4.30pm: Full house

4.00pm: Bonus point standings

Doesn’t look like it will need to be the deciding factor given the time remaining, but we’ve now had 100 overs from both sides so have the bonus points confirmed:Queensland: 1.48
New South Wales 0.3So if it was a draw, Queensland would take the title. Their leading has now extended beyond a hundred. They aren’t in any rush yet. The forecast says a chance of a shower tomorrow but Sunday and Monday look fine.

3.00pm: Starc takes one, but more needed

Mitchell Starc struck shortly after tea when he had Usman Khawaja caught down the leg side, much to the Queensland captain’s frustration. The ball was still new and it was a small opening for New South Wales but, as yet, they have not been able to claim another. Marnus Labuschagne remains rock solid and there is plenty of batting left for Queensland.

2.10pm: Tea – Queensland 2 for 211

Marnus Labuschagne’s century – his fourth of the Shield season and third against New South Wales – has consolidated Queensland’s position on the second day and they already have a healthy lead with plenty of power to add. It has been another masterful display from Labuschage who has dealt with everything the New South Wales attack has tried. Captain Usman Khawaja has played confidently since arriving at the fall of Bryce Street’s wicket with runs coming at a brisker rate during the afternoon. The new ball became available shortly before the break and it could already be New South Wales’ last chance of staying in the game.”One of the best Shield hundreds you’ll see,” Darren Lehmann says of Labuschagne’s innings on Fox CricketAnd in case you needed it, here’s a reminder of Labuschagne’s Shield season:ESPNcricinfo Ltd

1.15pm: Finally, a breakthrough

Bryce Street again showed his ability to bat a long time•Getty Images

It has taken a long time, but New South Wales their second wicket with Nathan Lyon ended Bryce Street’s long innings when the left hander edged low to slip having faced 203 balls for his 46. With the new ball due in 10 overs it could give the visitors the lift their desperately need to stay in the game although they have to get past Marnus Labuschagne as he approaches another century. On the atmosphere: “This is the first major crowd I’ve played in front of in a Shield game so walking off to that kind of ovation was pretty cool, pretty awesome, bit annoyed it was only for 46. Even how the crowd were yesterday when we were bowling, walking off at tea, walking off after we bowled them out, it’s goosebumps stuff. On his battle with Starc and Lyon: “We’ve had a running battled, played each other three times and he’s managed to hit me every single game. He’s always good for one and he badged me last game as well. This wicket is really slow so it’s a bit harder for him but he still managed to get it done.”Gaz [Lyon] has always tried to make me talk. There’s nothing I’d love more than to talk to a guy with 400 Test wickets but I don’t want to be dragged out of my comfort zone, stay in my own little bubble, so tried to keep quiet and he got even angrier. Why he laughed when hit from Starc: “The three blows, all in the same spot, was almost like a funny moment and also, I guess, trying not to show you are intimidated a little bit. He was bowling far pace at one moment, and I was like ‘don’t back out, don’t give him an inch, don’t show you are scared.’ “

11.30am: Lunch – Queensland 1 for 119

Marnus Labuschagne sweeps•Getty Images

Queensland are looking very strong. They have got through the morning session without losing a wicket, although New South Wales will bowl worse and get more rewards. There has been less assistance for the quicks than the first morning but some significant turn for Nathan Lyon. The paltry first-innings total looks like it will be very costly, because batting last on this surface with the spin likely on offer could be very tricky.Bryce Street, given a life on 27, has gone about his business in his own style – he made just 20 runs during the sessions but rate of scoring is now issue for Queensland. They can wear the bowlers down and look to cash in later, something Street is ideal at setting up. Marnus Labuschagne, meanwhile, looks in the mood to go big again. It’s a long way back for New South Wales from here

10.30am: Wicketless hour

It hasn’t been without a few alarms, but Queensland have got through the first hour without losing a wicket. Marnus Labuschagne has continued his fine season against New South Wales (well, in fact, most teams) with a 93-ball fifty to follow centuries in the previous two meetings. Bryce Street was dropped on 27 by Kurtis Patterson at second slip off the luckless Nathan Lyon who has bowled beautifully without reward. You still sense that wickets could fall in a cluster, but New South Wales need that to happen sooner rather than later.

