Sherfane Rutherford makes it three wins from three for Patriots

Half-centuries for Mohammad Hafeez and Shimron Hetmyer were not enough for Warriors

Sherfane Rutherford’s second half-century of the CPL season guided St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their third straight victory in a chase that had threatened to get out of hand before a late charge to the line. After an opening stand of 69 in nine overs between Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis, Patriots stalled as they lost 3 for 4 – Imran Tahir removing both openers – and when Rutherford and Dwayne Bravo struggled to score at much more than a run-a-ball the asking rate blew out above 11 an over. However, from needing 45 off 24 balls the game swung in Patriots’ favour when Rutherford was spilled on the rope by Kevin Sinclair with the ball going for six. When the 18th over went for 13 it left 19 needed off the last two with plenty of wickets in hand. The first three balls of the penultimate over threatened a twist when they brought just a single and the wicket of Bravo – taken at long-off against Naveen-ul-Haq – but a wide followed by two more sixes for Rutherford put any doubt to bed before Fabian Allen struck his first delivery for four.Guyana Amazon Warriors’ innings had been based around half-centuries from Mohammad Hafeez and Shimron Hetmyer in a 101-run stand for the second wicket. While Hetmyer scored at a good clip – his 52 taking 35 balls – Hafeez struggled to move through the gears with the pair falling in consecutive deliveries from Paul van Meekeren in the 18th over.It meant that Nicholas Pooran was only able to face nine balls in the innings and overall the last four overs brought an underwhelming 30 runs as van Meekeren, Dominic Drakes and Bravo closed out strongly.

Maresca can make Sancho more unplayable by starting £80k-p/w Chelsea star

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea side have gotten into their stride recently, and things have been starting to click for the Blues. They started the season in the worst possible way, a defeat at the hands of Manchester City, but since then have won three of their last four Premier League games, having also drawn with Crystal Palace.

The West London outfit have had some standout performers along the way. Nicolas Jackson has started the season in fine form, with four goals and two assists in five top-flight games. Cole Palmer has also been superb so far this term, having scored twice and grabbed four assists in five appearances.

One of their summer signings has also started life at Stamford Bridge excellently. That player is Jadon Sancho.

Sancho’s start to his Chelsea career

The former Manchester United winger had plenty of eyes on him when he moved from the Red Devils to the Blues of West London. It is fair to say his time at Old Trafford did not live up to expectations; the former Borussia Dortmund man left with 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for the club.

Jadon Sancho

However, all of that seems to be in the past now, and Sancho is thriving, in an optimal environment with a coach who ensures the winger feels “love”, as the Italian put it, following the winger’s debut against Bournemouth.

So far, the England international has made just two appearances for the Blues, and he already has two assists to his name. He registered a match-winning assist on debut against the Cherries for Christopher Nkunku and created Jackson’s first goal against West Ham last weekend.

The 24-year-old has been superb in ideal conditions, both on and off the pitch. Unlike his time at United, Sancho has had his skillset maximised by the coach, creating lots of overlapping and underlapping runs and quick combination play, as his assist at the Vitality Stadium showed.

Maresca may have another Blues player who could further enhance Sancho’s output and could well decide to unleash him against Brighton this afternoon, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

How Dewsbury-Hall can help maximise Sancho

English midfielder Dewsbury-Hall signed for Chelsea from 2023/24 Championship winners Leicester City. As managers often do, he was the player whom Maresca chose to take with him from the Foxes, for a fee of just £30m, and is now earning £80k-per-week, according to Capology.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

That certainly seemed like a superb deal on the face of things, given the Leicester academy graduate was one of the Championship’s best players last term. He scored 12 goals and grabbed 14 assists in 44 games in England’s second tier.

The former Luton Town loanee ranked highly in several creative metrics for the Foxes last term, and his underlying statistics further suggested that he was one of the better players in the Championship, as per FBref.

Indeed, he could form a superb partnership with Sancho, given the fact Maresca used him as a mezzala-type midfielder last term for the Foxes, operating in the half-space on the left-hand side, similar areas to where Sancho players his best football. The fluidity in their rotations and sharp combination play could elevate Chelsea even more, after a good start to the season.

With the Leicester academy graduate making those underlapping runs to help facilitate Sancho, we could see a superb partnership form. Given the Chelsea number 22’s superb creative final third numbers, both he and the winger could profit and create far more chances for the Blues.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Chelsea

So far, Dewsbury-Hall is yet to show his best form in a Chelsea shirt. He has played just three times in the Premier League, and is yet to start a game.

