Chappell: Maxwell needs to sort himself out

Australia’s selectors have lost patience with Glenn Maxwell, putting “the big show” on hiatus by dropping him for the ODI series in Sri Lanka and instructing him to work on evolving into a more consistent batsman. While he has been omitted from the team on numerous occasions, this is the first time Maxwell has been dropped from the limited-overs squad altogether since his debut in 2012. The decision follows a run in which he has averaged 11.80 in six innings in Australia’s last 10 ODIs.In the recent triangular series in the Caribbean, Maxwell made one useful contribution of 46* to help Australia into the final, but made only seven runs in his other three innings combined, alongside sporadic use as a spin bowler. Named to replace Jon Holland for Australia A against South Africa A in Brisbane this week, Maxwell promptly made a duck.Australia’s ODI squad for SL

At the age of 27, Maxwell is at something of a crossroads in terms of his future. Less than 12 months ago he was set to be a part of the Test squad for an Australian tour of Bangladesh, but now finds himself out of the picture. The selection chairman Rod Marsh stated that the panel wanted the opportunity to pick Maxwell for all formats, but needed him to ally consistency to his explosive talent.”If you want to play cricket for Australia, you should be consistent. If you are batsman, you should get consistent runs. If you are a bowler, you should get consistent wickets, or bowl well,” Marsh said. “As far as I am concerned, he has had a lot of chances. It got to that stage – we couldn’t go on any longer. Glenn has too many games where he doesn’t contribute with the bat. He is a hell of a good fieldsman, as we know, he is handy bowler, and, at his best, he is one of our first picked in a one-day team.”But if he is not making runs, then we have got to find a solution to it. The solution we have come up with is to put him back a step or two and see if he can get some runs there on a consistent basis. When you have got as much talent as that, you should be able to play all forms. He took it as well as what could be expected. No one likes being dropped but he understood the reasons and he also understands what he’s got to do.”Earlier this year, Maxwell denied he needed to go away and concentrate more on his batting, in the manner Steven Smith once did, in order to shore up his place in Australia’s plans and push for a Test berth. “I don’t think I can rest on just being a batsman,” Maxwell told . “I know Steve Smith went that way when he lost his Test spot, not really bowling much at all. But I don’t think I can go that direction. I have to keep working on both parts of my game and make sure they’re good enough.”Shaun Marsh has returned to the squad in place of Travis Head after missing the West Indies series due to the birth of his first child, while the NSW allrounder Moises Henriques has effectively come in for Maxwell after a productive IPL. “I hope he gets a game,” Marsh said of Henriques. “He’s been training the house down, really fit and I just hope his bad luck with injuries finishes.”

Rossouw-Amla debate in South Africa's problem of plenty

Rilee Rossouw has said that the team is unaffected by the talk going around on the decision to drop Hashim Amla from the XI

