Everton player suffers “unlucky” injury in new blow for Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche has been handed yet another blow in his bid to keep Everton in the Premier League this season, it has been reported.

Everton struggling to find form

Everton are fighting for their Premier League lives once again, but don't have it entirely in their own hands. Having been found guilty of a Financial Fair Play breach earlier in the season, the Toffees were docked six points. They could yet be docked more points should they be found guilty of a second breach, with the decision set to be made by 8th April at the latest.

As it stands, they sit four points clear of the drop zone, and another deduction could see them slip towards the bottom three and Nottingham Forest, who themselves have been docked four points.

Though Dyche's Everton have created plenty of chances, they have a serious inability to find the back of the net with any regularity, and Abdoulaye Doucoure remains their top goalscorer with six, despite not having scored since December.

The Toffees could have an advantage in race for his signature.

ByBen Browning Mar 28, 2024

According to expected goals, Everton should have scored 19 more than they have managed. The second-biggest underperformance in the Premier League is Brentford, who have found the net eight fewer times than their efforts deserve.

In fact, Everton's is the biggest underperformance in Europe's top five leagues, with Ligue 1 side Nice second to the Toffees with an underperformance of 13.76.

On top of that, Dyche is seeing his squad hit by injuries.

Lewis Dobbin latest absentee

Now, it has emerged that young winger Lewis Dobbin is set to miss at least part of the campaign's remaining games after picking up an injury over the international break.

The youngster scored his first Premier League goal earlier in the season and has made 11 substitute appearances for the Toffees this term. He was part of the warm-weather training camp in Portugal, but has since picked up an injury.

As per the Liverpool Echo, the injury came about in a 'freak accident' in training, which resulted in Dobbin suffering damaged ligaments, though it was not bad enough to require surgery, as had been initially feared.

Dyche explained ahead of the clash with Bournemouth that there was no obvious return date for Dobbin just yet.

“It is better news than we thought. He hurt his ankle and was very unlucky – he fell over, landed on someone’s foot and it tilted his ankle. We thought it might need an operation, it doesn’t, which is good news, so now it is just the timescales of getting him back.”

Dobbin now joins Arnaut Danjuma on the sidelines in what will come as a blow to any hopes Dyche harboured of freshening up his misfiring attack over the international break.

Somerville's SCG journey – tears in the car park to Test cricket

The tall offspinner has a strong chance of playing in the third Test, at the ground where it all began for him

Will Somerville has recalled being in tears in the SCG car park when he was awarded a New South Wales contract in 2014 as he prepares for the chance of making a Test appearance on the ground six years later.Williamson, Nicholls unwell

Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls sat out New Zealand’s training on New Year’s Day after reporting flu-like symptoms but it is not thought that they will be in doubt for the Sydney Test.
Both players came to the ground in the morning before it was decided they would return to the team hotel to rest.
“They’re fine, just not feeling really good today,” Shane Jurgensen said. “They had some flu symptoms and I’m sure they’ll be back training tomorrow. They’re pretty tough so just take a rest today. It’s been a big last two Tests and a good opportunity for them to have a day off and they’ll be here tomorrow.”

