Ornstein: Wolves make offer to sign £120k-p/w ace in "difficult" transfer

Wolves are looking to add reinforcements to their ranks in the final days of the transfer window, and have tabled an offer for a Premier League ace in recent days, it has been revealed.

Wolves on a tight budget

So far, business has not been pretty at Molineux ahead of the new Premier League season, and that was reflected in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the campaign for Gary O'Neil's side.

To date, the Old Gold have added three new faces and also made the loan of Tommy Doyle permanent, reaching a total outlay of £25m.

On the flip side, they have taken close to £100m from the sales of key duo Max Kilman and Pedro Neto to West Ham United and Chelsea respectively. And O'Neil sent a warning to those above him about just that when quizzed on potential additions in the final stages of the transfer window.

“No real update on names linked, it’s a ruthless league and we have an opportunity to be really clever and get some stuff done, the next 2 weeks is big for us…you take £100m last summer, you take £100m this summer, you can’t stand still,” he explained.

But he is set to be disappointed, with the reliable John Percy revealing that the "budget for remainder of the transfer window will be around £20m" despite their big sales, with Wolves "determined to safeguard their financial position".

As a result, the Old Gold will have to get creative with their transfer-making in the coming days, and they appear to have begun doing just that already.

Wolves discuss "difficult deal" for England international

That comes as David Ornstein reports that O'Neil's side are looking to pull off an ambitious move to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer.

The Arsenal no.2 seems set to leave in search of first-team football after starting just two Premier League games after the arrival of David Raya last summer, both of which Raya was ineligible for.

cody-gakpo-aaron-ramsdale-liverpool-opinion

With just two years left on his £120,000-a-week deal at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners are keen to sell the goalkeeper this summer while his value remains high, and have reportedly placed a £30m price tag on his head.

Of course, that £30m fee is more than Wolves' reported remaining budget, but Ornstein reports that they have made an offer which consists of an "initial loan + buy option", in a move that could see the Midlands side cover the majority of his wages for the season.

Wolves now readying bid to sign £30k-p/w Max Kilman replacement for O'Neil

He could be available for less than £20m this summer.

1 ByBen Browning Aug 19, 2024

Despite the offer, it is added that Wolves are aware that it is a "difficult" deal, but that talks continue as they try to find a breakthrough and potentially upgrade on Jose Sa this summer.

Whether Arsenal will face more enticing interest from clubs around England who are perhaps willing to pay a fee this summer is likely to determine the success of the move for Wolves.

Tom Haines 155 delivers for Sussex after Lancashire seamers set about their work

Ollie Robinson chips in with 59 as Sussex recover admirably from 127 for 6

It little mattered that the easterly wind down Talbot Road retained something of its winter cut this morning or that the sun over Salford Quays was as watery as a Methodist minister’s Christmas tipple. Large portions of the County Championship may have been barged into spring and autumn but the season was still beginning and most players know these are the games by which they will be judged. By late September careers will have a different shape. The anticipation was keen as the breeze and cricketers have known that feeling for a hundred and more years. “Some do sing as though the summer’s coming,” wrote the marvellous Nancy Kerr.So much was the same. That was clear in the particular enthusiasm the bobble-hatted gaggles of players devoted to their morning warm-ups. Among those groups were the Lancashire seamers, whose efforts dominated the first exchanges of our day’s cricket; also running like fury – as much to keep warm as anything? – was Tom Haines, whose career-best 155 was the innings by which this day will be remembered. Haines scored the first century of his career on a blissful midsummer’s afternoon at Arundel when the world was very different and the runs came with a freshman’s ease. This was a very different affair: the 22-year-old was dropped three times before he departed with a tired swish and edge to the keeper deep in the evening session. But Haines’ understanding that he needed to give the Lancashire seamers the morning before claiming the rest of the day for his own revealed a new-found maturity. To an extent he batted better here than he had at Arundel.Related