Firdose Moonda04-Oct-2016Rilee Rossouw was called up to South Africa’s ODI squad as a replacement for the injured AB de Villiers, ahead of the match against Ireland at the end of last month. He ended up replacing an ill Hashim Amla at the start of the Australia series last week. To say that Rossouw had big boots to fill is not an understatement. But try two fifties in two matches on for size, and it seems Rossouw could be a perfect fit.So, why the in-house handwringing from captain Faf du Plessis, who said he wanted Amla back in the XI but the selectors decided otherwise? “Hashim averages 52 in one-day cricket, so, for me, you can never replace that,” du Plessis said. “And if you miss one game for the flu, then it’s always the respect that you’re given to come back into the team. So, if it was my decision, I would definitely bring him back, and the same with the coach, but the selectors felt the combination at the top was working really well.”Perhaps, the stand-in captain just wants protocol to take precedence, and it seems he is not the only one. Television and social media commentators were aghast at Amla’s omission on Sunday, and there is every indication that he will be back for the third ODI. And where will that leave Rossouw, mentally and literally? “When we had our team culture camp, we spoke about our playing bubble. People can say what they want to say, as long as it doesn’t affect how we are going about our proceedings and how we play,” Rossouw said. “If Hashim comes back and I am playing, I will probably slot into the middle order.”Rossouw has batted at Nos. 4-7 in 18 of the 33 ODIs he has played, and come out at No. 3 eight times, so he is most familiar outside the top two but more successful in it. In the seven matches in which Rossouw has opened, he has averaged 39.57 – compared to an overall average of 35.53 – and scored one of his two hundreds and two of his seven fifties. He admitted he prefers getting to the crease as early as possible, and that the constant shifting up and down the order is challenging but possible with proper preparation.”I don’t mind anywhere in the top of the order. I prefer the new ball, while the Powerplay is still on so I can pierce the field and play good cricket shots,” he said. “It’s very difficult to change batting positions. It’s about how you prepare for where you are going to bat. If your preparation is good enough for the scenario out there, then your execution should follow.”Rossouw was fairly pleased with his execution so far in this series, barring the failure to get to three figures. “I am quite disappointed in that. In the first game, the reverse sweep is my shot, so if I go out to that, it is hard lines, but it’s my shot,” he said. “I am more disappointed with the way I went out at the Wanderers. It was quite soft.”At Centurion, Rossouw was out lbw, attempting a reverse sweep off the first ball he faced from Adam Zampa. At the Wanderers, he miscued a pull shot, and though the selection of both strokes is questionable, Rossouw insisted the second one was worse because he played it when he was closer to his century. “I have been hard on myself for that. I pride myself in making the most runs that I can. So 75 is all right, it’s good, but I am more interested in the three figures.”Without a hundred, Rossouw knows it will be more difficult to keep his place, especially in a line-up that should welcome Amla back at some stage, and with a crammed middle order. Du Plessis and JP Duminy have both found their touch, leaving little for David Miller and Farhaan Behardien to do, and Rossouw will have to displace one of them if he moves down. “It’s a tough gig, because if you are not performing, there’s a guy that can do the same job as you, if not better,” he said. “When you put on that shirt, you want to perform and do your best because you know there’s someone else who can take your spot.”At least South Africa have the problem of plenty, unlike their opposition, who now face three must-win matches if they are to win the series. Although Australia have appeared a little flat so far, Rossouw expects them to surge back, especially when they hear of South Africa’s intention to close out the series with two games to spare.”If they don’t bounce back, then they don’t deserve to be the best team in the world. I am sure they will come out fighting with big swings, and it’s up to us how we will counter-punch,” he said. “The guys had two serious performances and we are ready for the third game tomorrow, and we want to wrap it up. Australia are the best team in the world. If you give them a sniff, they come back hard. We want to finish this series tomorrow.”

Liverpool Talking To Agents Of £34m Midfielder

Liverpool have already held talks with the representatives of the young French midfielder Manu Kone ahead of the summer window opening.

How much does Manu Kone earn?

Liverpool's midfield has been an area which has come under fire this season with the Reds taking a while to find their stride in the Premier League.

Their inability to hit the ground running as they have done so in recent seasons gone by has meant Jurgen Klopp's men will have to settle for playing in Europe's second-string competition.

This summer will see a number of household names from Anfield depart with the likes of Roberto Firmino and James Milner all leaving the club.

Meaning, as well as a need to provide the manager with more quality in the middle of the park, there are also holes in the squad which will need to be replaced.

It seems as if the Reds could be set to see a new arrival in midfield come through the gates at Anfield over the coming weeks with reports suggesting a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion's Alexis Mac Allister is close to completion.

However, it does not seem as if they will settle for just the arrival of the World Cup-winning Argentine with talks reportedly ongoing over the £5k-per-week Kone.

Indeed, speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Frenchman's representatives have been in contact with Liverpool over a potential move:

(4:50) " Liverpool had conversations with the agents of Manu Kone recently, so there was a direct contact between Manu Kone's camp and Liverpool.

"And the expectation is for the price tag to be around €35m-€40m (£30m-£34m) so could be €35m with some add-ons. This is the feeling of sources close to the negotiation and this is why Liverpool are very well-informed."

Who is Manu Kone?

Although Kone is still just 22 years old, the Frenchman has established himself in the Bundesliga as a regular starter for Borussia Monchengladbach.

This season alone, Kone has racked up 30 appearances in the Bundesliga in which he started every game he was available (via Transfermarkt).

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Although the midfielder still has two years remaining on his current deal with the German outfit, it seems as if his time could be coming to an end at Gladbach.

Indeed, Liverpool are not the only side who have been credited with an interest in the Frenchman with the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain believed to be informed on his situation.

This is a midfielder who ranks in the top fourth percentile for successful take-ons over the last year and could provide a promising partnership alongside Mac Allister if they are both to arrive.

