Rob Keogh ton tops run glut for Northamptonshire

Cobb, Gay, McManus contribute fifties as Warwickshire bowlers battle

ECB Reporters Network26-Jun-2022Rob Keogh’s first century since the season’s opening game led the run glut for Northamptonshire on day one of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Wantage Road. The county’s longest-serving player struck 130 with 20 fours in a three-and-three-quarter-hour stay of elegant stroke play as the hosts reached 420 for 6. The right-hander shared a fifth-wicket stand of 161 with Josh Cobb (88) – all this after Emilio Gay had caressed his way to 70 in the morning session. For much of the day the defending champions’ bowling could be classed as wayward, skipper Will Rhodes the honourable exception with 2 for 44 from 20 frugal overs.Ricardo Vasconcelos, in his first game back from injury, didn’t cash in on his decision to bat first after winning the toss, making only 5 before driving loosely at one from Henry Brookes to be caught behind.South African international, Ryan Rickleton, parachuted in for two championship games to cover for Will Young, away on Test duty with New Zealand, was almost run out for nought before also falling cheaply to a brilliant left-handed catch by wicketkeeper Michael Burgess.Thereafter, the morning was dominated by Gay’s stylish innings. The young left-hander was beautifully still at the crease, compact in defence, playing the ball right in front of his eyes. From that base, Gay unfurled some sumptuous off and cover drives in reaching 50 from 62 balls. However, with a century in the offing, lunch beckoning and having just pulled Nathan McAndrew for successive fours, the former Bedford School scholar tried the shot a third time to a straighter bumper and only succeeded in finding the safe hands of Matt Lamb at fine leg. The way the youngster dragged himself off suggested he knew he’d missed an opportunity. When Luke Proctor fell lbw to the nagging accuracy of Rhodes, the hosts were 139 for 4. However, this brought together Keogh and Cobb, who feasted on some friendly offerings from the visitors for much of the afternoon. The two batters provided a great contrast of styles Keogh all timing and elegance as he peppered the mid-off and cover boundaries in racing to 50 at quicker than a run a ball with 11 fours. Cobb matched Keogh’s boundary count but took 25 balls more, mixing defence with brutal ball striking.Once passed 50 Cobb cut loose in what appeared to be a race to a hundred between the pair. However, on 88 the county’s one-day skipper pulled a rare long-hop from Rhodes which looked to be going for six until Craig Miles took a superb catch falling backwards just inside the rope at deep square.Keogh though found another batting ally in Lewis McManus and pushed on to complete a chanceless hundred soon after tea courtesy of an 18th four. The hosts had reached 372 for 5 by the time the second new ball was due and Oliver Hannon-Dalby made the shiny cherry count, ending Keogh’s vigil with one which bounced on him and took the edge, Dom Sibley taking the catch at slip.It was though their only reward as McManus became the fourth player to pass 50 shortly before the close.

Better than Tanaka: Leeds ace who made 116 passes was the real hero v Luton

Leeds United moved back to the top of the Championship table on Wednesday night with a comfortable win over Luton Town at Elland Road.

The Whites secured all three points in style, with a 3-0 victory, and kicked it off with an impressive, Paulo Di Canio-esque, volley from full-back Sam Byram.

Joel Piroe made it 2-0 just before half-time with a close-range poacher’s finish, before Dan James wrapped up the win with a terrific lobbed finish off the bench in the second half.

One of the team’s top performers on the night was not directly involved in any of those goals, however, as Ao Tanaka once again impressed in midfield.

Ao Tanaka's performance against Luton

The Japan international was constantly available to his teammates in the middle of the park and ended the 90 minutes with an eye-catching 114 out of 120 passes completed.

Tanaka, who had 135 touches of the ball, was always looking to take responsibility to progress the play for his side and played his passes quickly to put Luton on the back foot.

The former Fortuna Dusseldorf star was also strong out of possession. He won five of his seven ground duels, although lost his only aerial contest, to make three tackles and two interceptions to cut out Luton attacks.

