Tom Poynton, the Derbyshire wicketkeeper, has announced his retirement from the game aged 26
ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2016Tom Poynton, the Derbyshire wicketkeeper, has announced his retirement from the game aged 26. Poynton was involved in a car crash in 2014 – in which his father was killed – and the ankle injury he sustained has continued to cause problems, prompting his decision to quit.Until last month, Poynton had been involved in every game for Derbyshire this season. However, the ankle flared up again and is expected to require further surgery, with Poynton deciding it will no longer hold up to the rigours of playing professionally.”It’s been a really difficult decision to retire from the game I love, but the medical diagnosis and advice means I know that it’s the right decision,” Poynton said. “I’m grateful to everyone in the Derbyshire cricket family and further afield who have helped me during my career, both on and off the field.”I’ve loved playing for Derbyshire, a club I’ve been associated with for over 10 years, and I’m sad to leave. I now need to focus on the next stage of my life after cricket. There’s a few opportunities that I’m going to pursue and I’m excited about what lies ahead.”Poynton came through Derbyshire’s academy, representing England Under-19s and going on to play more than 100 matches for the county. He made his Derbyshire debut aged 17 and in 2012 was involved in the third-highest ninth-wicket partnership in first-class history, putting on 261 with Wayne Madsen and scoring his maiden hundred. In all, Poynton scored 1155 runs in first-class cricket, to go with 107 catches and 10 stumpings. While recovering from his injuries during the 2014 season, he worked in the club’s marketing department.Derbyshire’s chief executive, Simon Storey, said: “Tom is a model professional and leaves the club with a gap to fill on and off the field. He is a natural leader and fine cricketer who has overcome great personal tragedy in the process of representing his home county.”He has shown huge commitment and courage to get back playing first-class cricket at Derbyshire and on behalf of the whole club – members, sponsors, supporters and staff – we all wish Tom every success in the future.”
Two days before a Dunedin Test match in December, news broke that a doping test had found a banned substance in Kusal Perera’s body. In the grueling months that followed, Perera put himself through more tests – including a polygraph – to have his name cleared. Two days out from another Test match and Perera’s batting was seen getting special attention in the nets on the Lord’s Nursery Ground. He admitted six months out of the game had taken an emotional and physical toll, but there is an eagerness to get back to playing cricket. What better place to make his return, he asked, than the most prestigious ground of them all?”I haven’t been told if I’m playing yet, but I was thrown into trouble and to come back from that at Lord’s would be a great opportunity,” Kusal said. “I was banned just before a Test, so to return in this format would be fitting. Even the time I was out of the team I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong. But these things can happen in life.”Between December 7, when he was provisionally suspended, and May 11, when he was cleared, Perera was not allowed to so much as train with the SLC coaches. He might not have had the time anyway, having had to make repeated trips overseas, including to London, where the polygraph and a separate urine test were conducted. A hair analysis was done in a Paris lab.”I couldn’t really think about cricket much in those months, because my focus was on the problem I was facing. I didn’t have any time to think about whether I was in touch, or whether I could train, or even what was happening in cricket. I started training the day after I was cleared. Before then I didn’t do much batting – just some fitness work.”Perera was in the nets at Colombo’s Khettarama on May 13, and said he has trained as much as Sri Lanka’s heavy southwest monsoon has allowed him to. He was not expected to play a part in the Test series, but injuries to others in the squad have allowed him to be fast-tracked.”When you start training after six months your body needs to get used to it again,” he said. “Your muscles start to hurt – but that’s normal. But what I’ve found is that because I’m coming into it quite fresh, I’m hitting the ball well. I’m seeing it well. So there are positives to it as well. I feel like I’m in good touch.”Perera said he hadn’t specifically trained for Test cricket since resuming practice, but was hopeful the relative ease of conditions at Lord’s might ease him into international cricket – if he is in the final XI. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 20s Centigrade during the Test, and no team has been dismissed for less than 350 at Lord’s in three county matches so far this season.”I watched the attack and it’s mostly fast bowlers,” Kusal said. “In London the conditions seem easier, because it must have been very cold in Durham. When it’s cold you are a bit stiff and your feet don’t work as well. With this weather and given the pitch as well – which looks like it will be batting-friendly – I think there’s a chance for us to dominate them.”