Both players have age on their side meaning they could form a partnership for years to come with Mac Allister's attacking prowess balancing well against Kone's defensive ability (via Fbref).

Given the transfer window has not even opened yet, this is certainly a promising opening week of the off-season for the Reds.

Spurs Could Land Moura Heir In £20k-p/w "Game-changer"

As Tottenham Hotspur brought their season to a close with a 4-1 victory over Leeds United on Sunday, departing winger Lucas Moura signed off in style with a stunning stoppage-time strike, with that proving the Brazilian's final involvement in a Spurs jersey.

While it may have been a rather frustrating campaign for the Brazilian, in truth, as he was restricted to just 19 appearances across all competitions, the former Paris Saint-Germain man left on high after weaving his way past a hapless home defence, before prodding in for his first and only goal of the season.

Just over five years on from the forward's £23m arrival from the Parc des Princes back in January 2018, the ageing speedster is set for pastures new amid his expiring contract, with the Lilywhites confirming that the 30-year-old won't be signing an extension.

Despite his limited impact of late, the £90k-per-week asset remains a beloved figure at N17 as a result of his Champions League heroics against Ajax back in 2019, memorably netting a stunning hat-trick to power Mauricio Pochettino's men into the final of Europe's premier competition.

Tottenham Hotspur's Lucas Moura

That remarkable treble is undoubtedly the standout moment of Moura's time in England, with the north London outfit now likely plotting to find a suitable replacement for a player who has racked up 66 goal involvements in 221 games.

Who could replace Moura at Spurs?

According to the latest reports, chairman Daniel Levy may well have already identified a dream heir to the 5 foot 8 menace in the form of on-loan Fulham star, Manor Solomon, with The Sun claiming that Spurs are among those interested in signing the Israeli international ahead of next season.

As per the piece, the 23-year-old – who joined the Cottagers on a season-long loan deal from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer – is set to be available on a free transfer this summer, hence the growing interest from clubs across Europe.

The 33-cap ace endured mixed fortunes at Craven Cottage in 2022/23 after missing much of the first half the season through injury, albeit while scoring four goals in four successive Premier League games in February and March, while also curling in a sensational effort in the FA Cup against Leeds amid that goalscoring hot streak.

Although the one-time Maccabi Petah Tikva man's impact was rather limited under Marco Silva – making just four league starts in total – he did show flashes of his quality at times, having been hailed as a "game-changer" by The Athletic's Peter Rutzler.

That ability to be the difference-maker could well see the 5 foot 7 sensation emulate the impact of Moura at Spurs, with the Brazilian having also been something of a 'supersub', according to journalist Jack Lang.

Equally, the pair also share a likeness due to their impressive dribbling prowess, with Solomon ranking in the top 6% among his European peers for successful take-ons after averaging 2.99 per 90, while Moura notably averaged 2.84 per 90 for that same metric during the 2021/22 campaign.

That should indicate that while Tottenham could well replace one diminutive dynamo for another with the addition of the Shakhtar ace, with the £20k-per-week gem potentially having the chance to be something of a surprise package for Levy and co next season.

Man Utd Could Repeat RVP Success With "Special" Dynamo

Manchester United are reportedly keen on raiding one of their Premier League rivals, with Erik ten Hag and co seemingly interested in Arsenal's teenage sensation, Ethan Nwaneri.

What's the latest on Nwaneri to Man United?

According to journalist David Ornstein – writing in his weekly column for The Athletic – the Red Devils are said to be among a handful of top-flight clubs who are 'monitoring' the 16-year-old, alongside Chelsea and Manchester City.

The report suggests that with the England youth international's schoolboy registration coming to an end next month, those raft of suitors are ready to pounce if the youngster does not agree fresh terms with the Gunners.

The London-born starlet notably came to wider attention after making his first-team debut for the Emirates outfit at the age of just 15 against Brentford back in September, becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in the Premier League in the process.

Who is Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri?

That record-breaking, senior bow unsurprisingly catapulted young Nwaneri into the public eye, with the 5 foot 5 dynamo notably earning hefty praise from senior teammate, Granit Xhaka, who lauded him as "very, very special" and a player with a "big future".