Somerville, the tall offspinner with three Test caps, who was a chartered accountant before a crack at professional cricket the age of 30, was a late addition to the New Zealand squad following the injury to Trent Boult. He admitted he had long had his eye on the fixture list following his return across the Tasman – lured by the prospect of more first-class cricket with Auckland – after a five-year stint with New South Wales.”It was a dream to get there [a cricket career] at 30 and I’ll never forget when Nathan Lyon had his second daughter that was my third Shield game which upgraded me to a full-time contract in 2014. I was just in tears in the car park, realising I was going to be a cricketer.”I did look at the schedule 12 months ago after I made my Test debut and I was pretty excited at the prospect. I was hoping to go on the tour and two days ago I got the call when I was playing T20 cricket for Auckland. I’m pinching myself that I’m here in front of the Members [Stand] talking to you guys.”It’s pretty special to be back where my kids were born. My mother and father in law live down the road in Coogee and the kids are staying there for the week. Very special, for sure.”He has helped bowl New Zealand to two victories (in Abu Dhabi and Colombo) in his three Tests, and in five first-class matches at the SCG took 23 wickets at 20.69. He is now a strong chance of coming into the New Zealand side for the final Test as they aim to try and avoid a whitewash, either as the lone spinner in place of the struggling Mitchell Santner, or as part of a twin-spin attack with Santner or legspinner Todd Astle, on a surface that is expected to turn.”I’ll see how things unfold in 48 hours, assessing the wicket and what the balance is going to look like. I’m hopeful for sure,” he said. “I’ll just draw on the group around me, the Black Caps and their experience more than anything. I’ve played here before so it’s familiar surroundings, [but] it’s Test cricket, a different kettle of fish and it’s going to be tough.”His nickname in the squad is ‘Dad’ on account of being one of the older members and his jovial spirit will be a boost to a team that has been heavily beaten twice in a series where it was hoped they would compete strongly.”He’s a great guy to have in the camp, he’s so positive,” Shane Jurgensen, the New Zealand bowling coach, said. “I’ll never forget when he got his first cap in Abu Dhabi to see the look on his face and the emotion. He just brings so much to the team, experience and he’s very calm and a lovely person, and a pretty good bowler.”During his time at New South Wales, Somerville bowled extensively with Steve O’Keefe and tried to learn all he could from Lyon when he wasn’t on international duty.”I spent a lot of time training as I didn’t play that many games in four years,” he said. “I bowled a lot with Steve, Beau Casson was our bowling coach and I always chatted to Nathan when he was around and tried to feed off the GOAT of offspin bowling. He’s got a very pure action and it’s nice to watch. I learned from those guys. I also spent a bit of time with Greg Matthews who gives a different perspective on things. A few really good words stick in my mind.”However, despite his time in Australian first-class cricket – and a 2016-17 season where he was New South Wales’ leading wicket-taker – there was only ever one team he wanted to play for internationally. “I always wanted to play for New Zealand, in the back of my mind growing up in Wellington, and I’ve always been an All Blacks fan.”

Spurs eyeing dream Bissouma partner with 192 PL appearances to his name

The Tottenham Hotspur faithful have witnessed plenty of quality midfielders play for the beloved club in recent years, with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Moussa Dembele springing to mind.

That’s also the case this season, with Pape Matar Sarr, James Maddison, and Yves Bissouma all impressing under the influence of Ange Postecoglou.

James Maddison with Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League.

However, despite having an extremely well-balanced midfield that provides attacking threat and defensive security, the latter could be improved, as highlighted by the fact that Spurs have only kept six clean sheets all season.

With that in mind, there is one potential summer signing who could help improve that statistic while also making the Lilywhites a much harder side to compete against.

Tottenham’s search for a new midfielder

According to a recent report from Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are interested in signing Wilfred Ndidi this summer.

The defensive midfielder currently plays for Leicester City, but his contract is set to expire in the summer, meaning he could be acquired on a free transfers.

Due to the news that the Nigerian is likely to leave the club regardless of whether the Foxes are promoted or not, many Premier League clubs are now on alert.

Ndidi has the potential to become a bargain for any side that picks him up having played in 192 top-flight matches for the Foxes, but Spurs may already have the perfect role lined up for him alongside Bissouma.

Spurs set sights on "explosive" signing who could be Kulusevski 2.0

The Lilywhites are reportedly interested in a possible deal to sign the forward this summer.

ByDan Emery Apr 9, 2024 Ndidi could unleash Bissouma in a new role

Bissouma has been a key member of the Spurs midfield this campaign, starting 22 times in the Premier League.

The number eight has often been fielded as the defensive-minded midfielder in the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1, playing alongside Sarr, who’s given the freedom to roam.

Yves Bissouma.

