“You don’t know what you’re doing!” Mr Chairman

A lone figure sits in a recently vacated office. A smouldering gun rests silently in his hand. He knows this was an extreme measure and he could well live to regret it, but he could no longer ignore the growing unrest around him. Outside, he can hear the latest name being scratched off the door. Another manager has been fired.

Martin Allen became the latest name to join the list of controversial managerial departures this season. Mick McCarthy and Neil Warnock have both been dismissed from the top flight whilst fellow League One side Huddersfield recently axed Lee Clarke, despite just three defeats in 55 matches.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway took to his Independent column to launch a scathing attack on ignorant chairmen that grace the Football League.

“It is all madness but that’s what you get when you have chairmen who don’t really know much about the game.

“Some chairmen have egos so big they can’t cope – and that is when we get the boot.”

It’s important to remember that despite the wealth that is splashed about in the modern game, very few clubs are ever likely to make a profit. Therefore from an owner’s perspective, a business that makes a loss can only be justified if it remains successful.

There seems to be two main types of chairman, the foreign entrepreneur who uses the club as an extension of his wealth or the ‘fan’ of the club, whose vision and judgment is often clouded by their emotions. Either way if you fail to match the targets laid out before you or replicate past achievements then you’ll barely have time to decorate your new office.

Roman Abramovich is arguably the most frequent wielder of the sack axe, having appointed an impressive seven managers since his takeover in 2003. His most recent dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti raised a few eyebrows considering his maiden double winning season, but it appears his lust for the Champions League knows no boundaries.

Sheikh Mansour has also coupled his injection of millions into the club with the ruthless dismissal of Mark Hughes. During his brief 18-month spell in charge Hughes had guided City to sixth in the League, having lost only twice in the league all season, plus he had reached the semi-finals of the Carling Cup. It seems however that perfection is the standard requirement for the Premier League elite these days.

It would be harsh to tarnish all league chairmen with the same brush. Wigan’s Dave Whelan has stood firmly by Roberto Martinez despite their constant flirtation with the drop zone. His allegiance paid off when Wigan avoided relegation on the final day of last season, yet it remains to be seen whether they can repeat the same feat this time round.

Elsewhere Blackburn owners the Venky’s have been, dare I say chicken, in regards to sacking Steve Kean, much to the displeasure of Rovers fans. Phil Gartside and Randy Lerner have also stuck by their men in the face of growing criticism from their fans. On the surface these actions appear loyal and commendable but let’s not forget that these managers were the chairmen’s own appointments and dismissing them would be acknowledging that they were wrong in the first place, and no one likes doing that.

As I’m writing this article the news of Niall Quinn’s departure is spreading like wildfire on Twitter. The former Sunderland chairman has achieved a great deal during the past six years including guiding the club back into the Premier League under Roy Keane. It’s also worth pointing out that former manager Steve Bruce was sacked just a month after Ellis Short replaced Quinn as chairman, although few would question that decision today.

Despite the apparent trigger-happy culture that surrounds football management, just two managers have been sacked in the top flight. Is this the start of a more understanding, considerate ethos amongst chairmen? Doubtful, as always it’s largely due to the vast expenditure required to turf out the old and implement the new. However, Martin O’Neill’s inspired revival at Sunderland may just prompt a few more chairmen to partake in a spot of spring-cleaning.

Muamba leaves hospital

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba’s health has improved to the extent that he has been discharged from hospital.

The former England under-21 man collapsed on the White Hart Lane pitch in the Trotters’ FA Cup clash with Tottenham on March 17th, and faced a real struggle for his life.

However, after making heroic gains to stay alive, Muamba will now return home.

“Barts Health can confirm that Fabrice Muamba has now been discharged following several weeks of treatment,” a hospital spokesman stated on the Bolton website.

“All our staff wish him the very best in his ongoing recovery.”

Muamba was quick to praise the medical staff that had cared for him, and ultimately saved his life.

“I am naturally very pleased to be discharged from hospital and would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to every single member of staff at The London Chest Hospital who have played a part in my care.

“Their dedication, professionalism and expertise is simply amazing and I will forever be in their debt. I also wish to say thank you to all the many well-wishers who have sent thousands of messages of support.

Kenny Dalglish’s future up in the air

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has held a meeting in Boston with the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group, with his future as the Anfield outfit’s manager unclear according to The Guardian.

The Scottish coach had an excellent impact on the side when he first took over the Reds hotseat, but a poor 2011-12 campaign saw the Merseysiders finish in lowly 8th place.

