Everton predicted XI vs West Ham

Everton return to action in the Premier League this afternoon at Goodison Park against West Ham United, and Frank Lampard will be hoping that his team can pick up their first league win of the season after going unbeaten with draws in their last four games.

The Toffees lost twice to their opponents when they met last season, although David Moyes’ side have found themselves in a poorer state of form than Everton over the current campaign so far and currently sit 18th in the table.

As a result, Lampard must do everything he can to capitalise on West Ham’s struggles by deploying the best threat to the visitors later today, but he will be without one of their standout performers.

Jordan Pickford picked up a thigh injury in the Merseyside derby after being named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance against Liverpool, with the goalkeeper joining Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend on Everton’s injury list.

Despite Pickford’s absence, there is a silver lining for Lampard as Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin returned to full team training last week and could be in contention to start against the Hammers, alongside the now match-fit James Garner.

With all considered, this is how Football Fancast expects Everton to line up against West Ham…

We expect to see just two changes from the team which started against Liverpool, with one very important returnee in the middle of the park.

With Pickford injured, we expect that Asmir Begovic will take the starting role as Everton’s number one whilst the England goalkeeper recovers, while Lampard will be hoping that both James Tarkowski and Conor Coady can continue their solid defensive partnership to give the second in command ‘keeper the cover that he needs.

The only tactical change we expect to see in the starting line-up is the return of Doucoure in place of Tom Davies alongside Amadou Onana and Alex Iwobi, who both retain their starting positions in the midfield three.

We expect Lampard to shake things up in the middle of the park by ditching the £32k-per-week Davies to inject a proven attacking threat into the midfield and give better support to Neal Maupay so that the Toffees can squeeze as much creativity and goalscoring opportunities as possible out of the game ahead.

Doucoure scored two goals, delivered four assists and created three big chances over 30 league appearances last season, along with making 2.5 tackles and one clearance per game, proving that he can offer both assistance with the defensive play and could give more support to the attack.

By contrast, Davies netted just once in 2021/22 and averaged a mere 0.5 tackles per game, which suggests that Doucoure would be an upgrade on the 24-year-old in Everton’s midfield.

Although we don’t predict that Calvert-Lewin or Garner will start, it would not be surprising to see both players coming off the bench, especially if the Toffees are chasing a goal for a win or needing some fresh legs in midfield.

Rangers handed Ianis Hagi injury relief

Glasgow Rangers have been handed a big relief over Ibrox gem Ianis Hagi’s recovery from injury…

What’s the talk?

Gheorghe Hagi has claimed that his son is making good progress in his rehabilitation and that the attacking midfielder is putting the work in behind the scenes to return as quickly as possible.

The Daily Record quote the Romania legend as saying: “Ianis is working very hard to come back and he is very happy his team are doing well. Rangers are back in the Champions League, where they belong.

“We hope that when the time is right, which will hopefully be soon, Ianis will be back on the pitch when Rangers say he is ready. He is definitely on the right track though.”

Van Bronckhorst should be delighted

This news should delight the Ibrox head coach Gio van Bronckhorst, as it shows that the Romania international has not suffered any setbacks in his recovery.

The 23-year-old has been out of action since January with a knee injury, and his manager will be buzzing to have him back as soon as he can, as he could be like a new signing for the Light Blues.

As cliché as it sounds, Hagi returning to the team this season could be a huge boost to the squad, as he is a talented attacker who is capable of being a match-winner.

He scored seven goals and set up 11 in 23 Premiership starts in the 2020/21 campaign as he helped the Gers to secure the title. He then caught the eye in the Europa League last season as he scored once, registered one assist and created three ‘big chances’ in just three starts in the group stage.

This shows that he has the quality to score and create goals, and that is why he could be a match-winner for the Light Blues upon his return.

Along with his ability on the pitch, Hagi is seemingly a manager’s dream in training.  Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard previously hailed the 23-year-old’s willingness to improve, saying: “We’re really happy with Ianis Hagi, he’s a joy to work with.