However, he is a player Maresca certainly trusts, and if he is unleashed against Brighton – perhaps ahead of Enzo Fernandez – could begin the start of a special partnership between himself and Sancho.

Maresca could now drop Madueke and unleash Chelsea's "monster" instead

Maresca must make a tough decision to rejig Chelsea’s attack…

Arsenal star just dropped an "outstanding" 9/10 display for his country

Arsenal headed into the international break rather full of dread after what happened during the last pause for international fixtures.

Martin Odegaard sustained what was a significant ligament injury to his ankle and we have not seen him since. It’s unlikely we see him before the next international break either.

It was a game between Norway and Austria where the Gunners skipper hobbled off and we’re seeing yet more injuries now.

Before the latest round of fixtures even commenced Kai Havertz withdrew from his duties with Germany due to a knock and Thomas Partey also withdrew from selection for Ghana. So, the last thing Mikel Arteta needed was another injury. Sadly, that’s what’s happened…

How Arsenal players are faring on international duty

Who can Arsenal not afford to lose? David Raya? Gabriel? Bukayo Saka? Well, the latter of that trio could now miss next weekend’s clash with Bournemouth.

Like Odegaard a few weeks before him, Saka hobbled from the Wembley pitch last Thursday night during England’s dismal 2-1 defeat to Greece.

It was a hamstring injury that left him in pain as manager Lee Carsley was forced into a substitution. The dazzling winger has now left the Three Lions camp and has returned to Arsenal for further tests. The extent of his injury at this moment is unknown.

So, what’s happened elsewhere? Well, Saka’s England colleague Declan Rice was rather thrown to the wolves against Greece.

Carsley’s incredibly attacking team selection meant that he and the two centre-backs, John Stones and Levi Colwill, were given no protection. The Arsenal star suffered as a result.

Continuing the theme of underperformers. William Saliba took criticism from the French media for his display in France’s 4-1 romp of Israel a few nights ago, largely for his role in the goal they conceded.

It hasn’t all been doom and gloom, however, with one of Arsenal’s star men delivering a superb performance of his country on Saturday evening.

David Raya's performance for Spain

Over the last year goalkeeper Raya has cemented himself as not only Arsenal’s number one but as one of the best stoppers in the Premier League.

He won the division’s Golden Glove award last term for the most clean sheets and it would not be a surprise if he walked away with it again next May.

His performances in 2024/25 to date have been nothing short of spectacular. There was that unbelievable save to deny Ollie Watkins from close range at Villa Park and then that quite frankly ludicrous double stop to keep out Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui in the Champions League, first saving his penalty before then getting back to prevent the follow-up from going in.

Such performances could not be ignored by his national team manager Luis De La Fuente who handed Raya the gloves for Spain’s 1-0 win over Denmark this weekend.

He excelled, of course, he did, keeping a clean sheet and drawing rave reviews from the Spanish press.

One publication labelled it an “outstanding” display, subsequently handing the 29-year-old a 9/10 match rating.

How did he impress? Well, Raya left the field at the end of the 90 minutes having won 100% of his duels and prevailing in 100% of his run-outs. He did only perform one, but it’s a healthy stat nonetheless.

Notable Spanish publication Marca were also complimentary of the Spaniard’s exploits on Saturday night, celebrating two ‘top-class’ saves from Kasper Dolberg to keep his nation in the match.

‘His game with his feet and his long runs are on another level’ hailed the newspaper; Arsenal fans certainly know all about that.

So, while other Arsenal stars flounder on international duty, Raya’s good form is certainly continuing.

As bad as Rice: Arsenal's 102-touch star dropped 5/10 international display

It was a night to forget for Arsenal’s international stars.

Brendon McCullum: 'We were being paralysed a little bit by fear' at the start of IPL 2021

“I am unapologetic and unrelenting in my belief that we need to play a braver style of play”

