Nat Sciver has withdrawn from England’s upcoming T20I and ODI series at home against India to focus on her mental health and wellbeing. The ECB announced late on Thursday that allrounder Sciver, who was standing in as captain for Heather Knight, who had a hip surgery and was recovering, had left the team’s camp in Durham to return home.Amy Jones was appointed captain for the three-match T20I series, starting in Durham on Saturday, with a replacement to be called up ahead of the second match in Derby on Tuesday.”I’ve played a lot of cricket over the last nine months and I am very emotionally fatigued,” Sciver said. “Elite sport demands a lot and for the moment I’m not able to perform without compromising my own wellbeing, so I need to take some time away from cricket in order to focus on myself. It’s the right decision for me and it’s the right decision for the team.”Sciver’s absence came after her wife, Katherine Brunt, was left out of the squad for the T20I leg of India’s tour, with Lisa Keightley saying Brunt would “rest across both the T20 and ODI series… with a view to maximising her mental and physical recovery off the back of what has been an intense year so far”.Related

Better than Solanke: Spurs lining up late swoop for "underrated" PL star

It’s been a draining season for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s side came into the campaign hopeful of doing one better than their fifth-place finish last year and qualifying for the Champions League, yet as things stand, they have lost more Premier League games than they’ve won and sit nearer the relegation zone than the top four places.

Now, while a significant reason for their poor results can be attributed to questionable tactics from the manager, the North Londoners have also been utterly ravaged by injuries.

The Australian hasn’t been able to field his first-choice backline for almost the entire campaign, and now he’s set to be without club-record signing Dominic Solanke for at least six weeks.

Fortunately, recent reports have touted another Premier League poacher for a move to N17 this month, a forward who might actually be better than the injured Spurs ace.

Tottenham target Premier League striker

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are intent on adding a new striker to the squad this month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

One of the players they are keen on is Brentford star Yoane Wissa, although they are not the only ones, with Nottingham Forest and Arsenal also credited with interest in reports from earlier this month.

The story does not reveal how much the 28-year-old sharpshooter might cost to get out of West London this month, but as his £25k-per-week contract is set to expire next summer, there’s a chance that said price won’t be too exorbitant.

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line for Spurs, but given Wissa’s incredible form, it’s one well worth pursuing, especially as he might even be better than Solanke.

How Wissa compares with Solanke

So, if Spurs were to get ahead of the competition, pull the trigger, and bring Wissa to the club this month, he’d be the perfect player to step in for Solanke while he’s out injured.

However, who will get the nod to start once the Englishman returns to the fold, and who will be the long-term first choice?

Well, a way to work that out is by simply comparing their form this season, although in doing that, it’s the Brentford ace who comes out on top.

For example, in just 23 appearances this season, totalling 1639 minutes, the “massively underrated” forward, as dubbed by football analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 12 goals and provided two assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.64 games, or every 117.07 minutes.

In contrast, the former Bournemouth star has scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 29 appearances, totalling 2248 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.70 games, or every 132.23 minutes.

Moreover, when we compare their relevant underlying numbers, the Congolese international once again comes out on top.

For example, the 28-year-old emerges victorious in most metrics, including, but not limited to, expected and actual non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive carries, shots and shots on target, passing accuracy, key passes, shot-creating actions and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, it does appear as if Wissa is currently the more dangerous striker out of the pair, and the fact he is playing this well for a team outside of the traditional ‘big six’ makes it all the more impressive.

Therefore, Spurs should do all they can to bring him to N17 this month, as not only could he cover for Solanke, but he might even surpass him.

Man Utd now join race for Amorim’s third signing after Dorgu and Heaven

After confirming the arrivals of Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu from Arsenal and Lecce respectively, Manchester United have now reportedly joined the race to land Ruben Amorim’s next signing.

Man Utd transfer news

After struggling in his first 13 games in charge, Amorim will be desperate for Dorgu to particulalry hit the ground running in a Manchester United shirt and provide a solution to their wingback problems at long last. Heaven, meanwhile, has arrived at the Red Devils as one for the future and a player who they will hope to see provide Arsenal with one of their most frustrating regrets.

Speaking to the Manchester United website for the first time after putting pen to paper, Dorgu said: “I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player; this is a very special day for my whole family.

“I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim; his vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions.”

Man United could look to strengthen in midfield late on

ByJoe Nuttall Feb 3, 2025

Both Dorgu and Heaven may yet be the first of many arrivals under Amorim at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils already setting their sights on the summer transfer window. According to reports in Spain, INEOS have now joined the race to sign Paulo Dybala as Amorim’s next Manchester United arrival.

The AS Roma star has just over a year remaining on his current deal, but United could yet make an early summer swoop and sign an attacking midfielder who is arguably ready-made for Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. A World Cup winner with Argentina, Dybala would certainly steal plenty of headlines.

"Gem" Dybala would perfectly suit Amorim's system

As talented a manager as Amorim is, it’s been clear throughout his Manchester United reign that his new side simply does not currently suit what has been a complex system. Far too often, the former Sporting boss has been forced to use square pegs in round holes at both wingback and in the two attacking midfield roles, but both the current window and the summer should help solve those problems.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

Already, the young manager has been handed Dorgu to at least ease his wingback concerns. Now, when the summer arrives, Dybala could follow suit and provide him with an ideal attacking midfield option.

