“After 17 years, I don’t think I have a point to prove,” Sachin Tendulkar said at the end of a rain-marred second day at Chittagong. He may just be wrong. Before today, it had been over 17 months, 10 Tests and 17 innings – the longest interval in terms of chances to bat – since his last Test century, against Sri Lanka at New Delhi. His highest score in that duration was 64. Tendulkar also missed a full tour of the West Indies due to injury last summer. The critics sharpened their knives with each passing day, and then Tendulkar, who has always been boyishly enthusiastic for cricket, was “rested” for the one-day leg of this tour.Today, in a brief spell of play, Tendulkar reached his 36th Test century, and it was more than just another addition to his burgeoning numbers. The lack of runs in the recent past made this effort more special, but there was another reason which gave it more meaning – he started this innings yesterday, exactly eight years from the day his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, died when his son was playing in the 1999 World Cup in England. “I would dedicate this to my father,” Tendulkar said, “as it was his eighth death anniversary yesterday. So, this one was pretty emotional.” Tendulkar had dedicated his last century to his father as well; clearly he misses him a lot. He had been criticised for plenty of things throughout his illustrious career, some fair, some unreasonable. What he can’t be faulted for, surely, is his timing. Was it difficult to come back after the way India were grilled after a dismal World Cup? “We were disappointed at not having played well at the World Cup,” Tendulkar said. “People’s demonstrations didn’t matter. It was a huge disappointment [to have done badly at the World Cup], but whatever else happened didn’t matter.”Tendulkar has also been criticised in the past for going slow when the team needed quick runs to push for a result. When he came in yesterday, and saw Rahul Dravid get out soon after, he and Sourav Ganguly had a mini crisis on their hands. India were playing only five specialist batsmen, of which they were the last two, and there were only 132 runs on the board. The pitch was flat and the bowlers needed all the time to take 20 wickets here, so going slow to consolidate would not have been the best option. But Tendulkar and Ganguly, who scored his 13th Test century today, paced their innings perfectly – consolidating and yet scoring at a brisk rate. Tendulkar had words of praise for his partner, with whom he forged together perhaps the best opening combination in ODI history. “It’s always a pleasure to bat with him [Ganguly],” said Tendulkar. “We have been together for so many years now. Sourav is a wonderful player. He knows how to make runs and pace his innings. We had fun in the middle. We tried to keep each other going. The conditions were tough, [but] you have to encourage each other.”That the two gave their wickets away immediately after reaching their hundreds suggested the advantage had been squandered somewhat, but their 189-run stand has given India the opportunity to post a significant first-innings total. The focus now shifts to the bowlers, and, of course, the weather.

Kiran Carlson, Billy Root hundreds drive Glamorgan into ascendancy

Eddie Byrom makes 81 as Marchant de Lange impresses on return to former club

Glamorgan continued to dominate their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Gloucestershire, finishing the day on 388 for eight to give them a commanding lead of 223.The innings was built around hundreds from Kiran Carlson and Billy Root as the Glamorgan middle order took the game away from the visitors.A well made 81 for Eddie Byrom set the foundation for what came after as Glamorgan’s batting line-up made a very decent start to the season on a pitch where you had to fight to get yourself set.The standout performer for Gloucestershire was Marchant de Lange who claimed figures of three for 72 on his return to his old club. The day started with nightwatchman Timm van der Gugten still at the crease and he didn’t last long, spooning a catch to Graeme van Buuren off the bowling of left arm spinner Zafar Gohar who had been given the new ball from the Cathedral Road end. When David Lloyd was bowled by Tom Price and de Lange cleaned up Sam Northeast, Glamorgan were 35 for three and Gloucestershire looked to be clawing their way back into the match. Carlson and Byrom had other ideas, as they shared a stand of 160 that took Glamorgan into the lead.Byrom was watchful at first before looking to attack once well set, but Carlson was a bundle of energy from the moment he reached the crease, his first scoring shots were back-to-back boundaries off Ajeet Singh Dale.Carlson had some luck on 39, Zafar putting down a very difficult chance that was high and spiralling while running away from the ball. Carlson was also dropped on 77 when Ollie Price didn’t hold on to a much easier chance at slip. It was a catch that Ollie Price did take that broke the stand between Byrom and Carlson. Byrom had a dash at a ball outside off stump from de Lange and Price took a great grab at a very short gully. The departure of Byrom didn’t slow Carlson down, he reached his first hundred since July 2021 from 128 balls. A return to form for Carlson will be very welcome for Glamorgan after the 24-year-old had a disappointing season in 2022.Carlson’s wicket came when he was trapped lbw by Ollie Price to leave Glamorgan 253 for five, pushing towards a three-figure lead. With Colin Ingram dropping down the order due to a neck spasm there was pressure on Root and Chris Cooke to make the most of the strong foundation that had been laid for them, and their stand of 69 took Glamorgan past 300 to claim their second batting point. With Cooke gone it was left to Root to steady the batting efforts, and other than when he was also the beneficiary of some good fortune when another dropped chance in the slips from Price on 76 his innings was without real drama and contained some very classy shots.Ingram came into bat at nine but didn’t see out the day, edging a ball from de Lange with Ollie Price this time hanging on to a very good catch.Root reached his hundred just before the end of play as he finished the day undefeated on 104, reaching his century with a cover drive for four as Glamorgan claimed complete control of this match.