“He’s a student of the game. He’s always looking at areas to improve, whether that be from a physical point of view or tactically or technically. He’s someone you have to drag off the training ground.”

This suggests that Van Bronckhorst will enjoy working with the 23-year-old, as he knows that the gem will be doing everything in his power to maximise his ability.

Therefore, the manager will be delighted with Hagi’s progress and will now be looking forward to seeing him back out on the grass, whenever that ends up being.

Leeds: Whelan reacts to Bamford injury news

Leeds United employee Noel Whelan has been reacting to what he’s heard on Patrick Bamford’s latest injury, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Bamford injured

The England international endured an injury-hit 2021/22 season, with ankle, hamstring and foot issues limiting him to just seven Premier League starts.

The 28-year-old suffered his first injury problem of 2022/23 against Southampton last Saturday when he was forced off with an abductor problem.

Bamford, who has begun the season as captain in Liam Cooper’s absence, was replaced by Dan James at St Mary’s, although Jesse Marsch confirmed after the game that the striker’s injury is “not bad” and claimed that he could be back in training before the match against Chelsea this coming Sunday.

The Latest: Whelan’s comments

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan was reacting to the update on Bamford’s problem not being too serious, describing it as a ‘massive’ boost for Leeds.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-49/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Elland Road ambassador said:

“We don’t want to be missing Patrick – he’s the captain by rights at the moment.

“He gives us a different dimension when he’s playing. We’ve got that focal point that allows Rodrigo to take up good positions and allows Jack Harrison to push further forward.

“He’s very important to this side, so to hear that he’s back in training soon and it’s not a serious injury – it’s massive.

“This might be a season where he needs time to rest and recover a bit more. He’s just come back from a really horrible season filled with injuries.”

The Verdict: Phew…

Joe Gelhardt didn’t travel to Southampton due to an issue of his own, highlighting Leeds’ lack of depth in attack, so having Bamford out for the foreseeable future would’ve been a major blow, not least because of the 19 Premier League goals that he has scored since the Whites returned to the top flight two years ago.

While it looks as if he could feature on Sunday, it could still be wise for the Leeds hierarchy to explore a new signing in the final third before the September 1 deadline.

Hopefully Bamford will avoid any serious injury issues this term, but as Whelan mentions, the club may need to be especially careful with him as the season goes on given the troubles of 2021/22.

Derby favourites to sign Lewis Dobbin

Derby County have emerged as favourites to sign Everton striker Lewis Dobbin, according to The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Dobbin profiled

The 19-year-old is an academy product at Goodison Park and has worked his way up through the ranks, making his senior first team debut for the Toffees last season.

Back in January, the forward committed his future and put pen to paper on a long-term deal on Merseyside, but it sounds like Frank Lampard’s side are ready to let him leave on a temporary basis to aid his development, and a move to League One appears a very high possibility.

The Latest: Derby favourites to sign Dobbin

The Athletic report that Derby are now the ‘clear favourites’ to sign Dobbin, with the teenager ‘close’ to agreeing a loan deal away from Everton.

A number of the Toffees’ exciting talents, including Jarrad Branthwaite, have recently benefited from loans, and the Stoke On Trent-born talent looks as if he’ll be next to follow in their footsteps, with his next destination likely to be Pride Park.

The Verdict: Bags of potential

If Derby did manage to get a deal for Dobbin over the line, it would be a major coup for Liam Rosenior and the rest of his backroom staff.

The attacker, once hailed for having a ‘fantastic attitude’ by Everton’s U18s boss David Unsworth, is a versatile and exciting talent who can play in any position across a front three. He’s made an outstanding 25 goal contributions in 31 appearances in the U18s Premier League during his time at Goodison, via Transfermarkt.

The Rams will need to bolster their ranks with extra striking options if they want to give themselves a real chance at a promotion push this season, and Dobbin might be just the man that they are looking for.

