Ipswich plotting move for “extraordinary" ace who would fix Broadhead issue

Ipswich Town supporters would have been understandably despondent when news filtered through that Nathan Broadhead had picked up a serious injury in pre-season training, with the former Everton youth player turned Tractor Boys star now ruled out of action for a number of months.

Broadhead's 13 goals in Championship action last season were key in helping his side get over the line and win automatic promotion come the end of the dramatic 46-game schedule, but Kieran McKenna will now have to make do without the 26-year-old gem operating down the left flank for the time being.

To fix the issue of the exciting Welshman now being sidelined, the new Premier League outfit could attempt to recruit this promising ace, who has just been relegated back down to the second tier.

Ipswich plotting move for Burnley ace

According to a report by Football Insider, McKenna and Co are keen on adding Burnley attacker Wilson Odobert to their roster this off-season, acting potentially as a quickfire replacement for the now injury-stricken Broadhead.

The report further explains that Ipswich's pursuit for the young Clarets winger is also down to the lack of success the Tractor Boys faced in the transfer market surrounding a deal to land Jaden Philogene-Bidace, with the tricky ex-Hull City man relocating to Villa Park in the end over making the move to Portman Road.

The Burnley number 47 could well offer Ipswich another bright spark in attack next season if signed, therefore, having stylishly gone about his business at Turf Moor last campaign, even when the Clarets were constantly swamped in a battle against the drop.

Odobert will hope he can sign on the dotted line in Suffolk and help his new employers stay put in the Premier League, allowing McKenna to have fewer selection headaches to worry about, with Broadhead in the Portman Road treatment room.

What Odobert can offer Ipswich

Broadhead hasn't ever really been given the opportunity to cut his teeth in the men's game at the very top of English football yet, with just one solitary professional appearance being gifted to him in the Premier League when on the books at Everton.

On the contrary, the £10k-per-week forward – as per Capology – now has a full top-flight campaign under his belt, and although his side did fall through the relegation trap door come the end of it all, the French winger was a constant source of entertainment and thrills for the Turf Moor faithful during bleak times.

Odobert would help himself to three goals and two assists from 29 games in total for the Clarets in the top division, with Ipswich hopeful he can explode into life even further if he does take the plunge to play in Suffolk, with sublime long-range strikes like the one against Fulham above in his back pocket.

Obviously, filling in for Broadhead is going to be a tough ask, especially when you consider the ex-Everton youngster hit double figures for goals last season, but Odobert will be up for testing himself in a new environment.

He could come into his own even more next to the likes of fellow raw young talents in Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson who have also joined the building this summer.

Described as being an "extraordinary" talent by football journalist Andrés Onrubia Ramos when he was still playing in his native France with Troyes, McKenna will hope signing Odobert is a masterstroke purchase if pulled off, with Broadhead then returning into the thick of it down the line with competition for his spot in place.

Los Blancos decided not to sign a replacement for Kroos in the summer, instead choosing to stick with their current midfield options. But after an inconsistent start to the 2024-25 campaign, the club have reportedly ramped up their interest in Wirtz and will keep a close eye on the 21-year-old, with a view to signing him next summer.

Replacing Kroos was always going to be a tough challenge, but a midfield featuring Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos has left Carlo Ancelotti without a dynamic, ball-playing central player. This concern has been highlighted by staff at the club, according to , with Madrid's interest in Wirtz intensifying in recent months as a result.

Real Madrid will monitor Wirtz's performance in the Champions League to gauge his ability, considering he only played in the Europa League last year. Early scouting reports on the Germany international are positive, though, and he's impressed in Europe with three goals in four games this season.

Who is Abdul Samad, the new boy in the Sunrisers Hyderabad XI?

