Hosts lit up the final session like the lightning which stopped play early
Andrew Miller17-Dec-2021The message on Adelaide’s scoreboard was unequivocal: “Severe weather approaching. Follow direction from event staff and seek shelter”. And sure enough, England’s beleaguered cricketers were only too willing to hunker down and hope the bad men go away, after a ferocious floodlit examination had ended with their Ashes hopes tumbling down the street like a wheelie-bin in a gale. After five sessions of sedate sparring at the Adelaide Oval, in which Australia’s top-order played within themselves to drag England’s largely toothless right-arm seam attack into their umpteenth spells, the contest was lit up in the final session like the lightning strike behind the bowler’s arm that forced a hasty abandonment, midway through the ninth over of Australia’s new-ball onslaught.By then, both of England’s openers had been prised from the crease – Rory Burns a victim once again of Mitchell Starc’s left-arm wiles, despite being shielded from his first delivery, before Haseeb Hameed flicked the second ball of Michael Neser’s Test career straight to mid-on to cue the most joyous scenes of celebration in the series to date.Joe Root, England’s only source of hope, then edged his second ball short of slip but endured to the early close alongside Dawid Malan, the same sidekick who had briefly inspired thoughts of salvation in that third-wicket stand at the Gabba last week. But with three full days to come, and confidence in England’s camp at rock bottom, it’s going to take something truly phenomenal to pull the team out of this latest tailspin. After resuming on an ominous 221 for 2, Australia’s eventual 473 for 9 declared was a masterclass of targeted acceleration, as a brace of sparky innings from Steven Smith and Alex Carey built on the first-day efforts of David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne – who duly brought up his sixth Test century in the first half-hour then survived England’s second wicket with a no-ball of the series before departing soon afterwards for 103.But it was the twin departures of Smith, lbw for 93, and Carey, caught at short cover on the stroke of tea for 51 – both off the tidy but largely unthreatening James Anderson – that set the stage for a contemptuous finale. With the storm encroaching on the horizon, and the clear ambition of a lengthy stint of bowling under the floodlights, Australia’s lower-order emerged after the interval with licence to plant their collective front dogs and swing for the hills. Starc was the relative anchorman, serving up a run-a-ball 39 not out with a host of long-levered swipes through the line, but it was the debutant Neser who seized the moment with unfettered glee.Mitchell Starc came out swinging•Getty Images
After so many years of waiting on the sidelines as 12th man, Neser wasn’t going to let a further 20 minutes of waiting putting him off his stride. He saw off the first two balls of the resumption with minimal fuss, and then, after picking off a brace of fours to ease into his evening’s work, it was the return of Woakes that truly signalled the cavalry charge.Hard though Woakes had toiled in the opening exchanges of this Test, he had already been identified as England’s weakest link during the latter stages of Smith’s innings, in which he had cracked two fours and a six in the space of three balls – the latter a remarkable heave over midwicket as he knelt into a fractionally short ball outside off to hoist Australia past the 350 mark. And now, as he returned for his 22nd over, Neser was primed to prove that his solitary first-class hundred was no fluke, as he climbed in Woakes’ laboured offerings for a 16-run over including a yawning hack for four through midwicket and the shot of the match to date, a veritable uppercut into the stands at extra cover.Ben Stokes ended his fun on 35 from 24 balls as Stuart Broad back-pedalled at long-off to swallow another thrash through the line, but Starc picked up the cudgels with three meaty fours in the same over, before Jhye Richardson set the seal on a free-wheeling final flourish with a murderous clout for six over midwicket – the most literal declaration of the death overs that Woakes has encountered since the T20 World Cup.One ball later, Richardson scuffed an edge to the keeper and Smith waved them