James Pearce confirms Liverpool injury blow

Reliable journalist James Pearce has confirmed that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota may have suffered a ‘recurrence’ of a hamstring injury.

The Lowdown: Jota’s hamstring issue

The Portuguese goal-getter has been a superb signing for the Reds, but his 2021/22 season petered out a little as he failed to score in his last seven appearances of the campaign.

Jota then suffered a hamstring issue on UEFA Nations League duty with Portugal, ruling him out of action for a number of weeks and seeing him miss Liverpool’s opening two pre-season games.

While it was hoped that the 25-year-old would be back in the near future, a fresh update suggests that won’t be the case.

The Latest: Pearce drops negative update

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Pearce worryingly revealed that Jota has suffered the same hamstring injury again, with a scan set the determine the severity of it:

“Diogo Jota having a scan amid fears he’s suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury he’s only just recovered from.”

Jurgen Klopp has done little to allay those ‘fears’, telling the official club website before Crystal Palace: “Diogo is a concern. With Diogo it’s a muscle again.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: Big early-season blow

This is a huge blow for Liverpool with the start of the Premier League season slowly approaching, with Jota now possibly a doubt for the opening game against Fulham on August 6.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

With Darwin Nunez still adjusting to life at his new club, the Portugal international may have earned regular minutes early in the campaign, potentially leading the line between Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz.

Jota’s stock has arguably fallen a little after a poor end to the season and the arrivals of Diaz and Nunez, but 34 goals in 85 appearances for Liverpool is testament to the goal threat he carries and it is vital that Klopp has him available as soon as possible.

Leeds learn Nathan Collins asking price

Leeds United now know how much Burnley defender Nathan Collins will cost, but they face plenty of competition for his signature.

The lowdown

talkSPORT’s Alex Crook reported on Friday that the Whites are ‘monitoring’ the 21-year-old centre-back, who suffered relegation from the Premier League following his team’s final-day defeat against Newcastle United last month.

It was only last summer that the Clarets paid £12.6m to sign him from Stoke City, and he signed for four years with the option of a fifth (via Transfermarkt).

Collins made 18 league starts in his first season at Turf Moor, including the last 10 matches of the campaign.

The latest

According to the Daily Mirror (June 18, 11:24 am, via MOT Leeds News) Burnley have now set their price tag for Collins. They want £25m for the Irishman, which would represent a profit of just under 200%.

Newcastle, Aston Villa and Wolves are all in the frame along with Leeds, and it remains to be seen whether any of the clubs meet that valuation or instead test Burnley’s resolve.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-45/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

Burnley’s negotiating position may not be the strongest. As a consequence of their relegation, club owners ALK Capital must repay ‘a significant portion’ of a £65m loan (via The Athletic).

In that case, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Leeds trying to lowball Vincent Kompany’s side.

Collins is a real warrior at the back, ranking in the 98th percentile for blocks per 90, the 85th for clearances and the 97th for aerial duels won among positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues (via FBRef).

His former manager Sean Dyche previously heaped praise on the ‘excellent’ youngster, who may be destined to remain in the Premier League.

Collins made headlines last week in Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine, scoring what journalist Ronan Murphy called ‘a pure Lionel Messi goal’ in the first half.

Leeds resigned to losing Kalvin Phillips

A claim has emerged regarding Leeds United and their current situation surrounding Kalvin Phillips’ future at the Yorkshire club.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook had this to say on the matter.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

He said: “I think there is, behind the scenes, a sort of resignation that Kalvin Phillips will probably leave this summer, and actually, it might not be a bad thing for Leeds because it will give them a lot of money then to be able to revamp the squad and sign the players Jesse Marsch wants.”

In recent weeks, the midfielder has been linked with a move away from Elland Road with fellow Premier League clubs Manchester City and Liverpool rumoured to be circling around the player.