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has done an 'unbelievable' job at Villa Park as his side go into the business end of the season with a shot at continental qualification, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.
What's the latest news involving Unai Emery and Aston Villa?
Aston Villa sit seventh in the Premier League standings on 54 points with four matches left to play, with only goal difference separating them from Tottenham Hotspur in sixth position.
Since arriving at Villa Park to take over from Steven Gerrard last October, the 51-year-old Spaniard has taken 42 points from 21 fixtures in the English top flight, winning 13, drawing three and losing five of his encounters in charge, working out at a points total of roughly two per game, as per Transfermarkt.
Last weekend, the Villans suffered their first defeat since February at Old Trafford in an unfortunate 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, bringing to an end a ten-match unbeaten run, as per Sky Sports.
As per the official Aston Villa website, Emery spoke of his desire to see his team bounce back following the loss to the Red Devils, stating: “I think today we can be bitterly disappointed but, overall, we have to analyse everything, in the way we are now. Adding the new step ahead we have in front, facing the possibility to play for a European place. We are going to think and analyse the next match against Wolves on Saturday because we have in front a new opportunity.”
Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist O'Rourke believes that appointing Emery is the best decision Aston Villa majority owners NSWE have made since taking control of the club.
When asked about their decision to bring Emery into the club has been their most notable, O'Rourke told FFC: "It's hard not to argue with that assessment; he's been unbelievable. I think, since he's taken over, Villa are only second to Arsenal in the amount of points won in the Premier League. Remarkable turnaround, they were in a relegation fight when he took over, but he's transformed things since replacing Steven Gerrard."
How far can Aston Villa go under the stewardship of Unai Emery?
Emery is the sort of manager who takes things a game at a time. However, he'll certainly be encouraged by the strides his Aston Villa side have made and where that could lead them in the coming months.
For now, at least, securing some sort of European access for 2023/24 has to be their main goal, whether that be in the form of the Europa League or Europa Conference League.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on the touchline in the Villans' 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Then their focus will likely move on to scouting potential summer recruits, who will likely be enthused by the prospect of competing in continental competition next term.
Nevertheless, this feat can only be achieved if Villa continue to perform under Emery over their next four fixtures, which is something the Spaniard will be doing everything he can to try and ensure his side finish this campaign with a flourish.

Newcastle United are still believed to be "very attentive" to the potential signing of Barcelona star Ansu Fati during the summer transfer window.
Could Fati leave Barca in the summer?
The 20-year-old has been seen as a prodigious talent for a number of years now, bursting onto the scene at Barca as arguably one of the most exciting teenagers in world football. He has already made 96 appearances for the Catalan club, scoring 25 goals along the way.
This season, however, Fati's stock has fallen a little, with manager Xavi struggling to make him a genuinely key man in their La Liga title charge. While 24 league appearances have come the Spaniard's way, only nine of those have been as a starter, highlighting his current squad role.
While the youngster clearly has enormous potential, the idea of Barca selling him at the end of the season isn't completely out of the question, with numerous exit rumours emerging in recent weeks. Newcastle are one of the club to have been linked with a summer move for the forward, as the Magpies look to enjoy a significant and successful transfer window.

Magpies still keen on Fati signing?
According to Sport [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are still "very attentive" to Fati's current situation at Barca, with his future "still unknown", as things stand. His agent, Jorge Mendes, has "probed the market" ahead of a potential summer move for his client, with several Premier League sides interested in signing him.
He is described in the report as a possible "killer" of a signing, given his match-winning ability in the final third that has seen him score and assists three times apiece in the league this season.
Fati could be sensational signing for Newcastle if they get a deal over the line, giving Eddie Howe added star power and someone who could become a new darling at St James' Park.
The £200,000-per-week has been described as an "extraordinary" footballer by Xavi in the recent past and he could prove to be an upgrade on Allan Saint-Maximin, who while a huge threat on his day, remains an insonsistent performer, scoring just 13 goals in 117 appearances for the Magpies.
In Fati, Newcastle could acquire the services of a world-renowned youngster with many years ahead of him – one who could thrive being one of the main men at a Premier League club, rather than a squad player at Barca.
Everton produced an epic comeback in their Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night and Sean Dyche will be thrilled that his perseverance with Ellis Simms finally paid off in the dying moments of the game.