Here’s a factfile on the latest IPL debutant

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Sep-2020

BCCI

Who is Abdul Samad?
A big-hitting batsman who can also bowl quickish legspin, Samad was one of the breakout stars of the 2019-20 Indian domestic season. Nobody struck more sixes than his 36 for Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy, and in all he hit 592 runs in 17 innings at an eye-popping strike rate of nearly 113.Mentored by Irfan Pathan, the J&K player-cum-mentor, and endorsed by Milap Mewada, the coach, Samad became the fourth player from J&K to break into the IPL after Parvez Rasool, Mansoor Dar and Rasikh Salam, when Sunrisers snapped him up for his base price of INR 20 lakh in the December 2019 auction. What about Pathan’s role in his development?
Pathan and Mewada first spotted Samad as a 16-year-old in 2018, at a trial in Jammu. His driving on the up against quicks bowling from 18 yards out had Pathan digging up Samad’s scores in districts cricket.ALSO READ: Will big-hitting Abdul Samad make it to the big time?”He was effortlessly hitting the ball,” Pathan told ESPNcricinfo during the most recent domestic season. “But when I looked through his numbers, he didn’t have one 50-plus score. I took him aside and told him he would be put in the probables, but he needed to work on preserving his wicket. It’s not about six-hitting.What is his USP?
Hitting sixes. It was on display in the Ranji Trophy. It was also on display in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy when he smacked four sixes off Piyush Chawla in Jaipur. He was also at it in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, making rapid runs in the middle order on tough, spin-friendly pitches in Surat. His cameos – 29 off 10 balls against Odisha, 28* off 13 against Nagaland, and 32* off 24 balls against Saurashtra – all contributed to victories for J&K.When VVS Laxman, Sunrisers’ mentor, was looking for a middle-order finisher for his franchise, Mewada, who was Laxman’s Under-19 team-mate many moons ago, recommended Samad for the role.Does he have the ability to build an innings too?
Samad has showed signs of it in the Ranji Trophy. When J&K were reduced to 131 for 4 in their second innings against Maharashtra on a green track in Pune, he absorbed the pressure and averted a collapse, scoring 78 off 89 balls. His contribution was central to J&K stretching their lead to 363 and eventually winning the game. Samad also stepped up against a quality Karnataka attack, making 43 off 50 balls in the Ranji quarter-final at home, but J&K narrowly fell short of the first-innings lead and eventually lost the game.In a slightly iffy Sunrisers middle order, he may have to play the dual role of building an innings as well as finishing depending on the game-scenario and conditions in IPL 2020.

Poch replacement: Chelsea currently eyeing Jose Mourinho 2.0

The 2023/24 season has finally come to a close for Chelsea Football Club, and whilst it did not end up as a campaign to remember for Blues fans, they managed to secure European football at the death.

Their form towards the back end of the season was impressive, and manager Mauricio Pochettino helped his side to sixth in the Premier League. They will have European football at the club once again, after a season of just domestic football.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, despite their positive end to the season, the news broke on Tuesday that the club would part ways with manager Pochettino. The former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur boss signed a two-year deal with the option of a third but was removed from his post following the climax of the season.

Since then, rumours have been flying about who the Blues will appoint as Pochettino’s replacement. They have been heavily linked with Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, although he is thought to be waiting for the Manchester United job to become available.

According to The Mirror journalist Darren Lewis, other names on Chelsea’s list are thought to include Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Championship-winning Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca.

However, there is one other name who could well be in the running for the hot seat at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s managerial plans for the summer

The person in question here is former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who recently left his post with the Seagulls after just under two years in charge at the Amex Stadium.

According to John Percy and Matt Law of The Telegraph, Chelsea’s fourth mystery candidate for the vacant post at Stamford Bridge could well be Italian De Zerbi. An approach for him has not been ruled out, although he is 'considered by sources to be an outlier in the race' to become the new Chelsea manager.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Although the former Sassuolo boss is currently without a club, Percy and Law explain that Brighton would still be owed £5m for any club that wishes to appoint De Zerbi, yet that is far less than the £15m that he would have cost before his decision to leave the club.

According to Italian journalist Daniele Longo of Calcio Mercato, there are other European heavyweights interested in acquiring De Zerbi’s services. Namely, they are Portuguese side FC Porto and French outfit Marseille. However, Longo explains that De Zerbi prefers to wait for a Premier League move, an opportunity which Chelsea could provide him.

How De Zerbi would benefit Chelsea

Chelsea’s owner, Todd Boehly, is an incredibly demanding figure who expects immediate success, which has largely been the downfall of the previous Chelsea managers under him. Take Pochettino as an example; just simply reaching the Carabao Cup final was ultimately not good enough, and he was sacked.