The Mali international is an incredibly important player for the Australian boss, sitting slightly deeper to control the game and regain possession for the team, as shown by his 92% pass accuracy and three tackles per game.

However, Bissouma has shown glimpses of having much more to offer than the role he’s playing right now, and the signing of Ndidi could see his shackled attributes unleashed.

As you can see by the table above showcasing his average statistics from the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, it’s easy to understand why Ndidi is known for being a defensive “machine,” as per analyst Raj Chohan.

The midfielder is extremely strong in the duel, covers ground extremely well, and sniffs out danger with ease, and between him and Bissouma, the Spurs midfield would be extremely difficult to bypass.

However, from an in-possession perspective, the added security of the 27-year-old could potentially enable Bissouma to express himself on the ball much more frequently, especially in the final third.

Last weekend’s game against Nottingham Forest highlighted Bissouma’s urge to impact the game in the attacking phases, unleashing four shots in the first half from range.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Furthermore, during the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star was allowed to show his creativity and technical quality, as displayed via his two big chances created and 1.2 key passes per game.

Overall, the potential signing of Ndidi on a free would be a great pickup for any club, even if he didn’t slot into the best XI, but he could certainly have a great impact in the Spurs midfield, enabling Bissouma to be unleashed further forward.

Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls doubtful, New Zealand call up Glenn Phillips as illness strikes

Tom Latham is expected to captain the side should Williamson be forced to sit out

Andrew McGlashan02-Jan-2020Glenn Phillips has been summoned as last-minute batting cover after illness hit the New Zealand camp ahead of the final Test in Sydney, forcing Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls to sit out training for the second day running.Mitchell Santner, whose position in the side was under scrutiny after two poor outings, has also come down with the bug, leaving the possibility that New Zealand’s resources will be stretched very thin as they aim to avoid a whitewash. Jeet Raval, who was dropped after the Perth Test, is currently the one spare batsman in the squad and the decision has been taken to fly in the uncapped Phillips on the eve of the game.Phillips averages 42.54 from 23 first-class matches – with four hundreds – and struck a century for New Zealand A against England late last year.”We’ve obviously got a few balls up in the air at the moment and we want to be on the safe side and have options,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “Glenn has been in terrific form this season and has good versatility with where he can bat and the roles he can play.”He’s been around the T20 team for the past couple of years so should feel comfortable in the environment. We’re still hopeful Henry and Kane will pull through and we will give them every chance to prove their fitness. If one or both are ruled out then we will consider our options and most importantly how they balance the side for this final Test.”ALSO READ: Preview – New Zealand seek pick-me-up in hazy SydneyShould Williamson be unavailable – and it would take a very severe illness to sideline him – Tom Latham would be the likely replacement as captain, although last year, when Williamson was ruled out of the Christchurch Test against Bangladesh that was subsequently cancelled following the terror attack , Tim Southee was in line to lead the side.Latham took on the official duties at a reception with the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday and also did the pre-match press conference.Kane Williamson walks off after his dismissal•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