The Toffees academy graduate has had a rollercoaster season after becoming a key player whilst on loan with Sunderland in the Championship over the first half of the season with his impressive displays ultimately leading to his recall to Goodison Park in January, although his opportunities remained limited until the appointment of the former Burnley boss.
Over Dyche's eight games in charge of the Merseysiders, Simms has featured four times and his faith in the striker finally paid off in west London as the youngster earned his team a crucial point with a goal scored in the 89th minute of action.
Indeed, there is still plenty of work to be done for both Everton to survive in the Premier League this season and Simms to become a prolific presence in front of goal but the draw with Chelsea will surely instil some belief and confidence going into the remaining ten league fixtures.
If Dyche does manage to retain the Toffees' top-flight status it could be a great opportunity to give more academy graduates opportunities to prove their worth in the senior team and Tom Cannon could be the perfect addition to the attacking threat when he returns from his loan with Preston North End.
How is Tom Cannon doing on loan?
Cannon made the move to the Championship club back in the January transfer window and is earning the important first-team football needed to give a better insight into his capabilities.
Over 12 appearances so far, the 20-year-old ace – hailed a "bright spark" by journalist Tom Sandells – has scored three goals, registered one assist and created two big chances, as well as averaging 1.2 successful dribbles, two shots on goal and winning four duels per game, proving that he is a huge attacking presence on the pitch.
It seems that Cannon has captured a lot of attention during his short time in the Championship with Hull City manager Liam Rosenior hailing the forward when the club came up against PNE last month:
"I thought Tom Cannon was outstanding, one of the best we've played against by far."

The former Everton U18s and U21s striker penned a new three-year deal in August 2022 after tallying up 97 appearances, 51 goals and 14 assists in the youth set-up, as well as earning three senior appearances in the first team before his temporary move to Lancashire at the turn of the year.
With that being said, the future is looking bright for Cannon and if he can continue to produce a solid output on loan over the remainder of the season, it would put him in good stead to follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned Simms.
Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery had the first opportunity to stamp his own mark on the squad during the recent January transfer window and made minor adjustments to the side.
The Spanish boss, who arrived from Villarreal to replace Steven Gerrard earlier this season, brought in Jhon Duran and Alex Moreno from Chicago Fire and Real Betis respectively on permanent deals.
He also decided to part ways with experienced goalscorer Danny Ings by allowing the centre-forward to sign for Premier League rivals West Ham United.
The English striker has scored two goals in his last two games for the Hammers, after finding the back of the net six times for Villa during the first half of the campaign, and the club did little to replace his goalscoring prowess.
Duran, 19, came in during the January window and has failed to score or assist a goal in four top-flight appearances so far. The teenager, who scored eight times in 27 MLS appearances in 2022, is a young player who is still learning and developing at first-team level and may need time to establish himself as a frontline option for Emery.
Therefore, in order to bolster the side and afford Duran the time he needs to hit his stride in senior football, the Villa head coach must sign an experienced and proven goalscorer in the summer to compete with Ollie Watkins and replace Ings.
Could Pedro replace Danny Ings at Aston Villa?
The Villans have recently been linked with Flamengo forward Pedro and Emery must attempt to sign the Brazil international as he could be a terrific addition to the squad and a dream replacement for Ings.
South American expert Tim Vickery described the forward as a “local hero” in his home country and former Brazil head coach Tite dubbed him “special”.
The 25-year-old, who once played in Italy for Fiorentina, has plundered ten goals and two assists in ten appearances in all competitions this season.
This comes after the 6 foot 1 marksman managed an eye-catching 29 goals and ten assists in 59 outings in the 2021/22 campaign – including a stunning 12 goals in 13 Libertadores matches.
Pedro, who has scored once in four caps for Brazil, only started seven of those 13 Libertadores games and created an impressive six ‘big chances’ for his teammates to go along with his exceptional goal haul, which shows that the attacker is capable of creating opportunities for others whilst punishing teams with his own finishing.
The Brazilian goal machine has proven himself to be a reliable player at the top end of the pitch for Flamengo over the last 18 months, earning himself a call-up for his country, and his exceptional form since the start of last season is why he could be a dream replacement for Ings at Villa Park.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side return to action in the Premier League in the lunchtime kick-off today as they attempt to avoid three straight defeats.
