Firebird Hamish Bennett ready for his New Zealand rebirth

The 32-year old fast bowler has a more rounded bowling arsenal and that will be vital as he goes up against India’s batting might

Hamish Bennett had made his Test debut along with Kane Williamson in 2010. He bolted into New Zealand’s World Cup squad the next year and later, in 2014, he gave Virat Kohli a proper workout in tied ODI with his searing pace.Bennett nailed the hard lengths and stopped Kohli from pulling or driving in a sequence of back-to-back maidens. Then, he had the batsman nicking off with a 143kph rocket that took off after landing on the pitch. Kohli v Bennett: 1 off 16 balls at a strike rate of 6.25.Fast-forward to 2020: Williamson and Kohli are now international veterans and world beaters. Bennett, meanwhile, is preparing to make his T20I debut in the series opener against India at Eden Park – the scene of his incredible burst against Kohli. This Kohli is a white-ball monster. These India players are, as Ross Taylor put it, rock stars. Former batting coach Craig McMillian calls them the real deal. New Zealand, though, are missing several of their first-choice seamers, including Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult and Matt Henry. In their injury-enforced absence, they have turned back to Bennett, who is a also a changed cricketer. He’s no longer a one-trick pony, who just bounces out batsmen. He has overcome multiple injuries and has transformed himself into a well-rounded white-ball bowler, and is currently the holder of both the 50-over Ford Trophy and the 20-over Super Smash titles.ALSO READ: Southee backs New Zealand to bounce back from Australia set backIn the final against Auckland Aces earlier this week, where the Wellington Firebirds were defending 168, he began his spell in the Powerplay with a brace of lifters, having Martin Guptill ducking and weaving. Then, when Bennett missed his lengths and went too full, Guptill planted his front leg and cracked him for a brace of fours.Having conceded 11 runs in his opening over, he came back strongly in his second, the fifth of the innings, and had Colin Munro nicking behind with a back-of-a-length delivery that seamed away. Guptill, though, settled down and rebuilt the innings with Craig Cachopa, pushing the Aces to 82 for 3 in the 12th over.Bennett hit hard lengths once again and mixed it up with his offcutters to hike the required rate close to 12. One such offcutter, reared off the pitch and took the splice of Guptill’s bat before streaking away towards cover prompting the batsman to just see off the bowler’s third over.Hamish Bennett exults after getting rid of Virat Kohli•Associated Press

With wickets falling around him, Guptill aimed to take the chase deep, but with the Aces needing 52 off 18 balls, he had to go for broke. And he happened to run into Bennett again. When Bennett bowled length and outside off, Guptill lined him up and smoked him over midwicket for six. Bennett went much fuller the next ball and Guptill helicoptered it, MS Dhoni-style, with his strong wrists. The ball seemed destined to sail over the midwicket boundary, until Logan van Beek pulled off a stunning relay catch. The wicket was down to van Beek’s brilliance at the edge of the boundary and some luck, but the pressure created by Bennett earlier had also played a part. The Aces’ gun batsman was gone for 60 off 53 balls. Game over for them. All told, Bennett has been among the most consistent T20 bowlers in New Zealand over the past couple of seasons. He has 26 wickets in 20 games at an economy rate of 8.06. Kyle Jamieson (30 wickets), Mitchell McClenaghan (27), his Firebirds team-mate Ollie Newton (27), Ajaz Patel (27) and Blair Tickner (27), have picked up more wickets than him but they have come at greater cost. In this season alone, Bennett has bagged 17 wickets in 11 games at an economy rate of 7.20 and emerged as the leading wicket-taker.He has also been in fine form in the Ford Trophy and has developed a reputation of being a bowling leader at Wellington, after a decade-long stint at Canterbury. The switch up north has switched his fortunes as well, and in the absence of Boult and co. Bennett is likely to shoulder the bowling load for New Zealand along with Southee.”He has done extremely well in white-ball cricket for Wellington – not only the T20s but the one-day stuff as well,” Southee said of Bennett on Wednesday. “He has earned his recall and it has been a while and he knows his game now. He’s a little bit older and I’m sure he’s excited about the challenge and he probably is bowling as well as he has ever in his career. Pleased for him, [I’ve] played a bit of cricket [with him] when I was younger. So, nice to see him still trucking in and getting another opportunity.”The environment is pretty good, the guys can come in and someone like Hamish, he feels comfortable when he comes in. And he’s able to be himself, which I think helps going forward in the field. You’re relaxed and if you feel welcome, then I guess it makes the transition easier out onto the field with your mates.”Bennett doesn’t want to put too much pressure on himself and instead just wants to enjoy his cricket, a shift in mindset that gave him a second wind after moving to Wellington.”I’d never given up on playing for New Zealand. I don’t think anyone does,” Bennett told the New Zealand Cricket website. “You just have to keep plugging away. For me, I just enjoy playing cricket. I don’t live and die by New Zealand selections, but I’m still trying to be the best cricketer I can be.”Now, at 32, Bennett will have another crack at Kohli at Eden Park again, and a chance to find a second wind in his chequered international career.

