BBL draft preview: availability key amid international and league clashes

The BBL season has been shortened but there will still be a squeeze on many of the leading names

Alex Malcolm01-Sep-2023Adelaide StrikersCurrent list: Wes Agar, James Bazley, Cameron Boyce, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Travis Head, Henry Hunt, Thomas Kelly, Chris Lynn, Ben Manenti, D’Arcy Short, Matt Short, Henry ThorntonLast playing XI: Matt Short, Travis Head (capt), Alex Carey (wk), Adam Hose, Colin de Grandhomme, Ryan Gibson, Harry Nielsen, Cameron Boyce, Wes Agar, Harry Conway, Peter SiddleLast season’s overseas/retention options: Rashid Khan, Colin de Grandhomme, Adam HoseDraft picks: 2, 10, 23, and 26What might they want?
Strikers are almost certain to take long-time favourite Rashid Khan with pick 2 to the point where they inquired with other clubs about a possible pick trade, knowing they would use the retention on him. Beyond that, there are some clear needs for Strikers. Quality top and middle-order batting is their main target given Travis Head and Alex Carey are set to be unavailable for almost the whole season. A middle-order player who can bowl seam up would be ideal although given they will get overs out of both Matt Short and D’Arcy Short it is not critical.Their domestic attack is reasonably well-balanced and has been set up to try and withstand Rashid not being available for the back end of the tournament due to his SA20 commitments. He looks set to only be available for the first seven games. But they will want more availability in their other picks and then to find a replacement for Rashid post-draft. Adam Hose and Colin de Grandhomme are both available again and showed glimpses at times last year, but they ultimately did not provide the run-scoring output needed to help Strikers reach finals. There may be others in the gold, silver or bronze band with full availability who could be of value.Brisbane HeatCurrent list: Usman Khawaja, Xavier Bartlett, Josh Brown, Max Bryant, Spencer Johnson, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Jimmy Peirson, Will Prestwidge, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell SwepsonLast playing XI: Josh Brown, Sam Heazlett, Nathan McSweeney, Jimmy Peirson (capt), Sam Hain, Max Bryant, James Bazley, Michael Neser, Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson, Matthew KuhnemannLast season’s overseas/retention options: Sam Hain, Colin Munro, Sam Billings, Ross Whiteley, Tom BantonDraft picks: 7, 15, 18, and 31What might they want?
Like Strikers, last year’s finalists have a very clear need for top and middle-order batters given they have a very strong home-grown attack that took them all the way to the final. They are set to be without Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne all season due to Test duty. At pick 7 they may need to use the retention options available to them if they want Sam Billings or Colin Munro. But both are only available for six to nine games which may not suit Heat. They would prefer longer availability in a platinum pick and the only player to fit that criteria who is not a retention player is Tom Kohler-Cadmore.Tom Banton is a non-platinum option who can be retained after playing for them previously but he is headed to the SA20 which reduces his availability to just six to nine games. They will likely target two batters with a preference for those who can handle the bounce and pace of the Gabba. Further down in the third or fourth round they may look for a power-hitting allrounder. They had Ross Whiteley last year and he is available for the whole season plus finals. They have lost local James Bazley to Strikers. An allrounder would deepen the batting and give them the option of playing their two local spinners.Harry Brook could still get interest despite his other commitments•Getty ImagesHobart HurricanesCurrent list: Iain Carlisle, Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade, Mac WrightLast playing XI: Caleb Jewell, Zak Crawley, Mac Wright, Ben McDermott, Tim David, Matthew Wade (capt/wk), Faheem Ashraf, Joel Paris, Nathan Ellis, Wil Parker, Riley Meredith Last season’s overseas/retention options: Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Zak Crawley, Jimmy Neesham, Asif Ali, Sandeep LamichhaneDraft picks: 3, 11, 22, and 27What might they want?
One high-quality middle-order bat and a pace bowling allrounder are the two desires for Hurricanes to complement the local talent they have. Harry Brook and Will Jacks have both played for Hurricanes previously but do not qualify as retention options. However, either would make the batting look incredibly destructive but they are both only available for six to nine games with two England tours bookending the BBL and both look set to be part of at least one or both. Hurricanes’ need for an allrounder could see them test out Sydney Sixers’ mettle given Tom Curran and Chris Jordan could be available at pick 3. Sixers can’t retain both so Hurricanes could pinch one of them, but they too are only available for six to nine games. In the later rounds, Netherlands allrounder Bas de Leede might be a smokey given he impressed Hurricanes head of strategy Ricky Ponting in last year’s World