After losing to Leicester and Manchester City in their last two outings, the Villans host Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who will go top for a few hours at least if they avoid defeat in the Midlands today.
Both teams were beaten 3-1 by Pep Guardiola’s men in their respective last matches in the top flight, and Emery will surely be hoping for a strong response from his players against an Arsenal team who have stuttered of late.
The Spanish head coach may alter his starting XI in an attempt to rejuvenate his team for this clash against his former club, and one player who should be unleashed from the start is Philippe Coutinho.
Will Philippe Coutinho start against Arsenal?
After his impressive cameo off the bench last time out, the £125k-p/w attacking midfielder must be named in the Villa starting XI to take on Arsenal this afternoon.
Against Manchester City, the 30-year-old came on as a substitute and recorded a Sofascore rating of 7.4 by completing two dribbles and winning four of his six individual duels, whilst also registering one shot on target.
Emi Buendia, who started that match, lost 100% of his battles and failed to produce a single shot in his 60 minutes on the pitch (as per Sofascore), and the Argentine gem should now be replaced by his Brazilian team-mate, who could get the best out of Ollie Watkins.
The Villa centre-forward has scored three goals in his last three appearances and has racked up four goals and one assist in seven league matches since the World Cup break.
Coutinho, who ex-Liverpool player Phil Thompson dubbed a “creative genius”, has not scored or set up a single goal in the Premier League this season in six starts, but his flash of quality against City suggests that the spark which he showed last term could be coming back to him.
At his best, the wizard has the quality to put opportunities on a plate for Watkins to continue his excellent streak in front of goal, and the pair could make for an exciting duo against the Gunners.
In 2021/22, the Brazil international averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.09 across 19 appearances and chipped in with five goals and three assists from midfield, whilst creating five ‘big chances’ and providing 1.3 key passes per game for his team-mates.
The ex-Barcelona gem, whose touch was once described as “magical” by journalist John Townley, has 184 career goals and assists combined at club level, along with 21 goals for his country, and is vastly experienced at being a difference-maker at the top level.
Emery must now unleash Coutinho alongside Watkins from the start against Arsenal today and hope that the Champions League winner can provide some moments of magic to tee up the England international to continue his hot streak.
Aston Villa endured a relatively quiet January transfer window as Unai Emery only brought in two new signings – Jhon Duran and Alex Moreno from Chicago Fire and Real Betis respectively.
One player the club were reportedly interested in signing last month was central midfielder Matteo Guendouzi but Johan Lange and the head coach opted against a move for the Frenchman in the end, with a return for him in the summer possibly on the cards.
It was reported that Marseille were looking for a fee in the region of €50m (£45m) and Villa were seemingly unwilling to cave into the French club’s demands.
When asked if the club could reignite their interest during the summer window, journalist Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It wouldn’t surprise me if the link came back onto the radar.
“I’d say it also depends how Marseille’s season plays out. I think they had a reasonably good transfer window themselves, and it might be quite an exciting place for him to be.”
Emery could now land his next version of Dani Parejo by securing a deal to sign Guendouzi from the Ligue 1 outfit ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
The Spanish midfielder played for the Villa boss at Valencia and Villarreal and racked up a whopping 145 appearances in the middle of the park – making him the head coach’s fifth most-used player in his career.
Parejo, 33, is a combative central player who also has the quality to open up defences and create chances for his teammates on a regular basis. In LaLiga this season, the gem has made 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game and created 1.4 chances per match – after assisting ten goals and making 2.2 defensive contributions per outing last term.
Guendouzi, meanwhile, has made 2.0 tackles and interceptions per match and assisted three goals in Ligue 1 in 22/23 – having chipped in with 1.6 interventions per game and assisting eight goals in the French top-flight last season.
They have also both averaged seven progressive passes per 90 over last 365 days, a fact that indicates, along with their statistics over the last 18 months, that they have similar play styles in midfield, albeit Parejo has performed to a slightly higher level.
Both are combative in the sense they are willing and able to get stuck in to win the ball back for their side whilst also providing quality in possession by consistently assisting goals and creating opportunities for others.
Therefore, Guendouzi, who Alan Hutton claimed would “bring fire” to Villa’s midfield, could be Emery’s next version of Parejo if the coach can help the 23-year-old – who is ten years younger than the Villarreal maestro – to continue to develop and increase his defensive and creative output.