“[Kane] is obviously a great leader amongst this group and he’s passionate about this group, so I’m sure if there’s any chance of him playing, even if it is a small chance, he’ll certainly be playing,” Latham said. “It’s gone around the team a little bit which obviously isn’t ideal but fingers crossed, they’re resting up today and hopefully they’ll wake up and be good to go.”If we lost those guys it would be disappointing but we’ve got a squad of 15 who are passionate about this team, and whatever side we do play has the backing of the whole group that it’s the right team for the job.England’s preparations for the first Test against South Africa last week were severely impacted by illness which swept through the majority of the squad in the first few weeks of the tour and continued to strike players while the Test was in progress.ALSO READ: Somerville’s SCG journey – tears in the car park to Test cricketIt leaves New Zealand’s planning up in the air although if everyone is available for selection there is the potential for two changes to the bowling attack with Matt Henry replacing the injured Trent Boult and Will Somerville coming in for Santner. While the surface is expected to turn, it is thought unlikely they will field two spinners, particularly after the workloads Southee and Neil Wagner have had during the first two Tests. The series has been a chastening experience for New Zealand after they arrived with the hope of competing with Australia having risen to No. 2 in the Test rankings. They failed to cross 200 in the first three innings before Tom Blundell’s defiant century in Melbourne, in his first Test as an opener, provided belated resistance.”We haven’t played our best brand of cricket and I know the guys are excited about getting out there over the next five days and trying to put a good performance on the board,” Latham said. “Yes, the series is lost but it’s the Test Championship and points are up for grabs. We’ll be doing our best to put a good performance out there.”Tim Paine was expecting Williamson to be standing with him for the toss and was focused on Australia not letting up in their intensity after a dominant Test season which has seen them win all four matches, including two against Pakistan, so far by huge margins. In the Ashes series last year, Australia produced a poor performance at The Oval after they had retained the urn with a match to spare but Paine was confident his team had learned from the experience.”I wouldn’t say we took our foot off the pedal [at The Oval], but we’ve certainly learned how to handle that experience of having the emotional high of the win then switching back on really quickly,” he said. “We spoke this morning about making sure that we turn up tomorrow with the same energy and focus that we turned up at the Gabba. All I’ve asked tomorrow is we turn up expecting New Zealand to come out hard and expecting it to be another fight for five days. We feel if we can match them in that area that eventually we’ll be able to wear them down.”GMT 0800 The story was updated to include the news of Phillips’ call-up.

Man City now chasing £34m "monster" who they think can replace Walker

Manchester City star Phil Foden added another goal to his growing collection of impressive strikes in the 3-3 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Cityzens academy graduate has now racked up 22 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances for the club in all competitions this season, and is further cementing himself as one of the best players to have come through the youth ranks.

Manchester City star Phil Foden

Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer, who both came through the same academy, are now at Premier League rivals Chelsea, whilst one of the most valuable former City youth stars is now being eyed up for a return to The Etihad.

Man City's interest in Bundesliga star

According to TEAMtalk, City are now chasing a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for Pep Guardiola as a replacement for Kyle Walker this summer.

He spent nine years in the City academy, between 2010 and 2019, before being sold to Scottish giants Celtic in 2019, who then moved him on to Leverkusen in January 2021.

Transfermarkt values him at €50m (£42.7m) and that makes him the fourth-most valuable active former City academy star, behind Michael Olise, Palmer, and Foden.

Manchester United transfer target Jeremie Frimpong in action for Bayer Leverkusen.

TEAMtalk now state that City have identified him as a target this year as they have been on the search for a replacement for veteran defender Walker, and seemingly believe that Frimpong is good enough to be the long-term successor in that role.

However, the report states that his £34m price tag has attracted interest from other clubs, as Real Madrid and Liverpool are also looking at the Dutch international.

This means that it may well take a fight from City to secure his signature ahead of two of their European and domestic rivals, who are also eyeing new right-backs this summer.

Why Manchester City should re-sign Jeremie Frimpong

Frimpong, described as a "monster" in the final third by The United Stand's Beth Tucker, has been in terrific form for Leverkusen as a wing-back this season and could provide an extra attacking threat to Guardiola's side.

The 23-year-old starlet has produced 12 goals and 11 assists in 36 appearances for the German side in all competitions so far this term, which includes eight goals and eight assists in 26 league matches.

Walker, meanwhile, has only racked up six goals and 21 assists in 292 games across his entire City career, which speaks to how impressive Frimpong's form has been in Germany.

As you can see in the table above, Frimpong has the edge over the England international when it comes to making an impact at the top end of the pitch.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur speedster has won a higher percentage of his defensive duels and won the ball back twice more per game on average, which suggests that the Leverkusen man still has plenty to improve on out of possession.

That is an area of his game that could be developed under Guardiola over the years to come, as he still has plenty of time left to progress at the age of just 23.