Cup but he also has limited availability. Shadab Khan, who is a retention option, would also fit nicely but he is also only available for six to nine matches. There is less of a need for an overseas spinner this year for Hurricanes after they signed two local spinners, Paddy Dooley and Peter Hatzoglou. There should still be other good all-round or batting options available with Hurricanes’ second pick at No.11. Hurricanes look set to sign three overseas as they currently only have 12 on their local list so they could add some fast-bowling depth in the late rounds depending on how their first two picks go.Melbourne RenegadesCurrent list: Nic Maddinson, Aaron Finch, Jake Fraser-McGurk, MacKenzie Harvey, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Kane Richardson, Tom Rogers, Peter Siddle, Jon Wells, Will Sutherland, Adam ZampaLast playing XI Shaun Marsh, Martin Guptill, Sam Harper (wk), Aaron Finch (capt), Matt Critchley, Will Sutherland, Jon Wells, Tom Rogers, Corey Rocchiccioli, David Moody, Fawad AhmedLast season’s overseas/retention options: Matt Critchley, Martin Guptill, Akeal Hosein, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad NabiDraft picks: 4, 12, 21, and 28What might they want?
Aside from some youth to balance out one of the oldest lists in BBL history, Renegades are definitely shopping for a world-class batter who could possibly keep as well. At pick 4, Quinton de Kock looks incredibly enticing if he hasn’t already been taken. South Africa does have a T20I and ODI series against India at home in mid-December but de Kock’s national commitments for bilateral series remain fluid. If he were not to play in those games, Renegades could get eight BBL games out of him before the SA20 given how the fixtures fall for Renegades which might be a better result than other platinum picks in his availability bracket. But picking him would be a gamble. Coach David Saker’s England ties could see any of the star England batters targeted but they may have as little or less availability than de Kock early in the tournament due to a white-ball tour of the Caribbean. Jacks could be one of those, particularly with his offspin ability, but again availability will be a question. The signing of Adam Zampa means a spinner is not as crucial as previous years for them but a spin bowling allrounder and or a second spinner would also be a good fit. Mohammad Nabi is available to be retained and Renegades could still hold their retention pick until later in the draft. There should be some other options as not many teams have that specific need given the general nature of the BBL pitches. Renegades play on unique surfaces at Docklands and Geelong where a second or third spin option can be very valuable.Short-term impact? Haris Rauf has strong links with Melbourne Stars•Getty ImagesMelbourne Stars
Current list: Scott Boland, Joe Burns, Hilton Cartwright, Brody Couch, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Sam Harper, Campbell Kellaway, Nick Larkin, Glenn Maxwell, Joel Paris, Tom Rogers, Mark Steketee, Marcus Stoinis, Beau WebsterLast playing XI Joe Clarke (wk), Tom Rogers, Campbell Kellaway, Marcus Stoinis, Hilton Cartwright, Beau Webster, Nick Larkin, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Luke Wood, Liam Hatcher, Adam Zampa (capt)Last season’s overseas/retention options: Trent Boult (not in the draft), Joe Clarke, Luke Wood, Haris RaufDraft picks: 1, 9, 24, and 25What might they want?
Stars almost have too many needs to make a really clear-cut decision with pick 1. They would want the best player available in the draft but they do not have a spinner currently on their list after Zampa’s departure and they have often played two international spinners at the MCG. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Shadab might not be retained by other clubs and could be worth pick 1 but both have only nominated for six to nine games. Equally, there are likely to be some good spinners available in later rounds. New Stars recruit Sam Harper nominated his former Melbourne Renegades team-mate Akeal Hosein as a great option for the MCG but he too is only available for up to nine games. They would also love a world-class fast bowler and/or an opener to complement the powerful middle order. Haris Rauf and Joe Clarke are both retention options, but it is doubtful Stars would use the first pick on either player. Rauf’s availability would be a worry even though he is a Stars favourite and a proven performer. A powerful left-hander like de Kock could well be something Stars look at, but they don’t need him to keep necessarily with the addition of Harper.Perth ScorchersCurrent list: Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Cooper Connolly, Aaron Hardie, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kelly, Mitch Marsh, Hamish McKenzie, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Sam WhitemanLast playing XI Stephen Eskinazi, Cameron Bancroft, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis (wk), Ashton Turner (capt), Nick Hobson, Cooper Connolly, Andrew Tye, Matthew Kelly, David Payne, Jason BehrendorffLast season’s overseas/retention options: Stephen Eskinazi, Faf du Plessis, David Payne, Adam Lyth, Tymal Mills, Laurie EvansDraft picks: 8, 16, 17, and 32What might they want?