10.00am: Labuschagne v Lyon

It is proving a terrific contest between two of Australia’s best. Marnus Labuschagne is settling into his work but Nathan Lyon is trying to work him over. Against one delivery Labuschagne opted to pad the ball which brought a loud lbw shout with Lyon then suggesting Labuschagne was one of the best batsmen in the world so should use his bat. He then followed up with a reverse sweep and a conventional sweep. At the other end Josh Hazlewood has been good as well. In the first over the day he found the edge of Bryce Street with a very full delivery but somehow it flew between the keeper and first slip. New South Wales need every chance to go to hand.

9.30am: New South Wales must strike early

Welcome back to coverage of the Sheffield Shield final. It was all Queensland on the opening day and they are in a very strong position. There is some help in the surface for pace and spin – the turn Nathan Lyon got yesterday evening suggested a chase could be tricky – but New South Wales have to keep any deficit manageable. Bryce Street, who had a lively contest with Mitchell Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne did a very good job to get through to the close and Queensland will have visions of only batting once. That, though, is still a long way off against a strong NSW attack. You can catch up with how the first day played out here.

Ipswich plotting move for “extraordinary" ace who would fix Broadhead issue

Ipswich Town supporters would have been understandably despondent when news filtered through that Nathan Broadhead had picked up a serious injury in pre-season training, with the former Everton youth player turned Tractor Boys star now ruled out of action for a number of months.

Broadhead's 13 goals in Championship action last season were key in helping his side get over the line and win automatic promotion come the end of the dramatic 46-game schedule, but Kieran McKenna will now have to make do without the 26-year-old gem operating down the left flank for the time being.

To fix the issue of the exciting Welshman now being sidelined, the new Premier League outfit could attempt to recruit this promising ace, who has just been relegated back down to the second tier.

Ipswich plotting move for Burnley ace

According to a report by Football Insider, McKenna and Co are keen on adding Burnley attacker Wilson Odobert to their roster this off-season, acting potentially as a quickfire replacement for the now injury-stricken Broadhead.

The report further explains that Ipswich's pursuit for the young Clarets winger is also down to the lack of success the Tractor Boys faced in the transfer market surrounding a deal to land Jaden Philogene-Bidace, with the tricky ex-Hull City man relocating to Villa Park in the end over making the move to Portman Road.

The Burnley number 47 could well offer Ipswich another bright spark in attack next season if signed, therefore, having stylishly gone about his business at Turf Moor last campaign, even when the Clarets were constantly swamped in a battle against the drop.

Odobert will hope he can sign on the dotted line in Suffolk and help his new employers stay put in the Premier League, allowing McKenna to have fewer selection headaches to worry about, with Broadhead in the Portman Road treatment room.

What Odobert can offer Ipswich

Broadhead hasn't ever really been given the opportunity to cut his teeth in the men's game at the very top of English football yet, with just one solitary professional appearance being gifted to him in the Premier League when on the books at Everton.

On the contrary, the £10k-per-week forward – as per Capology – now has a full top-flight campaign under his belt, and although his side did fall through the relegation trap door come the end of it all, the French winger was a constant source of entertainment and thrills for the Turf Moor faithful during bleak times.

Odobert would help himself to three goals and two assists from 29 games in total for the Clarets in the top division, with Ipswich hopeful he can explode into life even further if he does take the plunge to play in Suffolk, with sublime long-range strikes like the one against Fulham above in his back pocket.

Obviously, filling in for Broadhead is going to be a tough ask, especially when you consider the ex-Everton youngster hit double figures for goals last season, but Odobert will be up for testing himself in a new environment.

He could come into his own even more next to the likes of fellow raw young talents in Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson who have also joined the building this summer.

Described as being an "extraordinary" talent by football journalist Andrés Onrubia Ramos when he was still playing in his native France with Troyes, McKenna will hope signing Odobert is a masterstroke purchase if pulled off, with Broadhead then returning into the thick of it down the line with competition for his spot in place.