Seven matches. Just two wins in those. And Kolkata Knight Riders are seventh on the table of eight in IPL 2021 as the second leg of the tournament begins from September 19 in the UAE. The poor start, according to head coach Brendon McCullum, was because the players were “being paralysed a little bit by fear” at times in those early games, but he feels the two-time champions “can end it right”.”In regards to the tournament which is upcoming [the second part of IPL 2021], we can end it right,” McCullum told . “We can take the game on and we’re in a situation where we need things to go our way. We need to hit the ground running, challenge one another privately, support one another publicly and try and get the best out of one another in the next four-five weeks. Who knows where we can go with this.”The Knight Riders began their campaign with a ten-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, but then lost four games in a row before bouncing back with a dominant five-wicket win over Punjab Kings, before losing one more, to Delhi Capitals. That more-down-than-up run has been down to inconsistent performances. Dinesh Karthik (123 runs at 30.75, strike rate 138.20), Andre Russell (163, 27.16 and 155.23) and Rahul Tripathi (187, 26.71 and 135.50) have been good with the bat, but captain Eoin Morgan has been poor, with just 92 runs in seven innings, and a strike rate of 112.19, while Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill, regulars at the top of the order, haven’t been able to get a move on either. With the ball, Varun Chakravarthy and Pat Cummins – the Australian is unavailable for the remainder of the tournament – have been the star performers, but the rest of the bowlers haven’t been as tough to get away.”There were sometimes throughout the season when I just felt we were being paralysed a little bit by fear,” McCullum said. “I wasn’t able to free the guys up enough to understand that and that’s sort of a challenge for me. But it is also a good challenge for the guys as well that they need to push the envelope of their own thinking as well.Related

IPL 2021 Part 1: Samson's refused single, Jadeja's 37-run over, Brar's golden scalps

“Hopefully we will be able to strip away a bit of the angst which had built up in the first part of the season, just go out there and try and enjoy ourselves. That’s the ambition that I have got for the franchise and hence why I am unapologetic and unrelenting in my belief that we need to play a braver style of play.”McCullum, a Knight Riders player when the IPL kicked off in 2008 – remember innings – took charge as chief coach of the Kolkata franchise, as well as at Trinbago Knight Riders, in 2020. While Trinbago went on to win the CPL title in 2020 at the end of a remarkable unbeaten run [they topped the table and are in the semi-finals this season too], the IPL team didn’t have it as good, failing to qualify for the playoffs. This season has not been much better. As far as McCullum is concerned, though, his focus is on the bigger picture. “When we left India [in May], I think everyone understood me as a coach on how I want our team to play,” McCullum said. “I am unapologetic about that as well because my job is to try and build something at KKR that is going to last far longer than I am going to last for the franchise.”

Bangladesh bank on experience in must-win game against Oman

Having failed to finish Scotland off after reducing them to 53 for 6, the Group B favourites must bring their A game against the hosts

Big PictureBangladesh-Oman is looking increasingly like a knockout game in Group B, particularly after Scotland shocked Bangladesh on the opening day. Oman have already crushed Papua New Guinea, which means another win gives them a huge advantage in terms of net run rate. For Bangladesh, another defeat can only mean an early exit, the stuff of nightmares.Their supporters around the world are already enraged after they went down by six runs against Scotland. It wasn’t just the opposition or the margin of defeat, but how Bangladesh went down that stood out. Bangladesh are an established international side whose infrastructure and playing experience far outweigh those of the other teams in this group. But on Sunday, they failed to finish Scotland off after reducing them to 53 for 6. Scotland grabbed the big moments while Bangladesh, after that early dominance, seemed to play the waiting game.Related

'Our batting is a concern,' admits Mahmudullah after Bangladesh suffer Scotland slip-up