These statistics illustrate how important he was to the side in and out of possession, despite not being directly involved in any major moments.

There was one Leeds player, however, who provided similar qualities on and off the ball and was even better than Tanaka – centre-back Pascal Struijk.

Pascal Struijk's performance against Luton

The Whites captain was the real hero for Daniel Farke’s side on the night with his terrific showing at the heart of the defence, as he showcased his ability on both sides of the game.

His biggest moment in the match came just after Leeds had taken the lead through Byram, as the defender incredibly cleared a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net off his own goal line, after it had been dinked over Illan Meslier

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth described it as an “acrobatic” clearance and started his post with “WOW”, which was also the collective response heard from the crowd afterward.

As you can see in the table above, Struijk also completed more passes and won more duels than Tanaka, whilst he was not dribbled past a single time by the Luton players.

These statistics show that the Dutch titan dominated the game with his defensive work and helped to control and dictate the match with his use of the ball.

Couple that with his miraculous clearance to prevent the away side from drawing level at 1-0 up and that is why he was Farke’s real hero and even better than Tanaka on Wednesday night.

"Terrific" £25k-p/w Everton star now pictured in training before Brentford

In what is quite the rarity, the international break has handed Everton some positive injury news, with one player given the time to complete his return to training ahead of his side’s next game against Brentford.

Everton injury news

The Toffees were left frustrated by a 0-0 draw against West Ham last time out to extend their winless run to three Premier League games. Keen to avoid another worrying run ahead of the festive period, Sean Dyche’s side play host to Brentford in the international break with a win potentially taking them as many as six points clear of the dropzone.

Ahead of their clash against the Bees, Everton have received plenty of good news too. They were given the chance to welcome Jarrad Branthwaite back from England duty early due to a slight knock, but given that he is expected to be fit in time to face Brentford, it’s no bad thing that the central defender has been given much-needed rest amid recent fitness concerns.

Meanwhile, Dyche has also been handed another boost on the injury front. As reported by Goodison News, Dwight McNeil has been pictured back in Everton training and could yet make his return to action against Brentford after the international break alongside Armando Broja.

Worth £59m: Everton must regret losing a star who's rivalling Messi & Kane

Everton once sold a young star who’s now worth £59m & rivalling Messi and Kane.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 15, 2024

The winger missed his side’s draw at West Ham as they put together a blunt offensive performance at the London Stadium – something his return should change. Earning a reported £25,000-a-week, McNeil has finally been stepping up for the Toffees this season, scoring four goals and assisting a further three in 12 games. Now, he has the chance to bounce back from a minor setback in style.

Given that McNeil has another eight days to return to full fitness, it seems likely that he will at least feature against Brentford on Saturday, November 23.

"Terrific" McNeil has become a key man for Everton

For some time, McNeil was a source of much frustration at Goodison Park as he struggled to get in amongst the goals and assists for all his hard work off the ball. Fast forward to the present day, however, and he is quickly becoming a key man at Everton. Having worked with Dyche at both Burnley and Everton, the manager’s trust is finally paying dividends.

Dyche, even when his winger struggled for form, has been full of praise for McNeil. The Everton boss told reporters as relayed by the Liverpool Echo at the end of the 2022/23 campaign: “He’s been terrific since I’ve been back with him and I want him to keep enjoying his football but also taking it on. I thought at Brighton he took it on.

“He is a player who is still maturing in my view and he is grasping and grabbing it and taking things forward and making things happen and that is very pleasing for him and pleasing for us.”

As Everton look to return to winning ways for the first time in three games, McNeil’s return will undoubtedly hand those at Goodison Park with a major boost.

Diogo Jota confirmed out of Arsenal v Liverpool, two others are late doubts

As Liverpool look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League, they’ll have to do so without one of Arne Slot’s key men against title rivals Arsenal at The Emirates, with two more Reds now late doubts as well.