Report: Aston Villa considering hijacking Premier League player this summer

Aston Villa are among a host of Premier League clubs who are interested in signing a "really important" player from a top flight rival in the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa top four hopes & transfer news

Unai Emery's side are still basking in the glory of Sunday's superb 2-0 victory away to Arsenal in the Premier League, as they did their top four chances no harm whatsoever. It was arguably their most impressive result of the season, along with the victory at home to Manchester City, in what has been a memorable campaign.

Emery deserves so much praise for the job he is doing – winning at his former club may have felt particularly sweet for him over the weekend – and the hope now is that they can hold off Tottenham and secure definite Champions League football ahead of next season.

Qualifying for Europe's biggest club competition would not only be a huge financial boost, but it would also allow Villa to target top-quality players in the summer transfer window, with Vitoria de Guimaraes winger Jota Silva linked with a move to the club, being compared to former hero Jack Grealish.

Meanwhile, Villans owners NSWE have reportedly made steps to sign Inter Milan and Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries, with the Dutchman wanting more than £80,000 if he makes a move to Villa Park.

Aston Villa want "important" Premier League player

According to a report from HITC, Aston Villa are keen on hijacking West Ham defender Ben Johnson this summer, but they are far from being alone when it comes to the race to sign him.

It is claimed that the defender "could leave West Ham for nothing this summer with Aston Villa, Everton, Wolves and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur all running the rule over the out-of-contract defender".

Meanwhile, it is also believed that "clubs in Italy, France and Germany have talked to Johnson’s representatives too".

West Ham's Ben Johnson

While Johnson may not be the world-renowned signing that Villa fans will no doubt crave this summer, particularly if Champions League football is secured, he could still be a shrewd addition considering he will be available for free.

The £20,000-a-week West Ham man is capable of doing a reliable job at both centre-back and right-back, and he has made 13 Premier League appearances this season, also enjoying three outings in the Europa League. David Moyes has been full of praise for him in the past: "He’s a really important player for us. In the squad and the group he’s really important.

"Quite often we’ve brought him on and used him in different roles and he’s had a chance to have some games under his belt, he’s not let us down and scored a good goal in midweek."

The fact that Hammers insiders are desperate to keep hold of Johnson says a lot about his worth, and while not a stellar, match-winning option, as mentioned, he could give Villa much-needed depth in a couple of defensive areas.

Aston Villa plotting to repeat Tielemans masterclass with "prolific" target

Aston Villa’s hopes of reaching their first European final in over 40 years took a major hit on Thursday evening, succumbing to Olympiacos 4-2 at Villa Park.

The first leg of their Europa Conference League clash against the Greek giants was supposed to end in a victory for the home team, taking an advantage back to Greece, yet it didn’t quite go as planned.

Of course, a place in the final is not out of reach, but they will need to vastly improve next week in order to fight back from a 4-2 deficit.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Unai Emery’s side are still in charge of their own destiny, in both Europe and the Premier League, but big performances will be needed over the coming weeks to end the season on a high.

The Spaniard will have one eye on the upcoming summer transfer window. If Villa do secure qualification for the Champions League, then he will need to make a few more signings to help bolster his squad.

Aston Villa transfer news

According to Football Insider, Villa reportedly want to sign Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho in the summer.

The centre-forward has rejected an offer of a contract extension at the Foxes which would see him extend his stay, but it now appears as though this will be his final season with the club.

Emery will have some money to spend in the window, but adding a few players on free transfers will help him utilise his budget far better in the hopes of signing genuinely top-class players who can take the Midlands side to the next level.