Fast start from Norwell leaves Derbyshire struggling to keep up

And yes, other things were different, too The absence of spectators was noticeable on this, above all days; crowds will not return until May 17 at the earliest and our game will not be anything like complete until they do. And even members of the media had to complete a questionnaire before being allowed entry to Old Trafford. Very necessary, of course, yet in doing so the hacks and broadcasters vouchsafed themselves in ruder health than they had known since spotty adolescence and some of the details required reminded one vaguely of a -obsessed French province. The desk at which we fill in these forms has been christened Checkpoint Chappie.Extreme vigilance was also needed from Sussex’s batsmen after Ben Brown had chosen to bat but only Haines was sufficiently watchful and even he was dropped twice by Steven Croft at second slip before getting to double figures. For it was a session that could have been plucked from the 1960s with the seamers in the ascendant and runs squeezed like straight answers from a government minister. The pattern was set in only for the fourth over when Aaron Thomason shouldered arms to Saqib Mahmood and lost his off stump. In fairness, Thomason is a makeshift opener and is deputising for Phil Salt, who has followed Jed Bartlet’s example and shown how easy it is to fall off a bike. This first session suggested that neither Salt’s recovery from injury nor Travis Head’s arrival from Australia can come too soon for Sussex.Lancashire’s seamers, on t’other hand, looked a formidable cadre, even without the resting James Anderson and the injured George Balderson. Tom Bailey had Stiaan van Zyl leg before for a duck and returned to have Ben Brown caught at slip by the previously porous Croft. (That’s somewhat hard on one of Lancashire’s finest fielders: he should have taken his first chance but the second was an athletic parry to a scrambling Rob Jones in the gully.) Bailey’s successes sandwiched Lancashire’s other wicket, which was rather presented to Luke Wood by Tom Clark when he hooked the seamer straight to Danny Lamb at long leg.Sussex were 40 for 4 when Brown was out and that was perhaps as pleasant as the day was going to be for Dane Vilas’s bowlers. Some portent of the afternoon and evening’s cricket was offered when Haines was struck a painful blow on the hand by Lamb in the over before lunch but responded by taking 12 runs off the next four deliveries, thus reaching his fifty off 94 balls. In the hour or so after lunch Delray Rawlins fell leg before wicket for 18 when playing no shot to Wood and George Garton was taken at slip by Croft off Lamb for 10 but the arrival of Ollie Robinson and the ageing of the ball changed the terms of the engagement. Not content with being in the minds of the England selectors for the Test matches against New Zealand in June, Sussex’s No. 8 probably sees himself as something of a bowling allrounder and he justified that description with an innings marked with shrewd aggression. In the morning we had thought that Tom Hartley’s presence in Lancashire’s side on this first day was purely decorative but the Lancashire spinner was summoned in mid-afternoon and was almost immediately lifted for a straight six by Robinson. Batting gradually appeared a tolerably straightforward undertaking, at no time more so than when Haines forced Tom Bailey through point to reach his hundred off 177 balls. During the evening session Robinson reached his own fifty and the pair had come within a run of doubling the score when he fell to the new ball when fencing at Mahmood. He and Haines’ 126-run stand set a new seventh-wicket record for Sussex against Lancashire but they will be happier with having changed the course of this encounter. Late wickets for the Lancashire seamers did nothing to mar that achievement. And in the morning we shall gather to see what sort of reply Lancashire can muster on a good pitch that repays vigilance. The photographers will dress like polar explorers and the players’ shadows may be even sharper in the floodlights than they were on this cold April evening. None of which will bother Haines as he enjoys the sleep of the just and nor should it trouble us overmuch. Our season has begun and it is not too fanciful in these troubled days to think it something of a fragile deliverance.

Rangers have struck gold on Ibrox gem who’s worth millions more than Cerny

Glasgow Rangers were meant to overhaul the playing squad in the summer window by selling various first-team players while adding in high-quality replacements.

Philippe Clement did manage to offload high earners such as Sam Lammers, John Lundstram, Connor Goldson and Borna Barisic, but the reality is, the incomings have been fairly underwhelming as a whole.

Phillipe Clement

Clement is certainly going for a youth-based transfer policy, as evidenced by the signings of Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Hamza Igamane and Oscar Cortes.

A few experienced arrivals joined, with Vaclav Cerny proving, in the first few weeks of the season anyway, that he could be an inspired signing for the Light Blues.

Vaclav Cerny’s statistics for Rangers

The winger joined on a season-long loan deal from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg and has impressed so far.

In just six games this term, the Czech dynamo has scored once while grabbing two assists in the process. He has started just three of those matches, however. Once the 26-year-old manages to establish regular appearances in the starting XI, his output will only increase.

The player was only signed by FC Twente last summer for £6m, hence why the Light Blues opted for a loan move rather than a permanent one, as Wolfsburg would likely have held out for a fee in this region.

Clement does have a player he signed in the squad who is worth more than Cerny, however, in the form of Mohamed Diomande.

Mohamed Diomande’s market value at Rangers

The Ivorian initially joined the Ibrox side in January on a six-month loan, before making the move to Scotland permanently in the summer for a fee of £4.6m.

A tally of two goals across 19 appearances during the second half of last term showcased his talents early on in his spell and hopes were high for the current season.

Mohamed Diomande

Diomande may not have scored this season in the Premiership, but the dynamic midfielder has already grabbed an assist, created two big chances, averaged one key pass per game and succeeded with 1.3 dribbles per game – a success rate of 57% – which shows how effective he has been going forwards in the league this term.

The 22-year-old is still learning and developing with every passing game, but the consensus is he will be sold for a substantial profit in the coming years if he manages to keep up these levels of performance.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, the young gem is currently worth €12m (£10m) and this value will continue to rise if he continues to shine in Scotland.

Cerny has proven his worth thus far at Rangers, but Diomande is still worth far beyond the £6m-rated Czech wide man, indicating that the Belgian manager struck gold on signing the Ivorian midfielder at the start of the year.

He won't be at the club long, that’s for sure, as his ceiling appears to be limitless. Diomande will be one of the club’s key players this season, no doubt about that.