While Mikel Arteta's side will be hoping that 'future' lies in north London, as far as United is concerned it would represent a real coup to be able to poach such a talent from one of their long-time foes, with the promising midfielder having only recently impressed after scoring for his country in the ongoing U17 European Championship, taking his total tally at that age group to eight goals in only 14 outings.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri

The diminutive ace – who also has six goals and four assists to his name for the Gunners at youth level this season – would not be the first highly-rated talent to trade life at Arsenal for the Theatre of Dreams, with the playmaker potentially set to follow in the footsteps of Robin van Persie.

Hope will be that Ten Hag can replicate the club's masterclass with regard to the signing of his compatriot back in 2012, with Van Persie having left the Emirates to join Sir Alex Ferguson's side on a £24m deal.

That controversial switch – which came amid the striker's expiring contract at his previous employers – ultimately paid dividends for both the Dutchman and the Red Devils, as the ruthless marksman bagged 26 league goals during his debut season in Manchester to help fire the club to the title.

Hailed as "unbelievable" by the legendary Ferguson, the former Netherlands international would ultimately go on to net just 22 top-flight goals across the next two seasons combined before departing for Fenerbahce, albeit with his switch from the capital having undoubtedly paid off such was his immediate impact.

While in the case of Nwaneri, it may take time for the precocious teen to make his mark on United's first-team ranks, it would certainly please the Old Trafford faithful to be able to yet again prise a high-profile gem from the Gunners, following the success of Van Persie.

Uncapped West Indians hungry to make their mark

The uncapped West Indians in the T20I squad – Kesrick Williams, Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran – have expressed their desire to make a mark in international cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Sep-2016

Rovman Powell made 228 runs in 12 innings for Jamaica Tallawahs at the CPL•CPL/Sportsfile

Fast bowler Kesrick Williams, allrounder Rovman Powell and wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran, the uncapped players in West Indies’ T20 squad for the three-match series against Pakistan in the UAE, have spoken of their desire to make their mark in international cricket.”It is really fantastic to be called up for the West Indies team; something every young man would dream about, to play international cricket,” Williams said on the eve of the first T20I. “The determination is there, I am just ready to go, execute, and put my name out there in international cricket.”Pooran was excited at the prospect of playing with World T20 winners such as his captain Carlos Brathwaite. “It’s a dream come true,” he said. “I always thought I will play for West Indies when I was 21. I am 20 at the moment. While I was a youngster, I watched these guys win two World Cups. It’s an amazing achievement for me. Just trying to take the opportunity and make the full use of it.”Powell also said representing West Indies was a “dream”. “Getting the call from Courtney Browne was one of the happiest days of my life,” he said. “Representing West Indies at any level is something that I dream about. The dream has come to a reality.”While Williams did not bat or bowl in the warm-up match against an Emirates Cricket Board XI on Tuesday, Powell and Pooran staked their claim for spots in the opening T20I. They overcame a top-order wobble with a 52-run partnership for the fifth wicket at a run rate of 10.40. Pooran was the leader, scoring seven boundaries, of which two sailed out of the ground.”That innings was needed by me for my self-confidence and for the team,” Pooran said. “It [The sixes] was satisfying. I am a bit disappointed that I didn’t get more. I will take it at the end of the day.”Powell said that having clarity was key to that stand. “The thought process was simple, just get used to the conditions in Dubai,” he said. “I just stuck to the basics, when the ball comes in my area, I get a start and expand my range.”Pooran had come into the spotlight when he played the innings of the Under-19 World Cup at the same venue in 2014. He struck 143 off 160 balls, which lifted West Indies 70 for 8 to 208. Of the 23 boundaries in West Indies’ innings, Pooran hit 20.”I have good memories of Dubai. I expect to do something special again here. I am looking forward to the challenge,” he said.Powell, who has also been selected in the West Indies A squad for the List A matches in Sri Lanka, was wary of high expectations. “When you set targets and set expectations, sometimes you set up for failures,” he said. “What I do is try to play the conditions.”

Eddie Howe Wants Newcastle To Sign £150k-p/w "Monster"

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is a huge fan of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips and wants the club to pursue a possible transfer this summer.

The Magpies completed their brilliant 2022/23 Premier League season with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. They will compete in the Champions League next season and appear to be on the hunt for additions in the transfer window this summer.

What's the latest news on Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle?

According to Football Transfers correspondent Steve Kay, Howe wants both Phillips and Leicester City midfielder James Maddison to join the club this summer.