The hat-trick-seeking defending champions will likely stick to their winning game plan and pass in the platinum round as they did last year which probably rules out the retention of Faf du Plessis. They may only need two overseas to complement their all-conquering local list and will pick for specific needs and full availability although they did pick three in the end last year. Another powerful, smart middle-order player might be a target in the gold or silver band. Laurie Evans was very popular in Perth and important for Scorchers in their 2021-22 title. Even after missing last year, he can be retained. He is available for all home and away games but not finals due to the ILT20. If they don’t take Evans they will want a batter who can handle the extra pace and bounce of Perth Stadium. Stephen Eskinazi and Adam Lyth are both fully available for the season and finals and are also retention pick options.Scorchers have historically recruited an overseas fast bowler despite their strong local contingent, in order to help manage workloads in a tournament of tight turnarounds and heavy travel. Tymal Mills is a retention option but he is now in the platinum band after they got him in the bronze band last year with pick 30, even though he didn’t play in the end. Mills is the only platinum pick to make himself fully available for the whole season plus finals but at the same time, he still has ambitions of playing for England on the Caribbean T20I tour in December. Scorchers would love someone with extra pace to cover Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris if either have injury issues or international duties. But David Payne was very good last year and is fully available.James Vince will likely be on Sydney Sixers’ radar again•Getty ImagesSydney SixersCurrent list: Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird, Joel Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Hayden Kerr, Todd Murphy, Steve O’Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe, Jordan SilkLast playing XI Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe (wk), Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques (capt), Jordan Silk, Hayden Kerr, Dan Christian, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, Steve O’Keefe, Izharulhaq NaveedLast season’s overseas/retention options: James Vince, Izharulhaq Naveed, Naveen-ul-Haq, Chris Jordan, Tom Curran, Carlos BrathwaiteDraft picks: 6, 14, 19, and 30What might they want?
Sixers face a tricky dilemma with their retention pick given three players who have been Sixers’ favourites in James Vince, Jordan and Tom Curran are all platinum picks and the two bowling allrounders could well be sought after by Hurricanes. Sixers don’t necessarily need another bowling allrounder. Even though Dan Christian has retired, Sean Abbott’s development as a batter in the last 12 months means he could move higher in the order. They probably need a top-order batter like Vince more than Curran or Jordan given Steve Smith will likely not be available at all this summer due to Test duty. Vince is also available for all 10 home and away games, unlike the two allrounders. They may target another fast bowler with some extra pace or unique skill to complement their locals. Izharulhaq Naveed bowled very well for them last season and is fully available again, including for finals. Carlos Brathwaite has also nominated for the draft having missed the last two seasons of the BBL. He played a key role in Sixers’ last title in 2020-21 as a power surge bowling specialist and could be someone who they could trust again with a later pick but he is only available for six to nine games.Sydney ThunderCurrent list: Cameron Bancroft, Ollie Davies, Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Liam Hatcher, Nathan McAndrew, Blake Nikitaras, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Gurinder Sandhu, Jason Sangha, Tanveer Sangha, David WarnerLast playing XI Matthew Gilkes (wk), David Warner, Jason Sangha, Ollie Davies, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting, Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Gurinder Sandhu, Usman QadirLast season’s overseas/retention options: Rilee Rossouw, Alex Hales, Usman Qadir, Fazalhaq FarooqiDraft picks: 5, 13, 20, and 29What might they want?
It will be a shock if Alex Hales isn’t Thunder’s first choice or isn’t retained by them if he is picked by Stars, Renegades or Hurricanes ahead of pick 5. He has full availability up until finals when he heads to the ILT20 and has no international commitments. He is the perfect fit for Thunder given David Warner might not be available until late in the tournament if he gets the Test match farewell he is hoping for.Thunder could add a second batter as their domestic all-round and bowling stocks look quite strong and well-balanced, particularly with Tanveer Sangha back fully fit. Liam Hatcher has been added as a pace bowler in place of Brendan Doggett. But another high-class or experienced overseas quick would also be a useful addition for Thunder. Someone with added pace or an ability to swing the new ball in the powerplay in the Sydney summer humidity would probably be preferable.