Imagine him & Hutchinson: Ipswich now leading race for “ridiculous” star

Ipswich Town could further strengthen their attack with this big purchase.

Los Blancos decided not to sign a replacement for Kroos in the summer, instead choosing to stick with their current midfield options. But after an inconsistent start to the 2024-25 campaign, the club have reportedly ramped up their interest in Wirtz and will keep a close eye on the 21-year-old, with a view to signing him next summer.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Replacing Kroos was always going to be a tough challenge, but a midfield featuring Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos has left Carlo Ancelotti without a dynamic, ball-playing central player. This concern has been highlighted by staff at the club, according to , with Madrid's interest in Wirtz intensifying in recent months as a result.

DID YOU KNOW?

Real Madrid will monitor Wirtz's performance in the Champions League to gauge his ability, considering he only played in the Europa League last year. Early scouting reports on the Germany international are positive, though, and he's impressed in Europe with three goals in four games this season.

It's likely to be another exciting summer for Real Madrid, with the club also linked with moves for full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alphonso Davies. However, there may be some regrets over the decision not to add a Kroos-like midfielder to their ranks this year after seeing Barcelona storm to the top of La Liga.

Liverpool open talks to sign "excellent" £14k-p/w Ligue 1 player for Slot

Arne Slot has officially got his Liverpool tenure underway and soon enough, he could have his first signing with reports suggesting that the Reds have opened talks to welcome a midfield reinforcement this summer.

Liverpool transfer news

Those in Merseyside could be in for a busy summer as they look to transition into a new era without Jurgen Klopp for the first time in almost a decade. As Michael Edwards returns with more responsibility than ever though, Liverpool are certainly in good hands. The returning club chief has already set his sights on a number of fresh faces too, which includes recent Champions League winners Aurelien Tchouameni and Brazilian winger Rodrygo.

It may be a more familiar target that the Reds welcome this summer. According to TuttoJuve, Liverpool have opened talks to sign Khephren Thuram from Ligue 1 side Nice. The midfielder was initially linked with the Premier League giants last summer, before a move failed to come to fruition. Now, a year later, they could seal a deal worth just €30m (£26m) in the coming months.

Reportedly earning just £14k-a-week too, Thuram wouldn't disrupt Liverpool's wage structure in a package that could be an instant bargain. Still just 23 years old, Thuram is a player ready for such a move in a deal that would hand Slot an early solution to the same defensive midfield problem that Klopp ran into not so long ago.

Whilst other unnamed Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in the Frenchman, Liverpool may hope to finally win the race for Thuram this summer.

"Excellent" Thuram could replace Endo

As nice a surprise as Wataru Endo's Liverpool rise has been since he completed a move last summer, he is already 31 years old and it remains to be seen just how long he can consistently perform in the Premier League, such is its intensity. In truth, the Japan international always seemed a short-term solution for a long-term problem that Thuram could solve for Slot.

An all-round player on and off the ball, Thuram's ability to slot straight into the defensive midfield role would also permanently unleash Alexis Mac Allister into a more advanced position, which, in itself, would make quite the impact.

It's no surprise that the Nice midfielder has earned such high praise, with Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig describing his technique and ball control at speed as "excellent". Now, It could be Liverpool who benefit by adding the final piece to a midfield rebuild initially started under Klopp and seemingly set to continue under the guidance of Edwards and Slot.

Newcastle actively pursuing Gordon repeat in move for £60m "superstar"

Since the takeover by the Saudi PIF back in 2021, Newcastle United have conducted excellent business in the transfer market that has seen the club transform from relegation candidates to European hopefuls.

Eddie Howe, the man at the helm for the Magpies, has done an excellent job in creating a settled side with all the investment, with the vast majority of the signings making a huge impact at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak has undoubtedly been the best addition out of the bunch, scoring 35 times in his 67 appearances for the club since his £60m move to Tyneside from Real Sociedad.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Bruno Guimaraes has also excelled since his own big-money move to the club, with his subsequent good form seeing the Brazilian linked with a £100m move to fellow Premier League sides Manchester City and Arsenal.

