Kop legend Gerrard excited by new Liverpool striker signing

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has praised the signing of Burnley striker Danny Ings, according to reports from the Daily Star.

Ings will join the Merseyside club when his contract with the Clarets expire on July 1 after agreeing to terms earlier this month, however the transfer still awaits the agreement of a fee that will be set by a tribunal.

And Reds idol Steven Gerrard, who has joined LA Galaxy, is looking forward to watching the striker play for his former club, but has warned fans that they have to be patient with the 22-year-old.

Gerrard said: “The Ings one I’m really excited about because he can be what he wants to be – I know the talent’s there, he’s very young, he’s fresh.

“I think if he carries on learning and developing he can become a top striker and we love top strikers, so it’s there for them, the stage is there and I wish [him] the best of luck and I’m looking forward to watching [him] play.

“He might be the type of player that needs that bigger club, and does thrive on the pressure.

“He’s certainly got the platform there at one of the best clubs in the world to showcase his talents.

“For me, the supporters just need to be patient with him, he’s still very young and I’m sure he’ll get eased in gently. But, as I say, I’m really looking forward to watching him play.

“Hopefully he can get some goals early on which will give him the confidence that’ll make him feel like he belongs there.”

Ings was Burnley’s stand-out performer in their Premier League season, scoring 11 goals but was unable to stop his side from being relegated into the Championship.

Tottenham Hotspur were also heavily linked with a move for the Englishman, but Liverpool acted quickly to finalize the switch.

Kop manager Brendan Rodgers will hope that Ings eases the pressure on his misfiring strikers, who have struggled to score on a consistent basis all season.

This Man United signing will bring back the good old days

It is often said that when Man Utd are playing at their best, they are moving the ball back to front quickly, constantly in the attack and pouncing on mistakes. The best United teams have the ability to counter attack at lightening speed, score goals at will and get the ball to their attacking wingers who cross and create chances for their team mates as well as score goals themselves.

Certainly for too long last season United were often slow, laborious and frankly boring. The Red Devils weren’t playing anything like the team of old. The transition to Louis van Gaal’s style wasn’t ever going to be quick, but it felt like it would never happen.

However, as the season went on the improvement was evident in their style of play and the Red Devils were looking more like their old selves again.

But still something was missing and that was top wingers who can put the fear into the opposition with their pace, power and attacking threat. Now with the signing of Memphis Depay surely they will come good next season – it looks as though United have an attacking winger in place to allow them to get on the front foot again and back to their formidable best.

Depay will be the signing to do just that, the Netherlands international has all the qualities needed to succeed at the top level. He is just 21-years-old, already has 17 caps for the Dutch national team and has scored an impressive 39 goals in 80 games for PSV Eindhoven, including a league high of 22 goals last season. All very impressive for a man who is played out on the wing.

He may not achieve those type of figures in the Premier League in his first season, but ten goals is a total Depay will be capable of getting for the North West giants from out wide. Ten goals may not seem like a great deal, but it will make a real difference if your midfielders can contribute, too.

He is also a fantastic free-kick specialist, has lightening speed across the turf and along with his incredibly quick feet combined with his immense skill it is clear that Depay will be a handful for any defence.

The former PSV man has an abundance of quality and is the sort of player that United need in their team – he will add a dynamism to the United attack that was missing last season.

Van Gaal’s attack was a bit one-paced at times, and they struggled in the final third in a number of matches. Home defeats at the hands of Swansea and Southampton come to mind, but with Depay in the team there is little chance of a dimensional attack. He will be the difference in such matches, and he will make a huge difference to Van Gaal’s team and push the team towards that next level.

The next level will be challenging for the league and winning trophies, something the Dutchman will help the Red Devils achieve. He will contribute along with the other United signings to get back to their best and give them the injection of quality in the final third to create chances, score goals, win games and win trophies.

In Focus: Everton don’t need another attacking midfielder in David Brooks

According to reports in The Mirror, Everton are one of three Premier League clubs chasing a January deal for £20m-rated Sheffield United attacking midfielder David Brooks.

What’s the word, then?

Soccer Football – Championship – Leeds United vs Sheffield United – Elland Road, Leeds, Britain – October 27, 2017 Sheffield United’s David Brooks celebrates after scoring their second goal Action Images/Craig Brough

Well, The Mirror says that Blades boss Chris Wilder is bracing himself for top flight bids for the 20-year-old, with the Toffees, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all said to be keen on the Welshman.

While the United manager doesn’t want to sell the twice-capped Wales international, The Mirror says that it may be up to the board rather than him if the club get an offer they can’t refuse, and if that was the case he would likely leave even though he only recently signed a new four-year contract.

How has Brooks done this season?

He has been very impressive for the Championship high-flyers.

The 20-year-old has scored two goals and provided a further four assists in 21 appearances in all competitions, although he has missed their last two league games through illness.

According to WhoScored.com, the attacking midfielder has made 19 key passes in 19 Championship outings this term, while he has successfully completed 24 of the 56 dribbles he has attempted.

The same website also lists Brooks’ strengths as his through balls and his set-piece taking ability.

Would he be a good signing for Everton?

It’s difficult to say.

While he is clearly a player with plenty of potential and quality, the fact that he usually plays in a central attacking midfield role suggests that the Toffees don’t really need him.

They already have Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaassen that can play in the No 10 role, while Ross Barkley may still be with the club in the second-half of the campaign.

Everton will be looking to compete for the best young attacking talent in the Football League – as they did when they signed Ademola Lookman during the previous January transfer window – but he probably isn’t what they need right now.

Manchester United fans mock Manchester City’s empty seats at Etihad

Manchester City’s campaign for glory continued on Tuesday night when they edged closer to a place in the final of the Carabao Cup.