Kay stated that Manchester City are "open to selling" Phillips, but it remains to be seen if the midfielder will stay at the Etihad and fight for his place or choose to join Newcastle where the promise of game time could be greater.

Due to the Magpies' top-four finish, Phillips would still be able to compete in the Champions League next season. Maddison is another top target, although Tottenham are also interested but cannot offer the chance to play in Europe's prestigious knockout competition.

Kay reports that Maddison "is way up on the list" and after being "in contact with his camp for a long time, he’s a big possibility." Speaking exclusively to NUFC Blog regarding the two, Football Transfers correspondent Steve Kay said:

"Eddie Howe is a big, big fan of Kalvin Phillips. City are open to selling and Howe would like to bring him in to add Premier League experience.

"He’s still only 27, can fill a position Newcastle are looking to improve and Howe believes he can be another strong voice in the dressing room, helping younger players develop too."

"Newcastle are looking for proven players and that brings me to James Maddison, who is way up on the list. I think he’ll sign. They’ve been in contact with his camp for a long time. He’s a big possibility.

"Tottenham are interested in Maddison. However, he wants Champions League football – something Spurs can’t offer now – so everything points to Newcastle at the minute. They are the favourites."

How many appearances has Kalvin Phillips made this season?

Due to injury issues and Pep Guardiola's preference, the 27-year-old made just 21 appearances in all competitions, including only 12 appearances in the Premier League. His contributions this season amounted to just 593 minutes, according to Transfermarkt.

In total, he missed 11 games through injury this season, and yet he has emerged as a target for Newcastle. Despite his injury struggles, Phillips, dubbed by Yannick Bolasie as a "monster", remains a talented midfielder that could still be a valuable addition to the Newcastle squad.

The £150,000-a-week England international has plenty of top-flight experience and continues to be a regular in Gareth Southgate's international squad, turning out on 26 occasions now, so the Magpies could make a shrewd move by signing Phillips, and by the looks of it, it could be one to watch with Howe a fan.

Tottenham: Slot Already Planning Feyenoord Raid For Spurs

Tottenham manager target Arne Slot apparently plans to bring "trusted" Feyenoord coaches Marino Pusic and Sipke Hulsoff with him to Spurs, a move which could "complicate" matters.

What's the latest Spurs manager news?

The 44-year-old is reliably believed to be a top Spurs manager target as chairman Daniel Levy steps up his search for Antonio Conte's successor, with the Italian departing two months ago.

Slot is apparently eager to make the move to north London but other managerial candidates, like Luis Enrique and Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim, aren't completely out of the running either.

Other names in the frame include Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou and Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi, with the latter coach chasing European football at the Amex.

However, Slot is currently the overwhelming favourite, according to reports, with The Daily Mail sharing an update on his intentions in regards to joining Spurs.

Feyenoord's Arne Slot

According to their information, Slot apparently "plans" to bring "trusted" coaches Pusic and Hulsoff to north London from Feyenoord – a stance which could well force Spurs to pay more for the tactician.

Indeed, it is believed the Dutch champions will demand over the reported £6 million fee Feyenoord originally wanted due to Slot's desire to take both Pusic and Hulsoff.

There are apparently growing tensions behind-the-scenes overt Slot's future, with a key meeting planned between both Feyenoord and his agent, Rafaela Pimenta.

Slot's plot to steal away Pusic and Hulsoff could actually "complicate" his departure, according to The Mail, with Feyenoord also "angry" given they have committed to his summer transfer targets.

It appears Tottenham are rustling a few feathers in their attempts to prise away the Dutchman and it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Who is Arne Slot?

The tactician, fresh off his first ever Eredivisie title win, also reached a UEFA Europa Conference League final last year and narrowly missed out to Jose Mourinho's Roma.

Slot is amassing quite the reputation abroad and his stock has never been higher, with Dutch football journalist Marcel van der Kraan even likening him to Pep Guardiola for his style of play.

He explained to talkSPORT:

"The best thing about Arne Slot is that he is probably the best attacking coach I have seen in the last 35-40 years at Feyenoord."He is very similar to Pep Guardiola, his ideas are very similar, he is a massive fan of Pep and he plays the same time."He goes ultra-attacking, he is almost like a maniac. Not on the touchline but it is fantastic to see how he has turned an average side into a wonderful attacking machine."