Liverpool injury news

The Reds’ injury list is slowly beginning to increase in what is a worrying sign for Slot. Already, Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott find themselves sidelined long-term to particularly open the door for Caoimhin Kelleher to take his opportunity. The Irishman has so far grasped hold of his chance once again and will start against Arsenal hoping to secure Liverpool’s biggest result of the campaign so far.

The injury to Elliott is slightly more frustrating, meanwhile, given how the youngster was yet to really make his mark under Slot before being ruled out. Up against Arsenal though, the Reds will be feeling the full impact of at least one other absentee.

According to Slot, confirmed during his press conference, Diogo Jota will miss the Arsenal game after failing to travel to face RB Leipzig and coming off injured against Chelsea with a rib injury last weekend. There are also question marks over Federico Chiesa and Conor Bradley, who could return to training on Saturday but are unlikely to be fit enough to take full part.

"Cheeky" £24,000-p/w star favours Liverpool move after contract talks stall

He could replace Mohamed Salah…

1 ByTom Cunningham Oct 25, 2024

The Portugal international isn’t exactly unfamiliar with spells on the sidelines, with his struggle for full fitness often leaving fans to wonder what might have been if he could stay fit for the entirety of a campaign. Nonetheless, faced with another injury, Jota will have no choice but to sit out and hand the responsibility to Darwin Nunez in the biggest game of Slot’s tenure so far.

In a game that could reveal whether Liverpool are title pretenders or, indeed, contenders, Nunez must step up in place of his £140,000-a-week teammate.

Jota's incredible record vs Arsenal

When assessing those who can lead the Liverpool line, it is Jota who stands above the rest for his all-round quality. Where Nunez is erratic, Jota is clinical. Where Gakpo is subdued in that particular role, Jota is energised and at the centre of everything good that this Liverpool side does. So without him against Arsenal of all sides, the Reds are likely to suffer a big miss.

What’s more, given that Jota has scored eight goals and assisted another two in 15 games against Arsenal – his best record against a Premier League side – the Gunners will undoubtedly be pleased to see the forward taking his place in the stands rather than within Slot’s frontline.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Jota during his legendary tenure, saying via TNT Sports: “He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs. He has the technical skills, he has the physical skills and he is very smart and can learn all the tactical stuff pretty quick.”

The torch, however, now likely falls the way of Nunez to prove himself once and for all under Slot against Arsenal.

Gloucestershire appoint Dale Benkenstein as head coach

Former Proteas batter and batting coach returns to county cricket on a three-year deal

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Nov-2021Gloucestershire have appointed Dale Benkenstein, the former South Africa batter and batting coach, as head coach on a three-year contract.Benkenstein, 47, is also a former Durham captain who was head coach at Hampshire from 2014-16, helping them to reach two Vitality Blast Finals Days and secure promotion back to the top tier of the Championship in that time. He worked as Proteas batting coach from 2017-19 and has also coached South African side Dolphins. He joined Lancashire on a short-term contract as batting coach earlier this year and, most recently, Benkenstein was head coach at Mike Procter’s former school, Hilton College. He will lead Gloucestershire at least until the end of the 2024 season under a deal announced on Tuesday.”I am looking forward to working with a well-balanced squad of youth and experience and I feel the club as a whole have the ingredients to be consistently successful in all formats,” Benkenstein said. “It is exciting to be back involved in English county cricket where I have many fond memories.”Benkenstein made 300 List A and 264 first-class appearances during his 20-year career, scoring 15,962 first-class runs and more than 9,000 limited-overs runs.Born in Zimbabwe, he began his career at Natal, in South Africa, and after being named captain at the age of 22, took the side to four-day and one-day domestic titles. That led to Benkenstein making his ODI debut for South Africa against England in 1998 and he went on to play a total of 23 ODIs.He joined Durham in 2005 and captained them to their first major trophy in 2007, defeating Hampshire in the final of the Friends Provident competition. He then led Durham to back-to-back Championship titles in 2008 and 2009, the first in the club’s history. At Gloucestershire, Benkenstein will work alongside new performance director Steve Snell and assistant head coach Ian Harvey, who stepped in as interim head coach last March when Richard Dawson joined the ECB as elite performance pathway coach. Under Harvey, Gloucestershire won five of their group games and three divisional games, the most match wins for any side in this year’s Championship.Harvey said: “It’s been a huge honour for me to lead the team this season and I’m really proud of what the squads have achieved. Some of the performances in the County Championship in particular have been top class and there is no doubt these players have a bright future ahead.”I’ve been following the recruitment process with interest and there is no doubt that Dale is a great signing and I’m very excited to be working with him; I knew him as a fierce competitor on the pitch and I’m sure his style and considerable experience will produce great results for our club.”