Awful news for Leeds fans

As one of Leeds’ youth products, the 26-year-old has gone on to become a crucial figure for the team.

With 234 senior appearances under his belt for the club, Phillips has seen his side go from being in the Championship to securing their place in the Premier League for a third successive season.

To highlight how important the England international is to the Whites, out of the nine league games he missed last season, Leeds lost seven of them and conceded 17 goals in total.

It was the same case this season as the Elland Road outfit lost 12 of the 18 games he didn’t feature in, once again how vulnerable the team are defensively when they don’t have Phillips on the pitch.

With that in mind, it would be an awful thing for the Leeds fans to potentially see their midfield star wave goodbye to Elland Road this summer.

However, as Crook mentioned, should the Yorkshire club end up selling the midfielder in the coming weeks for a substantial transfer fee, this could give Marsch a big pot of cash to spend on the team and make sure that Phillips’ potential absence won’t be as much of a problem as it could be.

If the people behind the scenes at Leeds are resigned to seeing the 26-year-old leave the club, then they need to make sure that they get the best deal possible in terms of the finances.

Wolves must land Calvin Bassey transfer

Wolves may have only finished 10th in the Premier League this season, but they managed to do so with a respectable defensive record.

Over 38 games, Bruno Lage’s side conceded 43 goals in total, which is fewer than the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, West Ham United and Leicester City, all of whom finished above them in the table.

One man who played a big part in Wolves’ impressive defence this season is Max Kilman.

Over 30 league matches, the Englishman won 33 tackles and made 52 blocks, 64 interceptions and 118 clearances.

To further highlight the defender’s talent and impact on the team, in the final six league games of the season that he missed through injury, Wolves did not keep one clean sheet, conceding 15 goals in the process.

Now that the season has ended and the summer transfer window is about to open, one man who has been linked with a move to Molineux and who could give Lage the chance to form a scary defensive duo alongside Kilman is Calvin Bassey.

Since joining Rangers two years ago, the defender has gone on to make 65 appearances for the Glasgow club across all competitions, chipping in with one goal and six assists.

In terms of his defensive capabilities, the 22-year-old made 20 interceptions and won 28 tackles in 29 Scottish Premiership games this season. Also, his performance in the Europa League final which saw Rangers lose on penalties against Eintracht Frankfurt was described as “astonishing” by BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves.

This shows just how capable the defender is of playing on the big stage and stepping up for his team when it matters most.

Regarding a potential move to Wolves this summer, the fact that the defender has been deployed as a centre-back and as a left-back through the 2021/22 season could make him a useful squad option for Lage.

Taking into account Kilman’s clear significance to the team, as was unfortunately highlighted during the final weeks of the campaign, having him at the back alongside Bassey could be a scary prospect for opposing teams next season.

With a reported price tag of £25m, luring the Rangers star away from Ibrox and to the Premier League is definitely something that Lage and the Wolves hierarchy should consider as the summer transfer window approaches.

Spurs: Serie A expert drops Bastoni claim

Italian football expert Conor Clancy has delivered his verdict on reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Alessandro Bastoni…

What’s the word?

The north London outfit are said to be in the market for a new left-sided central defender to provide competition with Ben Davies and sporting director Fabio Paratici is thought to be a huge admirer of the 23-year-old, who worked under Antonio Conte at Inter Milan.

He could cost in the region of £50m.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Speaking about Bastoni during an interview with Football FanCast, the journalist claimed:

“He’s the best Italian centre-back around.

“He’s a phenomenon.

“He is going to be the next generation of Italian defence himself.”

Conte’s colossus

A backline of Bastoni, Eric Dier and Cristian Romero would certainly elevate the Lilywhites’ defence into being one of the best around, particularly in the Premier League.

Given Conte’s past experience with the 6 foot 3 colossus, there won’t be many better signings for the club to make in the off-season.

Under the 52-year-old, Bastoni started 33 of their 38 games on their way to Inter’s first Scudetto in 11 years last season, and he continues to be an major player under his successor Simone Inzaghi.