Phil Salt sprinkles touch of class as Lancashire secure home quarter-final

Northants struggle with bat before knockout hopes ended by six-wicket defeat

Lancashire made it through to the Vitality Blast quarter-finals with a comfortable six-wicket victory that also ended Northants Steelbacks’ qualification hopes.Phil Salt smashed a 51-ball 74 as Lancashire chased down the Steelbacks 138 for seven with twenty balls to spare. The result means the Lightning will return to Emirates Old Trafford next Friday, where they are now unbeaten in 21 home games, to host their quarter-final tie against Surrey.Northants struck two early blows as the hosts set off in pursuit of their target, Jos Buttler cracking a short ball from David Willey to Saif Zaib on the cover boundary for 11, immediately after he had hit the bowler for six and four from consecutive deliveries. Steven Croft swiftly followed after top edging Tom Taylor to AJ Tye for 5.That left the Lightning ending the powerplay on 43 for 2 but Salt picked up the scoring with a six off Freddie Heidreich during a 35-run partnership in five overs with Liam Livingstone.Livingstone, the stand-in Lightning skipper, went for 11 slicing Taylor to Ricardo Vasconcelos at gully as Lancashire reached halfway on 74 for 3 but Daryl Mitchell was quickly into his stride driving Taylor for six into the pavilion seats.Salt continued to score freely as the hosts reduced their target to a-run-a-ball 44 before a mix-up saw Mitchell run out for 17. Undeterred, Salt reached a 40-ball half century by smashing Tye for six over long-on, and then took four, six, four off Justin Broad in the fifteenth over as the Lightning raced towards their target. The opening bat ended the contest in style with six off Taylor in the seventeenth over to finish unbeaten on a Lancashire-best 74 alongside Dane Vilas.A fine opening spell of 2 for 14 from three overs by Wood, after Livingstone had put the visitors in to bat, had Northants quickly on the back foot at the start of their innings. Vasconcelos was brilliantly caught for 12 by wicketkeeper Buttler diving to his left, followed by Emilio Gay who chipped the left arm quick to Luke Wells at mid-on two balls later.Northants then suffered a big blow when Willey departed for 10 attempting to hit Livingstone over midwicket to leave the Steelbacks struggling on 47 for 3, midway through the seventh over.Chris Lynn led an initial fightback launching Livingstone for consecutive sixes in the ninth over but he was then bowled for 35 aiming a big heave at Wells with the visitors on 74 for 4, one ball into the 11th over.Zaib pulled Mitchell to Wells at fine leg for 12 and the Steelbacks only managed to get any impetus into their innings during a 40-run partnership for the sixth wicket between McManus and Broad. McManus hoisted a slower ball from Tom Bailey into the hands of Wood at long-on having made 22 while Broad smashed a six over midwicket in his unbeaten 34 off 26 balls.Wood returned to bowl Tye for 1 as Northants closed on 138 for 7.

De Gea 2.0: Man Utd already let an "underrated" Onana upgrade leave for £0

In the view of club legend Gary Neville, “being Manchester United goalkeeper is the hardest position in English football”.