The Spaniard signed Youri Tielemans from the Foxes last summer on a free transfer and luring the Nigerian international to the club could allow Emery to repeat that blinder, no doubt about it.

Youri Tielemans’ stats for Aston Villa this season

The Belgian midfielder had shone during his time at Leicester, making nearly 200 appearances for the club since joining in 2018 from AS Monaco.

During that time, he scored 28 goals along with chipping in with 26 assists, and the Foxes faithful will forever remember his wonderful striker during the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea to see the club win the trophy for the first time.

It appeared as though Villa had secured one of the bargains of the summer when it was announced he had joined the club, giving Emery the chance to work with a sublime midfielder who was heading into his peak years.

Despite the initial excitement, the 26-year-old had to wait until November to make his first Premier League start for the club, undergoing a rocky introduction to life at Villa Park.

Since the turn of the year, however, he has started 12 league matches while playing key roles in their European ties against Ajax and Lille, which has seen them reach the semi-finals of the Conference League.

Tielemans currently ranks seventh among the Villa squad for big chances created (four) in the Premier League, along with ranking sixth for goals and assists (seven), seventh for tackles (1.3) per game and 16th for possession lost per game (6.6), showcasing his talent across a range of metrics for the club this term.

Youri Tielemans

Although he endured a tough start, it is beginning to look like the midfielder is enjoying his football again as he emerges as a key player under Emery.

Signing Iheanacho could be a solid addition to the first-team squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

How Kelechi Iheanacho could fit it in at Villa

The main area in which Emery needs to strengthen is with regard to his attacking options. Yes, Ollie Watkins has enjoyed a sensational season, scoring 27 goals, and registering 12 assists, but if he suffers an injury, Villa don’t have much in the way of backup.

Jhon Duran has failed to hit the ground running during the current campaign, netting only six times in all competitions.

Leicester City strikerKelechi Iheanacho.

Iheanacho has plenty of Premier League experience first and foremost, which will be a big bonus for Emery. In stints with Leicester and Man City, the 27-year-old has played close to 200 games in the English top flight, scoring 42 goals along with racking up a further 26 assists, a decent enough strike rate in terms of a reliable backup option.

The striker hasn’t quite enjoyed the finest of seasons with the Foxes, however, finding the back of the net just six times, although he has played only three Championship matches since the turn of the year.

Despite averaging just 42 minutes per game and starting ten league games throughout 2023/24, the centre-forward has still managed to score five times, creating three big chances while succeeding with 58% of his dribble attempts – 0.6 per game – suggesting that he has still shown glimpses of his talents when given the opportunity to do so.

The 6 foot 1 striker has been dubbed “prolific” by talent scout Jacek Kulig in the past and certainly has the pedigree to step up whenever Watkins needs a rest, or dare we say it, suffers an injury.

He may not be the big-name signing that is expected this summer, but Emery will have to be realistic as to who he goes and spends money on, especially if the club wish to comply with financial fair play regulations.

This means a few bargains will have to be found and Iheanacho definitely fits the bill in that regard.

Not only does he have a host of experience in the top flight, but he can even drop slightly deeper if required, depending on how Emery will set up next season.

Adding another centre-forward or two will be a priority this summer for the manager in order to ease the burden on Watkins. The Englishman is a fantastic player, but he can’t do everything on his own, thus indicating the need for a couple of others to chip in when he isn’t at the races.

On a free transfer, Iheanacho sounds like a superb investment – as Tielemans has proven to be.

Maiden ODI call-up for George Linde as South Africa travel to India

Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen return to bolster the batting for three-match series

Firdose Moonda02-Mar-2020

George Linde will hope to make his ODI debut in India•BackpagePix

George Linde, the left-arm spinner who made his Test debut in India last October, is in line for his first ODI appearance in the same country after being named in South Africa’s 15-man squad for a three-match series from March 12. Linde replaced Tabraiz Shamsi, who will not make the trip as he awaits the birth of his first child. South Africa have two other spin options in Keshav Maharaj and allrounder Jon-Jon Smuts and have recalled rested players Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen to the playing group.SA ODI squad

Quinton de Kock (capt, wk), Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Kyle Verreynne, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Jon-Jon Smuts, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla, Beuran Hendricks, Anrich Nortje, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj

The pair are sitting out the ongoing ODI series against Australia, along with Dwaine Pretorius, who will not travel to India. Instead, Andile Phehlukwayo will operate as the first-choice pace-bowling allrounder. South Africa have four other seamers in their squad: Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla, Beuran Hendricks and Anrich Nortje, with Kagiso Rabada unavailable because of a groin strain. That means South Africa will make the trip with an inexperienced attack, but they have countered that by including their most experienced batsman. Du Plessis returns to the ODI squad for the first time since the 2019 World Cup, and since the captaincy was handed over to Quinton de Kock, though he has played under de Kock in T20Is since. South Africa also appear to have settled on Temba Bavuma as de Kock’s opening partner, with Janneman Malan, who is currently in the position, left out. Malan made his debut alongside de Kock on Saturday night in Paarl but made a first-ball duck and left the field with cramp. He remains available for the next two matches against Australia. There is still no room in the squad for Zubayr Hamza, who is the leading run-scorer in the domestic one-day cup, or Reeza Hendricks, who made his return to domestic cricket with a century for the Lions on Sunday. However, with the next World Cup three years away, there is expected to be an opportunity for them in the future.”It is exciting to see the amount of competition for spots that we have within the team and in the franchises, it’s a good headache for us as selectors to have,” Linda Zondi, CSA’s independent selector, said. “We are satisfied with our picks for what will certainly be a challenging tour of India. We saw some promising performances last year from the T20 squad that travelled there and we wanted to give a player like George Linde another crack at the conditions which seemed to really suit him. We are also particularly pleased with the balance of youth and experience that we have achieved while our young leadership group continues to establish itself. We are looking forward to some good performances in this relatively short tour.”The India tour is South Africa’s final series of the 2019-20 summer, which has been a tough one for the new coaching regime under Mark Boucher. South Africa have yet to win a series having lost the Test and T20I rubbers against England, and squared the ODI series and lost the T20I series to Australia. They are currently 1-0 up against Australia in the ODI series. The team have a lengthy winter break and will return to action in May for a white-ball series against Sri Lanka before a two-Test and five-T20I tour of the Caribbean while there is also the option of a three-match T20I series in Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Reply received as Tottenham make offer for "special" £47,000-per-week ace

Tottenham have received a reply after tabling an offer for a "special" player, as chairman Daniel Levy and the Spurs recruitment team make early summer moves.

Postecoglou looking to upgrade in key positions at Spurs

Reliable media outlets have claimed that the north Londoners are ready to back manager Ange Postecoglou again this summer, despite their disappointing end to the Premier League campaign.

Tottenham now ready to sell £110,000-per-week star for just £13 million

The Lilywhites could take a slight loss.

ByEmilio Galantini May 8, 2024

On Wednesday, journalist Tom Allnutt wrote a report for The Times, sharing that Spurs are set to try and provide Postecoglou with three major signings in a new striker, centre-back and midfielder when the transfer window reopens.

The Lilywhites are prepared to hand their manager the necessary funds to upgrade his squad, coming after Postecoglou recently stated that serious change is needed at Tottenham. The Australian is also on record stating that Spurs will indeed look to bring in another central defender.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, said Postecoglou on signing another centre-back.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here. I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen."

Tottenham have displayed interest in Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as one target, with the Englishman set to leave on a free deal this summer. Another bargain option could be Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, who is in the same position as Kelly, and has been pivotal for Fulham since returning to the first team.

Tottenham make Tosin offer with reply received

According to reliable Spurs news source Paul O'Keefe, Tottenham have actually now made Tosin an offer to join them on a Bosman deal.

However, it is bad news, with the £47,000-per-week Englishman refusing their approach. It remains to be seen if they come back in for him, but the evidence suggests he could be worth a second punt.

“He is a key player for us. He is one of the leaders in our dressing room and we need these guys to step in in the right moments and he did it,” said Marco Silva on Tosin's excellent 23/24 form.

“We missed him a lot, we missed him because he didn’t play the first three months of the season. Tosin is a special player for us, I can’t hide that situation. The way he can defend the box but also on the ball he is a special player for me, the way I want to play, the way he can build (from the back).

“For three months we missed him but he has just played the last four or five games and he is getting better and better. A great performance from him against Everton and to be able to take the last decision to be deciding the game he deserves all the credit.”