in – but all told, Australia’s Nos. 8 to 10 had racked up 83 runs in their final ten overs, and Woakes’ figures had been vandalised to the tune of 54 runs in his final four overs. The irony is that England’s day had actually begun with relative purpose. With more swing on offer for the second new ball than the first, the seamer’s lengths had been notably fuller from the outset, not least the persevering Ollie Robinson, whose first ball of the day should have had Labuschagne caught-behind for 102, only for replays to show that he had over-stepped.It was another shattering blow to England’s flagging morale – their second no-ball dismissal of the series, to go with a tally of dropped catches than is now into double figures – but with impressive gumption, Robinson dusted himself down and made amends ten balls later, as Labuschagne padded up to a nipbacker to be pinned plumb in front of middle.Worryingly, however, for England’s prospects of achieving even parity in this contest, the middle part of their bowling effort was dominated by the part-time spin of Joe Root, who found purchase from the outset and no little guile, as he showed by bowling Australia’s first-Test centurion Travis Head with a superb sucker-punch, a toss-up above the eyeline that dipped at his feet and straightened into the stumps for 18.At a stroke, Root had become only the tenth visiting spinner to take a wicket at Adelaide since 2010, and of the names above him, only three have more than two scalps. Nathan Lyon, by contrast, has hoovered up 51 wickets at 26.94 in 11 visits, and assuming Australia’s seamers leave him any spoils to get stuck into, he’ll fancy his chances of adding to that tally on this particular surface, and against this particular line-up.When Stokes popped up one over later to bowl the hapless Cameron Green for 2 (taking his Test average to 1.00), England went to lunch, having arguably enjoyed the better of the session with Australia 303 for 5.It was, however, about as relative as such comparisons get, and the manner in which Australia turned up the heat before the close was a far truer reflection of the gulf between the team’s aptitudes, attitudes and applications.
Coventry City seemingly aren’t messing around when it comes to appointing a successor to Mark Robins, with Frank Lampard the main frontrunner to take on the reins at the CBS Arena.
Of course, there are many bumps that can come up when attempting to secure a manager’s signature, with nothing set in stone yet that the former Everton boss will definitely be Robins’ replacement until official confirmation filters through.
There are also alternatives for the Sky Blues, with one left-field choice also on the Championship club’s agenda.
Coventry looking at exciting Lampard alternative
As per journalist Tom Collomosse, Coventry are eyeing up Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala as another face that could take over from the adored figure of Robins, with Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace also on the ever-growing list of alternatives to Lampard.
Stating further that there have been a mammoth 60-70 applicants for the vacant job post, the Imps manager will believe he is a viable option for the Coventry hierarchy to look at, having guided Lincoln to a respectable seven wins from 14 in League One this campaign.
Also formerly on the books of Leeds United as an U21 coach, Coventry will hope – if they can’t get their hands on Lampard – that Skubala is a suitable second choice, with fans at Sincil Bank no doubt gutted if the popular 42-year-old did end up packing his bags for a major move to the West Midlands.
But, it could be a match made in heaven, with Skubala impressing those in the third tier ever since he made a move to Lincoln a reality, as the Championship now calls out to him.
What Skubala could offer Coventry
Skubala was an instant hit at Sincil Bank when he relocated from Leeds last year, taking the Imps on a mightily impressive 16 game unbeaten run between January and April this year, that saw his new side just narrowly miss out on the playoffs.
Now, in fifth spot in the league, the ex-Leeds coach will hope this time around sees his team compete in the playoffs come the end of the long and gruelling regular season, in a league that is being dominated by the might of ex-Premier League clubs such as Birmingham City.