For every Peter Schmeichel there is a Massimo Taibi. For every Edwin van de Sar, a Roy Carroll. Managing to find a quality, long-term solution in the goalkeeping ranks has not always been plain sailing – just ask Andre Onana.

The scrutiny that surrounded his predecessor, David De Gea, has been replicated with the former Inter star, with questions already being asked over Onana’s suitability to life at Old Trafford.

Signed by his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag on a £47.2m deal in the summer of 2023 – a year on from having been available on a free – the Cameroonian ‘keeper has endured a real mixed stint in Manchester, putting together a highlight reel full of comical gaffes.

Despite starting the new season on strong footing, amid notable double saves against the likes of Crystal Palace and Fenerbahce, the 28-year-old has regressed again in recent months, having now made three errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this term.

Onana

Those woes – which include his mistake for Brighton and Hove Albion’s third goal last month – have sparked reports that an early exit could be on the cards for the experienced stopper, with new boss Ruben Amorim seemingly intent on shaking up his goalkeeping department.

The latest on Andre Onana's future at Man Utd

There could well be a summer of upheaval ahead, with Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst reporting that the number of departures could reach double figures for the Red Devils.

Among those looking set for an exit is veteran goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, amid the impending expiry of his contract, with the academy graduate having played just three first-team games following his return back in 2021.

That likely departure has come following further claims by Luckhurst that Amorim is keen on signing a new goalkeeper ahead of next season, thus throwing into doubt the futures of both Altay Bayindir and Onana.

In the case of the latter man, recent reports have indicated that the one-time Ajax hero could be open to sealing a move away from the Theatre of Dreams, with clubs in Saudi Arabia seemingly showing an interest.

Potential succession plans appear to have already been drawn up, with the latest speculation indicating that United have lodged an enquiry over Burnley sensation, James Trafford, with the 22-year-old having previously been on the books at rivals Manchester City.

James Trafford

The likelihood is that the Englishman would command a fee in the region of £30m, however, with United perhaps left to regret losing a dream alternative on a free. And no, it’s not De Gea…

Man Utd have already offloaded an Onana upgrade

The goalkeeping positions could well be in for major change at both Manchester clubs, with uncertainty surrounding Ederson at the Etihad, with the Brazilian having just a year left on his current deal.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Amid City’s need for a replacement, recent reports have indicated that Pep Guardiola and co are keeping an eye on Torino number one, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, with the Serbian stopper having caught the eye in Serie A in recent times.

Interestingly, the 28-year-old – who his manager Paolo Vanoli described as “underrated” – was actually previously on the books at United, having been signed as a teenager back in the summer of 2014.

Following that move, the then-youngster subsequently returned to former club, Vojvodina, on loan for the 2014/15 campaign, before signing for Lechia Gdansk on a permanent basis in November 2015.

The rising star had failed to gain a work permit in England, hence the brief nature of his association with the club, with United forced into releasing the 6 foot 8 giant for nothing.

Fast forward almost a decade, and the 28-year-old is now shining in Italy’s top flight, having made 149 appearances for his current side since arriving in Turin in 2017, racking up 51 clean sheets in that time.

This season, in particular, Milinkovic-Savic has been at the peak of his powers after conceding just 31 goals in 28 league games, while Onana, by contrast, has shipped 40 goals in 29 league outings back in Manchester.

As indicated in the table above, the Serbian has outperformed his United counterpart across a string of metrics across the last 365 days, with it no surprise that those at the Etihad have begun to register an interest.

Not only is the 19-cap international seemingly a big upgrade on Onana, but he is also deemed to be a similar player to De Gea among those in their position in Europe’s top five leagues, as per FBref.

David de Gea misses penalty vs Villarreal

Like Milinkovic-Savic, the Spaniard – who also departed on a free transfer in 2023 after 12 years at United – has been in fine form of late for Fiorentina, as indicated by his record with regard to save percentage and his goals against record.

The debate over whether Ten Hag was right to trade De Gea for Onana will rage on. As for the Torino star, he is simply among a growing list of ex-United ‘keepers – including Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone – who have gone on to shine elsewhere.