In De Zerbi, they would have a manager who can have an immediate impact. In his first season at Brighton, the Italian coached his side to sixth in the Premier League, earning European football.

Whilst he did not do as well in season two on the South Coast, given the lack of money he had to spend, De Zerbi is someone who could come in and have an instant impact; exactly what Boehly needs from his manager, given the money spent.

In fact, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand compared De Zerbi to a very successful Chelsea manager of yesteryear, Jose Mourinho. Like Mourinho, Ferdinand explained how De Zerbi is “making players feel a million dollars”, following a conversation with former teammate Danny Welbeck, who has thrived under De Zerbi at Brighton.

In chatting to Welbeck – and Seagulls teammate Adam Lallana – Ferdinand claims to have “never seen the duo speak in such glowing terms about a manager”, which is impressive given they played under the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klopp.

Given his charisma, ability as a manager and the potential to have an immediate impact, De Zerbi could be the perfect replacement for Pochettino at Chelsea. Whilst he is not reportedly high up on the list of suitors at the minute, it would be a cheap and easy deal to do, and bringing in a manager so highly thought of, could be a masterstroke for Chelsea.

The previous ownership regime – under Roman Abrahmovic – secured almost immediate success with the appointment of Mourinho, the enigmatic Portuguese winning two league titles in his first two seasons at the club after arriving in 2004.

With the chance to land another relatively youthful, charismatic figure in the form of De Zerbi, the hope will be that similar honours are to follow.

Birmingham now eyeing "superb" manager who says he learned from Rooney

After parting ways with Gary Rowett after an unsuccessful interim period in charge, Birmingham City have reportedly added a fresh face to their managerial shortlist in case Tony Mowbray does not take the reigns next season.

Birmingham manager news

Birmingham's season ultimately ended in Championship relegation in what represents a disaster considering where they found themselves earlier in the campaign. Under John Eustace, they were on course to compete for a place in the play-offs, but opted to hire Wayne Rooney nonetheless in a decision they quickly regretted.

Then turning to Mowbray after Rooney's disaster, the former Sunderland boss was forced to make way for Rowett, so the Blues find themselves back at square one.

Left in search of a new manager, Birmingham have already been linked with the likes of former boss Steve Bruce, who has more than enough experience to guide them back to the Championship at the first time of asking. But now it seems as though the club are aiming for a younger candidate.

Report: Birmingham hierarchy have changed their mind about Rowett’s future

A twist has emerged from what club chiefs were initially hoping for.

ByHenry Jackson May 3, 2024

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Birmingham have shortlisted Liam Rosenior for their managerial role following his shock departure from Hull City. Rosenior was nominated for the Championship's Manager of Season award but, ultimately, his failure to secure a place in the play-offs led to Hull's decision to sack him much to the surprise of many.

The 39-year-old would have to get off to a quick start at St Andrew's to avoid any Rooney comparisons, however, especially after claiming to have learned from the Manchester United legend during their time in the Derby County dugout together.

Rosenior told Derby's official website: “Wayne is intelligent with people. He cares about them as well and he has been able to show that side to him in such a difficult time.

"He doesn’t change when he’s doing a press conference, when he is doing a team talk or when he is addressing the staff in terms of a tough moment when the club went into administration. I have learnt so much from Wayne in terms of how he has dealt with the pressure of the situation we are in.”

Birmingham must act swiftly to land "superb" Rosenior

The surprise over Hull's decision to part ways with Rosenior paints the picture of the job he was doing for the Tigers, which very nearly led them into the Championship's top six. Sacked nonetheless, Birmingham can now take full advantage to land the type of young manager they believed they were getting when Rooney arrived.

It was during his time at Hull that Rosenior earned plenty of praise, including from former player and Arsenal legend Ray Parlour, who heaped praise on the former full back: "Liam Rosenior is doing a superb job at Hull.

"I actually think he is underrated as a coach – he is certainly getting the best out of the players. You could see last season the players believed in him, but this season they have shown more consistency and quality, and they are now right in the mix to get a play-off spot at the end of this season."