However, despite the duo’s excellent form for the Magpies, one player has also taken his game to the next level, with the club needing to complete a similar deal for one talent this summer.

Newcastle interested in signing £60m talent this summer

According to Football Insider, Newcastle retain an active interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze this summer, following the Englishman’s excellent campaign at Selhurst Park.

The 25-year-old, who has contributed with 15 goals and assists in 2023/24, has been called up to the England national team for the upcoming European Championships – with Eze one of four Eagles players representing Gareth Southgate’s side.

The former QPR talent has formed an excellent partnership with fellow Magpies target Michael Olise, with the attacking midfielder potentially able to take his form over to Tyneside from London.

The report also goes on to state that Palace are set to demand big fees for their star players, with a previous article stating that Eze could be available for around £60m this summer.

Whilst it may be a pricy deal given Newcastle’s FFP situation, it would be excellent business and one that could see the club follow in the footsteps of winger Anthony Gordon.

Why Eze could be Anthony Gordon 2.0 for Newcastle

Winger Gordon joined the Magpies in a £45m deal from Everton in 2023, with the Englishman seen as a big-money investment to take the club to the next level.

The 2023/24 campaign was undoubtedly his best for Howe’s side, finishing the season with 21 goal contributions in his 35 matches in the Premier League.

However, with the club linked with a move to sign Eze this summer, the Magpies could repeat their excellent business, with the Palace midfielder producing some excellent stats that have blown Gordon out of the water.

When comparing the duo – who have been noted as similar players by FBref – Eze has produced the same number of combined goals and assists per 90 this season, whilst also averaging over one more shot in each game he’s featured.

The 25-year-old has also been more successful in finding his teammates, completing 77% of passes attempted and completing nearly 10% more take-ons than the former Everton forward.

Eze has also produced some solid defensive numbers, winning 48% of the tackles he’s entered – promoting data analyst Ben Mattinson to dub the talent as a “superstar”.

All things considered, the Palace star would be an excellent addition and one that can propel Howe’s side back into contention for European Football, with the chance to pach the playmaker from a top-flight rival in a similar manner to Gordon's arrival.

His versatility could see him feature as a box-to-box or advanced midfielder, whilst also being able to operate off either flank – with Eze able to plug any holes in the Magpies side should they have a repeat of their injury troubles.

Keenly-fought contest settled by one goalBrazilian defender powered home from a cornerDid he shove Romero out of the way?WHAT HAPPENED?

A keenly-fought contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which saw the home side hold their own for long periods, was settled in the 64th minute when Brazilian defender Gabriel rose highest in the box to meet a corner from Bukayo Saka.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Gabriel looked to be all alone as he sprung into the air and planted a powerful header beyond Guglielmo Vicario, with the Gunners star losing his marker – fellow South American Cristian Romero. Spurs’ Argentine centre-half did, however, look to the referee for a foul.

WHAT MERSON & FERDINAND SAID

Ex-Arsenal playmaker Paul Merson believes Romeo may have a case for a shove, telling : “I'd be disappointed if I didn't get a foul. He's in the wrong position, everything is wrong about his defending. He's a centre half international, even I know and I don't even play at the back you got to be side on. You got to see the ball and your player. To start off you have to be a hand length away and he's standing with him. I'd expect a foul.”

Former Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand echoed those sentiments, saying: “I think if a centre forward does that, the referee gives a foul against him. They don't even look at it . He does need to be stronger. It's poor defending but he does get a shove in his back.”

Spurs will be disappointed to have conceded from another set-piece, given their recent struggles in that area, but will believe that Romero could have been stronger in dealing with Gabriel. Arsenal, meanwhile, will have no complaints as their unbeaten start to the 2024-25 Premier League season has been extended to four games.

Villa chasing £17m Watkins partner who’s a better dribbler than Grealish

Aston Villa's triumphant players are enjoying a well-earned rest following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, having brilliantly qualified for the Champions League through a fourth-place Premier League finish.

