India brush aside Sri Lanka despite Dimuth Karunaratne's resistance

R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah shared seven between them to wrap up a dominant series sweep

For 173 balls, Dimuth Karunaratne defied India. In constructing a fine 14th Test century, he showed his team-mates hitting your way out of trouble wasn’t the only way to succeed on a tough Bengaluru track that offered sharp turn and variable bounce. Then he got a pearl from Jasprit Bumrah that breached his defences.Even someone as well set as he was couldn’t quite judge the extent of late inward movement on that full delivery, and that was that for Sri Lanka. In the face of a relentless attack, the others proved to be sitting ducks as their high-risk, high-returns strategy fell flat.India wrapped up an emphatic 2-0 series win inside two sessions on the third day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The series lasted all of six days, with Sri Lanka’s 208 all out in their final innings being their highest total of the lot.The innings promised a lot more, especially after Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis started the day positively. While Mendis’s aggression wasn’t much of a surprise, Karunaratne tried to take a leaf out of Shreyas Iyer’s book early in the day, repeatedly stepping out to negate Jadeja from the rough. In the very first over, he also attempted an uncharacteristic reverse sweep. This wasn’t the stonewaller Karunaratne, who has methodically constructed knocks to be the highest run-getter among openers since 2018. This was Karunaratne trying to throw the oppositions spinners off their settings in the face of a challenging surface. This approach rubbed off on Mendis too, as he stepped out and took R Ashwin on at the other end. The first eight overs of the day produced 42, and suddenly India were searching for answers, even if they knew one wicket could open the doors. In this period, what worked for Sri Lanka was their clarity in committing themselves fully forward or going right back to play the ball. The odd ball scooting low or jumping from the rough didn’t seem to bother them much. Mendis raised his 12th half-century off just 57 balls.R Ashwin had Dhananjaya de Silva caught by Hanuma Vihari at short leg to go past Dale Steyn on the most-Test-wickets chart•BCCI

But the party didn’t last long as he ran down the pitch, only to be deceived by Ashwin’s guile. Stepping out to smother the spin, he was done in by the skid off the pitch as Rishabh Pant effected an excellent stumping. This helped Ashwin equal Dale Steyn’s tally of 439 Test wickets, a day after he went past Kapil Dev’s tally of 434.On a surface that turns big, the most dangerous delivery can often be the one that doesn’t turn. Angelo Mathews found out as much the hard way, stabbing at a Jadeja delivery outside the line only for the ball to sneak through and flatten the stumps. From there on, Sri Lanka were in free fall.Dhanajaya de Silva was out to sharp turn as he lobbed a catch to Hanuma Vihari at short leg as Ashwin went past Steyn. Niroshan Dickwella survived a DRS call for caught behind, but his tendency to run down the pitch and play big shots cost him as he was done in by Axar Patel’s flatter trajectory to be stumped. As all this played out at one end, Karunaratne shelved his enterprising avatar and brought out the hard grind, also to good effect. He played with soft hands, played with his bat close to the body and ensured he didn’t let the spinners dictate terms. The same could hardly be said about the rest of the line-up. Charith Asalanka was the next to go as he lobbed a simple catch to backward short leg.As Karunaratne approached his century, he started to take chances as he was running out of partners. Once into the nineties, he reverse swept for two runs, then brought out a conventional sweep in front of square for four and then, having got to 99 via three singles, brought out a neat flick to the backward-square-leg fence off Bumrah to reach his hundred. No sooner had he celebrated getting to the landmark in what was a terrific knock, did Bumrah bounce back to get him with that magic ball. On “tail dismantle” mode, Bumrah took one more – Suranga Lakmal’s last innings in Test cricket ending with his stumps disturbed – to finish with a match haul of eight. The tame end wasn’t entirely unexpected, but Sri Lanka would be the first to admit they ought to have applied themselves better. This was among the easier series wins for India at home lately and, while clinically dismantling their opponents, they’d ticked plenty of boxes to end a dominant home season on a high. The season had begun with New Zealand being handed defeat across formats, and ended with Sri Lanka being given the same treatment, West Indies having fared no better in between.

Crystal Palace scouts spot "versatile" winger as perfect Olise replacement

Crystal Palace scouts have found the club a new winger who fits exactly what they’re looking for, according to a new report from Football Insider.

Crystal Palace transfer news

Though a couple of decent results on the bounce have lifted spirits at Selhurst Park, January reinforcements are a must if Crystal Palace are to avoid relegation come the end of the season. Ahead of the New Year, Oliver Glasner’s side have already been linked with a number of players, including Millwall midfielder Romaine Esse and Manchester City’s James McAtee, as they search for some extra attacking impetus after losing Michael Olise in the summer.