Chris Lynn's 55-ball 113 takes Lahore Qalandars to maiden semi-final

A blazing fifty by Zaman was followed by Lynn’s match-clinching ton, the first-ever by a Qalandars batsman in the tournament

The Report by Peter Della Penna15-Mar-2020How the game played outThe dynamic opening duo of Fakhar Zaman and Chris Lynn terrorised a second-string Multan Sultans bowling unit, pummeling 72 runs in the powerplay during a 100-run partnership to mow down a target of 187 as Lahore Qalandars clinched their first-ever playoff berth in the fifth season of the Pakistan Super League with a nine-wicket win. A blazing half-century by Zaman was followed by Lynn’s match-clinching ton, the first-ever by a Qalandars batsman in their five-year history in the tournament.Qalandars were off to a shaky start again early in the tournament this season after losing their first three matches but a stunning resurgence propelled in their fourth match by the ferocious hitting of Ben Dunk dug them out of the cellar. The pyrotechnics of Zaman and Lynn in their season finale against Sultans ensured Dunk’s prior efforts were not in vain. Bouncing back from a 10-wicket drubbing at the hands of Karachi Kings on Thursday, Zaman and Lynn seized on the fact that Sultans could afford to rest several of their frontline bowlers after having clinched first place outright 48 hours earlier.Zaman led the initial onslaught, bringing up a 25-ball half-century during a brutal seventh over assault on Moeen Ali’s offspin. After Zaman was stumped following a charge gone awry to Usman Qadir’s legspin in the 9th, Lynn took centrestage with more belligerent hitting. The Australian brought up a 22-ball half-century in the 10th over swatting Ravi Bopara over cow corner for six. The maximum barrage continued against Khushdil Shah in the 14th, who was carted for back-to-back straight sixes to take Lynn into the 80s. Another heave over cow corner off Bilawal Bhatti took him to 98 before a pair of singles off Junaid Khan brought up the first century by a Qalandars batsman in their five-year history. Lynn then ended the match by heaving Ali Shafiq twice over the leg side rope in the 19th to seal his side’s maiden playoff appearance with seven balls to spare.Turning pointMomentum was with Sultans after a sloppy bowling display in the latter half of the first innings allowed Khushdil to feast his way to an unbeaten 70 off 29 balls. But Zaman and Lynn stole it right back with their thunderous powerplay. A consistent short ball plan to Zaman failed repeatedly as he hooked and pulled for boundaries at will. However, the most savage treatment by Zaman was meted out immediately after the first six when he attacked Ali in the seventh over. He charged Ali’s second ball, driving him hard over mid-off for six. An attempted to bowl fuller, flatter and wider next ball was negated when Zaman swept him through the leg side for four. Two balls later, Zaman was galloping down the wicket again to lift Ali over long-on for another six. At 89 for 0 with the required run rate down to 7.53, Sultans were left completely deflated.Star of the dayLynn has had a monster reputation on the T20 franchise circuit over the last several years, particularly in the Caribbean Premier League and Big Bash. But amazingly, this performance was his first century in T20 franchise cricket outside of Australia. There was a great maturity to the knock as well. With Zaman applying the early pressure, Lynn was content to rotate the strike and only attack when there was a genuine loose ball. Though he had several close shaves early on with a couple of inside edges missing the stumps on the way to the fine leg boundary, Lynn got his eye locked in midway through the chase and from there on showed no mercy. The big missThe arsenal of bowling guns were rested today by Sultans. The first time these two sides played in their opening match of the season, Imran Tahir was named Man of the Match for his two key wickets while Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Irfan and Shahid Afridi were no less impactful in a match that was clinched with 29 balls to spare chasing a target of 139. Their collective absence was noticeable in the toothless display produced by much of the Sultans bowling unit that took the field on Sunday afternoon.Where the teams standSultans could afford to rest all of those aforementioned names because they had already clinched first place and the No. 1 seed in the PSL playoffs regardless of today’s result, though the loss kept them on 14 points. Barring a miracle, they will play Peshawar Zalmi in one semi-final unless Quetta Gladiators beat Karachi Kings and erase a monumental net-run-rate deficit in the process to steal fourth place from Zalmi. Qalandars end the league phase in third place on ten points and will meet Karachi Kings in the other semi-final on Tuesday.