Brendon McCullum: 'We were being paralysed a little bit by fear' at the start of IPL 2021

“I am unapologetic and unrelenting in my belief that we need to play a braver style of play”

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Sep-2021

“My job is to try and build something at KKR that is going to last far longer than I am going to last for the franchise”•BCCI

Seven matches. Just two wins in those. And Kolkata Knight Riders are seventh on the table of eight in IPL 2021 as the second leg of the tournament begins from September 19 in the UAE. The poor start, according to head coach Brendon McCullum, was because the players were “being paralysed a little bit by fear” at times in those early games, but he feels the two-time champions “can end it right”.”In regards to the tournament which is upcoming [the second part of IPL 2021], we can end it right,” McCullum told . “We can take the game on and we’re in a situation where we need things to go our way. We need to hit the ground running, challenge one another privately, support one another publicly and try and get the best out of one another in the next four-five weeks. Who knows where we can go with this.”The Knight Riders began their campaign with a ten-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, but then lost four games in a row before bouncing back with a dominant five-wicket win over Punjab Kings, before losing one more, to Delhi Capitals. That more-down-than-up run has been down to inconsistent performances. Dinesh Karthik (123 runs at 30.75, strike rate 138.20), Andre Russell (163, 27.16 and 155.23) and Rahul Tripathi (187, 26.71 and 135.50) have been good with the bat, but captain Eoin Morgan has been poor, with just 92 runs in seven innings, and a strike rate of 112.19, while Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill, regulars at the top of the order, haven’t been able to get a move on either. With the ball, Varun Chakravarthy and Pat Cummins – the Australian is unavailable for the remainder of the tournament – have been the star performers, but the rest of the bowlers haven’t been as tough to get away.”There were sometimes throughout the season when I just felt we were being paralysed a little bit by fear,” McCullum said. “I wasn’t able to free the guys up enough to understand that and that’s sort of a challenge for me. But it is also a good challenge for the guys as well that they need to push the envelope of their own thinking as well.Related

IPL 2021 Part 1: Samson's refused single, Jadeja's 37-run over, Brar's golden scalps

“Hopefully we will be able to strip away a bit of the angst which had built up in the first part of the season, just go out there and try and enjoy ourselves. That’s the ambition that I have got for the franchise and hence why I am unapologetic and unrelenting in my belief that we need to play a braver style of play.”McCullum, a Knight Riders player when the IPL kicked off in 2008 – remember innings – took charge as chief coach of the Kolkata franchise, as well as at Trinbago Knight Riders, in 2020. While Trinbago went on to win the CPL title in 2020 at the end of a remarkable unbeaten run [they topped the table and are in the semi-finals this season too], the IPL team didn’t have it as good, failing to qualify for the playoffs. This season has not been much better. As far as McCullum is concerned, though, his focus is on the bigger picture. “When we left India [in May], I think everyone understood me as a coach on how I want our team to play,” McCullum said. “I am unapologetic about that as well because my job is to try and build something at KKR that is going to last far longer than I am going to last for the franchise.”