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, for instance, seemed to take too much time to rebuild the chase after the openers were dismissed. Mahmudullah could have looked to pull the trigger earlier too, and the lower order were left with too much to do in the end. It is also high time Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das went from “talented” to being consistent performers.Bangladesh’s bowling was impressive for the first 12 overs, but they conceded 85 runs in the last eight overs. They have a set pattern, with the spinners finishing by the 16th over, after which Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed go for runs at the death. When that happens, Bangladesh often have little chance of recovering.Oman, meanwhile, will look to build on their win against PNG. Aqib Ilyas and Jatinder Singh had a lot of fun putting together an unbroken 131-run opening stand in 13.4 overs. But they will be facing a much better bowling attack. The rest of Oman’s batting line-up must also be ready to contribute when asked to.Oman also have to do better on the field. There were plenty of fumbles in the deep against PNG, and the odd slip through the legs that went for four. Mohammad Nadeem made up for it with a brilliant catch at long-on, but against better oppositions, poor outfield work could cost Oman winning positions.Form guideBangladesh LLWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightMahmudullah said Mushfiqur Rahim’s dismissal was a “turning point” against Scotland, mainly because once he is set, he bosses the bowling. Mushfiqur looked to have turned a corner after a difficult start against Scotland, but gave it away with a loose scoop shot. Bangladesh will hope he doesn’t lose his cool against Oman.Zeeshan Maqsood’s three-wicket over handed Oman a massive advantage against PNG in the tournament-opener. The left-arm spinner led from the front with a four-wicket haul, bowling accurately and getting the odd ball to turn away from the right-hander. Bangladesh must do their homework to tackle Maqsood.Team newsMohammad Naim is going to be drafted in, and it is likely that Soumya Sarkar is going to make way. According to coach Russell Domingo, Soumya was picked ahead of Naim only because he gave them a sixth bowling option in case they had to deal with dew.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Mohammad Naim, 2 Liton Das, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Mahmudullah (capt), 6 Afif Hossain, 7 Nurul Hasan (wk), 8 Mahedi Hasan, 9 Mohammad Saifuddin, 10 Taskin Ahmed, 11 Mustafizur RahmanOman are unlikely to break their winning combination from the previous match.Oman (probable): 1 Aqib Ilyas, 2 Jatinder Singh, 3 Khawar Ali, 4 Zeeshan Maqsood (capt), 5 Kashyap Prajapati, 6 Naseem Khushi (wk), 7 Mohammad Nadeem, 8 Ayaan Khan, 9 Sandeep Goud, 10 Kaleemullah, 11 Bilal KhanStats and trivia Oman’s win over Papua New Guinea was only the third time a side won by 10 wickets in a T20 World Cup match. The previous instances were by Australia against Sri Lanka in 2007 and South Africa against Zimbabwe in 2012. Shakib Al Hasan’s strike rate of 71.42 against Scotland was Bangladesh’s second-worst in an innings at the T20 World Cup, with a minimum cut-off of 25 balls faced.Quotes”We have our work cut out tomorrow. Oman are playing well. They want to get into the next round. It will be tough for us, but the boys know that if we play our best cricket, we will have a good chance.”
“They looked weak in chasing. Their batsmen didn’t look in good form. We can say now that they are under pressure. But we have to play well in all three departments. Hopefully the result will come in our favour.”

Dyche must finally drop Everton ace with fewer touches than Pickford

Everton’s strong run of recent form in the Premier League continued as they battled hard to draw 1-1 with Fulham at Goodison Park on Saturday.

A second-half goal from former Toffees attacker Alex Iwobi looked to be the difference between the two sides before Beto scored a fantastic header in stoppage time to secure a point.

The result extended their unbeaten run to five games without a defeat in the top-flight for Sean Dyche’s side, who had also kept back-to-back clean sheets heading into the match.

Whilst Everton picked up a solid point in the end, there were a few poor performers on the pitch for the Toffees and Jack Harrison was one of them.

Jack Harrison's performance in numbers

The former Manchester City forward, who is on loan from Leeds United, struggled badly on the flank and did not do enough to justify his selection in the starting XI.

Dyche opted to select him on the right side of the attacking set-up and Harrison did not offer much in or out of possession throughout his 68 minutes on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Harrison was incredibly lightweight off the ball, losing 83% of his duels, and offered very little at the top end of the pitch.

Zero shots on target, one key pass, and zero ‘big chances’ created illustrate his lack of impact in the final third for the Toffees, in a game that they lost by just one goal.

Everton's loan forward Jack Harrison.

Harrison also only had 29 touches of the ball – fewer than his goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (48) – and this shows that the Englishman struggled to get involved in the match before he was substituted, way before Beto’s equaliser.

Why Jack Harrison must be dropped

Dyche must now finally ditch Harrison from the starting XI as the Leeds loanee continues to underperform and underwhelm on the pitch for Everton.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The left-footed dud has now started seven of his nine appearances in the Premier League this season and, yet, is still looking for his first goal involvement, with zero goals and assists.

His return of zero goals from 0.86 xG in nine outings highlights his lack of quality as a finisher as well as his lack of movement in the final third, as he has failed to generate many high-quality openings.

The winger has been slightly more unfortunate as a creator, with zero assists from two ‘big chances’ created, but has less than 1.0 Expected Assists – on 0.84.

Out of possession, Harrison has been a weak link for the Toffees. He has lost the majority of his duels on the ground and in the air, winning 46% of his ground battles and 40% of his aerial contests.

These statistics show that the 27-year-old lightweight is a liability for Everton in the final third, with his lack of impact on the ball, and out of possession with his weak play in duels, which is why Dyche must finally drop him from the team.