Visitors begin reply brightly at Hove but lose six wickets and still trail by 135 as spinner snares four

Young off-spinner Jack Carson continued his impressive start to the season with four wickets as Sussex fought back strongly against Lancashire in the LV=Insurance County Championship Group 3 match at Hove. The 20-year-old from Northern Ireland finished the second day with 4 for 50 from 28 overs as Lancashire reached 193 for 6 in reply to Sussex’s 328, having been 137 for 1.Carson now has 15 wickets this season while 18-year-old debutant Jamie Atkins also had cause for celebration after removing Lancashire skipper Dane Vilas for a duck to claim his maiden first-class scalp.Related

Lancashire openers Alex Davies and Keaton Jennings had put on 93 with few alarms with Jennings passing 50 for the first time this season, but Carson broke through in his fifth over when a quicker ball deceived Davies, who chopped on trying to cut after nearly three hours at the crease.Jennings had been badly missed at slip by Stiaan van Zyl on 53 off the luckless George Garton but it wasn’t expensive. He added just seven more before edging Carson to slip off a delivery which turned just enough out of the rough. That left Lancashire 137 for 2, but they then lost four wickets for the addition of just seven runs. Stuart Meaker was rewarded for an excellent spell down the slope when Luke Wells, on his first return to the county where he spent ten seasons, followed one and was caught behind.Carson’s third victim was Steven Croft, who was athletically caught off bat and pad by wicketkeeper Ben Brown diving forward, and it was 151 for five when Vilas was bowled off an inside edge trying to force Atkins through the off side.Liam Livingstone’s first Championship innings of the season lasted just four balls as Aaron Thomason took a juggling catch at short leg to give the irrepressible Carson his fourth wicket and Lancashire had lost 5 for 24 runs in 8.5 overs. Josh Bohannon and Danny Lamb negotiated 23 overs to stumps but their side still trail by 135.Carson’s haul followed his 5 for 85 in Yorkshire’s second innings at Hove last week, the visitors winning that match by 48 runs.Earlier on Friday, Sussex added just 10 runs to their overnight 318 for 7 before they were bowled out with Lamb taking the last three wickets including Carson, bowled via an inside edge, and the bizarre run out of Henry Crocombe, caught short when George Garton struck the ball straight back down the pitch and Lamb stuck out a hand on his follow through, deflecting the ball onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Garton was last man out, caught at fine leg as Lamb finished with 3 for 59.Tom Bailey took 3 for 69 before Lancashire’s reply was held up by rain just under half an hour before the scheduled lunch break, causing a 40-minute delay.

The Telegraph share major Sean Dyche sack update from Everton chiefs

A major update on the future of Everton boss Sean Dyche has been forthcoming amid pressure to sack the Toffees boss after their poor start to the Premier League season.

Everton endure tough summer

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, it was not the summer that many hoped for at Goodison Park. Parting ways with midfielder Amadou Onana for £50m, Everton replaced him with Tim Iroegbunam, while they also added Jesper Lindstrom on loan to bolster their attack, alongside marquee addition Iliman Ndiaye, who arrived from Marseille in a deal worth £15m.

Jake O’Brien’s arrival added further depth to the Everton backline, while in one massive positive the club were able to keep hold of young talent Jarrad Branthwaite, who enjoyed an excellent breakthrough campaign at Goodison Park last time out. Deadline day bought two more new faces in the shape of ex-Forest midfielder Orel Mangala, who arrived on loan from Lyon, as well as Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

However, the latter is sidelined until mid-October with a pre-existing injury, leaving a hole in Everton’s attack that Ndiaye, Beto, Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Youssef Chermiti are yet to fill properly this season.

It’s left them rooted to the bottom of the table, having conceded 13 goals in four games and without a point to their name. The trip to Aston Villa brought a familiar woe too, as the Blues surrended a 2-0 lead for the second consecutive game courtesy of a wonder goal from Jhon Duran.

The latest on Sean Dyche's tenure

Despite the poor start to the season, the Telegraph report that Dyche is under no pressure from the Everton hierarchy, who still have full belief that he will turn things around on Merseyside.

According to their report, there is no prospect of the former Burnley boss being given his marching orders any time soon, with the club “determined to stand by Sean Dyche for at least the rest of the season”, despite the “prospect of the situation deteriorating before it improves”.

Sean Dyche has some issues to contend with…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 14, 2024

They add that “Dyche has enough credit in the bank with the Everton hierarchy to buy him considerable time”, with both majority owner Farhad Moshiri and Director of Football Kevin Thelwell aligned in their desire to keep him at the club.

Speaking ahead of the loss against Aston Villa, Dyche revealed he wasn’t thinking about his own future at present.

“The bigger picture of the club is the main focus. The club is still nowhere near where it wants to be. We want to win games – that’s my first thought. It’s not about myself or contracts. It’s about my staff and the players aligning to win games.”

It remains to be seen whether the decision to keep or sack the Englishman will be taken out of the hierarchy’s hands should Everton’s poor early season form continue and/or a takeover go through, but as it stands it appears that Dyche will be taking to the helm for the forseeable future.