His ball-playing ability is something that stands out amongst the rest, having also earned comparisons to fellow Italian defensive greats Leonardo Bonucci and Alessandro Nesta.

As per The Athletic in April 2022, the Inter centre-back ranked inside the top five of all Serie A defenders for attempted passes per 90, whilst also ranking in the top 6% for intensity and top 14% for ball retention.

Also lauded as “complete” “dominant” and a “tenacious tackler” by scout Jacek Kulig, Bastoni outranks every single one of Conte’s current defensive options in terms of passing, registering an accuracy rate of 89.6%, which is vastly superior to Spurs’ best of 88.1% by Eric Dier.

The £60m-rated titan would be an excellent signing indeed, going by the above evidence, and Clancy’s words only add further excitement into the mix.

Just imagine Bastoni and Romero bullying the Premier League for many years to come.

The frictionless genius of Kane Williamson

Up-and-down pitch, sizeable deficit, great leggie at his peak. How do you take those ingredients and score a hundred of seeming inevitability?

Osman Samiuddin06-Dec-2018Kane Williamson had just reached fifty. Matters were somewhat stable though in no way were New Zealand out of danger. They were only 34 ahead and four down. More pertinently, Yasir Shah was in the middle of a tidy little spell, buoyed no doubt by the breaking of a record. We were in the 38th over of the innings and lunch was a couple of overs away.Yasir found some drift on this one, a little like the drift he got in that spell in Dubai, like somebody holding the planet tilts it one way and suddenly everything kind of slides to that side. It was not a good length but a great length. Williamson went back to it, which looked for all the world like a mistake. In truth any movement looked a mistake. The ball fell somewhere between middle and leg and Williamson, no doubt having read it was the leggie, knew what would happen next. Twice in this series, near-identical deliveries had done for him. In Abu Dhabi in the first Test, where he was bowled, the line was more middle and off. In Dubai, where he was caught behind, it had pitched outside leg and caught his outside edge. Both those times it turned more, but this turned too and it was flatter and quicker. Back already, Williamson brought his bat down and with the outside half of his bat, bunted it to safety. He didn’t bring it down in a hurry or in panic. It came down straight. His feet and body remained in fair shape. You can never know for sure but if you figured only a handful of batsmen would survive such a delivery, at such a moment, against such a bowler, nobody would say you are mad. None would have done it with as little fuss or made such a delivery look so not special.Earlier in the session, just before drinks, Yasir had even bowled a googly at him. That doesn’t happen often. And that too had spun and then kept low. That too Williamson had played out, in shape and without crumbling in a heap as so many batsmen do when a ball keeps low.