– brincou o cantor.

Dinamite vestia o uniforme do Vasco.

'Never done before': Adelaide Oval's key role in New York's T20 World Cup pitches

The pitch trays will be shipped from Australia to Florida then transported to the pop-up venue

Adelaide Oval head groundsman Damien Hough says the drop-in pitches that will be used at Eisenhower Park in New York for the Men’s T20 World Cup are a world first in terms of how they are prepared with some of the trays being built in Adelaide before being shipped to Florida and then transported to the new venue ahead of the tournament.Hough and his team at Adelaide Oval Turf Solutions have been hired by the ICC to oversee the delivery and preparation of the drop-in pitches at the pop-up stadium in New York given their expertise in growing and preparing drop-in pitches over the last decade.Related

Hough explained that it has been a complicated process to prepare the pitches for the World Cup with a lot of logistical challenges involved.”It’s a bit tricky, we basically built six of the 10 trays here in Adelaide,” Hough told . “We made them modular. We’re really proud of them. We’ve got a couple out of the back that will probably come out here [on Adelaide Oval] next year.”We put them in a shipping container and send them really wherever we want around the world. But they’ve gone over to Florida. And I’ve just come back from a month of work over there putting the trays together, putting the soil in, compacting them and putting the grass on. So we’re in the grow-in phase.”We’ve got a business, a company over there called LandTek that are helping us with the grow-in phase. Then there’s a couple more strategic trips throughout the next six months to do some work on them and then transport them from Florida all the way up to New York where we’ll put them in and prepare them.”It’s a lot of work that’s gone into it so far. But the real work starts around the start of May. It’ll take two days to transport them up which is quite incredible. Never done that before. So there’s a lot of firsts. And then there’s getting them in the ground.”Four go into that venue, that pop-up stadium, 34,000-seat stadium. Eight games in 10 days. One of them is Pakistan and India which will be amazing. And then there’s six that go into the warm-up venue with so many teams rotating through and so much training.”Hough, who has also been dividing his time while also working on the Adelaide Oval pitch for the Test match between Australia and West Indies and Adelaide’s BBL pitches, said there is only likely to be one warm-up game at Eisenhower Park before the World Cup starts.”The first game is early June,” Hough said. “There’s probably going to be a warm-up game just to test the venue out in late May. But yeah, I pinch myself sometimes. For us, Adelaide Oval Turf Solutions, to have a little bit of involvement and assist with something that is quite historic in a World Cup in America for the first time.”

Moyes can forget Branthwaite by unleashing Everton's "special" academy gem

It will be a historic few months for David Moyes and Everton. The Toffees are all but guaranteed survival in the Premier League this season, sitting comfortably on 34 points in 15th in the table. In the long run, that will be vital.

A new era is afoot for one of England’s biggest clubs. The Merseysiders are set to leave Goodison Park and move to their new ground, Bramley Moore Dock, at the end of the campaign. The fact they will be playing top-flight football there is huge, for financial and footballing reasons.

Whilst Everton will look to build on this season in 2025/26, they might have to do so without star centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who has been linked with a move away.

The latest on Branthwaite's future

Toffees fans may be in for another turbulent summer when it comes to Branthwaite’s future. The defender was constantly linked with a move away in 2024, with Manchester United and Man City a reported destination, for as much as £60m.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

As we now know, the England international ended up staying at Goodison Park but might not be at the club for the first season in the new stadium. Fresh reports from various outlets, including Sky Sports, suggest the defender could leave the club in 2025.

It’s stated that the defender is ‘expected to further consider his Everton future’ in the coming weeks and months. This comes after he was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, which could increase his chances of a departure.

Branthwaite will not be short of suitors. Sky suggests the centre-back is a target for Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Real Madrid have reportedly scouted him, and United are also believed to be interested still.

Replacing the 22-year-old won’t be easy. He’s played 90 minutes in every single one of Moyes’ games in charge so far and is a crucial part of a defense which has certainly improved under the Scot.

Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite

However, perhaps the replacement for Branthwaite is right in front of Everton’s eyes, in their academy.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The academy star who can replace Branthwaite

Everton have had plenty of success over the years from their academy. Wayne Rooney is, of course, the most famous example, but the likes of Leon Osman are also recent success stories from the Toffees’ youth system.

Well, perhaps Reece Welch will be the next in line to represent the academy in the first team. If Branthwaite departs the club, he could be the man to step into his shoes, with the young centre-back making a real impression in the youth sides.

This term, the 21-year-old has played 11 times at youth level, captaining the side in the Premier League 2 seven times, keeping two clean sheets in that time. He also spent the first half of the season on loan in Belgium, for KMSK Deinze, but played just three games.

However, the Huddersfield-born defender did enjoy a more successful loan spell last season with League 2 outfit Forest Green Rovers. Despite the struggles they endured, he played 23 times for the club and was a key part of their backline.

Indeed, the stats via Sofascore suggest that, although it was a struggle for the team, Welch more than held his own. Per 90 minutes, he completed 43.1 passes, made 3.5 tackles and interceptions and won three aerial duels per 90 minutes.

Welch, who was described as a “special talent” by one tactical analyst, has already played for the Everton first team. With that being said, he only has two games and 65 minutes under his belt.

If Branthwaite did leave the club at the end of the season, Welch could be a ready-made replacement. He has already played first-team football at various levels and is a talented defender with the stats to back that theory up.