Perhaps most notably, they are, according to Graeme Bailey, eyeing a raid on Ligue 1 side Lyon for trio Rayan Cherki, Ernest Nuamah, and Sael Kumbedi.

Crystal Palace now want to use Textor link to complete 3-man transfer raid

The Eagles are eyeing an ambitious swoop.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 13, 2024

Lyon are currently in a financial crisis and will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the season if they do not improve their situation. To do that, the seven-time French champions are likely to have to sell several players after the New Year, and Palace want to take advantage by using their link with John Textor, who has a stake in both clubs, claims Bailey.

Cherki, specifically, has been one of Lyon’s standout players this season, managing five goals and six assists in 16 games for the French side. In the past, he’s been compared to Chelsea and Belgium legend Eden Hazard.

Palace want South American star

According to Football Insider, another player purportedly on Palace’s radar ahead of January is Fluminense winger Jhon Arias. The publication claims that the Eagles’ scouts are keeping close tabs on the 27-year-old, who hit 15 goals and notched eight assists in 53 games across all competitions last season.

Arias plays primarily on the right flank, but is also capable of playing on the left, as well as through the middle. Football Insider claims the Colombian, who has been capped 27 times by his country, “fits the bill” perfectly for Palace, with the club on the lookout for a “versatile forward who can operate wide”.

Arias, who in Brazil is known as “Little Engine,” helped Fluminense lift the Copa Libertadores trophy in 2023. Speaking about the winger earlier this year, Fluminense legend Gum said: “Arias has been performing exceptionally well for some time now; he is the escape valve, a standout player. He frequently steps up.”

He added: “For quite a while now, he has been one of the most important players for Fluminense. Every player has their importance, but he brings something unique as he’s been scoring goals consistently and resolving matches.”

Meanwhile, South American football expert Tim Vikcery has described him to talkSPORT, per Rangers News, as “Mr. Perpetual Motion”.

“He’s dynamic, he can work all over the field and he’s very, very versatile. For me, he’s probably been the best player in the Fluminense side,” said Vickery.

Nortje cleared of 'serious injury', to continue rehab with Delhi Capitals

Franchise physio Patrick Farhart to determine, after conducting fresh tests, when the quick can return to bowling competitively

Delhi Capitals’ South African quick Anrich Nortje has been cleared of “any serious injury”. Also, the stress fracture that was understood to be the reason for him being sidelined for the last six months, has been ruled out, clearing the way for him to join Capitals at the IPL.The update has come from CSA chief medical officer Shuaib Manjra, who confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Nortje would now complete his rehab during the IPL. “We did a range of Tests on Anrich and ruled out any serious injury,” Manjra said on Saturday. “We felt safe enough to have Anrich do his rehab in India and his return to play in India. We have ruled out the stress fracture of the back.”Nortje, who last played competitively at the T20 World Cup last November, was retained by the Capitals, and joined the franchise bubble in Mumbai earlier this week after Capitals physiotherapist Patrick Farhart flew to South Africa to conduct his own assessment. Farhart, an experienced and well-respected physio, is understood to have been confident about Nortje’s recovery and him being able to take part in IPL at some stage. Farhart will determine when that would be, once he has conducted fresh fitness tests on Nortje.Related

Ricky Ponting: Rishabh Pant's journey as captain could be like Rohit Sharma's

Capitals have solid first XI but player availability a concern

What a ten-team, four-venue IPL might look like

The injury itself has intrigued CSA. Initially, it was identified as a “persistent hip injury”, which ruled him out of the home series against India in December-January. Nortje also did not travel to New Zealand for the two-match Test series, and was then ruled out of the ongoing home series against Bangladesh. On March 8, when the South Africa ODI squad for the Bangladesh series was announced, Victor Mpitsang, CSA’s chief selector, had said that it might be “difficult” for Nortje to take part in the IPL, and there was no “time frame” for his recovery. At the time, Manjra had also noted that it was “frustrating” because Nortje was facing discomfort in his loading and the medical team had “identified three different problems between back and hip and we don’t know which is primary”.Why then did CSA allow Nortje to travel to IPL, when his rehab had not concluded? And what about the risk of the injury recurring considering he has not bowled in competitive cricket for six months?Manjra allayed the fears. “Before he left SA he was beginning to bowl. We felt comfortable sending him to India,” he said.Importantly, CSA has the right to recall Nortje if they deem it necessary for his long-term fitness. However, at the moment, they have decided to join hands with Capitals and give Nortje a chance to get back to bowling normally.

Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium set to be rechristened with new sponsor's name

Reasons behind the impending renaming are purely financial rather than political

The PCB is set to change the name of Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium, nearly 50 years after it was named in honour of former Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi. The reason, however, is not political. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja told ESPNcricinfo that the board was in advanced negotiations with a number of sponsors, one of which would win the right to have the stadium renamed after it.While there have been several moves in the past to change the name of the stadium, those were for political reasons. In February 2013, not long after Gaddafi’s death, the Punjab Olympic Association asked the provincial chief minister to rename the stadium in keeping with increasing public opinion against the former Libyan leader. This time, though, it’s purely financial. And the National Stadium in Karachi, as well as other major cricket stadia around the country, might also be renamed once sponsors are lined up.”We acquired the services of YouGov to estimate the brand worth of our stadia, and how much sponsorship deals would be worth,” Ramiz said. “That’s not just true of the Gaddafi Stadium, but also the NSK and others. We’ve been working towards this for a while, and the response from sponsors has been satisfactory. Once we finalise a deal [for Lahore], the name Gaddafi will go completely, with a sponsor’s name replacing it.”The change in name, if and when it happens, will also mean the end for one of the quirkiest venue names in the cricket world. The stadium was originally named Lahore Stadium when it was built in 1959. But in 1974, when Gaddafi visited Lahore, he gave a speech in favour of Pakistan’s right to pursue nuclear weapons at the Organisation of Islamic Conference. It led to the then prime minister of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, naming Pakistan’s premier cricket stadium after the Libyan leader.Over time, the stadium’s name has evolved beyond the name of the politician that inspired it, and associations between the stadium and the president have long since been decoupled. The name is now seen more as a snapshot in time of the political climate in Pakistan of the 1970s rather than an endorsement for any particular kind of foreign policy. When Gaddafi was ousted from power, there were strong suggestions Pakistan cricket might look to distance its most famous stadium from him, but that movement gradually fell away.

Spurs star who was "more skilled than Bale" is now struggling in Greece

They might not have been the most successful team over the last 15 years, but Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with some ridiculously talented footballers.

For example, before his move to Bayern Munich, Harry Kane was undoubtedly the best striker in the Premier League and formed one of the best-attacking partnerships ever alongside Son Heung-min.

However, years before those two became the superstars they are, another Spurs attacker was the envy of the footballing world: Gareth Bale.

The Welsh legend was a force of nature for the Lilywhites and eventually netted the team a world record £85m, which was infamously spent on seven somewhat underwhelming signings, including one player who was supposedly more skilful than the Champions League winner, but is now struggling in the Greek Super League.

Spurs' not so magnificent seven

Yes, with the money made on Bale’s sale, Daniel Levy and Co opted to splash the cash on seven new signings that summer, and while some of them panned out okay, most did not.

Roberto Soldado

For example, while Roberto Soldado and Paulinho arrived with plenty of hype, the former due to his incredible goal record in Spain and the latter because of comparisons to Frank Lampard, neither one achieved much of anything at the club.

Likewise, while none of them were dreadful, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches all left the North Londoners within three years, leaving little to no mark on the club whatsoever.

However, while five of the seven arrivals left arguably as flops, there were two who certainly had more of a positive impact.

The first is Christan Eriksen, who was undoubtedly the most successful of the seven and made 305 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 69 goals and providing 88 assists before leaving to join Inter Milan in January 2020.

The final member of the not-so-magnificent seven wasn’t as successful as the Dane, but he remained in North London for longer and certainly made his mark, although comparisons to Bale in the early days look even more ridiculous now that he’s struggling in the Greek Super League.

The former Spurs star struggling in Greece

So, with six of the seven players already covered, it should come as no surprise that the player we are talking about is Erik Lamela.

Erik Lamela

The Argentine ace joined the North Londoners for around £25.8m in late August 2013, and while he wasn’t as game-changing as Eriksen was, he was significantly more impactful than the other five players signed that summer.

In fact, to his credit, the Carapachay-born dynamo was the last man standing from the magnificent seven and ended up making 257 appearances for the club before joining Sevilla as part of a swap deal in July 2021.

In those appearances, the 32-year-old scored 37 goals, provided 44 assists and occasionally showed real glimpses of quality, such as his Puskas-winning goal in the North London Derby.

While these moments helped justify the money spent on him, he could never quite live up to the expectations people had of him when he first arrived in N17, especially after club legend Ossie Ardiles proclaimed that he was “more skilled than Bale.”

Such comments look even more outrageous today, as after three middling seasons at Sevilla, the 25-capped international joined Greek side AEK Athens, and while he’s not been woeful, he hasn’t been great either.

In 13 appearances across all competitions, the former Spurs star has failed to score a single goal and has just three assists to his name, which is not the sort of output you would expect from someone of his ability.

Ultimately, despite being a decent servant to the club, Lamela could never live up to the expectations people had of him at Spurs, and it looks like that may be happening to him again, only this time in Greece.

He's like Palmer: Spurs could sign dream Son replacement for just £25m