Skubala even took on caretaker duties at Elland Road on one occasion, with his first taste of interim action even seeing the Whites draw 2-2 with Manchester United in a barnstorming contest at Old Trafford.
His Lincoln sides have also been known to operate on the front foot, scoring 73 times across the 39 games he has taken charge of, only leaking 45 in the process.
Whilst Lampard does have an upper-hand on the Lincoln manager when it comes to experience of the second tier, having guided Derby County to a playoff final at the level in 2019, it’s fair to say Skubala is fresher when it comes to his successes in the here and now.
Unfortunately for the frontrunner for the Sky Blues vacancy, his reputation in the managerial game has taken a bruising, having only steered Everton to 12 wins from 44 fixtures at Goodison Park, not far off the number of games Skubala has under his belt now in Lincolnshire.
Lampard does feel like the safer shout as a more household name, but with Skubala also favouring a similar formation to Robins in a 3-1-4-2 set-up, Coventry could fancy going bold as a new era looms on the horizon for the Sky Blues.
Coventry close in on "exceptional" manager who's a dream for Wright
Coventry City could appoint this Mark Robins successor very soon who would be a dream for Haji Wright.

Allrounder has represented South Africa in red and white-ball cricket

George Linde, the South African allrounder, will join Kent on a two-year deal.Linde, 30, has represented South Africa in all formats, taking four wickets on Test debut before recording his Test-best figures of 5-64 against Pakistan last February, the last of his three Test appearances.South Africa’s domestic four-day cricketer of the year for 2021, Linde took 23 wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin at 20.95, and scored 322 runs at 46.00 in five CSA four-day domestic series matches for Cape Cobras. He has also played 100 T20 matches in his career, scoring 904 runs at a strike rate of 138.43 and taking 105 wickets at 22.93, with an economy rate of 7.3.”This is an exciting opportunity for me to play county cricket for the first time in my career,” said Linde, who will be available to play all formats for Kent. “I’m really looking forward to wearing the Kent shirt with pride and to make my own mark on this club’s history.”Paul Downton, Kent’s Director of Cricket, said: “We are delighted to have signed a player of George’s calibre for the coming two seasons.”We have long identified the need for an experienced, high quality spin bowler to balance our side in all formats, and the fact that George is an accomplished left-handed middle-order batter makes his addition to the squad even more exciting.”His first-class record is excellent with 211 wickets at 24.00 and 2287 runs at 30.00 in 58 matches – his white ball performances have also been just as impressive. We believe that George will make us a more competitive side as we aim to compete on all fronts next season.”
No one foresaw this. Even the most optimistic of Liverpool supporters wouldn’t have dreamed up a world where Arne Slot basked in an eight-point lead in the Premier League heading into December.
December 1st marks quite the date: Liverpool host Manchester City in the league as Pep Guardiola seeks to stop the rot that has sent his season into a tailspin.
Early days. Early days. Liverpool are champions elect after climbing back to beat Southampton? More fool the fan who is subscribed to that notion.
There are plenty of twists and turns left as Liverpool move through this crooked season, and a Citizen victory by the River Mersey would change the narrative with the swiftness of a Redmen counter-attack.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot
Liverpool do look good though, it must be said. Even when the parts don’t combine to the most rip-roaring effect, Slot’s squad still find a way. Of course, with Mohamed Salah at the spearhead, such things are child’s play.
Mohamed Salah's talismanic season
Salah’s days on Merseyside might be numbered, but he’s not letting that affect his performances for Liverpool this season. In fact, the Egyptian sensation is supercharged by a sense of urgency that perhaps speaks of a man on borrowed time.
That’s a downcast thought that would be fit for the conditions that Slot’s side faced at the St. Mary’s Stadium. The thing is, though, this is a team with a moveless mindset. Salah’s brace turned the game on its head and Liverpool are now eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.
We’ve met too many false dawns to get excited yet – after all, Manchester City journey to Anfield next weekend. Salah said post-match that “hopefully we can beat City,” and he’s certain to be confident after his performance on the South Coast.
The 32-year-old’s two late goals negated Southampton’s fine work in turning the game on its head, with his effort now leaving him with ten goals and six assists across 12 Premier League matches. Salah’s consistency on English shores is frankly absurd and he is undisputedly one of the finest players to have graced the division.