****

One quality of Kane Williamson’s batting is that it can easily pass you by. With at least two of his three great contemporaries – and you would call them rivals if it was anyone other than Williamson we were talking about, a man who’d struggle to create a rival in a two-man shootout – you cannot help but know they’re batting.Virat Kohli at the crease, such is the energy, brings the challenges that gravity does to the watcher. Can’t escape it. Steven Smith cuts such an odd batting figure that even if you’ve seen each of his 241 international innings, every time he starts it looks like something you’ve never seen before. Only Joe Root has this capacity to go unnoticed but because he is Joe Root, Boy Wonder now Captain of England, nothing he does, not even exhale, goes unnoticed. Plus the crowd won’t ever let you forget it’s “Rooooooot!” in action. It’s not at all that Williamson is an unattractive player. Au contraire. But he is so proficient with every shot he does play that his finest innings not only gather a sense of invincibility, they acquire the unfortunate byproduct of inevitability. Of course he played out those two Yasir deliveries. Of course he’s going to rise up and punch through the covers off the back foot. Of course he’s going to lean forward into those drives. Of course he combines moving forward with playing the shot late.Which is crazy because the situation and circumstances of this innings had naturally dramatic ingredients. Nothing should have been inevitable about it. Yet you’d forget this was the third innings of a slow-scoring game, on a sluggish fourth-day surface given to inconsistent bounce, turn of varying pace available from day one, not just against a strong attack but one led by a world-beating leggie. Some broke sharp and bounced, others turned slower but also didn’t climb as high. Runs have not come fluently for anyone, apart from Williamson that is.
But every time Williamson was on strike the only conclusion was that yeah, this is what batting is supposed to be and Williamson is a batsman, ergo why are we getting our undergarments in such a twist? Here’s a theory: it could be about ownership, the one shot most great batsman turn into theirs and theirs alone, the one people wait to see and then store away in their minds, the one opposition bowlers try to first turn into a weakness and then leave well alone. Does Williamson have one? The back-foot cover punch could be, never an easy shot least of all on this kind of wicket. He played it for fun in this innings, and repeatedly against the turn, timing it like a Seinfeld punchline. But it is an orthodox shot and he plays it without any unnecessary flourish. He plays it just as it should be played, as it has been played, and probably as it is written it should be played in some tattered old textbook. Plus Joe Root plays it as pretty as well. You could then pick another, but the truth is you could pick every shot he plays and the problem with that truth is that it leaves no particular one standing out.An outrageous celebration could do, some manic bat-twirling or beating of the chest, some swearing, or a photogenic leap. A bat drop? No sir. When he reached his hundred – another back-foot punch through the covers getting him there, what do you know? – he waited a little before taking his helmet off. He looked towards the dressing room. And that was it. If there is an especially energetic or expressive Williamson celebration that is being missed here, tweet it in.Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls congratulate each others at stumps•AFPHis metrics speak the same language his batting does. They sometimes pass you by, to the degree that remembering to include him in the big four is like a little win.Neither his home nor away average is the highest among the quartet, so 55.06 at home won’t leap out at you like Kohli’s 64.68 or Smith’s 77.25. And 49.93 away is just marginally less than Smith’s 50.96, even though it’s comfortably above Root (44.95) and Kohli (46.79). The difference between the two, though, is the smallest among the four. As is the difference between his first and second-innings averages – 52.60 and 51.18; Kohli averages 61.39 and 42.93, Root 55.75 and 43.53 and Smith 77.92 and 40.77. Even in this coding, Williamson is equipoised come rain, hail, hell or high water. If you really wanted to stand him out from the quartet, you could throw his fourth-innings average at it. At 60.81, it towers above Root’s (34.94) and Smith’s (31.11) and at nine runs, is a low-rise building better than Kohli’s. His average in Asia is better than those of Smith and Root and in wins, it is second only to Smith. Smith is the only other from the group to have averaged 60-plus in four of the last five calendar years.Equally it’s not difficult to let some humanness in through the cracks. He doesn’t have a hundred in South Africa (but only four Tests there because, New Zealand) and averages less than 40 there and in England and India. But at some point tomorrow a question could creep up on us. How good, maybe how great, was this innings? The result will colour assessments but it’ll be worth reminding ourselves of the basic sternness of the challenge laid out in front of him – the surface, the trouble New Zealand were in, Yasir Shah and company (and usually, ‘and company’ doesn’t even matter in these situations). Keep those two balls that he played for no runs, the googly that didn’t bounce and the perfect legbreak, in your mind. No doubt some will remember a boundary here and there and some grump will of course point to the two missed chances, like it takes away from the innings. Then you’ll think back through his other hundreds and maybe the early match-saving hundred against South Africa will stand out. Or that eye-popping 140 at the Gabba, which, taken together, tell you something about the vast spectrum within which his batting can operate. But as you go through the 19 you’ll realise that so many of them have been of such a quality, of making difficult situations appear – as his batting coach Craig McMillan would later say – “ridiculously easy”, that this one blends in with the others. Like his shot-making, if they’re all so special then it doesn’t mean none are special. It means that we need to redefine special.
