players and supporters. Then-captain Mark Noble poignantly remarked that he was “gutted, angry and sad” that the youngster had been allowed to so easily depart to underline how he was a force brimming with potential.

This season, Diangana has endured a less productive year, but he has still contributed a respectable seven goals and assists in 21 starts. Nevertheless, the £20k-per-week man has still averaged the second-most dribbles per game (1.1) and the third-highest key passes per game (1.3) in the Baggies squad.

Since Raphinha departed Elland Road for Barcelona last summer, Leeds has been craving a tricky and reliable wide presence. The Brazilian registered 29 goal involvements in 65 Premier League outings, as he established himself as one of the club’s most influential and important performers.

Raphinha Barcelona

He has continued this magisterial form in Catalonia as the £212k-per-week star ranks within the best 15% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for shot-creating actions per 90, xAG (expected assisted goals) per 90, and total shots per 90, showcasing his devastating attacking threat.

As a fellow left-footer who also typically operates on the flanks, Diangana could then prove to be the man to emulate the former Whites star's heroics at Elland Road, having been lauded as a player capable of producing moments of "magic", in the words of journalist Graeme Brown.

Raphinha’s void is seemingly yet to be sufficiently filled – as Leeds' recent drop into the second tier can attest to – so the signing of the “magnificent” Diangana, as described by Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie, could be the man to do so.