The club’s American owners summoned Dalglish to the Unites States earlier this week, but it is believed that principal John W Henry failed to give the Scot any assurances over his future, and he will now have to wait to see the board’s decision.

FSG were keen for Liverpool to challenge for a top-four finish this term, and are said to be frustrated at the continued exclusion from the Champions League.

Dalglish still has two years left on his contract at Anfield, but both he and assistant Steve Clarke will need to wait and see whether they will be at the club next season.

Carlos Tevez slams Ferguson

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has refused to apologise to Sir Alex Ferguson after holding up a banner saying ‘RIP Fergie’ during his side’s title celebrations this week.

The Etihad Stadium outfit paraded the Premier League title through the city on Monday, with the Argentina international sighted holding up the banner taking a swipe at the Manchester United boss.

Although City and Tevez both issued apologises to the legendary Scottish manager soon after, claiming the banner had been handed to the South American by a fan, the temperamental forward has made statements to the contrary.

“It seems Ferguson is the president of England,” Tevez told reporters back in Argentina, published by The Telegraph.

“Each time he speaks badly about a player, and he has said the worst about me, I never asked him to apologise. But if somebody makes a joke about him, you must apologise to him.

“But I don’t apologise. There’s no relationship at all between me and Ferguson,” he confessed.

The 20 Premier League Players left in ‘Transfer Limbo’

The word limbo can be defined as any status where a person is held up, and nothing can be done until another action happens. This definition can be translated perfectly when reviewing the careers of some of the Premier League’s less popular stars. Too often are genuine talents stuck in a contractual rut, with no obvious escape. The capacity of squads at Premier League clubs is understandably vast, which means that some quality footballers are required to stay sidelined for long periods of the domestic season. However, with a lack of playing time not allowing said players to display their abilities, interested clubs are few and far between. These circumstances mean that many professionals are trapped in limbo, seemingly unable to find their place at any football club in the league.

In this list, all 20 Premier League clubs for this season are represented, indicating the problematic circumstances that befall unfavoured players from all clubs. From players who have failed to make an impact from abroad, to youngsters who simply can not get the playing time that they so desperately require to improve, all facets of player are covered. Check out the 20 listed stars and see the player at your club whose career has fallen into limbo.

Spain make Euro 2012 final

Spain are the first team to make the Euro 2012 final, after they beat Iberian neighbours Portugal on penalties on Wednesday night.

In a tightly-contested and close game, neither side could break the deadlock in 120 minutes of play, and the match was decided from 12 yards.

After Xabi Alonso and Joao Moutinho had both missed their side’s first effort, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Pepe and Nani all scored, before Portuguese defender Bruno Alves saw his effort reverberate off the crossbar.

Cesc Fabregas stepped up to convert the crucial penalty, setting up a final against either Germany or Italy, and states that he asked to take the decisive fifth spot-kick.

“I had intuition and wanted the fifth penalty,” Sky Sports report him as saying.

“I told Toni Grande [Spanish assistant] I thought I could repeat that great moment.

“They told me initially to take the second one but I said no give me the fifth as I had this premonition.

“I played awful but the team has worked a lot and had the desire. I regret telling my family not to come. I’m very excited.

Chelsea must prove that it has all counted for nothing

Using a team’s pre-season form as gauge for the forthcoming season’s prospects is usually a pretty foolish thing to do. Time and time again we’ve been duped by clubs destroying all before them, only to falter as soon as the expectation kicks in. But whilst pre-season is most prominently a time for tweaking and conditioning, equally, you don’t want to go into the season on the back of several defeats.

And unfortunately for Roberto di Matteo’s Chelsea, that’s exactly what has happened.  The Blues go into this Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester City on the back of three straight defeats to the MLS All-Stars, AC Milan and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Furthermore, after shelling out hefty fees for a variety of attacking talent in Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Oscar, it’s been at the back where Chelsea have looked like needing investment, having shipped in ten goals in their last five fixtures. It might be too early to say that Roberto Di Matteo’s honeymoon period is over, but at this rate, he might not even have one.

But you get the feeling that Chelsea could do with a decent performance against City this Sunday. The Community Shield isn’t necessarily an accurate Premier League barometer, but it will give us a good idea as to what sort of level Chelsea are competing at. It’s always played with the gusto of a Premier League encounter and supporters’ hopes are that Di Matteo’s men will be completing on a similar plateau as Mancini’s men next term.