There is no doubt that the team have been in scintillating form throughout the season and a cut above the rest in terms of quality.

Recently, though, luck has also been on Pep Guardiola’s side, and that was evident in their semi-final first-leg clash against Bristol City.

Fresh from beating Manchester United in the quarter-finals, the Robins headed into the contest at the Etihad Stadium with plenty of confidence.

The Championship outfit struck first when Bobby Reid netted from the penalty spot.

Early in the second half, Kevin De Bruyne found an equaliser for City, but the killer blow for Bristol City was when Sergio Aguero scored the winner in the 92nd minute to claim a 2-1 advantage.

For City’s local rivals United, the result would not have caused much joy, but they did take delight in the fact that there were plenty of empty seats at the Etihad.

Rangers fans are desperate to sign Greg Docherty this January

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers had a £300,000 bid for Hamilton midfielder Greg Docherty rejected earlier this week, with the paper reporting that the Ibrox side would have to double that offer to land their man.

With the likes of Jamie Murphy, Jason Cummings and Russell Martin arriving in Glasgow this month, it appears Graeme Murty is interested in building a team bursting with Scottish talent and a move for Docherty would certainly continue that.

Docherty is one of the brightest young prospects in the Scottish Premiership, having had a fine first half of the season for the South Lanarkshire team.

He’s scored three and assists six in 21 top flight appearances for his club, producing dynamic performances in the centre of midfield that have caught the eye of opposition supporters up and down the country.

West Ham United co-owner Sullivan hopeful of more signings, fans react

West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan and his partner David Gold are not the most loved figures at the London Stadium.

Fans regularly criticise the businessman over their running of the club, in particular transfer strategy.

Manager David Moyes is overseeing his first window since taking over from Slaven Bilic as permanent manager in November.

So far, the East London outfit have recruited one new player in the form of Joao Mario, who has signed on loan for the rest of the season from Inter Milan.

The fans are keen for the Hammers to continue spending in this window, and Sullivan has been quick to deny reports that there are no more funds available.

In a statement released by the club’s official website, the businessman said:

“I have been made aware of reports suggesting that there will be no more players joining the Club this month due to funding not being available. Nothing could be further from the truth. The manager David Moyes has the Board’s full backing in this window and, together, we continue to work night and day to bring in players to add quality and depth to the squad, despite January being a difficult time to do business.”

As expected, supporters have been reacting to Sullivan’s claims by posting their thoughts on Twitter.

Meanwhile, West Ham have bid farewell to Diafra Sakho, who has joined Rennes in an £8m deal.

Tottenham Hotspur fans wax lyrical about Dembele’s performance against Juventus

Tottenham Hotspur performed a dramatic comeback against Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked down and out after conceding two goals in the opening 10 minutes in Turin.

Gonzalo Higuain stunned the travelling side by netting in the second minute before converting from the penalty spot seven minutes later.

Tottenham were outplayed in the early stages of the clash, but they managed to turn it around.

Harry Kane notched his 33rd goal of the season in all competitions shortly after the half-hour mark.

Juventus struggled to maintain their form in the second half as Christian Eriksen managed to equalise to give Tottenham a 2-2 draw.

The team now have two away goals to their name when they take on the Italian giants at Wembley in the return leg of the last-16 tie.

As expected, the fans were delighted with the comeback, and a special mention went to Mousa Dembele, who controlled the midfield.

The Belgian has been inconsistent at times during the season due to his injury woes, but on Tuesday night he was at his best.

Southampton fans pay tribute to cup hero Alex McCarthy after win

Southampton will play Wigan or Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after earning their spot in the next round against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side had to work hard for their 2-1 victory at the Hawthorns but goals from Wesley Hoedt and Dusan Tadic were enough to secure the win, despite the Baggies scoring a volleyed beauty through Salomon Rondon.

Though the goals were obviously important, supporters paid tribute to goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after the win for his impressive performance between the sticks, believing he was the reason that Saints are into the next round.

The 28-year-old has only recently become a regular in Pellegrino’s first team after Fraser Forster was benched in December and supporters believe he is definitely the better choice.

Supporters are now keen to see him continue as Saints’ number one in the closing stages of the season, taking to Twitter to enthuse about his Saturday performance…

West Ham fans discuss whether Robert Snodgrass deserves a second chance

According to reports in the Evening Standard, West Ham United winger Robert Snodgrass, rated at £6.3m according to Transfermarkt, is ready to give his all for the club when he returns from a season-long loan spell with Aston Villa in the summer, and Irons fans have been quick to discuss his future.

The 30-year-old joined the Championship outfit on a temporary basis in August following a disappointing spell with the east London outfit, having only moved to the capital from Hull City in January 2017.

The Scotland international struggled to make an impression under previous Hammers boss Slaven Bilic, picking up just two assists and failing to score in 15 Premier League appearances, but he has netted seven times and provided a further eight assists in 26 games for Villa this term.

West Ham supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on a potential first-team return for Snodgrass next season, and while one said “this man deserves a second chance”, another said “he’d fail”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Man United fans loved the impact of Jesse Lingard on Sunday

Manchester United boosted their chances of finishing in the English Premier League top four on Sunday after an excellent comeback win against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

After falling behind in the match thanks to Willian’s opener, Jose Mourinho’s side had to dig deep to secure the three points and did just that, first equalising through Romelu Lukaku, who then crossed for Jesse Lingard to head home the winner in the second half.

Lingard, who was tasked with coming off the bench and making an impact, was excellent during his time on the pitch, proving again to supporters and to Mourinho that he is one of the club’s most important players.

He’s got a knack for scoring huge, important goals and that makes him a very valuable asset indeed, even if he needs to work on his consistency.

Fans were all in agreement that his impact was excellent, with some now saying he has earned his spot in Mourinho’s starting line-up once again.