Salah wasn’t the only one to produce an emphatic display though, with Dominik Szoboszlai opening the scoring and putting in a high-class performance that might just leave him undroppable going forward.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai is now undroppable
Admittedly, Szoboszlai can be frustrating to watch sometimes. Do more, we cry. Please, channel that energy and electricity into something prolific and potent and all the rest.
His “sublime” finish against Southampton, as Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher put it, proved that he can produce those moments of genuine quality to illuminate his name on the big board, but it’s perhaps important to dig deeper into the underlying data and understand that the attacking midfielder is quietly becoming one of Liverpool’s most important players.
Having been benched in two of the previous three top-flight outings, this was a welcome return to form and something that the Hungary captain will feel he can use as a springboard to more positive noise.
Journalist Bence Bocsak hailed the 23-year-old’s “brilliant performance” and rightly so. As per Sofascore, he notably completed 100% (2/2) of his dribbles, made three key passes and won six of his eight contested ground duels.
Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool
That duel success is particularly interesting, a step up from his campaign average of 2.2 per game. It’s the tactical dimension that would speak volumes to Slot, proving to him that Szoboszlai is deserving of an unmoving starting berth in Liverpool’s Premier League line-up.
He also made four tackles, four ball recoveries, and completed all four of his long balls, showcasing a technical range that indeed compelled Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke to fork out £60m for the RB Leipzig talent’s transfer in the dog days of 2023.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle awarded Szoboszlai with an 8/10 match score – the same as Salah – and wrote: ‘Led the Liverpool press, used ball well, had some shots and curled in a fine finish for the opening goal. Energy and work-rate made such a difference.’
It’s important to note that Szoboszlai’s athleticism could be a decisive factor against Guardiola’s beleaguered outfit next week, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Dejan Kulusevski – a player of similarly indefatigable energy and powerful dribbling – running roughshod over the Sky Blues’ defences on Saturday.
The Swede claimed an assist but more importantly, succeeded with all four of his dribbles and won each of his six contested ground duels, as per Sofascore, which pertains to Szoboszlai’s potential continuation of form next weekend given he has the quality, and demonstrated as such against Saints, to adopt that blueprint.
Szoboszlai’s ball-carrying and -playing skills have been discernible from the get-go at Anfield, but fluency in crucial moments has been choppy across the past 15 months.
To be sure, there’s more in the attacking midfielder’s locker, but if he performs as he did against Southampton going forward, there’s no way that Slot will want to demote him to the bench, for his energy and impact on the other forwards is so important.
Salah, for example, is an extraordinary forward, but his life is made easier by Szoboszlai’s movements and they will be called into play once again next.
Liverpool are flying, but there’s so much football still to be played. The quality of a player like Szoboszlai ensures that even when not flourishing, three points can still be secured.

West Ham United have now been offered an ex-Chelsea manager as a potential replacement for Julen Lopetegui, with the Spaniard facing his last chance saloon against Wolves in the Premier League on Monday.
Julen Lopetegui could be fired if West Ham fail to beat Wolves
It has been reported by reliable media sources that Lopetegui has been given one last chance to save his job against Wolves (The Telegraph), with insiders viewing the all-important clash as a “cup final” in terms of the 58-year-old’s future.

A disastrous start to the season for Lopetegui was exacerbated by demoralising defeats to Arsenal and Leicester City last week, which piled even more pressure on the Spaniard, who’s led West Ham to just four league wins so far this season.

Lopetegui has been slammed on various occasions for his tactics, player selection and overall approach to games – with calls to relieve the ex-Spain boss of his duties prevalent long before the last few days.
There have been reports that “several” senior West Ham stars are not behind their manager, and other media sources believe that Lopetegui has frustrated key club figures with last-minute changes to game plans (GiveMeSport).
In response, the Hammers are drawing up contingency plans in case they’re forced to fire their current head coach, with reliable club source ExWHUemployee revealing earlier this week that they’ve held talks with multiple managers already.
Graham Potter, Sergio Conceicao, Kasper Hjulmand, Roger Schmidt, Thomas Frank, Edin Terzic, Massimiliano Allegri and Matthias Jaissle have all been linked with the potentially vacant post this week.
New candidates are emerging on a consistent basis, with former Chelsea, Juventus, Napoli and Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri also in the frame.
West Ham offered ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri to replace Julen Lopetegui
Sources in Italy last month reported that West Ham have been considering Sarri as an option, and French news outlet Foot Mercato now backs this up with a new claim.
Indeed, it is believed West Ham have been “offered” Sarri, with David Sullivan and Tim Steidten apparently open to the possibility of handing him a job back in the Premier League.
Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri
Famed for his brand of “Sarri-ball”, which was successful at Napoli and drew admirers, the tactician boasts a Europa League triumph from his time at Chelsea and a Scudetto from his period in the dugout at Juve.
Called “extraordinary” on a tactical level by his former star midfielder Jorginho, the 65-year-old won Serie A’s Manager of the Year award in 2016/17 and guided Lazio to second place a year before he left the Stadio Olimpico.
Sarri does have major credentials, and if supporters want to see attacking football, he could be a good option considering that the Italian is known for being an offensive-minded coach (The Football Analyst).