Described as a “gem” by former Roma striker Roberto Pruzzo, Dybala could yet tick the Premier League and Manchester United off his list of impressive clubs after Juventus and Roma.

Whilst there may be concerns about his age at 31 years old, Manchester United undoubtedly need players capable of stealing the spotlight sooner rather than later under Amorim.

Jaiswal hits double-century, West Zone's lead grows

Opener attacks Sai Kishore and K Gowtham to put South Zone under pressure on day three in Coimbatore

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a double-hundred in just about two-and-half sessions as West Zone took control, despite South’s 57-run first-innings lead on the third day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore. At the end of third day’s play, West Zone were 376 for 3, courtesy Jaiswal’s unbeaten 209 off 244 balls that included 23 fours and three sixes.West now have a lead of 319 and even if they declare at lunch on day four, they will have five sessions to force an outright victory although the track is getting easier for batting with no considerable wear and tear. For South, it will be about batting out the fourth innings and winning the trophy by virtue of first-innings lead.Jaiswal shared 169-run third-wicket stand with Shreyas Iyer (71) and then put on an unbroken 58-run stand for the fourth wicket with Sarfaraz Khan (30*).It was a day that will be best remembered for the duel between two powerhouse performers in this year’s domestic cricket – left-handed opener Jaiswal and left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore. After Jaiswal had failed in the first innings, he showed more positive intent in the second after South were dismissed for 327, with an addition of only nine runs to their overnight score of 318 for 7.Once West came out, Jaiswal was severe on South pacers Basil Thampi (0 for 67 in 9 overs) and CV Stephen (0 for 27 in 6 overs) as he and Priyank Panchal (40) added 110 runs at little under five per over for the opening stand.South captain Hanuma Vihari missed the trick when he introduced Sai Kishore (27-5-100-2) only as second change. Panchal was caught off Sai Kishore’s bowling and Ajinkya Rahane was then trapped leg before by the offspinner K Gowtham (33-1-139-1).But South’s joy was short-lived as Jaiswal started using his feet to good effect. The two spinners went for a combined 239 runs in 60 overs.Jaiswal got good support from Iyer, who hit four fours and two sixes before getting dismissed while going for a glory shot off Sai Kishore’s bowling. Having missed a half-century in the first innings, Iyer didn’t show enough patience in the second to score a hundredJaiswal hit Gowtham with the turn for a six and didn’t let Sai Kishore settle into one line as he repeatedly came down the track to disturb his rhythm. He also had a six off seamer Stephen’s bowling. There were many boundaries between cover and extra-cover region and one such shot off Gowtham brought up his double-hundred. Jaiswal let out a war cry and got a standing ovation from the West dressing room.

Hayden: 'Australian team has some thinking to do' after T20 World Cup exit

The former opener said that some tough selections call will need to be made

Australia’s selectors will need to look ahead•Getty Images

Matthew Hayden has urged Australia’s selectors to be ruthless as they build towards future World Cups following the team’s early exit for the T20 event on home soil. There is expected to be a significant turnover in players for the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA, but before that, there is the ODI World Cup in India next October. The selectors have taken the first step towards that tournament by naming a full-strength squad to face England later this month with Travis Head given the chance to cement a position as Aaron Finch’s replacement at the top of the order.Only one change was made from the squad that won the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE with Tim David replacing Mitchell Swepson although Cameron Green later came in for the injured Josh Inglis. Finch has said he won’t make an immediate call on his future but is not expected to feature in the 2024 edition while Matthew Wade is unlikely to feature. Steven Smith’s position will also be up for debate while there may be a restructuring of the bowling attack away from the all-format quicks.Related

Finch to play BBL before making call on international future

Hayden, speaking in his capacity as Pakistan’s team mentor, drew comparisons from his playing days when the selectors made bold calls to rebuild teams with an eye on future World Cups.”The Australian team has some thinking to do. There has to be some freshness,” Hayden said. “And I think one of the great strengths of Australian cricket has been its ability to be able to recognise when to make that gear change into a different playing roster. I think full credit and respect has to go to the players that played this tournament, [they] certainly deserve to be there.”A little bit like Mark Waugh giving away to someone like myself after World Cup campaigns, it’s always been quite ruthless preparing for the next World Cup and they seemingly come around more often than not.”Just 12 months ago, we were sitting here talking about the T20 champions and that was Australia…so the tournaments are coming around quick and fast. But certainly, from an Australian cricket point of view, there has to be planning heading towards World Cups. They’re the premium events. They’re the events that everyone across the world plans for, and Australia, unfortunately, just didn’t get it right.”Hayden termed the decision to leave out Mitchell Starc for the Afghanistan match as “really significant.” At the same time, national selector George Bailey attempted to further explain the move saying it came about because Cameron Green, who had replaced the injured Finch, gave Australia another middle-overs option and they wanted to strengthen the death bowling.”Every time an Australian team goes into a major series or tournament … the expectations are very high,” Bailey said. “We’re disappointed we’re not taking part from this point on in the semis. Specifically to Starcy…it was a tactical decision, it was a match-up decision. People can make of that what they will. And they are.”However, Bailey agreed that Australia’s tournament had been left with too much catching up to do after the opening 89-run defeat against New Zealand at the SCG. Daniel Vettori, the assistant coach, has since suggested that it would have been a wiser approach from the batters to minimise the margin of defeat when victory was out of the question.”To get behind the net run rate as far as we did, it meant a lot of things were probably out of our control,” Bailey said. “Every game post that, you provide opportunities to try and chase some of that net run rate back, but you have to give credit to other teams as well. That’s where it went wrong, that first game, to be beaten so comprehensively. You’d like to think that the batting line-up should be able to find its way to 140-150 then you are probably having a different conversation.”