Of course, Unai Emery will be delighted with his progress at Villa Park but he has not yet enjoyed a taste of silverware and this will drive him toward improving his squad with purposeful summer recruitment.

Former loanee Ross Barkley is already in discussions to join the side following an excellent campaign with Luton Town, while rumours persist that Emery and Monchi are eager to sign a high-profile new wide forward.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Villa will look to balance experienced mettle with youthful avidity, however, with a talented teenager emerging as a contender.

Aston Villa chasing teen talent

According to SportBILD – via Sport Witness – Aston Villa are interested in launching a summer swoop for Mainz 05 teenager Brajan Gruda, who has enjoyed an impressive breakout year in the German Bundesliga.

There will be a tussle for his signature, with Premier League rivals Liverpool and Newcastle United both keen on a move and, moreover, German champions Bayer Leverkusen pushing for a deal too.

Brajan Gruda for Mainz 05

Gruda has been appraised at about €20m (£17m) by Mainz, and Emery will hope that his team's newfound presence in the Champions League will give them as good a shout as any in closing the deal.

Brajan Gruda's style of play

19 years old, Gruda has already made quite the impact in Germany, performing with unshackled forwardness in his expression and enjoying a prolific close to the 2023/24 campaign.

Gruda scored four goals and supplied three assists from 19 starting displays in the top-flight last term, with five of his nine goal contributions arriving across his final eight appearances.

It's not so much Gruda's output than his all-encompassing swagger that has arrested Emery's intrigue, boasting an almighty array of strengths that have been showcased through his performances in his homeland this season, ever more important after playing just two minutes of Bundesliga action in 2022/23.

With such remarkable robustness and playmaking ability, Gruda – who has been dubbed an "ideal second striker" by Ben Mattinson – might even be the perfect player to maintain Ollie Watkins' level next season, with Aston Villa's Player of the Season plundering an awesome 27 goals and 13 assists across all competitions.

Described as "unstoppable" earlier in the campaign by pundit Jamie Carragher, the mobile and multi-angled approach of the England international has kept defenders guessing all term, and his skill set might just make him the "ideal" star to play off Villa's main man.

With a growing list of ambitious European outfits eager to complete a deal, it's safe to say that the German U21 international has the skills to go right to the top, even described as "one of the most underrated youngsters in Germany" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Kulig's eagle-eyed analysis has also drawn the conclusion that Gruda boasts similarities to one Lionel Messi, though it's perhaps more apt to suggest that Villa could land their successor to Jack Grealish by forging ahead with this move.

Why Villa are interested in Brajan Gruda

Gruda has all the qualities to be a real player in the Premier League, blending skill and style with solidity to overcome and actually revel in the rigours of the Premier League.

He won 5.5 duels per game in the Bundesliga. Take Leon Bailey, for example, a terrific player and highly effective in Emery's system but he only produced 3.1 successful duels per game in the Premier League this season.

Grealish, more to the point, averaged 3.8 duels and only 0.9 dribbles per game in the English first division, albeit with precision rates of 61% and 62% respectively – that latter metric far below Gruda's return of 2.5 successful dribbles per game.

But for the sake of comparability it is important to note that Gruda is playing with the freedom and exuberance of one realising their quality and enjoying their craft in their fledgling phase, much like Jhon Duran, and adding another prodigious talent would only enhance the Lions cause.

Grealish does rank among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref, but he also ranks among the bottom 47% for successful take-ons per 90, which is a metric focussed more on passing an opponent with the ball at feet.

Gruda, in comparison, ranks among the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries, the top 2% for successful take-ons and the top 8% for shot-creating actions per 90.

Patently, he's an elite-level ball-carrier, and this inborn vehicular ability on the ball will only serve to enrich the Villa attack, supplementing Watkins and offering the creative and fast-driving ability to ensure that the Villans are effective when they surge forward en masse.

Aston Villa hit gold on "deadly" ace who's worth as much as Ronald Araujo

Grealish has not been a part of the newfound sparkle that has lifted the club to heights unseen in generations, having been sold to Manchester City for £100m in 2021, but he could arrive reincarnate in the form of Gruda and all his precocity.