Perhaps, if City’s interest does become more concrete, he will finally end up in Manchester after all…

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a double-hundred in just about two-and-half sessions as West Zone took control, despite South’s 57-run first-innings lead on the third day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore. At the end of third day’s play, West Zone were 376 for 3, courtesy Jaiswal’s unbeaten 209 off 244 balls that included 23 fours and three sixes.West now have a lead of 319 and even if they declare at lunch on day four, they will have five sessions to force an outright victory although the track is getting easier for batting with no considerable wear and tear. For South, it will be about batting out the fourth innings and winning the trophy by virtue of first-innings lead.Jaiswal shared 169-run third-wicket stand with Shreyas Iyer (71) and then put on an unbroken 58-run stand for the fourth wicket with Sarfaraz Khan (30*).It was a day that will be best remembered for the duel between two powerhouse performers in this year’s domestic cricket – left-handed opener Jaiswal and left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore. After Jaiswal had failed in the first innings, he showed more positive intent in the second after South were dismissed for 327, with an addition of only nine runs to their overnight score of 318 for 7.Once West came out, Jaiswal was severe on South pacers Basil Thampi (0 for 67 in 9 overs) and CV Stephen (0 for 27 in 6 overs) as he and Priyank Panchal (40) added 110 runs at little under five per over for the opening stand.South captain Hanuma Vihari missed the trick when he introduced Sai Kishore (27-5-100-2) only as second change. Panchal was caught off Sai Kishore’s bowling and Ajinkya Rahane was then trapped leg before by the offspinner K Gowtham (33-1-139-1).But South’s joy was short-lived as Jaiswal started using his feet to good effect. The two spinners went for a combined 239 runs in 60 overs.Jaiswal got good support from Iyer, who hit four fours and two sixes before getting dismissed while going for a glory shot off Sai Kishore’s bowling. Having missed a half-century in the first innings, Iyer didn’t show enough patience in the second to score a hundredJaiswal hit Gowtham with the turn for a six and didn’t let Sai Kishore settle into one line as he repeatedly came down the track to disturb his rhythm. He also had a six off seamer Stephen’s bowling. There were many boundaries between cover and extra-cover region and one such shot off Gowtham brought up his double-hundred. Jaiswal let out a war cry and got a standing ovation from the West dressing room.

Moeen Ali: Leading England in Pakistan an 'awesome' honour

Stand-in captain proud to take charge in country where his grandfather was born

Matt Roller19-Sep-2022The sense of occasion will not be lost on Moeen Ali when he walks out for the toss at Karachi’s National Stadium on Tuesday night. Jos Buttler’s calf injury means that he will captain England against Pakistan, the country from which his grandfather emigrated after the second world war, on their first tour of the country in 17 years. He has led England four times before but this time will feel different. “Being captain, regardless of who it’s against, is a great honour,” he said. “But to do it in Pakistan, coming back after so long… on top of that, having family who migrated from here back in the day, it’s amazing to lead the England side. It’s awesome.”Along with Adil Rashid, his close friend, Moeen is one of the two most prominent British Asian cricketers of his generation. “I feel like I represent my religion, parents, and everything,” he said. “It’s a very proud moment for me and my family, my mum and dad, everybody. Everyone who I feel I represent is very happy for me.”Related