Everton 2-2 Liverpool player ratings as Tarkowski snatches dramatic point

Everton and James Tarkowski made it a Goodison goodbye to remember in an affair full of drama as he slammed home at the death to snatch a point and dent what has seemed an inevitable Liverpool title charge.

Everton player ratings Jordan Pickford – 6

Although the England number one had little to do, it was a frustrating evening for Jordan Pickford who parried Curtis Jones’ effort into the path of Salah as Liverpool found what they believed to be the winner.

Jake O'Brien – 8

One of O’Brien’s best performances in an Everton shirt as he continues to make up for a slow start in a rejuvenated run under David Moyes, he was unfortunate not to end the game with three points.

James Tarkowski – 8

Dominant up against Luis Diaz and then against Darwin Nunez, Tarkowski enjoyed an evening to savour, equalising with a thumping finish at the death to send Goodison Park into bedlam.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 7.5

Just like his centre-back partner, Branthwaite enjoyed a fine evening, and continues to rediscover last season’s form as he made what seemed like a million clearances.

Vitaliy Mykolenko – 5.5

Back from injury, the Ukraine endured a quiet evening and summed that up with a late cross into the stands just when Everton needed a pinpoint delivery.

James Garner – 6

Although not as prominent as his teammates, Garner still managed to push his side onto the front foot in what could have resulted in victory on another day.

Idrissa Gueye – 7.5

Among those who deserved three points at Goodison Park, Idrissa Gueye took control in the middle of the park in a scrappy affair, breaking up play throughout.

Jesper Lindstrom – 6

Did well to keep Andrew Robertson busy and push the Liverpool frontline into their defensive half, albeit whilst failing to make his mark on the scoresheet.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 7

Moving up next to Beto at times, Doucoure handed Virgil van Dijk a rare uncomfortable game, but loses marks for heading a crucial chance wide of the mark. Sent off after the full-time whistle to add to the drama.

Iliman Ndiaye – 6

Earning the free-kick which led to Beto’s opening strike, Ndiaye left his mark before limping off in tears midway through the half. Everton will certainly be hoping for a swift return.

Beto – 9

One of the best games that he has enjoyed at Goodison Park, Beto handed Ibrahima Konate a nightmare at times in a true derby battle, whilst also netting his third goal in two league games.

Substitutes: Jack Harrison, Carlos Alcaraz, Tim Iroegnunam

Liverpool player ratings Alisson – 7

The Brazilian would have been left angered by his side’s lack of sharpness for Beto’s goal, but otherwise enjoyed a quiet game on the shot-stopping front.

Conor Bradley – 6

In a game full of angst, Conor Bradley was among several who received a booking from Michael Oliver, before he tested the referee’s patience with one foul too many for Arne Slot, who hooked the right-back on the hour mark.

Ibrahima Konate – 6.5

Losing a crucial aerial battle in the dying embers, Konate will be desperate to move on from what was a difficult evening at times up against Beto.

Virgil van Dijk – 7.5

Unusually scrappy by his standards and forced to shift out of first gear by a resilient Beto and Doucoure, but still mopped up with aplomb several times.

Andrew Robertson – 6

Again Liverpool’s achilles heel at times, Robertson – like many – failed to escape Oliver’s book and faced the same fate as Bradley when Slot introduced Kostas Tsimikas.

Ryan Gravenberch – 6.5

By his standards, the Dutchman struggled to take control of proceedings and instead found himself sucked into a scrappy affair before Slot brought his game to an end on the hour mark.

Alexis Mac Allister – 7

Found an excellent equaliser by heading home despite his unlikely aerial prowess. Mac Allister is creating a habit of enjoying important moments.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 6.5

Entering the derby in fine form, Szoboszlai struggled to gain control at times up against a frantic Everton midfield. Tested Pickford with a fine effort in the first half.

Mohamed Salah – 8

For a moment, it looked as though the Egyptian King was set to bow out at Goodison Park with one last royal goodbye, only for Tarkowski to spoil his moment.

Luis Diaz – 4

Continuing Liverpool’s number nine problem, Diaz struggled to get into the game and continued to look like a player shoehorned out of position.

Cody Gakpo – 6

Unusually quiet despite recent form, Gakpo followed the initial trend of a frustrating night for Liverpool’s frontline before being replaced by Darwin Nunez.