One man who isn’t worrying too much is Frank Lampard and after missing the European Championships, the midfielder will be eager to get the Blues off to a flying start. He’s been there and done it and he isn’t wild pre-season assumptions aren’t something he’s willing to entertain.

Speaking about Chelsea’s pre-season blues, Lampard said:

“I’ve been in good pre-seasons which then haven’t panned out so well in the season, and been in ones that have been the other way round as well.

“It is very important we don’t make a big deal of this. We need to pick up on certain things that haven’t gone so well and work hard in training.

“The new signings have given us a nice feel and maybe we needed that to an extent – some fresh, young faces. But it’s very important we get the mix right between them and the experienced players.”

He’s been a part of far too many campaigns to get involved with the sort of stirring that’s currently going on, although Lampard was staunch in his admittance that are improvements to be made at Stamford Bridge. The performance at Brighton, in particular, will have been of some real cause for concern to supporters.

Chelsea fielded a very strong team at the Amex last week and put in a really poor performance as goals from Vicente, Ashley Barnes and Andrew Crofts secured victory for ex-Chelsea man Gus Poyet’s team. Top flight teams slumping to defeat against inferior opposition in pre-season is hardly something new, but the manner in which Chelsea did it didn’t leave too much room for optimism. Despite going close on several occasions, the Blues defended poorly throughout and old problems don’t seem to have gone away. Fernando Torres continued to look like a lost figure and the team lacked cohesion.

It’s easy to get too carried away and there from one game that could well have been a simple one off. And there were positives to be taken, too. Eden Hazard has looked lively throughout pre-season and to reference the Brighton game again, he was arguably Chelsea’s best player. Cohesion with their new attacking talent will take time to settle and Oscar is yet to even kick a ball in anger for Chelsea. There is plenty to be optimistic about.

But the truth is that they’re going to have to show a lot more against City this Sunday to suggest they are capable of really kicking on next season. Roberto Mancini’s men will be a hell of a lot more ruthless to the sort of discrepancies Di Matteo’s men have been showing in pre-season and the last thing they need is walloping in the Community Shield. You can argue whether a win in what is very much a ceremonial match, can give you that much momentum. But there’s no arguing about the effect of a serious defeat.

The pressure is already on Roberto Di Matteo to some degree. The whispers of form and performance are a by-product of something that the Italian has yet to really deal with during his Chelsea reign, and that is expectation. No one can take away his achievements of last season, but he wasn’t expected to succeed. The pressure was off and with nothing to loose, they had everything to gain. And gain it they did.

Although the best part of £70million has already been pumped back into this Chelsea team and with more arrivals set to come before the transfer window shuts, the expectation level will be cranked up a little further.

Olivier Giroud pleads for patience

Following a stalemate with Sunderland at the Emirates on Saturday, new Arsenal signing Olivier Giroud has pleaded for patience from Arsenal fans as he attempts to fill the void left by Robin Van Persie’s switch to Manchester United.

Giroud admitted the Gunners lacked a cutting edge in attack, but remained confident he can make an impact at the Emirates. He told Sky Sports “This could have been the dream start, but in Montpellier, I did not score for my first game, so I am not worried. Here, I will have plenty of chances and I will score.” His 21 goals helped Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title last season, and the 25-year-old may have missed the best chance of the game when he fired wide when through on goal late on, but the French international was quick to remind fans that Van Persie also took time to settle. He continued: “Last season was wonderful here for Robin, but before that, he took time to settle. I am just asking people to be a little patient with me.”

Arsenal face two tough away fixtures over the next few weeks, travelling to the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke on the 26th August and then making the trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on the 2nd September. Giroud has stated that he is confident he can make a difference during these tough matches: “I know Arsenal is a great club and needs a striker ready and efficient quickly. I need games to get confidence, and it is up to me to succeed.”

Football News – M’Bengue confirms Arsenal interest, West Ham eye 4th bid & much more…

Robin van Persie says that he has joined Manchester United to ‘achieve greatness’ and believes he can fulfil all his personal ambitions at Old Trafford. The Dutch striker wants to win titles and Champions Leagues, something he was unable to achieve during his years at Arsenal. Van Persie said he listened to the boy inside him that was screaming Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the signing and believes his arrival will bring some much needed maturity to his United team. The Dutchman marks a change in transfer policy in recent years, where Fergie has moved for proven quality, rather than just potential.

Elsewhere in the news Arsene Wenger suggests that new signings maybe forthcoming at the Emirates; Di Matteo says he will use Juan Mata sparingly, while Roberto Mancini brushes off a frustrating week at Manchester City.