How the PSL helped bring about England's return to Pakistan

When England last toured in 2005, Moeen was a teenager on an Under-19 tour of Bangladesh. He does not remember much about it – “was that the one we won in the dark?” – but his cousin, Kabir Ali, was part of the limited-overs squad and nearly pulled off an improbable win in the fourth ODI.For most of his international career, he feared he would never get this opportunity. “I’m somebody that wants to play cricket in every cricketing nation,” he said. “Pakistan and Zimbabwe were the two I’ve really wanted to tour. It’s amazing that we’re here: it’s a big thing for England to come to Pakistan.”When the teams played in the UAE in 2015, the prospect of a return to Pakistan “was just never spoken about”, Moeen recalled. “But then, I thought this might have come a bit earlier: we were due to come last year. Then we heard that we wouldn’t be coming.”The ECB’s decision to pull out of that two-match tour at the last minute drew strong criticism, both in Pakistan and back home. Was he disappointed? “Of course. You don’t know if you’re going to come the next year, because things change and all that.”He used to visit family in Pakistan as a young boy, then returned to train in his father’s academy as a teenager but did not come back for 15 years until the PSL, where he represented Multan Sultans in 2020. “It wasn’t just about coming over to play PSL; it was also to play cricket in Pakistan, be part of that and almost put it back on the map.”He is still weighing up whether or not to make himself available for England’s Test tour here, which takes place immediately after the T20 World Cup. “I’m not sure yet. I’ve obviously got to speak to Baz McCullum… I want to see how this goes first.”There is a sense of regret that Moeen is speaking in the executive boardroom of the five-star hotel to which England are confined throughout their stay in Karachi. Barely ten minutes’ walk away, hundreds of locals are playing tape-ball cricket at the old polo ground but the players’ VVIP status means their experience of Pakistan will be limited to two hotels, two stadiums and the journeys between them.”Sometimes it can feel like you could be anywhere in the world,” he says. “You’re in the hotel and you’re stuck in it: you could be in Barbados. We’re obviously here to play cricket and win, but also for the crowds and to experience all that.”It’s been really good so far, it’s just not easy when you can’t go out. Not mentally or anything, just more that you want to see the country as much as you can. That’s the sad thing, actually, about the tour.”Moeen Ali will captain England in their first international in Pakistan since 2005•Getty ImagesBut England are not taking their status for granted, with millions of rupees poured into their presidential-style security at a time when so much of Pakistan is suffering due to the heavy flooding that has destroyed homes, crops, livestock and health facilities.Proceeds from ticket sales for Tuesday’s first T20 international will go to the prime minster’s flood relief fund, and England’s players have made a donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee fundraiser that has been matched by the ECB.”These things, for me, are more important [than cricket],” Moeen said. “If we can do as much as we can to raise funds or help in any way, that’s really important. Those are the most important things in life and sometimes you do feel bad.”You’re here on tour, playing cricket and getting paid and there are people not far away who are struggling. Sometimes you as players are probably bringing a smile on their face by playing and just taking their mind off it or whatever. But it is really sad.”At 7.30pm on Tuesday night, the cricket will take over as England play the first of 11 games (seven in this series, three against Australia, and an official warm-up against – who else? – Pakistan) which they will use to build up for next month’s T20 World Cup. After a poor white-ball summer, they could do with a series win.”It’s important we don’t put pressure on ourselves and say ‘we are going to win the World Cup’. I don’t think we’re favourites now; we are one of the better sides, but not favourites. This summer was quite poor for us. We didn’t play very well at all. This is going to be the starting point: you are going to see a real change in the way this side plays and goes about things.”In the meantime, one thing is taking up more of Moeen’s time than anything else: sorting out free tickets. “It’s a bit of a killer for me at the moment,” he said with a grin. “For some reason, a lot of friends are over here from England who I know quite well.”There are a lot of people in England who know people over here who need tickets. I’ve had so many messages.” Whether they make it to the National Stadium or not, Tuesday night promises to be a memorable occasion.

Finger injury rules Jordan out of remainder of Hundred

Chris Jordan has been ruled out of the rest of the Hundred after picking up an injury to the middle finger on his right hand.Jordan suffered the injury when fielding off his own bowling in Southern Brave’s defeat to London Spirit on Friday night, getting his finger in the way when Kieron Pollard attempted to swing him down the ground for four.He continued to bowl in that game and faced four balls with the bat in Brave’s run chase, but missed their game against Oval Invincibles on Sunday and has now been ruled out of the tournament altogether.Brave are expected to sign at least one replacement player before their fixture against Manchester Originals on Thursday night, after Tymal Mills was also ruled out of the tournament.Mahela Jayawardene, their head coach, said after Sunday’s game: “We have a few days before our next game so we will make some plans and see who is out there and available.”Jordan is the latest injury concern for England ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year, though will hope to be fit in time to tour Pakistan in September.Chris Woakes and Mark Wood are both returning to fitness and will not play any part in the Hundred, while Richard Gleeson, who impressed on debut this summer, has been struggling with a niggle that has ruled him out of all four Originals games so far.
